Some of it may be the design changes every year making them collectable. Also can't discount the panda effect. Here are generic mugs for 2.50/mug while comparable Panda Mugs range from 10-15 dollars each.

Amazon- they have a lot of options. The forks with skinny necks don't really work that great but look great. Go figure...

Also- check out the plates to match. We didn't like the looks of the palm leaf plates but liked these
