I think the "Premium Kettle" also has that, but not as pricy as the Master Touch.

Heart says propane, budget says charcoal.

Gas Grill It's a bit over the top of your budget, but the difference between this and what you get in the $250-300 range is significant.

Charcoal Grill This hits the sweet spot in your budget, and is one of the most versatile grills on the planet. (Definitely the best bang for your buck without building one yourself)

This has an ash cleanout system built in so it makes cleanup easier. And in regards to the instant on thing you can get similar results to the startup time of a gas grill using a charcoal chimney. To use the chimney simply add coals to the top of it, place some paper, or a fire starter cube, or both under the cylinder, light and wait 10-12 minutes, then dump the coals into the grill and spread with metal tongs/spatula/stick/etc.

I use phone book pages. They're free, and I have the internet.

The items I can think of right now that I've bought pretty much because of this subreddit:

  1. Zojirushi Travel mug - I use this as my office coffee mug. I fill it up in the morning and if I get sidetracked then it's still hot hours later.

  2. Saddleback Pocket ID Wallet - simple and gets the job done

  3. Weber One-Touch Gold Charcoal Grill - I love this grill.

  4. Red Wing Iron Ranger 8111 (amber color) - the first 3 weeks I thought I made a huge mistake but now they are the most comfortable shoes I've ever owned.

  5. Fisher Space Pen - I've had to stop other people from pocketing it. My wife tried to take it because she likes the way it writes.

  6. [Kershaw Skyline Knife] (http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B001CZBDF8) - I'm not into putting a lot of money into a pocketknife so this fits the bill nicely.

  7. ToiletTree Heavy Duty Nose and Facial Hair Trimmer - my previous nose trimmers felt like it was ripping the hair out by the root. This one I don't feel anything and it's very well made

All of these I would buy again.

You might get a better response over at r/grilling.

But since you're here, I'd point out that it's going to be hard to find a new, gas grill for under $150 that's worth a damn. I recommend getting a used, 10 year old, Weber Genesis Silver or Gold with 3 burners (some only have two), or if you can find one some of them come with a side burner and an extra table (the side burner is nothing great, but the extra table is handy).

These can be found in decent shape on Craigslist for around $100 in most areas. The grill shells will last forever and the internal parts are readily available and not terribly expensive. The stainless grates are durable and ridiculously easy to clean. There are plenty of sites and blogs about refurbishing these grills, just google it.

If Grandma is set on buying something new, then I'd go with the 22-inch Weber Kettle Premium charcoal grill. This thing is iconic for a reason. They're very well made, they're built to last, you can buy replacement parts and upgrades to cook just about whatever you want.

Yes it does, you just have to get the premium ($150) model that also comes with the large, removable ash catcher. This is the exact model that I own.

I would definitely recommend looking into the Weber Kettle like /u/jammaslide suggested. If, however, you know your dad would want the rectangular shapes used in both options you provided, these are both solid grills, both for solid prices. I would actually go with the Dyna-Glo myself, just because of the extra cooking surface.

  • This, this, this, this, and this to get started.

Obviously, get whatever kind of grill you want. I love my gas grill and use it often, but if I could only have one grill, it would no question be charcoal. With that said, anything with the name Weber on it will be tough to beat at it's price point.

Came here to say amazingribs.com. It really changed they way I think about cooking in general.

I've used a few different gas grills, a Brinkmann smoker and Weber Kettles. In my experience, the Brinkmann was a complete waste of money and hassle to use. It was difficult to get to the pan to add more charcoal, not a lot of room for food and didn't hold temp well at all. I'm a firm believer in the Weber Kettle as I've learned to cook everything on it. From reverse searing a steak to 15 hour boston butt smokes.

A few highlights:

  1. Learn what the snake method is. In a Weber Kettle, I line the edge of the grill with two rows of Kingsford briquettes and then put one row on top of those existing two rows (to form a pyramid). I put 6 ashed over white coals at the end of one end of the "snake" and I can get 6 solid hours of constant 225° heat. You'll need to learn how your exact smoker or grill cooks, so take notes if needed.

  2. Get a good thermometer. The thermapen comes highly recommended and it has improved my cooking immeasurably. You may want to get a thermometer that has a wired probe so you can monitor the meat temperature without having to constantly open the lid and check.

  3. Learn what temperature to cook each cut of meat to. There is some conflicting information out there, but I've never been led wrong by amazingribs.com. 203° for boston butt is what you want. Lower than 190-195 and it's going to be tough.

  4. Soaking the wood that you are going to use to smoke meat does no good. "Why do you think they build boats out of wood?" Meathead (I swear I'm not affiliated with the site)

  5. You can get good results smoking meat on a gas grill. Some purists will tell you that you can't but they're wrong. You just need to add a tray with wood in it. I still prefer charcoal + wood, but I've gotten by for years when I lived in places that charcoal grills were not permitted and turned out some good meat.

I don't know if I answered any questions you had or helped whatsoever, but those are tidbits that I picked up along the way that I wish I knew about early on. Good luck!
