If you were willing to do that, your best bet would be to find a pod coffee maker somewhere around campus. Then just use your own coffee pod. WinCo sells them for 40 cents each and you can get them even cheaper on Amazon. You can also buy refillable versions of them.

Or even better, rather than sneaking into prohibited areas, just get one of these or similar. You can put hot coffee into this thing in the morning, and sealed, it will remain too hot to drink until tomorrow morning.

If a $30 thermos is beyond your budget, head on over to any of the ten thousand thrift stores within a mile of campus, or go to the OSUsed store when it's open. They always have vacuum thermoses for sale. You can probably get one for under $5.

Realize, when you're purchasing coffee on campus, or anywhere else, you're not paying for the coffee. You're paying for the convenience. You're paying for the ability to not have to brew it yourself, clean the machine out, have tools and equipment available, etc. And you're paying for someone to stand around all day, just waiting for people to come in looking for coffee. Even if no one comes in for an entire hour, everyone at that shop is getting paid. Plus the cost of the space itself. The vendors on campus all have to pay rent to OSU, just like any other landlord.

In short, $2 really isn't that outrageous for instant, convenient coffee that you don't have to lift a finger for. People often also pay $2 for a bottle of water, when they could get the same water for less than a penny per gallon out of their home tap. You're not paying for the water; you're paying for the convenience.

Hey! I just graduated and I can tell you with certainty that I had a good setup:

Looks like /u/Veritech-1 beat me to the punch on this, but I'd like to add another endorsement for Zojirushi coffee thermoses. I'm a coffee addict and a PhD student, so I spend a lot of time going from place to place with hot coffee in hand. I'm also very hard on my thermoses. Every one I've used eventually gets leaky, cracks, and so on. Not my Zojirushi. I fill it with hot coffee and shove it in my backpack every morning and it has never spilled. I once filled it and forgot it at home. When I came back from work, the coffee was still piping hot. Everyone who needs coffee on the go should own one of these.

This is the thermos for you: Zojirushi Stainless Steel Mug. It holds hot and cold liquids for HOURS.

u/MangyCanine · 9 pointsr/BuyItForLife

Seconded. I think these are also as leak proof as these things get.

The only problem is that 20oz is as large as it gets.

The Sweethome has a list of dorm room essentials.

If you don't have one already, a microwave is a lifesaver.

Good bedsheets are nice to have and they have their recommendation in the link above. I don't know if there are Target stores in the UK, but I really like these Threshold cotton percale sheets. They feel great to sleep on and are affordable.

I really love my Zojirushi travel mug. It has a secure flip top cap, can be easily cleaned, and it's almost too good at insulating hot & cold drinks. You can use it as a regular cup at home and travel with it to class.

Most importantly, keep condoms around. I like Lifestyles Skyns. The Skyn Elite ones are thinner and have torn on me, so be careful.

The most recommended one I know of is this one. Also its on /r/bifl Zojirushi SM-SA60-BA Stainless Steel Mug, 20-Ounce, Black https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00HYOGUM2/ref=cm_sw_r_awd_dejAwb342EFRE

u/[deleted] · 6 pointsr/tea

I would recommend either this Zojirushi or Thermos.
I've done a fair amount of research into this matter. I generally enjoy drinking tea out of glass. But when I'm out in the world and need to be able to have a vessel that will slip into my backpack on cold days without fear that it will break? One of these two treats me just fine.
As someone else has stated, the maintenance and upkeep of such a vessel, due to the tea stains, will be something that you will have to deal with. I have to plan appropriately enough to be able to allow it to breath, as it is generally fairly hot. Overcooking the tea is a concern sometimes. But again, proper planning...

[The Bubba] (https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0186EP0JW/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o01_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1) is what i use and its great. It has a ceramic coating on the inside and its great at keeping heat in.

Edit: The Zojirushi is the dankest of the dank at keeping coffee hot for the longest and has a lock on the cap so you can keep it in a bag and not worry on it spilling.

u/H8Blood · 5 pointsr/Coffee

I'm using a Zojirushi SM-SA60-BA and let me tell you, if you fill the coffee in hot, you'll burn your mouth 7+ hours later. I'm not kidding. This thing retains heat (and cold) like a champ.

10/10 would buy again.

All the people I know who've owned glass tumblers have had them break. I'm usually very careful with my stuff, so I bought one too, but it broke within 6 months. It looked nice while it lasted, but what a waste of $25.

This one from Zojirushi is the best one on the market and a great example of Japanese engineering. They ripped off the design from Nissan, which at the time had the most well-designed tumbler on the market, but they made several modifications that made it even better. The older model maxes out at 16 oz, but the newer model comes in 20 oz. The newer model also has a high quality non-stick lining that should prevent any odors. Also, it's small enough to fit in a BMW cup holder.

They're a little expensive (around $32), but they last forever. My parents have used the older model daily for 3 years, and the mugs still look brand new.

I've been using one for winter hiking. Boiled water and filled it the night before. Spent all day hiking with it in -10F temps. Got back to the hotel at night and the water was still too hot to drink. I usual carry uninsulated cold water bottles to mix with the Zojirushi to get it down to drinkable temps.

This AWS 1kg x 0.1g scale would be the perfect addition.

If you travel and don't already have one, a nice thermos could also be valuable. Zojirushi makes my favorite.

Personally, I haven't had too much success buying teas from Amazon.

u/ShinyTile · 3 pointsr/Coffee

Ozark, read this.

EDIT: To be clear, the RTICs are good too, and if you care about lid performance, check out the Zojirushi or Hydroflask options as well. They're more expensive than the RTIC tumblers, but you get more (in terms of lid performance.) For the Yeti vs RTIC or Ozark though, hard left swipe to the Yeti. They're just ridiculously overpriced. It's literally just branding.

u/orange_teapots · 3 pointsr/Coffee

Funny! I hated having to press a button to access my coffee with the Contigo and prefer my zojirushi lid because it stays out of the way and doesn't move once it's open. There's also a 20oz zojirushi available here!

I also like cleaning the lid of the zojirushi better - I drink cream in my coffee and found that contigo did not come as clean and definitely not as easily. The zojirushi pops apart and everything cleans easily. I did hear that contigo may have improved that, though, but I don't know as I haven't had one in a while. They both lock, so no accidental leaks can happen and each seal so nicely for tossing in a bag with no worries about leaking coffee on your things.

u/afield9800 · 3 pointsr/BuyItForLife

this one is great.

Tried to hyperlink but not sure it worked

Man, you guys need to try the Zojirushi or Thermos Nissan thermoses -- their insulation is superb. I make coffee before school, sip it throughout the day, and it's still not even down to "lukewarm" when buses are getting called for dismissal.

You want one of these.
Zojirushi 480ml flask. I personally brew my coffee, pour it into one of these, and then pour it into an enamelware mug a little at a time when I want some. (I use enamelware because it won't pull as much heat from your coffee as a traditional ceramic mug.)

u/HintOfCinnamon · 2 pointsr/BuyItForLife

Is it this one? If it is, did you happen to keep coffee in it for a while (~half a day?). I have the same problem. People on other forums tend to think that it's the non-stick coating inside that reacts with the stale coffee. IDK if it's true or not. Letting it sit in a baking soda solution, then washing it helped a bit.

this A-M-A-Z-I-N-G, BIFL travel mug

u/worldteapodcast · 2 pointsr/tea

I'd actually forgo the tumbler and go full on thermos. Zojirushi is a fantastic brand out of Japan and their 12/16/20oz lineup is pretty awesome (especially the pouring nozzle and locking mechanism).

I've just ordered one myself. Sure you can't steep tea in it, but you can just do that at home before you leave. At least this way your tea will stay hot or cold, depending on your preference.

u/uselessjd · 2 pointsr/Coffee

They make a 20 oz. The top is pretty genius once you use it. Actually seals totally closed (unlike most travel mugs). My only complaint is that it keeps things too hot sometimes.

u/tatarstas · 2 pointsr/Ultralight

On day hikes I often take this bottle, 7.95 oz on my scale.

On overnighters ... I have a stove and a pot, I can just make something hot whenever I want it.

u/natnguyen · 2 pointsr/Coffee

This is the one I have and I highly recommend it! I’ve had it for two years now and everything is still intact and it still keeps everything hot or cold all day.

u/shiny_roc · 2 pointsr/Dell
  1. Don't put it on the fridge. Condensation is bad for electronics.
  2. Don't use a hair-dryer because that will just bake on all of the non-water components of your coffee.
  3. If you have accidental damage coverage in your warranty and are still within the warranty period, invoke it.
  4. If you don't have accident coverage or are outside the warranty period, you can get Dell to repair it for you, but it might cost as much as buying a new laptop.
  5. You can try taking the whole thing apart and cleaning anything that has coffee on it with electronics cleaner and a lint-free cloth. Dell's service manuals are pretty easy to follow. If it still doesn't work after cleaning, you're probably going to need to replace the motherboard and anything else that got coffee damage.
  6. Get a spill-free coffee thermos.
u/Rufffmuff · 2 pointsr/Coffee

Zojirushi Steel workhorses that stay hot for hours and hours. I really don't understand why folks use conventional mugs given the choice.

> occasionally I make my own coffee and use a thermos much better

Going to hijack this thread in case someone wants my "cheap but picky" setup. Hard to drink anything else:

  • Whole beans from Costco. The one with the elephant on it is great for $18 but Kirkland is fine too.

  • french press from Ikea. $9. (Aeropress if you're just into 1 cup)

  • This grinder - set 3 from from coarsest. 6 seconds. Pour in hot water at ~85*C and steep for 3 mins, press it slowly.

  • Makes 1 huge mug plus one full thermos.

Note that getting used to drinking less coffee is a good thing, and none after lunch if you can. Mostly for sleep quality.
u/xthecharacter · 1 pointr/personalfinance

I think the difference between a drip coffeemaker and an aeropress or pour over is personal preference. The coffeemaker will generally make more coffee at once and takes longer to do so, and takes a lot more time and effort to clean. The aeropress makes 1 (or maybe 2) cups of coffee at once and requires that the drinker makes the cups manually, right before they drink them, but is very easy to clean and brews the coffee very quickly.

I do agree that a mug like this one is a great investment!

I've never heard of those mugs or bottles so I'm not familiar with them . . . But I recently just bought a Zojirushi mug that is 20 oz and I'm in love with it.

I've been able to put hot water in it before I leave for school (usually at 7am) and I have pulled it out still hot at 5pm for tea.

I have also left coffee in there with that time frame and was still able to enjoy a hot cup at 5pm until I left for home around 8pm.

It's also really cool because I've been able to lay it flat in my backpack on top of my books, laptop and binders and it doesn't leak at all. Which I was really paranoid about but after trying it out like that a few times I see now I have nothing to worry about.

In fact I've kind of gotten into the habit of showing it off by having my friends try to unlock it and test it's heat insulation.

Then I have them try to open it while the little mechanisn that allows you to lock the button that opens the mug's lid is locked. They can't so we undo the lock and it comes off pretty gently.

I usually tell them to hold it, and ask if they can feel any heat. Sometimes there's a bit of warmth but nothing that compares to what's inside. Then I take the entire lid off and tell them to hold their hand over it, and their usually surprised by the amount of steam coming off of it.

If you look at their reviews on Amazon you'll also see I'm not the only one who was impressed by it.

Good taste. I think you would like English Cadbury milk chocolate and (Yes, I'm cheating.) a Zojirushi thermos. I had the Contigo on my list but my research said that this is much better.

And I don't think we've met! Hi, I'm 82634 - nice to meet you! How'd you find us?

Have you considered the Zojirushi that has a non stick coating on the inside? (Zojirushi SM-SA60-BA Stainless Steel Mug, 20-Ounce, Black https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00HYOGUM2/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_noqMzbRAYZA5V).

I had mentioned the Osaka https://www.amazon.com/dp/B019QTUZAU/ which is a metal pour over. Now you just need a metal or plastic carafe and cup option. You could try just brewing straight into a Zojirushi https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00HYOGUM2/ or some other vacuum insulated thermos (hydro flask, kleen kanteen, etc.) that the pour over device would sit on. If you want just a filter instead of an all in one device like the Osaka I linked, they also have that https://www.amazon.com/dp/B019QTBOK0/. Also there are tons of metal mugs as well.

u/Flagship2 · 1 pointr/Coffee

I actually recommend this zojirushi over the one on sale because despite it being more expensive and even more phallic shaped, the lid fully opens when you press the release button. OP's thermos has a sticky latch, that while still works, is slightly annoying.

This Zojirushi 20oz black thermos

I heard that it was amazing for retaining heat and also keeping drinks cool. Theres an identical 16oz version so I’m kinda on the fence as I’ve never used a thermos before.
