Check out What Got You Here Won't Get You There. (Not an affiliate link) It's been some time since I read it, but roughly the advice in it was:

  1. Take a survey of your co-workers/people you interact with to determine what your biggest flaws are. You've already settled on one, perhaps based on feedback from others, but consider the possibility that it might not be the actual biggest thing that annoys people.
  2. Own it. Tell the people you've done this to that you're aware that you do it, that you know it's a problem, that you're sorry, that you intend to fix it, and (perhaps most important) that you need their help to track your progress.
  3. Take steps to fix it. This can take multiple forms. You could simply tell the people from step 2 that every time they catch you doing this and let you know (right then), you'll give them five dollars (or whatever amount will make it hurt). You could do something else. You can get ideas from the people in step 2 about how to fix it. But whatever you do:
  4. Follow up with the people from step 2 every week, or every other week, to track how much you've improved.

Do this until the problem is solved, or until it's clear the strategy you've chosen in step 3 isn't working. If you agree with the people from step 2 that it isn't working, brainstorm a new plan with them and try again.

The book goes into much more detail, and is really informative. I highly recommend it.

I'm dealing with similar issues myself. I got this book from my leadership coach at work and I think it's very good: What Got You Here Won't Get You There
