The Wii is definitely a good system. On top of all the old games you can buy a snes style controller for it and install the homebrew channel so you can do more with it. I personally sold my old video game collection and emulate almost everything on the Wii.

Lowest price (incl. shipping): $23.39

Not super cheap, but controllers rarely are, unfortunately.

>most games will have left thumbstick or WASD to move. The Wii does not have this

that's a lie though

Most people probably won't agree (or didn't even know it was possible), but Wii Classic Controller/Classic Controller Pro with the Mayflash converter is another option. If you get the Classic Controller Pro with Mayflash, it actually comes out a little cheaper than the 360 controller.

That being said, there are some conversion issues which require some other programs to work with. Still, it's a nice controller.

Typically no. Especially for larger tournies, wireless controllers pose as a logistical issue. You may be able to get away with one at a local with below 50 attendees, but once you go larger than that, you'll have a hard time finding TOs that'll allow them.

IMO, you're better off with a GameCube Controller:

White GC Controller

Black GC Controller

GC Adapter

(Note: There's no difference between the colors, just take your pick)

Course, if for some reason you still want wireless:

Classic Pro Controller

Classic Controller

Wii U Pro Controller

The Wii logo. You want this you DO NOT want this OR THIS

There is even a couple sold at walmart that look like official NES classic controllers, SAY they work with the classic but DO NOT. Best thing you can do, buy official or read the reviews/comments

They're just referring to these:

Classic Controller

Classic Controller Pro

They're just controllers made for the Wii's Virtual Console, but they plugged into the Wii remote itself to make it wireless.

You know how the Nunchucks plug into the Wii Remotes? Well there's also Classic controllers and Gamecube controllers that also plug into the Wii Remotes.

Here's a couple of examples. The Gamecube one is a third party controller but for Mario Kart and Smash it feels great, and it's also compatible with any games that use the Wii U Pro controller.

The Nintendo-made Classic Controller was originally for the Wii, but it still works on the Wii U for most games.

Smash Brothers purists are going to crap all over this advice because they only accept the Official Nintendo GameCube Controller & Adapter as a viable device, but you guys aren't playing tournaments, it's just some kids and family coming over to play Nintendo.

These controllers are much easier for a new player to understand than the Nunchuck/Wii Remote combo, and they are relatively cheap. Certainly much cheaper than the official Nintendo GameCube controllers and adapter, and cheaper (although not as perfect) as the Wii U Pro controller.

Fortunately they used the same plugs as the [Wii Classic controller] (https://www.amazon.com/Wii-Classic-Controller-nintendo/dp/B000IN0BSU/ref=pd_sim_63_4?ie=UTF8&dpID=41SKjuShldL&dpSrc=sims&preST=_AC_UL320_SR268%2C320_&psc=1&refRID=ZXT8DZ4F1ZSZFRVGJR4X) or Wii Classic controller Pro so you can use that instead of gouging your hands.

Careful, those are probably knock-off, and might be bad quality. For the best experience, I'd stick with Nintendo (though used should be fine too, as long as it's first party).

Hey I was just thinking of getting that. Would you recommend this controller or would the regular nunchuck and controller combo work just fine?

u/BananasInOnesies · 1 pointr/zelda

You can't use the Wiimote for N64 games, unfortunately, you'd need a "Classic Controller" as seen here.

I'm not 100% if it's the same on Wii U, but I'd assume so, as the older games can't use the newer controllers. I'd say it's probably like trying to put a 3DS game in a DS. xD If you see my point!

Edit: The Wii U supports the Classic Controller - so you'll be best using one of those!

Also Know that Owning a Wii U means you have access to those Wii games as well and the Wii U comes with an HDMI Cable so it's much more useful then a Wii since most new TVs don't have a Composite out or even a Component out.

Also Know that to play any of these games on either Wii or Wii U (which ever one you get) you're gonna need a Wiimote + one of these:

The PDP Fight Pad

The Classic Controller

or The Classic Controller Pro

Amazon? Or try checking local stores. Where you live is probably not where I live so I can't be specific, but they're still around and not that terribly hard to find.

And yeah, the controller situation is a bit frustrating. If the Pro controller could simulate a Classic Controller we'd be in a much better place, but alas, it doesn't. Not at the current time anyway. Some people still hope that will change in the future, but I wouldn't hold your breath.

Also, there is this.

u/LegendReborn · 1 pointr/Games

Ahhh, I see. What you're referring to as the classic controller others are saying is the pro controller.

Apparently, this is the classic controller and the one you are showing is called the classic controller pro.

>I wish I was able to charge the gamepad using the system itself.

3rd party option or this

> hooking up a sensor bar and trying to use that on the plane is a bit.. untenable

Hold B while starting up the Wii U, you will go straight to Wii mode without needing to select anything using a wii mote, then the gamepad has a built in sensor bar (around the camera), so you can use motion controls with just the gamepad - no sensor bar required. You can also order a classic controller pro, wii classic controller, mayflash adapter with a gamecube controller, or a knock off - all of which plug directly in to a Wii mote, but let you play with a more standard control option.

>I can't wait for this (if it's still true)! I'd love playing Mario Kart 8 with my wife when we're without a TV.

Just get 2 other controllers and switch the gamepad to display the race instead of the race/map/horn/items etc. then it's just a tiny TV
