My brother got me this book, it's more of an artbook, not some grand tome like you're describing but it covers most parts of the lore. But it's also only up to MoP I believe.

If you want more detailed info on specific aspects of the lore I'd check out the Chronical books.

That one

Neither, or both. You don't need any prior knowledge to read it, it's like (well, it literally is) an encyclopedia and it explains you all the basic stuff.

However it doesn't contain the lastest information from Chronicle.

If you want to buy it, buy the new version.

Chronicle is great. Just be aware that it only covers what happens before Warcraft I, so you won't learn about the story of WoW expansions.
