Look into those "Weird XYZ" books. I've read the NJ and MD books and they have some local myths, legends, and UFO stuff that is worth reading.
There's a series of "Weird insert city/state here" books. They cover a wide range of things from unsolved murders, to weird paranormal stuff. Might be a nice place to start that's not TOO dark and graphic. Here's a sample:
