I'm just gonna go ahead and let everyone know that's a Rick roll and here's a link to an actual product:

The most invaluable thing is for you, not passengers, and that's a phone mount. I got this one and I think it's great! You need it because you need to know where you're going and easily follow directions, but you don't want to be holding your phone or looking at your lap. I did my first day (~2 hours) without the mount and then got it the next day. It was great. I'll never not use it.

For pax, I have water, mints, chocolate, and dum dums, but tbh I've been eating most of the lolipops haha! Get what you want and just be friendly. Most (not all, some people are still assholes) pax know that anything beyond a ride and friendly smile is extra and not expected.

u/LoopholeTravel · 10 pointsr/onebagging

When we travel, we will often rent a car to do some exploring. We use offline Google Maps to navigate, and this little magnetic mount to attach the phone to the car's air vent. It's really small and convenient to toss in the bag.

I like it, however, I would like to see a back cover on bottom half to 2/3. Why? Because I have several of these:

https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00PGJWYJ0/ref=oh_aui_search_detailpage?ie=UTF8&psc=1

And it comes with a metal plate you place between your phone and case so the phone stays in place. It looks awesome in the car because there's nothing obscuring the phone. It looks like it's floating.

This happened on my nexus 5 and I accidentally fixed it a few months later by applying a strong, phone-safe magnet to the back from https://www.amazon.com/WizGear-Universal-Swift-Snap-Technology-Smartphones/dp/B00PGJWYJ0/ref=sr_1_1?s=wireless&ie=UTF8&qid=1479141778&sr=1-1

u/ppfftt · 5 pointsr/prius

I searched Amazon reviews for ones that specifically mentioned Prius and ended up with this vent mount. I have it attached to the far left side of the center passenger air vent, just above the LCD screen. It works perfectly and I highly recommend it!

u/cb1037 · 4 pointsr/whatisthisthing

Yeah, something like this one. It's supposed to slide on to your car's vent. Magnetic sticker goes on the phone.

I put the metal piece you see on Amazon on the inside of my back cover. It works fine for me.

u/logan_povich11 · 3 pointsr/Autos

Personally I use a vent mount that is magnetic. I just have the metal plate that comes with it stuck in between the rubber and plastic layers of my otter box.

Try a magnetic phone mount - no-fuss, instant connection. That way you keep your directions close to eye level as you drive drop to drop.

Works great for me.

u/frostbitex · 3 pointsr/Nexus6P

I used to use the unicorn beetle pro. The screen protector is a cheap piece of plastic which didn't sit flat on the screen and scratched easily. I actually just ripped the plastic off and used tempered glass. It is quite durable. It is a bit thicker than most cases and should provide ample protection. As for taking it off an on, it's a bit annoying, but should only take like 10-20 seconds. I'm not sure if it's from me putting my case on and taking it off, but I did notice some of the paint chipping away on the edges where the case would rub up against when putting on or taking off the case. I liked the case overall, but I use one of these https://www.amazon.com/WizGear-Universal-Swift-Snap-Technology-Smartphones/dp/B00PGJWYJ0
I had the metal plate between the case and the phone. The case was a bit too thick, which made the magnetic mount a bit useless. I ended up switching to the Unicorn Beetle Slim and don't look back. The magnetic car mount works perfectly, and I still feel comfortable with the level of protection it provides.

No moving parts on the mount, so nothing to break. Not sure if it's BIFL, but honestly I'm not sure what kind of phone mount is? In any case, I've had no problems. Small metal piece fits inside my phone case, magnet holds phone up.

>So you don't use a case?

I was using the adopted case, but i don't know how the case you are using compares, so trying it without the case could show if there is a difference there?

>Are phone CPUs inconsistent like regular computers? Ie some same model can tolerate more over clock and some might even get too hot regularly, bad thermal paste job or whatever. Just worried I got a kind of punky one maybe.

I don't know any specifics, but I would think they would be similar because they have similar manufacturing processes, but they should all be able to run at the rated clock speed? If you are overclocking yours that could cause the rebooting problems...

And as far as thermal paste goes, in the ifixit teardown, it looks like they just put a glob down, so yours is probably fine. Especially if your whole phone is getting hot, that means the heat is getting from the cpu to the case

I used this one which was stick on, and after a few days it would fall off, due to the excessive tearing weight since the phone was being held out away from the sticking surface.

BIG fan of these. Inexpensive, discrete and functional. Stable. Two in my Forester, two in my Focus and had one in my F150. (Apparently I only like cars that begin with 'F')

u/kellyholden · 2 pointsr/subaru

I've got this one for my 6 Plus, it works well with the phone in Portrait. I really enjoy it.

I've got a Otterbox Commuter style case on my phone, so I stuck one of the round metal discs on the back of the case. (Also comes with rectangle ones) If I placed it more towards the middle, I'm sure I could easily place my phone in landscape.

u/HlValadeen · 2 pointsr/oneplus

Depending on your cars layout this magnetic mount is what I've been using for quite a while now. You slide the mount into your AC vent and there's a metal plate you place in your phone case/stick to your phone. All you do is press your phone against the mount and it holds the phone firmly.

There is this one that attaches to your dashboard instead of the AC vent.

u/Phuc_Mee · 2 pointsr/iphone

I use this, works beautifully, you need to put a metal plate inside the case, which might not work with a real thick case though.

I use this for my car, works great. But its a vent attachment so its not for anywhere else, but its very solid, cheap and holds my XL.

Very minimal too

Taking screenshots is a horrible pain -- also there is an annoying delay, though this might just be Android? I couldn't figure out how to to change the screenshot shortcut if it is possible.

Also because the Wake button is so close to the volume knobs I'm constantly pressing the wrong one by accident.

Consider getting a magnetic car mount like this one -- http://www.amazon.com/WizGear-Universal-Magnetic-Swift-SnapTM-Technology/dp/B00PGJWYJ0/ -- and you'll be glad the headphone jack is at the bottom! The magnetic sticker fits great inside a case.

I see that one. Works great, phone doesn't move. My phone is in a clear case, and the magnet sits inside the case on the back.

u/sam_rowlands · 1 pointr/SubaruForester

I got a cheapo one from the local hardware store, just a couple of bucks, the main part is inserted into the air vents and second part is a simple metal disc that I inserted between the phone and case. I've had it a couple of years, it's small and neat and works really well IMHO.

Edit: looks very similar to this, but is unbranded and the mount part is adjustable.

I just use the one I got on sale from Amazon. It was maybe $5-8. My friend has a different one and they're all about the same. It's really strong and I love the setup, but every once in a while it seems I have to rotate the magnet piece clockwise, like it comes loose or something.

If you get one with a ball socket, it may be better, but then you obviously can't hide the iPhone side of the connection.

There's a bunch like this- this is a different brand but identical product.

I'm a fan of the magnetic ones like this, though vent mount might not be suitable for some cars (my dad's F150 has weird vents it won't fit on).

But if it works, it's great to just get in the car and stick it right on the mount and not fiddle with springs or clips. You do, however, need a phone with a built in magnet (samsung galaxy's have it, perhaps others) or use it with a case (the mount ships with metal discs you stick to the inside of the phone case).

u/bigbillpdx · 1 pointr/Nexus6P

The magnetic mounts are the way to go. I use this variant in two cars and they work great in both for both my 6p and my wife's 5x:

u/Notch__Johnson · 1 pointr/genesiscoupe

Got one of these that I mount in the vent by the A pillar usually. If I'm using Google maps for Navi the A/C keeps the phone cool. It's easy to move around and I also use it in my work vehicle. You need a phone case to put the little metal plates in though.

I used the CD slot type in my last car but it messed the slot up so I didn't like the way it looked when it was not in the cradle. Plus I have a double DIN Pioneer now with no exposed CD slot.

u/amoot329 · 1 pointr/lgv20

Ahh fellow wazer! I gotta say though, I would totally settle for Apple maps or Google maps with the car integration instead.

In my 98 I use a vent mount with a magnetic end. Amazon Link . Basically my vents are stiff and are able to hold my phone up magnetically. Magnets on the vent, metal plate between my iPhone and case. Not sure, though, if the newer circular vents can do the same.

u/southwestern_swamp · 1 pointr/iphone
u/hotmoltengarbage · 1 pointr/mazda

I highly recommend a magnetic mount. I use this one. Actually, my whole family uses them now. It's the best mount we've tried, and we've tried a lot.

The mount is a magnet, and you'll get a magnetic sticker to attach to your phone so it sticks. I adhered the magnet sticker to my phone case, to avoid damaging the phone itself. You can just pop the phone onto the magnetic mount and pop it off. No meddling with annoying levers or clips or anything.

They also make ones that stick to your windshield, in case you don't like the vent-mount setup. :)

For the radar detector, consider hardwiring it (not difficult) and mounting it below the mirror with a mirror mount.
