if you're curious whether running is paleo, this video will answer your question. as we learn in books like this, people have been doing this for a couple million years.

usually when paleo-types knock endurance sports, they're referring to marathons or ironman comps. personally i suspect much of the problems people who compete in events like these have are from how they train and not just the volume of training; there's a difference in running 26.2 miles, and running 26.2 miles at 85% VO2 max, which places much more stress on the body. also running is more stressful if, well, you haven't spent your while life running.

as for training on a high fat diet, this series of posts is an excellent start: http://thatpaleoguy.com/2010/09/15/high-fat-diets-for-cyclists-part-one-of-six/

Dean K has elevated the profile of ultra running as a sport but he is a little disingenuous when he talks about his accomplishments. He is a very good self promoter, I'll give him that. Plus he's been able to make a living as an above average runner which is to be commended.

I haven't read 50 50 but I would recommend Why we run (formerly Racing the Antelope). I think the mix of natural science and ultra running would appeal to reddit users.
