I use an arbor press - haven't modified it at all, just use my hands to keep the chisels straight. Basically, I use the ram ofthe arbor press to apply pressure to the top of a chisel, just like a mallet would, but much quieter. Also, you're less likely to break one of the prongs off the chisel, which seems to be commom especially if you're using cheap Chinese chisels

Here's the cheap arbor press I bought off Amazon

Works fine for me. I am mostly making bags and wallets, so thin, soft-tempered leathers. You might need something more heavy duty if you are chiseling throughh 12+oz of leather.

Sounds like what you need is a mini arbor press

A5 notebook cover for a friend made with 5/6oz natural chromexcel with #47 print from Maverick leather company. 1mm brown thread at 6mm spacing. Made to fit this notebook.

Pen is a TWISBI ECO with Iroshizuku kon-peki ink, would recommend.

First time working with chromexcel, burnishes surprisngly well, while the print adds a nice texture, I wish I'd gotten a "regularly" finished one.

Can post pictures of plans if interested...

QUESTION:

First time setting snaps, got a complaint from a downstairs neighbour... Does anyone know if I can use this arbor press along with these rivet setting tools? I'm mainly concerned about whether the pressing action will make it more difficult to set the snap/rivet, it was hard keeping the post straight with a hammer.

Screw that. You can get a drill press for under $400.

edit: Here's a much much cheaper version. http://www.amazon.com/Grizzly-G4018-Arbor-Press-Ton/dp/B00FSD5NCE/ref=pd_sim_sbs_e_1?ie=UTF8&refRID=1724AKA2YRA1393EX3WB
