Too much time on this sub led me to buy these cheap cameras for my house. They worked so well that I added them to my retail store.

You can set them to motion detection and you can watch from your phone or laptop. I haven't had any problems at all with them and they've stopped (along with the usual surveillance signs) whatever neighbor was dumping his garbage into my yard on trash day and no neighborhood dogs are shitting in my yard on their walks anymore.

r/letnotmeet has an official guide on the sidebar that has good tips as far as safety/physical security goes. one thing that's not on there are what's called "security bars" that you can buy from amazon. they block in doors/windows/sliding doors from being broken in while you're at home, like when you're sleeping.

i'd also consider posting on trollx for advice as well. there's some of us trolls who've gone through some shit and may be able to give good advice.

for restraining order, for one thing, he'll need the exact address of where he needs to stay away from. since he already knows her home address, i would just be careful putting on there specific locations that he doesn't know about, if that makes sense. restraining orders might only be half as helpful if there isn't some way to catch him violating it. i'd recommend some sort of night security camera. i put these on my tech wishlist after ppl recommended them on the recent r/aww post on the cat triggering the night camera:

as for stopping cold turkey or de-escalating, that's up to her. but whatever she chooses, and hell, even now, she NEEDS to be prepared for his possible actions when she does do it, cuz he's gonna get pissed, which might lead to silent insidious revenge or straight out attack.

that means not going anywhere alone, securing her house and car when she's alone, setting up apps that can be immediately triggered quietly to call for help, carrying pepper sprays/defense stuff depending on local laws, etc etc, there's a lot you can do. and making sure her friends/family/coworkers/employer knows -the more eyes keeping a lookout for him the better (show them a picture of him). these fuckers relish on getting the upper hand and she needs to get in control of the situation. (and yes, i know a lot of this stuff from reading that sub)

also, breaking and entering IS a crime, wherever you are. if she catches that on tape she's golden as far as restraining order or even straight up charging him with it. she should start a journal log, writing down exact dates/times/details of any event, small or big. if it ever goes to the police or court, it'll help tremendously. she can also low-key record conversations with him on her phone, just turn the indicator light switch off.

best of luck and safety to you and your friend.

So, I was looking at this too. Wife and I are prospective foster parents and as first-time moms our paranoia will be pretty high, especially because these kids will effectively be strangers.

BUT, I wanted something inexpensive that didn't require a monitor (ie. another handheld device that I would/could lose) and that if it was broken by a rogue tantrum, I wouldn't lose sleep over it.

I found this guy: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B019MMRV1M/ref=wl_it_dp_o_pC_nS_ttl?_encoding=UTF8&colid=39MQKJ1OP0291&coliid=I3BPVKRFI83PHS&psc=1

I know you said you didn't want video because of the cost, but this is by far the cheapest camera I've seen. Great reviews, easy set up, and just a simple app download for Android or iOS devices. They also came out with a Windows app, so you could view the camera from your PC as well (if that was something you wanted). It also has two-way audio that you could use to calm your child from a distance if you didn't want to enter the room.

The only downside, as it has been noted in some of the reviews, is that the company says in it's privacy policy that it is able to record you/your family for up to 6 seconds at a time and share the videos, presumably for advertisement.

Less, $35, I got this on amazon for this exact reason and so far it's been GREAT. https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B019MMRV1M/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o07_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1 not spam btw. I never know when guests have left the room and would like to clean it asap. So getting a motion alert and clip of them leaving on my phone helps tremendously.

The Yi Home Cameras are really nice for the price. They tend to go on sale for $30 every now and then too. They aren't officially supported with ST, but there are ways to get them to work.

u/thedarkcat · 2 pointsr/homedefense

The cheap approach would be wifi cameras that can store video on SD cards when motion is detected. Based on a quick search, it looks like in theory it should be comfortably possible:

You could get a couple of Wifi IP cameras (720P) for $35 each. I've never used "Yi" brand cameras but presumably they have UI to detect motion and record video (I think that's pretty standard now):
https://www.amazon.com/YI-Camera-Wireless-Security-Surveillance/dp/B019MMRV1M

Then get two 32GB SD cards for $13 each:
https://www.amazon.com/2X-UHS-1-Amplim-32G-TF/dp/B01FNUB44W

Total is $96 before taxes. To check whether or not this will work as well as in theory, I recommend reading lots of reviews and Q&A of the products above (or similar ones you find).

edit:

  1. also maybe allocate $15 to $20 for mounting hardware (eBay).

  2. If your camera needs to be outdoors, a camera like https://www.amazon.com/Ouvis-Waterproof-Wireless-Security-Internet/dp/B01JUG2HKK would be more appropriate $64 each. This particular one doesn't need you to buy SD cards. This is just an example and I suggest doing more research along these lines to find the best quality one.

Sorry this happened, but it looks like at least you learned something. Make sure that first layer is solid! I also run a cheap wifi camera so I can check in on my prints from anywhere. (I use one of these https://smile.amazon.com/YI-Wireless-Suveillance-Security-Nursery/dp/B019MMRV1M/)

This home camera has worked really well for me, and it comes with an app so you can view the video remotely on your phone. It also auto-records any movement.

> The chimes will not be loud enough for me to hear (assuming I installed them).

When you say not loud enough what do you mean? You can get a wireless transmitter then a receiver you could plug in pretty much anywhere in your home.

>Maybe a wifi camera that I monitor?

You could defiantly go with a cheap wifi camera. Something like this maybe: https://smile.amazon.com/YI-Wireless-Suveillance-Security-Nursery/dp/B019MMRV1M/

You would have to think about placement though to get good alerts and it would need power.

I stuck a couple of these outside with no protection to watch a bunny nest this spring, they worked pretty well...

Then again, I bought them for $9.

Like others mentioned Arduino probably isn't the right tools for the job

Why not one of theses? Probably cheaper than you can build anything and they have apps for remote viewing
