If it’s anything like the whole house fan my parents had, you’d just need to replace that controller with a smart switch. You’d lose the ability to adjust the speed though.

u/DundasKev · 9 pointsr/googlehome

Can't speak to best. But as a broke home automation enthusiast, I can attest that getting SWITCHES instead of lights is way cheaper, especially in the long run.

Bulb burned out? No problem. Stick dollar store bulbs in em. I got 6 lights on my main floor which work on 2 switches.

Currently using WeMo switches. Sometimes they go on sale for under $30.

Do you live in a house or an apartment? If a house, I'd suggest a few WEMO light switches.

I have found non-smart but programmable items (like your roomba) tend to be much more affordable and much easier to install and use.

You can get sensors for lights (bathroom humidity, movement, etc) that are pretty cheap/easy to install (even timers aren't too bad).

Look into more programmable items than wifi/connected if you want to save money. A Nest is a great start, and you can connect lights/garage/etc to it, but it goes way beyond that. Set it and forget it are great!

Various links below for ideas, but not necessarily these products. I've bought some from Amazon/Lowes/etc and have had mixed success. I'd check product reviews.

For Hallways and stuff

Bathroom fan/light

Wifi/Remote Lighting

Locks for Front door

For Blinds/etc
-- I've not used this, but my friends have something similar and its pretty neat

Good luck, let me know if you do any of these, and have any success with them.

There are endless different kinds, all depends on what you want. If it's just a single pole switch and you're only doing one switch and that'll be that then I'd get a Wemo switch. It uses WiFi for communication, you can control it with your phone, voice, IFTTT, etc.

The Wemo Switch can be wired to directly control the relay/contactor which should be more than enough.

You would just need to grab an enclosure and whatever plugs/outlets and a few bits of spare wire.

There are cheaper WiFi switches but I personally like the Wemo switches, you can set rules (like Auto-Off) or schedules and it works with IFTT for more advance stuff.

It's also worth mentioning that going the smart switch route is less confusing for anyone else in the home.

I've been slowly converting all my lights, and ended up with these paddle switches.

The paddle does not have off or on positions, you simply press the bottom of the switch to toggle the lights. This has proven to be less confusing to my parents and other guests.

u/jtonzi · 2 pointsr/amazonecho

Hooray!

So, with a 3 gang box, you can put in anything. Wemo make a light switch and also a dimmer switch. Leviton has a few switches as well.

Keep in mind that you'll need a neutral line available for all of these switches. If you have the kind of switch where there's only a single wire and the switch sits in the middle to cut off power flow, you'll have a problem swapping in a smart switch.

u/saunjay1 · 2 pointsr/smarthome

My opinion, start with a hub/ecosystem (SmartThings, Vera, Insteon, Homeseer, OpenHab, etc) first. Then get a light switch that works with your selected ecosystem.

However, if you don't want to go the hub route, grab a WeMo Light Switch and use IFTTT to automate it.

This one (Belkin WEMO) is WiFi and works with Alexa.

This one (GE Z-Wave) is Z-Wave and works with Alexa.

u/hunterstee · 2 pointsr/homeautomation

They're usually wireless. Well controlled wirelessly at least, but wired into the power and load for your lights.

Switches that use the Z-wave wireless protocol are probably the most common. They all require a Z-wave hub of some sort to control them. These are all basic on/off switches, but there are dimmable versions as well that require dimmable but not necessarily smart bulbs:

https://www.amazon.com/LINEAR-GoControl-WS15Z-1-Zwave-Switch/dp/B00E1OQN8Y

There's also some that connect via standard wifi and can be used via an app without a hub, although without a hub or hub software like Home Assistant you are still limited in how you can automate them:

u/romcombo · 2 pointsr/galaxynote4

There are several companies (Phillips,Belkin, etc.) that sell light bulbs or light switches that can be controlled via iPhone/Android apps.

Ex:

http://www.amazon.com/Philips-431643-Personal-Wireless-Frustration/dp/B00BSN8DN4

On the app side, I recommend taking the time to try out Google Music or another music app in favor of the stock Touchwiz app. Also, remember that smaller Widget sizes are available and to try live wallpapers if thats your thing (they do eat battery life though).

u/Heliumx · 2 pointsr/homeautomation

for that many lights, have you considered maybe using a smart switch?

As far as motion activation goes you can use a WeMo motion sensor bought used or from eBay. I say that cause their discontinued, but it's an idea.

u/dale3h · 2 pointsr/homeautomation

That is a very broad question. Could you be more specific about which devices you would like to automate, and which features you would like along with it?

Popular Devices to Automate:

  • Lights
  • Thermostat
  • Door Locks
  • Garage Door
  • Irrigation System
  • AV Equipment

    Popular Automation Features:

  • Presence Detection
  • Motion-Activated Lighting
  • Spoken Alerts
  • Push Notifications
  • Remote Accessibility
  • Media Center Controlled Lighting

If you say "everything," then be prepared to shell out $10,000+. If you want to automate just lights, you're probably looking at a couple hundred dollars per room.

Also, please be aware that there are at least two ways to automate lighting: smart bulbs and smart switches

I think the cheapest and most user-friendly route would be to use Belkin WeMo Light Switches. The Echo has native support for this device, and they do not require anything more than your existing WiFi. If it were me, I would not go this route due to the constant problems that some users experience with WeMo.

Of course, you could get by way cheaper by using 433MHz RF switches/outlets, an RF transmitter, and a Hue emulator, but those lack security, and this requires getting your hands dirty with coding and configurations.

In the end, there is not really a "perfect" solution.
u/arizona-lad · 2 pointsr/HomeImprovement

How about several smart switches? For most of them you need a neutral available, but they work as you want:

Next time you want to turn the light switches off from bed, give one of these a try.

https://www.amazon.com/WeMo-Switch-Enabled-Control-Lights/dp/B00DGEGJ02

u/ThePancakeChair · 2 pointsr/AskElectronics

Possible? Most certainly!

Want to buy a solution? Here's an outlet, and Here's a lightswitch. Those are just examples I found in under a minute by searching "iot outlet" and "iot light switch"

Want to create your own, more cost-effective solution? Raspberry Pi, Beaglebone, Arduino, and many other "pre-baked" boards offer convenient IoT-enabled hardware and software to control devices from apps that are in the market or that you can create. These can be a bit pricey, though, compared to doing it yourself (which would of course take a good amount of time to develop the first time through). If you want to create something from the ground up, you'd want to make a thread for that express purpose and go from there. You'll need to decide on your communication method and how to create your hardware, software, app, etc. Certainly possible, as many people have done it before, but the first thing to decide is which two factors of the "design triangle" you want to aim for (can't get all three): Free, Perfect, or Now.

I have this setup for my ceiling fan. It works with Google Home really well. It's pretty easy to configure. Note: It cannot be used with a 3-way switch. (Two switches control the same fan.)

u/Yelrammit · 1 pointr/DIY

How about something like this Belking WeMo Light Switch? If I understand it correctly, you can access this through your home wifi network if you have access to an apple device. I'm sure there are similar devices for Android, but I stopped after finding this.

edit: I should have read further, it apparently supports Android too.

u/jakfrist · 1 pointr/homeautomation

Is using a wifi light switch that can be controlled from your phone not what you are looking for?

If that works, I am a fan of WeMo. I have tried a couple others and they seem to be a bit glitchy, but I’ve never had any issues with WeMo.

Try not to post Amazon links through your Amazon account. The reddit filters don't seem to like it.

Alexa cannot recognize different users, nor can it recognize permission differences between different Echo devices. Anyone who is capable of giving commands to an Echo on your account (meaning, anyone in your home with an un-muted Echo) is assumed to have full permissions for anything attached to that account.

As for wall switches, I use this.

u/cleansweep9 · 1 pointr/homeautomation

Yes, it's very possible. Wemo, Zwave, Zigbee, and Insteon (and probably others) can all do this.

You will need a hub to remotely control all but the Wemo.

u/OlemmeAnonyymi · 1 pointr/lifx

It's $100 for the kit, including two switches. Additional switches are $40, not cheap, but the price is similar to other offerings and they work well.

The early release of the Pop wasn't always reliable, but in subsequent updates it's become rock solid. Far more reliable than the Lifx bulbs themselves. I don't recall the last time one of my Pops failed to work.

Why don't you try one of these:
https://www.amazon.com/WeMo-Light-Switch-enabled-Amazon/dp/B00DGEGJ02/

Looks to me like it would suit you better.

u/[deleted] · 1 pointr/hydro

I doubt that anything like that exists, at best what you might find, or even make, is a medium circuit that will allow you to control the ballast.

For example, something like this switch connected to your ballast:

http://www.amazon.com/WeMo-Control-Anywhere-Automation-Smartphones/dp/B00DGEGJ02

or this one:

http://www.belkin.com/us/p/P-F7C027/

Basically what you might use is something that can control the electricity between the outlet and the ballast, instead of a wifi ballast. It is also practical because you can use it for other things if you want.

u/Pyro919 · 1 pointr/DIY

You'd still also need to by the wink hub to get it to work with your smartphone.

Belkin's WeMo line has a few options that work via WiFi:

u/choorel · 1 pointr/HomeImprovement

I recently replaced our front porch light switch with a Wemo. It's been good so far. You can set schedules based on time or sunset, and you can do it manually of course. Best part is that it works from anywhere so even when I'm out of town I can still turn the lights on and off at will.

u/kevin_at_work · 1 pointr/homeautomation

Maybe this? Most of the typical home automation switches will require a hub ($100+) but this one doesn't. Downside is that if the switch is off, triggering this won't work. But you could always turn the switch on before bed and turn the light off with the app.

This guy is a little more expensive but solves the problem of being able to control it seamlessly through the physical switch and the app.

In either case, getting it to sync with your alarm might require a bit of dev, or you could just set the timer in the associated app if your schedule doesn't vary much.
