Another idea. Need to have the lights far from the power source? Use this cable with these connectors. A slight bit of soldering (use heat shrink tubing around the solder joints) and you're in the game!

I used something similar to this RGB strip for my build. I found JST connectors worked well for me, one wire for the color I wanted, and one wire for common cathode. Personally I chose red for the rear, green for front left and blue for front right. This has helped me to keep orientation much better than just a two color setup.

Yes, the original stereo is just a standard double DIN. You'll just need either a double din stereo or a single DIN and a DIN pocket filler, something like this.
