You do you, you'll likely feel self conscious at first. Once you're in the water actually working out no one will notice. If you're uncomfortable out of the water, just wrap a towel around your waist until you get in.

If you're looking for a speedo with a bit more coverage look into the square leg briefs. They're a bit more coverage, but are still conforming and offer minimal drag.

Getting something square cut like a drag suit. It provides more modesty than jammers without needlessly covering your legs.

If you are doing serious pool competitions, you can get a slicker-than-skin jammer to wear in races.

Generally, most swimmers train in speedo cut suits. They feel more comfortable (this is subjective, of course), and tend to last a bit longer because they're fully lined.

Jammers came about as suit technology improved. As materials had lower drag coefficients than the skin, it made sense to use that material to cover more skin to slide through the water. More recent advances mean compression gear also aids muscle recovery and can improve race efficiency.

More novice swimmers tend to be attracted to jammers for two reasons. They see world class athletes wearing longer suits (these athletes frequently train in briefs, but race in tech suits) and the jammers provide a bit more modesty, which I get -- it's a weird outfit to wear, the speedo.

That depends how much skin you want to show, and what style you're going for.

For tops, there are lots of options. The sports bra type look, which shows your belly but not much chest. There's a cropped rash guard which covers even more chest but still shows the belly. Then you've got the bikini that shows the most of everything, or the tankini, which covers the belly but is low cut at the top like a bikini. There's an even longer version of tankinis now called a swim dress that I think is cute. I love this long sleeved, belly-showing rash guard too.

Now, if you don't want to show a lot of skin there's a short sleeved rash guard, or long sleeved rash guard that all cover the belly and chest completely. They have all kinds of colors of these things.

For the bottoms, there are always plain old board shorts for everyone. There are shorter ones too. There are tons of colors and lengths for those.

You could wear a bikini bottom by itself or under your board shorts. There are a zillion colors and styles of those. There are swim boxer briefs that you can wear alone or under shorts too. If you want the bikini look but are concerned about the shape of your genitals, there are plenty of bottoms in the men's clothing section that look fantastic and would be easy to match to a bikini or tankini top.

If you're talking about Trunks, wear underwear or a Speedo underneath them. Some guys even wear jock straps under their's.

However, what I've found is actually more comfortable is to wear Jammers underneath them. The great thing about the Jammers is that you can then use them if you want to swim for exercise.

I'll always recommend 0-1650 in the sidebar, and a jammer is worth the $25-35 you will spend for a polyester one that will last you a very long time. Trunks will likely be discouraging and hinder form.

If you have a local swim shop, I'd wager their jammers are cheaper than Dick's by a wide margin.

Square shorts

I prefer these as jammers stretch over my knees as they stretch out over a month.

The speedo jammers do tend to be a bit thin - I feel they are more sleek even for a non-tech suit. Not sure why yours are becoming loose? Are you wringing them out during the wash? I recommend just gently squeezing out the water then rolling them into a dry towel to get more water off before laying flat to dry. A bit anal yes, but it keeps my swimwear in good shape.

My most recent pair lasted about a year of training 6 days a week. Just replaced it with the same model.

I have been a competitive swimmer for roughly 9 years and the highest recommendation I can give is a Speedo Endurance Plus jammer. They last about a year swimming 1-3 times a day 6 days a week. They usually only go out because the drawstring breaks or the suit comes apart at the seams. They have similar waist sizes to jeans and regular trousers.
