The great American composer Aaron Copland's book, What to Listen for in Music is a wonderful, and easy to read guide that enhances listening to classical music. That said, I have to get another copy; I loaned mine out years ago and didn't get it back.

I think the best way to start to understand classical music is to first find something you like to listen to, plenty of suggestions listed already on this thread. Once something inspires you, I recommend reading about composers and music and why, when, and just general aspects of that music. A huge part of classical music is to know what to listen for.
