I lived in a 2 bedroom with 2 kids under 2 and was the primary cleaner so I know where you're coming from. With a 5 mo old you're going to be cooking/cleaning all the time. That said, organization and clearing clutter are your best tools. Here are a few tips outside of that. Get a toy basket for each room that your kid will be in regularly so you have a place to put toys without walking all over the apartment. A shower curtain liner like this with mesh pockets kept our tiny bathroom from feeling overwhelmed with kids toys. We also had an over the toilet freestanding shelf like this because there were no other surfaces but YMMV. I completely understand not wanting to buy more things on a simple living subreddit. Keep food to the kitchen/dining room as much as possible. For cooking clean as you go and/or use one pot recipes like these to minimize cleanup. We made the first chicken one Sunday and it was great.
