I remember reading this in an old trivia book, Why Clocks Run Clockwise, I think.

I had read in this book that the reason paper cuts and other small wounds bug us so much is that because they are so small our brains go "that is too small to hurt me yet it does" and we end up subconsciously thinking about them more often or something like that.
