I've shaved my mashers and bang/taint/funhole for years and years, so let me contribute.

So let's assume you've never blessed yourself with a shorn scrotum: There are two methods you can use to rid yourself of hair. I'll go over both, since I've done both extensively.

---

>Shaving:

USE A NEW RAZOR FOR THIS. Old razors deteriorate and the blades get bent/dulled. You don't want dull blades tugging at hairs and nicking you up down there.

  1. Trim up. Get a body-hair trimmer like a Norelco Bodygroom or just a regular hair-trimmer and take care most of the bush. Go with the shortest guard it'll allow-- Not using a guard is a good way to get a few nicks, not something you want down in your dangly bits. You want to get yourself short enough where a razor won't get caught and cut you up in masses of hair.

  2. Get in the shower, and get that bitch nice and hot. You don't want to try shaving dry, hell no. Wash your hair, brush your teeth, do all of your regular shower things to give your pubes a bit to get wet and soften up. This'll make it so much easier, trust me.

  3. Start shaving WITH the grain. Make a few passes. Don't press down on the razor, just let it do its job. You won't get it all in one go, and that's fine.

  4. Go across the grain. If your hair looks like this: |||||, shave in this ---> direction, or this <--- direction. The best would be doing a pass of each.

  5. Go against the grain. Now, at this point, if you feel smooth enough, feel free to stop. Going against the grain may cause irritation and ingrown hairs, so know your body and know how your hair responds. The biggest lesson is DO NOT PRESS DOWN ON THE RAZOR. You will only irritate your skin and nick yourself. Be patient and take your damn time.

  6. Finish the job. If you shave your dick, you must also shave your balls, otherwise you might as well just not even do it. It may be scary the first time taking a razor to your jumblies, but it's simple and quite safe, if you're careful (For the record, I've never nicked myself shaving down below, yet I can butcher my face when I'm not careful). Just take the sack in one hand and GENTLY pull it to stretch the skin, and run the razor lightly over it, front and back, starting the stroke from the underside of your dick and dragging down towards your feet. Don't bother too much with grain direction here, it won't matter that much.

  7. The Gooch/Ass/Asshole: You should also run over these areas with a hair trimmer/bodygroom before you go at it with a razor. The secret here is the same as the rest of your sensitive bits: Go slow, don't press down with the razor, and relax. The taint is tricky, but you can navigate it by feel pretty well. The ass/asshole is simple, except for the hole. If you're shaving your ass, you aren't gonna leave the hole hairy, so when you shave it, shave starting from the pucker and stroke AWAY. Do not shave ACROSS the sphincter, else you're just asking for a rough ride. Remember: DO NOT PUSH DOWN ON THE RAZOR.

For your balls, you might want to make a run over them later when you're dry. Helps get those stray hairs.

    >Post-Shave Care:

Once you get out, pat-dry the areas you've shaved. If you get razor burn, get some Vitamin E cream or moisturizer and spread a little down there. This will help the skin heal, and probably cool things off. I like to pat a little Gold Bond down there, because if I'm going to be fancy enough to shave my balls, I'm going to powder them like an English Nobleman.

Itching: This is normal if this is your first time shaving/it's been a while since you've shaved. You shouldn't itch as bad or even at all the second time around, so just tough it out.

Farts: You'd better be ready, because you can no longer sneak these fuckers. The bare skin will amplify your ass air to trumpet-like levels. Be prepared to use your flesh-valve a lot more efficiently after this.

Sweat: You might feel like your ass/gooch is a lot sweatier than usual. It's not, you just lack friction from your now-missing hair down there. Invest in some boxer-briefs if it bothers you. You get used to this as well.

    >Depilatory Creams

Alright, so now that we've covered shaving, let's discuss using chemical hair removers. I wouldn't use Nair on your private parts, you will burn yourself. You have to find something for sensitive skin (Which I'm sure Nair has now). I am a fan of Magic Shave. It's a powder you mix with water, then slather all over your crotch, wait a while, then rub off gently with a washcloth. You can get if off Amazon, or find it at most any drugstore in the shaving/hair removal aisle. Takes the hair right off and leaves you SMOOTH AS FUCK. It's messier and takes a little more time, but it's worth it in the end.

They do sell it as a pre-mixed cream, but ever time I've used it it's been very lackluster, even after leaving it on for several minutes past the recommended time.

  8. Test it somewhere like your inner thigh. Mix a small bit, put it on for the prescribed amount of time (7 or so minutes, in my case), and wash it off. Wait a day to see if there are any adverse effects. Skipping this step is not recommended, seeing as a small allergic reaction on your thigh is a lot easier to handle than one all over your fucking dick.

  9. Mix. I use a mason jar, put in equal parts of the power and water, and shake it up. The I use something like a rubber spatula to scoop it out and slather it from dick (Try to limit getting any on the glans. It won't kill you, but you don't generally want depilatory cream on sensitive membranes like that) to asshole. The more you use, the better. Be sure to place a towel under you/do this in the tub to catch any that might drip.

  10. Wait. Set a timer and just stand around a bit. Brush your teeth. Floss. I don't care, just wait out the 5-7 minutes.

  11. Hop in the shower. Lukewarm water is the best for this stuff, I'd avoid going really hot though. Grab a washcloth and slowly rub the stuff off in a circular motion while under the stream. You might have to give some hairs a gentle tug to get them out, but it shouldn't take you any real effort. You may miss spots, and that's okay, you can get them next time. You should probably have a set washcloth just for this, because Magic Shave does have a tendency to stain.

  12. Pat dry. If you left it on a little too long, it might feel somewhat like razor burn. Use some Vitamin E/Moisturizing cream on it and dial the time back a little next time.

All in all, I much prefer using Magic Shave to rid myself of hair, because it leaves me MUCH smoother and isn't as expensive as wearing razor cartridges out. Enjoy shaving, and know that your girlfriend/boyfriend will REALLY appreciate it.

EDIT: Thank you for the gold, kind soul! May your balls be eternally smooth and velvety.

Probably will be buried.

Most people are posting about manscaping but I'd like to offer a method instead of just saying do it.
I use a product called magic shave powder, link below. It's like Nair but won't fry your skin and will leave you porn-star smooth. Just add water, stir until it becomes creamy and apply to area for 5-10 minutes. Then just wash it off and watch the hair fall away. A trim before had would be best so you can get the cream onto the skin.

Trust me, it works amazingly. Link:

Nah thats so much work.

I used this

https://www.amazon.com/Honest-Amish-Beard-Balm-Conditioner/dp/B009NNFB0O

Put it in after I shower and I had a girl tell me by beard was as soft as her cat.

u/Trollkarlen · 39 pointsr/AskMen

Here are the Amazon reviews on it

There are some downsides though. It's messy (My sink looks like a war zone afterwards) but easy to clean up even when dry, its smelly, and you can't "partially" shave so your ass will be SMOOTH. Some people have bad reactions to stuff like this so try it on a small patch of arm/chest/leg whatever first, just to make sure your body is fine with it.

But for me, well worth those downsides, works super well.

u/lilmissmoonshine · 23 pointsr/TheGirlSurvivalGuide

Try a product called Magic Shaving Powder. It's not really for shaving, it dissolves the hairs but is much much milder than Nair. It also says it's "formulated for black men" but it works just as well for me as a white girl on my sensitive bits. You can find it here or in pretty much any pharmacy.

u/sdonaghy · 22 pointsr/everymanshouldknow

There are 3 products any guy with a beard should use. The first is a beard specific shampoo, i prefer Professor Fuzzworthy. Use this daily in the shower. Next is the beard Balm this is really what will help with the dandruff. It keeps your skin moist and beard soft. Use it one or twice a day. The last item is beard oil, this will help a little with the dandruff but is more for keeping your beard soft and preventing split ends. Use this as needed, especially if you touch your beard a lot.

u/jedale · 21 pointsr/datingoverthirty

The nice thing about beards is that they're easily removed. So go for it!

Some tips:

  • Beards require care, just like hair. In fact they require more care, because your face doesn't produce as much oil as your scalp does. Invest in some decent beard shampoo & conditioner, and some beard oil. I use Professor Fuzzworthy's for the former and Rangerfor the latter. I shampoo every other day. The beard oil goes in at least once per day (after showering), and I might apply it a second time in the evening if I'm going out and/or if the beard is feeling dry. Make sure that you massage the shampoo and oil all the way down to your skin; bearddruff is a thing.
  • Invest in a decent trimmer. Doesn't have to be expensive! I use this thing; it has guards in 1/8" increments out to 1", and the guard can also be repositioned slightly to get you even more precise control.
  • Once you have a length you like don't be afraid to get the occasional professional trim in order to get nice lines and fading and whatever else you're into. I've had my beard pretty short for the past few months so I haven't bothered, but I'm growing it back out again and once I hit a length I'm happy with I'll probably start getting it cared for once per month or so.

If it makes you feel better, no one ever taught me about beard growth or how suits should fit or stuff like that. I've just figured it all out for myself in the past few years. Get yourself some beard balm/oil like this or this, and also a boars hair brush like this. Use the balm/oil while it's still just slightly damp after the shower, followed by a brushing after. Your beard will soon be a thing of manly silkiness. Here's style and trimming maintenance.

u/dubious_luxury · 15 pointsr/starterpacks

That's where Magic Shave comes in.

u/notoneofyourfans · 14 pointsr/sex

Get Magic Shaving Powder. No blade is required. It is super cheap and your balls come away feeling like two eggs in a silk pouch. But you have to follow the amount of time it is to stay on the area you are removing hair from or it will burn like the pits of hell for a couple of days. I use it for clearing wild brush and then maintain with a good shaver....

u/Carb0nFiber · 13 pointsr/MtF

Buy shaving powder on Amazon, mix it 1 to 1 with water and just coat your body, wait 15 minutes, it's gentle unlike Nair and doesn't burn, just wash off with a warm cloth and all the hair is gone, I'll post the Amazon link

Good looking beard! As an owner of a Persian beard, I find just a little bit of gloss can help reduce the waviness of my beard and makes it look much more legit. Just a thought. Also I realize the product is expensive for how little you get, but you really don't need to use that much to see a difference. Let me know if you try it!

Waxing is a good way to rid yourself hair and all but personally it's just really awkward to do without a helping hand!

I'd recommend using Magic hair removal powder; you just mix it with water, slap it on yo butt (or anywhere you want to use it), wait 5 minutes, and wash it off.

It's super good if you're like me and have sensitive skin, it's like hair removal cream but I find that it's much gentler on your skin (plus you can adjust the water to powder ratio to how you want it). The only problem I've had with it is when I've let my ass get too hairy and used it there's like a few hairs here and there that weren't removed but when that happens you can just shave it off without getting shaving rashes.

Definitely recommend giving it a try if you want a nice smooth buttox.

u/ValuableGear · 8 pointsr/BeardAdvice

You might not get the beard you wanted, but what you have can get close, minus the connecting mustache. Don't sweat that.

First: Shampoo your beard every time you shampoo your hair, and use a heavy beard balm after you dry it as part of your morning routine. I use honest amish heavy duty. Use a bb sized amount, rub between your hands real good, and run through your beard and mustache.

Second: After applying balm, comb and flatten. Mustache to the sides, cheeks down and back. I do chin down and neck up, but experiment with all down too.

Third: Right before your next shower, comb your beard and break out your trimmers. 1 change from step 2, comb your mustache straight down over your lip, but do comb the mustache at the corner of your mouth to the sides. You want to trim any mustache hairs that hang over your lip JUST to the top of where your upper lip changes color back to your face tone. Don't trim all your mustache hairs to the same length, just carefully use the bare trimmer to clip the hairs that hang over your lip. Put two fingers above your Adams apple and trim from there down your neck to establish a center. Now trim a neck line. Guide here. Don't worry about a cheek-line yet, do that in a week or two. Ask a roommate/family member/trusted friend for help trimming your neckline. Awkward, but less awkward than messing up your neckline :).

Fourth: Wait a week. Your hair should begin to "train" and stay in those directions more often. Give it a week and see how you feel. If you're still unhappy with progress, either go to a barber with beard experience or go with the other suggestion to try a goatee. Keep the mustache trimmed like step 3 and comb every day.

In the end, not having the beard you want feels terrible, but your beard is not terrible. Confidence is acting like you have or can get what you want. Stay confident my friend, and your beard will be awesome.

For me, the most important thing when starting out is to apply beard oil daily. Yes, daily.

Start your morning with beard oil. Place the bottle right next to your toothbrush so right after you brush your teeth, you are applying the oil. I can't overstate this enough.

For my beard I use 8 drops of beard oil every morning, which when dropped into my palm measures about the size of a dime. That's plenty.

When beginning, start with 2-3 drops and work your way up monthly until you reach a dime size (maximum nickel size and that's for much longer beards than mine) and make sure you get that oil right into your beard and onto your skin. Trust me, your face will thank you later.

I can honestly say I've never experienced the "itch phase" do to disciplining myself with the beard oil, some days applying it before dinner when I get off work after a long day (I work outside for FedEx so my beard takes a pounding with the wind coming into my truck and the elements).

In regards to my personal routine, I comb the beard oil through my beard with a Kent comb (highly recommend!) upwards, then downwards — getting all the oil into all parts of my beard — and then after this I apply a thumbnail size amount of beard balm, repeating the same process with my Kent comb, up and down.

After this, I apply my mustache wax. I use about a half of my thumbnail. That’s plenty to get the ‘stache to stay put.

I rub the wax between the pads of my index finger for about 10-15 seconds to get it pliable and then apply with the assistance of my thumbs, working my way from the center to the ends.

I comb the wax through a few times with one of those small mustache Kent combs and then lightly use my fingers to form the handlebar.

The entire process takes no more than 5 minutes. Certainly beats shaving, which I despise.

Here are the 3 products I’ve been using over the last few months of growing my “yeard” (year long beard) and have been VERY satisfied.

1️⃣ Honest Amish Beard Oil

2️⃣ Honest Amish Beard Balm

3️⃣ Bearded Bastard Mustache Wax

All the best on your beard journey. 👊🏻

Hello beard friend. I will recommend a product to you. Amazon carries a Hair Mask product. Pure Body Naturals Hair Mask https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B01N5M26PI/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o00_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1
Use it up to twice a week, it will soften and make your beard hair silky and so damn soft. Its the ultimate conditioner for hair.
Also, beard oil is your best friend. Use a high quality one. I recommend a simple one Leven Rose https://www.amazon.com/Leven-Rose-Fragrance-Leave-Conditioner/dp/B00IB6IAOS/ref=sr_1_1_s_it?s=beauty&ie=UTF8&qid=1497241471&sr=1-1&keywords=levenrose+beard+oil use it multiple times in a day. Your beard length 4-5 drops 2-3 times a day will keep it soft, supple and your skin under the beard quite happy. Good Luck Friend!

I use Honest Amish beard balm. Beardbrand is another popular brand of beard oil. Another nice gift might be a boar's hair brush for his beard (especially if it's 100% real boar's hair).

u/przm_ · 6 pointsr/islam

Bearded 19 year old here. Size is the same as this dude's beard. Having a beard is really high maintenance (well at least for me). If I don't take care of it for a week it will get out of control (it's funny because I'm not even hairy, like I don't even have any chest hair LOL).

I use natural beard oil so that I don't have any weird hairs sticking out. This is the one I use, it's freaking amazing. I put a few drops onto my palm, rub my hands together, and rub them gently into my beard and skin underneath the beard.

I have a really small beard brush that I keep with me in my backpack at school, because when I do wudu and wet my face I need to reshape my beard so that all the hairs are flowing in the same direction. It's really small and you can grip the entire thing with your hand.

I trim my beard every other day to make sure it looks really clean and sharp. I like to be well groomed so yeah, there's that.

Ooooh I just found something on the holy grail product recs that I tried and found worked really well! It's called SoftSheen-Carson Magic Regular Strength Shaving Powder. It's targeted (I believe)
towards African-American men who have sensitive skin and can't shave. It's a depilatory powder that you mix with water and spread over whatever area you want to remove hair from. It worked AMAZINGLY well on my legs & bikini area. Absolutely no sensitivity/tingling/redness/irritation and I haven't had any issue with ingrown hairs. The only issue is that it kind of smells? But honestly I didn't find it too bad (though I bought the yellow one which is labelled as "fragrant"). I found it at my local grocery store in the ethnic hair care section - it was less than $2. It's also available on Amazon.

Here's a link to the holy grail thread.

u/vehementvelociraptor · 5 pointsr/AskMen

Okay so it's a bit messy, but it works WONDERS:

Get some Magic Shave. The powder stuff. All walmarts and walgreens carry the stuff. Get maybe two heaping spoonfuls into a small cup, mix with approximately 1:1 amount of water (maybe start with a bit less). It takes a minute or two of stirring to work it in, but it should be a consistency slightly thicker than water.

Slather that all over your balls. Really get a good coating. It's messy, so maybe do it in the shower. Wait 7 minutes (I just reddit on my phone). Then turn the shower on at lukewarm temperature and slowly rinse it off, also you might have to massage/tug a bit. All that hair will fall right off.

Smooth as balls, literally. And no blades or sharp bits. some people are sensitive to deploratory cream. Test out on you inner elbow or knee first. Might take you a couple tries to get the right consistency/potency.

u/godzilla1517 · 5 pointsr/answers

Okay, if you want BABY SMOOTH testicle and ass area, use this shit. https://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B0048ZIFA0/ref=mp_s_a_1_1_a_it?ie=UTF8&qid=1501218836&sr=8-1&keywords=Magic+shave+powder

I saw it in an older thread when someone asked this same question, bought a can myself, and I've never looked back. This product will completely clear your nutsack of any hair whatsoever when you use it properly according to the directions. Do not shave first, otherwise you may get razor burn, and the product does not feel good whatsoever when it gets into small cuts, in fact it is quite painful and may sway your opinion on the stuff negatively. Just do what it says on the package, and MAKE SURE you do the test run on a small area somewhere else so you can see if you're allergic to it or whatever. This shit will get your balls as smooth and hairless as they were when you were 6 years old.

The only negative thing I have to say about it is that it kinda stinks, and you have to sit there with this nasty liquid on your nuts for about 8 minutes, but other than that it's great. 9/10 do recommend

u/CampCodeCycle · 5 pointsr/TrollXChromosomes

Conditioner is okay but it's really strong and not made for beard hair. I use a beard shampoo every few days and apply a beard balm every day. Trust me, if you liked it with conditioner these are two purchases that will have a huge return .

I'm not sure that this is a trimming issue (unless you took off some length), but rather after you grow your beard past a certain length you can start to see the natural wave that the hair has to it. Mine does the same thing.

I can usually comb the "flair" out using some Honest Amish Beard Balm. If it's a bad flair day I will straighten it out using a blow dryer on low/med heat and a comb, but I use this method sparingly, as drying out the beard too much can cause split ends.

u/zobger · 5 pointsr/AskMenOver30

If I leave me beard without oil for a few days it starts to get really unorganized, dry and scraggly. Most beard oils I have used reduced this to some extent : )

(Not affiliated in anyway with any of those companies)

u/youmaycallme_v · 4 pointsr/everymanshouldknow

I also have a beard. I usually keep it relatively short, but since I've grown it out, I've had this same issue. I tried beard oil (specifically this one) and a beard brush (this one), and since then, I've been beardruff free! The oil really helps keep your skin healthy, which prevents any flakes from forming to begin with, and the brush helps the oil really get in there and keeps your beard looking good.

Of course, I oil and brush my beard every morning after showering, and I would probably recommended anyone else with a beard do the same, but to each their own.

Also, check out this post on /r/beards that's helpful for learning about beard oil

Edit: Also, other people mentioned using normal shampoo/conditioner on your beard. DO NOT DO THAT. The types of oils in your beard are different for those in your hair. Using normal hair care products for your beard can result in a dried out beard, split ends, and other issues.

u/betsybraddock · 4 pointsr/AskWomen

You can totally just buy a lotion that can be used anywhere on your body, including your face. Unless you're acne prone most lotions should be totally fine (unless it's specifically for cracked skin or eczema or something similar because that's probably too intense for your face). If you are acne prone, there are lots and lots of lotions specifically for that. If you have a beard my husband uses this stuff and it's awesome.

All pubic hair grows really fast. Nair or Veet will burn like a mf because the tissues of the groin are "sensitive" to put it mildly.

Magic Shaving Powder.

I recommend this 110%. I use it fairly regularly and have no itching, no burning, nothing. It gets you completely smooth but is not a harsh chemical. Can get it for like 3 bucks at Walmart/amazon.

u/HandsofManos · 3 pointsr/malegrooming

I've used this
http://www.amazon.com/Magic-Shave-Shaving-Powder-Gold/dp/B0048ZIFA0/ref=pd_bxgy_hpc_img_y before. It works pretty well, though it makes a bit of a mess.

u/Iowa_Dave · 3 pointsr/malegrooming

Have you ever tried Shaving Powder?

It basically dissolves the hair. It's used by guys with very curly whiskers that want to burrow back into the skin.

u/Sissykatiexx · 3 pointsr/Sissy

I've used the creams several times and most of the time it works great. However, it has a really strong smell that can stink up your bathroom and if you're not careful you can give yourself chemical burns. As someone said earlier in the thread it can get pricey too. That's why I moved to this depilarory.
https://www.amazon.com/Magic-Shaving-Powder-ounce-fragrant/dp/B0048ZIFA0

You just mix the powder with water and apply it on your skin like the cream. It's much cheaper so you can do you're whole body if you'd like. Also doesn't smell nearly as strong as the others and it's never affected my skin in a negative way like Nair/veet has done in the past. Everyone's skin is different though so keep that in mind!

Don't forget to exfoliate your skin to prevent ingrown hairs and bumps! Good luck!

u/PuhTayter · 3 pointsr/egg_irl

Oh of course!

What I use might be a little unorthodox and more time consuming, but it sure as hell beats taking a razor to hairy /man/ legs

First I use Magic Shaving Powder https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0048ZIFA0/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_i_GuX0DbFDNDSEY

It gets rid of 90% of the hair when you follow the directions. But it takes a while and can be messy if you're doing a FBS all at one time.

Then the next day, because it's not advised to shave right after using the powder, I use a razor to get the rest and get everything smoooooth

I would be advised for sensitive skin areas because it is essentially burning off your hair at the root.

I just use Gillette 3 blade razors and Cremo Shave Lather for my face and everywhere else because it is great at fighting razor burn

u/MTNlogistics · 3 pointsr/beards

Remember that most shampoos dry out hair...

  • Try to shampoo your beard as little as possible. Once a week is enough. When you do clean it, I recommend using organic soaps or at the very least shampoos that moisturize and are designed for kinky/curly hair. There are also numerous shampoos and soaps made specifically for beards. You can use a moisturizing/detangling conditioner as much as you like, but don't get crazy.

  • Apply beard oil or balm at least once a day. I recommend this or this, but I hear good things about Fuzzworthy as well.
  • Buy a boar bristle brush, and brush your beard throughout the day.
  • Take your vitamins! Vitamins and minerals such as b-complex, d, zinc, and iron all promote healthy looking hair.

Follow these steps and your beard will be lustrous in no time!
u/AskYous · 3 pointsr/Islaam

Check out the beards subreddit.

I've had a beard for about a couple years now. Here's my advice to any Muslim who just started:

General Islaamic Tips
-

  • Remember Allaah is rewarding you for doing so. If people are making fun of you, Allaah will reward you for your patience.
  • Get ready for Muslims to tell you to shave it off, or "just cut it from the sides a little bit."
  • Get ready to be called "Shaykh."
  • Get ready for everyone to think you're fluent in Arabic. And if you're not, get ready for them to turn into animals and get angry you're growing a beard but don't know Arabic.
  • Remember that the pagans and idol worshipers grow their mustaches and shave their beards. You're countering them in their movement, expressing to them and to Allaah your disapproval for their Shirk and their people and Allaah loves that.
  • Memorize the proofs for growing the beard. Because Muslims debate you and get angry and say it's not required.
  • Remember that what is above the eyes and below the chin is permissible to trim.

    Grooming Tips
    -
  • When sleeping on your side, remember to have your beard touching the pillow in a way that when you wake up, it doesn't mess it up.
  • Use beard oil. It keeps it shiny and good looking, and a tiny bit straighter. This is a good one.
  • If you want more straight hair, use beard balm. This is a good one.
  • Use scissors to cut the extra long hairs. Extra long hairs that grow separate from the other hairs make the beard look messy. If you keep those trimmed, your beard will look beautiful. Trimming the beard after a fist length is part of the Sunnah of the companions.
  • Remember to look at your beard from the side too when grooming on the morning.
  • Remember to Shampoo it just like you shampoo your normal hair.
  • I don't remember the source, but I read that what is below the jaw line and above the eyes is permissible to cut (since it's not part of the beard).

    Good Online Tools
    -
  • /r/beards for emotional support.
  • Good YouTube channels:
  • The Beard Baron
  • Beard Brand
  • Al-Albaanee's beard debate.

    Other Tips
    -
  • If food bits falls into your beard, simple patting or hitting on the beard takes them out.
  • Get ready for compliments. "Nice beard, bro!"

May Allaah make the beard easy for you and give you a great experience!
u/Psych277 · 3 pointsr/everymanshouldknow

I like the Honest Amish Beard balm much more than the Beardology. Its softer and easier to work with. I got the Beardology balm as part of a package thing with the oil. Beardology is closed until after the holidays. In my search for "the perfect beard oil" I found that you can't really go wrong with whatever you pick. There are so many companies, small and large, that make the stuff. You can make it yourself if you're so inclined. Most have jojoba or argan oil as the main oil and then other oils to add scent so it's preference really.

All I can say is read up on what you like or what you think your brothers will like and go from there. You really can't go wrong with most of these beard products.

I am a bit amatur as well but got some good advice from others. I have had a rough time getting some of my beard curls on one side of my face to stay down. I have had the best luck using beard oil and combing it a couple to 3 times a day real quick to tame it.
I know your pain on a good barber close by. I had to drive an hour to get mine trimmed. Not a big deal I just make an afternoon out of it. Just make sure you go somewhere they know what they are doing and they can help you out quite a bit since they will actually see you in person and hopefully suggest things specifically for you.

Here is my bit of advice and what I use.

First get a couple good combs, some beard oil and possibly some wax for your moustache.

This is what I have:

I use Kent Combs:
http://www.amazon.com/Kent-Hand-Made-General-Grooming/dp/B000YB5NRA/ref=sr_1_cc_1?s=aps&ie=UTF8&qid=1421265415&sr=1-1-catcorr&keywords=Kent+Hand+Made+General+Grooming+Comb+4T

u/ViziTronMan · 3 pointsr/Advice

I personally would check out /r/beards

I was wondering the same thing a while back when i wanted to grow mine out, mostly because im 33 and never had the chance to grow it out before, that is where i learned about bear oil, if you are persistent and use it regularly, it will actually get pretty soft. This is the stuff that i personally use, but there is a pretty big range of products with and without scents and extra vitamins to keep it healthy. If i grow mine out, i will wash my face every morning and evening with hot water, then put a couple of drops in between my fingers and thumb and stroke it into the hairs and repeat till you get all if not most of the hair. Before i started using it, i thought the oil might make my beard feel oily, but it doesn't, the hairs actually absorb it pretty well, but everybody has different genes and if it feels oily, it probably means you're using too much for your own and can probably use a dry towel to pat off any extra.

>This daily skin and facial hair lotion acts as an outstanding anti-itch solution and conditioner for new beard growth. For the established beard, just a dab will manage unruly strands. A perfect moisturizer for both your face and beard.

Also, the Bluebeards Beard Wash is good as well.

I love this Robert Jones' color theory tutorial video. It explains a bit about what lip colors you want depending on what you're trying to do enhance/downplay whatever features as well as an overview of color theory as a whole :) I think it's good to have an idea of how color theory works even if you don't want to follow it.

Since you're just exploring with lip colors right now I would suggest getting a set of lip pencils such as this one because the pencils can be used all over the lips (not just as a liner!) and in my opinion are the easiest to work with. Lisa Eldridge also has an amazing tutorial that deals with how to work with lip liners.

What I do when using lip liner since my lips are dry is I put a tiny coat of vaseline before doing the lip liners so it's like making a custom lip balm. You can mix lip liners that way too for a really wide variety of colors. :)

Magic Fragrant Shaving Powder

Review on this product had great insight on how to use it...

That's not to say it doesn't work at all. Just that it doesn't work nearly as well on coarse hairs that it does on fine hairs. In other words, if you're wanting this for your back, legs, arms...you'll be largely amazed at how well it takes off hair. You're unlikely to be impressed with groin, face, etc. where the hairs may be more coarse.

For my case, I bought it for my face. There, it took three treatments before I saw even the slightest hint of smooth, hairless skin. Even then, it still left stubble on the neck and under my jaw. Comparing this with a safety razor where I could get these hairs quite easily, this was a bit depressing. What it did do a good job of was minimizing razor bumps and ingrown hairs.

A lot has been made of the mixing strategy. Yes, it's pain. But that's because the instructions are faulty. If you mix the way it tells you on the can, not only will you be stirring forever, you'll end up with a very slimy, very inefficient solution that will make you think you got scammed. I'm going to help you.

You need:

  • A mixing cup. You can use any cup, or you can get official and get something like Edwin Jagger Porcelain Shaving Soap Bowl With Handle, Black

  • A spoon. Or something else to stir with. I prefer a spoon but it's up to you.

  • A shaving brush. You can use your hand, but I strongly recommend against it. Just get a shaving brush. Like Escali 100% Pure Badger Shaving Brush

  • A large towel - you'll use both ends. Or if you're not into messing towels up, consider something like Kleenex Hand Towels Everyday, 60 Count where you can throw them away when done.

  • A preshave balm or lotion, or oil. You want something that is NOT alcohol based. Something like John Allan's Slick Water Lotion, 2 Ounce

  • Something to tame the skin afterwards. Something like Proraso Aftershave Lotion, Refresh, 100 ml

Mind you, the above are just recommendations. Choose whatever products you want, just make sure they are comparable to the above. Or don't use them, but be prepared to be frustrated with your results.

First, to give you a sense of scale and scope. A heaping teaspoon is enough for a grown man's entire face. If you're doing legs, arms, chest, etc, bump it up to two teaspoons. This is just to have enough when you're done mixing. Next, your water ratio should be just enough to end up with a consistency between pancake mix and cake batter; not runny, but not overly thick. You'll know it when you see it. Imagine perfectly made oatmeal "stick to the ribs" style. That's what you want. So if you have a heaping teaspoon of powder, put maybe a barely full teaspoon of cool water in. Then stir slowly using the spoon (or whatever). It will look like it's not mixing; it is. It just takes a while.

Here's the hint: you'll know when you're almost done because you'll get hit in the face with a smell that I can't describe, but you'll know it for what it is. If you've ever used NAIR, or any similar depilatory, it's the exact same smell. Once that smell hits you, you'll notice the mixture getting thicker and it'll all make sense (finally). Usually takes me about 2 minutes end-to-end. If you end up with a consistency that seems watery, use a flat edge (i.e. a knife or something) and add a bit more powder, then continue to stir. Conversely if it feels way too thick (like paste), add a half teaspoon of water and continue stirring. After you do it once, you'll get the hang of it.

Second, DO NOT do this after a shower or after washing your skin. It should probably be the first thing you do after getting up on the days you do it (which is every other day, NOT once a day). Why? You want your skin to be oily, to have some coating to protect it, in addition to the preshave. This is how you can get the best result without burning sensation. So don't wait until after showering to do this.

Now, prep your location. By prep, I mean use the preshave, something that is designed to protect your skin from burn and irritation. DO not use regular lotion, it won't do anything.

Now, it's important to note that this, when mixed, is essentially a plaster. It will go on wet and then dry, just like a cast. That's okay. But be prepared for it to "flake" everywhere. Try not to move too much. You don't want to make a mess.

Apply using the shave brush as if you were applying shaving cream or foam. But go in strokes against the grain. The goal is to lift the follicles and help the mixture do its thing. Make sure you get good coverage. You'll notice that the bottom of the mixture looks dry; that's okay. It'll still apply like a plaster. But feel free to drip a bit of water in there if you're not sure.

You'll need to wait between 7 and 10 minutes (depending on skin sensitivity) for the mix to work. During this time, clean out your mug and shave brush. The mixture should rinse rather cleanly in cold water, but the brush will take some hands-on help (it's safe). Depending on how long it stays on you may or may not feel a tingle. That's a good sign. It should not burn.

After the time has passed, this is where people get confused. You can use a dull pseudo razor (like Pseudo Shaver), if you want, but I found much better results just using a warm, damp towel. You can warm up the water while waiting for the mixture to dry, and if you use the disposables, have one that is your warm water towel and one that is your dry towel. Or you can use a single towel that serves both functions. Wipe the mixture off in firm, slow strokes against the grain. Then clean the towel off and go back over the area vigorously to get the remainder. Dry off with the other towel. Finish up with the aftershave.

If you did everything I noted above, you should see amazing results, with certain exceptions (I could never get the mixture to work at all above my mustache, it did 97% of the job in the groin area, and 99% of the work under my jaw). Figure 15 minutes total time to do. But again, you only need to do this once every other day minimum. My arms have been smooth for three days.
u/hescrepuscular · 2 pointsr/askgaybros

Learn it. Use it. Love it. Also those bumps can be reduced after shaving by using an after-shave balm with vitamin D and putting an antiperspirant on the area. Razor bumps down there are tricky because the skin gets sweaty and rubs against your underwear and other skin, causing more irritation. You shouldn't shave there in the first place.

I've used Magic Gold Powder a number of times and it works amazing. No razor burn. No getting yer balls caught in the trimmer. This stuff is awesome.

Mix it up. Apply it all over. Wait 7 or 8 minutes and then wipe it off with a facecloth. Baby smooth.

u/Kelethe · 2 pointsr/sex

This stuff is the best for shaving balls/butts/anywhere else it's hard to get a razor. You just mix it up with water and leave the paste on ~7 minutes. It's like nair but won't give you third degree chemical burns.

u/jglyum · 2 pointsr/TheGirlSurvivalGuide

I've tried a few different things, and I epilate now. It definitely hurts more the first few times, but it gets a lot easier as time goes on. (Hair grows in a little thinner, doesn't hurt as much, etc.). Just look at skincare tips for exfoliating, moisturizing, etc., which people recommend whether you shave or epilate. I feel, in terms of pain, if you can wax, then you can epilate. One caveat with epilating - it's not the cleanest method, and you'll want to epilate more than you thought when you start, due to the hair regrowth cycle (they all don't come in at the same time).

I wanted to mention another option since you tried hair removal cream. I liked it, but ended up going with epilation because mixing this stuff up and using it while on a business trip is a little annoying.
Soft-sheen Carson magic shaving powder This is gentle hair removal. You mix some powder in a bowl with water to form a paste, put it on your legs, then wait a while and wash it away. It's never hurt, and it worked really well. I just had a couple friends who would ask me why I had a bowl and a spoon sitting in the bathroom. One friend started contemplating eating ice cream while in the bathroom, but that's off-topic.
Anyway, depending on how sensitive to pain you are, you may want to try this stuff. I just looked it up on Amazon and it was like $2 ($5 with shipping). I can't remember why, but back when I researched this one, everyone said the yellow can of powder worked better than the white one; that's the one I used, and I thought it was great.
http://www.amazon.com/health-personal-care/dp/B0048ZIFA0

I wanted to add one last thing. I still have a back-up razor that I have used very rarely (maybe once in the past couple years), because I wanted every last hair gone. The epilator takes longer, and does not work as cleanly. Also, the epilator I got was shower friendly, which is when I typically use mine. But it doesn't have a travel-safety switch, which basically makes sure you can't turn it on when it's in your suitcase. I've found that annoying, because I'll pack it for a trip, and get to a destination, and then need to plug it in to charge right away, because it accidentally turned on at some point.

I'm not sure if this would help at all in SA, but I would see if I have any friends whose parents are lawyers and ask them to draw up a cease and desist letter to the school board. The threat of litigation is often enough to alter behavior.

If that is not an option, you might give Magic Shaving Powder a try. A black friend recommended it to my white husband who is very sensitive to shaving - apparently, it is a more common problem in the black community for some reason. It has helped.

u/jZampage · 2 pointsr/AdviceAnimals

Use magic shave, trust me. Look it up on Amazon. I use the one in the yellow canister. It is by far the best hair removal product I have ever used for body hair (esp. pubic region).

I've recommended to friends, family, exes, everyone who has used it maintains it to this day.

It's made for "black person" facial hair but it works so effectively at body hair I would never use anything else. Note: am white guy.

Here is a link:

https://www.amazon.com/Magic-Fragrant-Shaving-Powder-Gold/dp/B0048ZIFA0/ref=sr_1_3_a_it?ie=UTF8&qid=1480553404&sr=8-3&keywords=magic+shave

One canister will last you a good while, and it's only like $5.00

Also worth noting that you will stay smooth for a couple weeks before needing another use, generally.

Just make sure you follow the directions carefully. I keep it applied for about 7 minutes and then take a shower and rub everything off with a wash cloth. Never had a problem, never burns anything, smells like a barber shop, zero complaints. Biggest problem is having something to mix it in, I just use a small tupperware container with a lid and shake it up with water now, seems to work best for me. A mason jar would work but it would be hard to get the residue off the sides if you're being stingy with the product.

Good luck. And you're welcome.

u/darksideofmidnight · 2 pointsr/crossdressing

There was a post in /r/bestof today from /r/everymanshouldknow about how to shave your nether regions. I can't remember the name of it but there's paste that he uses that's like Nair but much, much more gentle that I believe grabs the hair out by the roots. I will see if I can find it for you and edit this later. He said it lasts for a few days/up to a week I think. I have no idea if it will help, but if so it'd be rad to help you out.

Edit: Wow that was easier than I thought, hahaha. Magic Gold Shaving Powder now, you should really read his original comment here on how to use it. Skip down to the section labeled Depilatory Creams in his comment. Step by step on how to and what to expect.

u/mamobus · 2 pointsr/SkincareAddicts

My recommendation is bleaching or Magic Shave.

Magic shave is a depilatory but it's nowhere near as harsh as Nair. I can't use Nair but I love this stuff and I use it ahem... "downstairs." Check the reviews of course before you try it, but I got mine for $3.50 after reading a bunch of positive stuff about it from /r/wicked_edge (which you should maybe crosspost to if you don't find sufficient answers here).

u/ammobandanna · 2 pointsr/tifu

Try using this:

http://smile.amazon.com/gp/product/B0048ZIFA0/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o09_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

Warning: do a test patch first, wait a few days, then try it for real. It's cheap, it works ridiculously well, but it will burn the crap out of your skin if you leave it on too long or use it too often.

This stuff will solve all your beard management problems. Honest Amish Beard Balm Leave-in Conditioner

When I first heard of this stuff, I was unsure how it was going to work and hesitant to take the leap and make the purchase, but I'm glad I did.

Here's what you do.

You take a dab of this stuff, rub it between your hands till it turns into an oil like substance, and apply it to a damp beard (I usually use it after I shower). Now, massage it into your beard, then take the time to get yourself styled to your liking.

After all that, Your application site is going to feel a little oily/greasy for about 30-45min till it's absorbed, but once it is absorbed. Your beard should hold its shape. If it doesn't, they also offer a more aggressive option.

Later on down the road, your beard will be trained to the point that you wont need to apply the stuff as often.

I had this exact same problem, where my skin would get super dry whenever I grew my beard out for more than a couple of weeks. Beardruff like you wouldn't believe. So i usually would keep it pretty trimmed, that seemed to help. But about 2 months ago I decided I would give it a full-effort try. Same issue, super dry skin. Using dandruff shampoo on it kept the beardruff down but the skin was still really dry and itchy. I was about to trim it down again but then some random post brought me to /r/beards and I did some reading here. I decided to try some beard-specific products and a good brush. I ended up with Honest Amish beard balm (https://www.amazon.com/dp/B009NNFB0O/ref=cm_sw_r_awd_r3ewub1EERK6S) and a generic boars-hair brush (https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0041TBQUO/ref=cm_sw_r_awd_44ewub06YA7PZ) and my beard has never been better. Beardruff? Gone! Itchiness? Gone! I give my beard a good rinse every shower and wash it with shampoo two or three times a week and then brush this stuff in afterwards and its never felt better. Seriously, worth every penny.

Don't exfoliate your beard, but get a separate beard wash to use in the shower, I use Professor Fuzzworthy's shampoo bar (https://www.amazon.com/Professor-Fuzzworthys-SHAMPOO-Tasmania-Australia/dp/B00HBSC3JA/ref=sr_1_1_s_it?s=beauty&ie=UTF8&qid=1481837005&sr=1-1&keywords=professor+fuzzworthy). I put on balm, I use Honest Amish (https://www.amazon.com/Honest-Amish-Beard-Balm-Conditioner/dp/B009NNFB0O/ref=sr_1_4_s_it?s=beauty&ie=UTF8&qid=1481837062&sr=1-4&keywords=Honest+Amish) fresh from the shower while still wet. I let that dry and then after it dries, when I brush my teeth I re-wet my beard and add beard oil (https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00TSCMVLC/ref=s9_acsd_al_bw_c_x_1_w). Rub them all into your beard and skin underneath. It will condition and soften your beard and your skin.

You can experiment with different products to find what you like, but these are the ones I've found work well for me.

u/CasualSuperHero90 · 2 pointsr/beards

Ok I was in the same situation. Work doesn't care about the beard, but I want to maintain a professional approach to work. So I heeded the advice of /r/beards awhile ago. Here's what I'll recommend:

Step 1 : Oil and/or Leave in conditioner

My current favorite http://www.amazon.com/DUCKBUTTER-Duck-Butter-Beard-Oil/dp/B00YZ5UWSQ/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1449214132&sr=8-1&keywords=beard+oil+pack

On the days I shampoo and condition my beard I dont use the leave in. Other days I use the leave in. Oil everyday.

Step 2: Brush

http://www.amazon.com/Zeus-Bristle-Pocket-Beard-Brush/dp/B00LV31TVY/ref=sr_1_7?ie=UTF8&qid=1449214502&sr=8-7&keywords=boars++hair+brush

Pick up a boars hair brush and get the product from step 1 deep in there.

Step 3: Paste

Current personal favorite:
http://www.amazon.com/Garnier-Fructis-Style-Clean-Finishing/dp/B0050N4DLO/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1449214605&sr=8-1&keywords=garnier+paste

This process leaves my beard straight and soft. I still have to deal with the odd hair sticking out, but it looks more professional.

u/Vicktaru · 2 pointsr/malegrooming

When I shower I start off by applying argan oil conditioner to my beard (can be found at any major grocery or convenience store) and leave it on for my entire shower. After I'm done showering I add a little leave in conditioner as well and my beard is strong, shiny and soft.

u/lonestarfisherman · 2 pointsr/beards

I use a boar hair brush with a little beard balm on it. When showering, make sure you don't use any harsh soaps/shampoos that will dry out your beard.

u/buhlot · 2 pointsr/malehairadvice

Looking good, brother! When I finally fully shaved my head, it was a truly liberating experience.

Don't use a Bic, pick one of these up as well as some Proraso shaving cream. If you want, you can also pick up an exfoliating scrub as a pre-shave.

I shave my head in the shower and go by feel; I don't need a mirror until after when I touch up my sideburns to make it even. Using warm/hot water, I get my head wet and scrub with my hands, then use the exfoliator and scrub the oils/dead skin off. Rinse. (The wicked_edge subreddit users may wanna look away here) Use about a nickel-size dollop of Proraso on my left hand and lather it up on my head real well. I keep the lather on my left hand and with my right hand, start shaving with the grain. After that first pass, I add a little more water to my lathered hand and lather my head again for the second pass WITH the grain. This is where I go by feel; I use my left hand to feel and my right hand to shave until smooth all around.

Once I feel that I've gotten everything, I rinse off and use a beard shampoo to help get all those shaved bits outta my beard; they tend to cling onto the beard oils otherwise and I just use a bit of extra beard balm to keep it hydrated.

So yea, you may or may not need a 3rd pass since it'd be your first time shaving like this but I've been shaving this way for the past 4-5 years and I rarely need to anymore.

u/Puttzdog · 2 pointsr/beards

Since we're talking about beard balms/oils. Give this a try, it's got a sandalwood-ish smell (some say licorice but i don't get that too much) and does wonders. I use this brush to work in the conditioner and get compliments on the feel of my beard and it removes flaky skin.

I will say OP has a nice setup, I'm just sharing what I use and like.

u/Used_Taco · 2 pointsr/beards

I like this salve.

I make my own beard oil. It was like $30 to buy all the ingredients initially, but the expensive oils last forever. It works pretty good for beardruff.
1oz apricot kernal oil
1 oz jojoba oil
5 drops castor oil
5 drops cedar wood oil
5 drops tea tree oil

I have this comb for when I'm away from the house and this one for home.
I also use this brush for styling it.

Not all of that is necessary but I'd recommend a comb and beard oil at least.

I had a similar issue when I started dating a guy with a beard, mine was due to irritation from the rough ends of the hair rubbing my chin. He ended up buying a beard oil^(at my gentle suggestion), and when he uses that consistently I don't have as much of an issue! He bought this one, which is just a mixture of jojoba and argan oil, both ingredients that my skin doesn't mind. If your irritation continues, I would suggest giving it a try :)

I’ve started using this beard oil to help shape it and alleviate some dry skin issues I’ve had. I got this beard comb/brush set to help try to keep it somewhat tame.

I’ve only started recently trying to grow it out longer so still a work in progress! I have a Wahl trimmer I use to get any crazy hairs that don’t want to cooperate hah

My beard is very thick and sponge-like. It tamed it just a little bit and made it less scratchy. Also gives it a little bit of a shine.

u/Teriks · 2 pointsr/beards

I use this: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00IB6IAOS/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o09_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

Seems to be one of the cheaper and good-working oils. Just need a few drops and run it through the beard to the skin, then use a beard brush and comb it all in.

Argan oil is popular along with Jojoba. There's a few others, but those are the main two.

u/Treypyro · 2 pointsr/beards

I personally use this beard comb and brush and Honest Amish Beard Oil. I really like the way Honest Amish products smell.

When I first started growing my beard I watched the Beard Baron on YouTube. He's got some great videos on how to take care of your beard.

u/rabbifuente · 2 pointsr/Judaism

It wouldn't hurt, but may not be worth it to be honest. My beard is somewhat thick and wirey, but I keep it relatively short and I didn't use beard oil for a while because I thought it was gimmicky. I tried it eventually and while I don't think it really softened it up a ton it did help a little and I don't get "beard itch" anymore. If you find that your face itches under your beard then yes I'd say try it, if not then don't worry about it. This is what I use, it's not too expensive (some oils get stupid expensive) and lasts a while so if you're interested you can always get some and give it a try. All you do is put a dime size amount in your hands and massage into your beard and skin after you shower and you're good to go (I'll usually comb it through just get it distributed evenly as well).

u/anonmarmot · 2 pointsr/NHLHUT

> I hear beard oil is a wonderful thing..have you ever tried it?

I was getting by alright with just like conditioner and some face lotion. I tried oil for a day or two and it's way better. Yeah, just get some. I got this stuff

Try biotin or just in general vitamins that aid beard and/or nail growth. Products that specifically say they target beard growth are usually rather expensive. You could just look at the ingredients and get the vitamins seperately which is cheaper.

I'm myself taking biotin supplements and am seeing some good results. Hair grows thicker and quicker and I use the simple cheap stuff from my drug store.

Except once you get decent beard growth, if not sooner, you'll regret using head shampoo on your face. Regular shampoos are meant to strip all the oil/"grease" out of your hair, but beards actually need those natural oils to keep you from itching your face off, and to keep the hair healthy. As someone who's done Minoxidil (on my way out now, for the most part), I can tell you that just the Minox. is enough, and you'll thank me later for buying a beard shampoo, with some oils in it, when your face doesn't feel like you wore socks to bed (in other words: sore). Most of those hair-thickening shampoos are snake oil, anyway, and they're mostly meant to keep the hair (on your head) that you already have nice and healthy—they won't grow new hair or actually thicken up transitional hairs, as they're just meant to keep your hair from being all nasty and dead, split ends, etc.

If you're interested in recommendations, I've been using some beard shampoo by Grave Before Shave, which has Argan oil, but there are plenty of others out there if it's not quite what you're looking for.

I only recently started to grow my beard out so moisturizing is pretty new to me. I use Loreal Barber club beard and face moisturizer. I haven't used it long enough to give a review or comparison to other products but so far it's been great, smells amazing and seems to do the job well. For oils I'm using two by Proraso and Pashana which also help out a lot.

Again like I said I'm new to this so there might be better products out there but these are working for me quite well.

Having just gone though this with mine, it does go a way a little with length. what i did was grow it out really long and then trim just the sides down. The best thing i found was beard wax and then pulling it down though out the day. Also watch how much you shampoo it.

I found a bottle of Aveda Botanical Kinetics Lotion in the cupbord. My wife didn't like the stuff I guess. Anyways, since growing my beard my face has been itching like crazy and was about to order some Tasmanian beard conditioner or Bluebeards Beard Saver. Well this Aveda works very well. It has a light scent and doesn't leave any residue after applying it. My face is now itch free and my beard is soft. So when you're shopping around for something new, and don't mind spending a bit more, give the Aveda a try.

Also, for a rejuvenating experience try this aveda product. It's the bee's knees for adding a new element into the grooming ritual.

I never used a moisturizer. I had acne before I grew a beard and I used an acne cream for that, but my acne issues disappeared when the beard came along. u/andhelostthem · 1 pointr/minimalism

A couple things I recommend after having similar issues back in the day. Dandruff is from the calcium build up causing dryness. So you need to do three things: soften your water, moisturize your hair/scalp and stay hydrated.

  • Get a shower head or filter that softens your water and removes calcium. There are a lot of options from $30-$100 out there. If you want to test this before making the investment get a few gallon jugs of water from the grocery store and when you shower use those on your hair instead of tap water.
  • Moisturize your scalp/head. Once a week use oil (conconut, tea tree or olive oil all work), moisturizing conditioner and then leave in conditioner. If you have beardruff I also recommend this.
  • Stay hydrated. Drink a lot of water during the day. More than you're drinking now. Get a 32 oz nalgene and drink the entire thing twice a day. You need to fight it from the inside as well as the outside.

Honestly combating this issue is not a minimalist thing. You need to fight it on multiple fronts and to try a handful of products that will clutter your bathroom cabinet until you find a balance that works.

I'll add to this, especially for the Afro-Americans out there.

Shavers...

After all of the cordless electric shavers I've used over the years, my Remington F5-5800 Foil Shaver gives me the smoothness shave I've ever had without using an actual razor. I finish off by edging up and trimming with a [Philips Norelco G370] (https://www.amazon.com/dp/B000FED5DU/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_F702AbWT46ATE) (it was <$100 and it's probably outdated by now) I've used it for ~4-7 years and dropped it a few times. It leaves the skin a bit rough, though, but I've rarely ever nicked myself with it (if at all).

Instructions & Maintenance...

Read the instructions and follow proper maintenance (brush, clean, oil, etc.). Always.
And for the record, both of my shavers are easy to clean. The Remington requires more effort, especially once a month, but the Phillips only requires a quick brushing (I add Andis Clippers Clipper Oil). The "hardest" part is letting the Remington dry for so long before putting the head back on. Don't brush the clippers while it's on, btw. Seriously, you'll ruin the brush and end up needing to replace it.

Battery Life...

If the instructions say to let the battery die before its first charge, I do so. If it says to fully charge it for X hours before its first use, I do so. Now, people of Reddit had a particular conversation about battery life once. I never looked into the matter myself, but I started practicing it with all of my chargeable devices. After the initial required drain (if instructed), I always charge it after it hits 30-50%. I do my best to never let it drain completely to 0%. The idea is that the battery will actually degrade much quicker if it drains to 0% and will need to be replaced sooner. Feel free to call me a fool on this one, but please explain your reasoning.

Razers & Magic Shave...

This one requires a story or warning.
I wet shaved with my brother's razor when I was in high school because my cordless one (probably a Phillips) wouldn't work properly when I put it back together after taking the top apart for a full-ish cleaning for the first and last time (the school started reinforcing its facial hair policy).

Though it was my first time, and I shaved against the grain, I didn't cut myself or apply anything to my skin before or after. My face was so smooth that I kept touching it. Three days later, I start noticing bumps. By the fifth day, I had full on razor bumps everywhere I originally shaved. Bump Stopper II took a month or so to really any progress and around three months to really make an impact, but it left my skin dry and very flaky. Eventually, I moved to Skin Tight Razor Bump Ointment Extra Strength. It burned like hell in the beginning, but showed better progress. That and washing my face daily with soap and a towel of course.

Since I still had to shave, I just went over the bumps with a shaver and routinely wiped the blood away. Due to a barber's suggestion, I started using Bump Fighter Razors. He warned me that they were going to miss some hairs, but it worked well enough.

At some point, I was recommended (powder blue) Magic Shave because it would "eat those bumps up" (oh, boy). This stuff stinks, flakes all over the place, and can tear up your skin if you aren't careful. I tore a descent sized section of my skin off when I dragged a wet towel down my chin at the wrong angle once. I could see the skin sitting intact in the towel with the inner-end of my hairs barely sticking out of it. Was a really weird moment. That section of my face was pink and hairless for awhile before it healed over. Looked funny on my lovely complexion. For the record, I only used it every three or four days. Three is the minimum, IIRC.

If you're going to use Magic Shave, use a wet towel to wipe it off (prepare to rinse repeatedly), designate a magic shave cup that is to be used for nothing else, consider only wearing boxers, bring a broom and dust pan, and stay in one room or outside. Hell, turn the vent on, you stinky mutt. Overall, I do not recommend Magic Shave's original formula (powder blue). I cannot speak for its powder gold fragrant or creme light fresh scent version, though.

Now for razers...
I started using the cheap pack of (dark blue) Gillette dual-blade razers from Walmart in high school. They worked very well. Here are my instructions: Shave with the grain, rinse the blades after every stroke, thoroughly rinse the blades after you're done, wipe them carefully with a toilet paper to get extra crud off, and let air dry somewhere. Hell, thanks to another Reddit conversation, I kept a short round plastic container of isopropyl alcohol around in college to "shake" the razer in as a finishing touch of cleanliness. Supposedly, the alcohol evaporates after awhile, so I just let it air dry after that (read the 4/24/18 edit at the bottom). The blades lasted a pretty long time doing all of this before I need to pull out a new razor. That combined with how cheap they were...

Razer Bumps / Ingrown Hairs...

I found that daily shaving, Skin Tight creme, and actually washing or just wiping my face with a clean damp paper towel kept the bumps from fully returning. A trick I discovered to get rid of the ones that lingered was to grow my facial hair out. It looked awful for a month since the bumps returned as the hair grew (they might have been curling into the skin), but there's a point where the bumps start to recede into the skin and all you have is a full beard (minus some areas of the lower neck). Now just maintain it or shave it off. What you'll find is a smooth face with practically no bumps. You must keep the hairs from growing back, though (and maybe wash your face?). Mess that up, and the lingering bumps will return.

Oh, to hell with Bump Stopper II and don't bother with Skin Tight. My physician recommended Tend Skin Solution after I graduated college, and, let me tell you, it works better than both. I hear the ingredients aren't that bad for your health either.

My Routine...

I wash my hair (including facial) with Bubble & Bee's hard water shampoo (the price is worth it, especially since it lasts for a surprisingly long time), pour on and rub in their vinegar rinse ratio (a fourth of the bottle tops; it's optional when you purchase the shampoo), wash that out, apply Nature's Way Organic Extra Virgin Coconut Oil to my facial and scalp hair while still damp/wet (I'm not 100% certain about using it on the scalp yet; used to use AVEDA Dry Remedy Daily Moisturizing Oil twice or thrice a week), brush my facial hair (soft bristles for the cheeks and neck; medium bristles for the beard and moustache) once in the morning, and apply Tend Skin Solution twice a day with cotton balls.

I should be using the foil shaver daily, but I don't always. Hence why I brush my cheeks and neck.

In closing...

If you're close to (or cool with) any Afro-American males, especially ones who've just started growing facial hair, consider having them read this so they can learn from my mistakes. Those razor bumps were rather unsightly.

tl;dr: Use Tend Skin Solution for razor bumps, wash your face, follow instructions, foil shavers leave smoother skin, read the section on battery life, don't shave against the grain with a razor, and don't use magic shave or bump stopper II.

EDIT (4/24/18):
About my shaving cleanup steps. I later realized that letting the isopropyl alcohol dry on the razer caused the blades to dull quicker, so I started rinsing them off and wiping them with toilet paper a second time as the final step.

I mean, if someone is serious about beating drug tests, there are more methods of accomplishing that than a lab can really account for. And the number of tests that would need to be done, even with this sample population? The article itself says:

I found it on Amazon for $15 for 4 oz. I'm sure there are better ones out there, but this is bargain compared to the rest. Maybe you'll find something you like more eventually, but Bay Lime is not a bad place to start. Frankly, I'm tempted to put it on about 5x a day because it smells and feels so good, but I only do it once in the morning after showering.

What do you wash your beard with? And how often? It could be an infected hair follicle from maybe working out and not showering immediately after ( I have had this happen since I will plan errands after my workout since I'm already out). Typical treatment would be an antimicrobial shampoo to help if there is alot and it's bothersome.

Is this the first time you have seen this? Are there more than these two?

The best advice I could give right now is keep ur hygiene up and regular, and look into beard care products like oils that also provide benefit for the skin underneath.

I have this problem, too, and have had pretty good luck with an alternating combo of leave-in conditioner/beard oil. Also helps with split ends quite a bit. You can find something really cheap at Walmart like Garnier Fructis (though it does smell a bit fruity) or something higher end like Honest Amish.

u/Cowboy_moto · 1 pointr/TheVeneration

For my beard I have been using this great beard conditioner. Smells a little like black licorice, with a woodsy undertone maybe a hint of leather. I love it my wife loves it my beard loves it. Win win win.

For shaping my stache I use this mustache wax. Works Geary has a little sweeter smile like coconut. Great for the rakish look with your mustache twirled at the end.

I’m not super experienced in the beard area, as I’m growing my facial hair for the first time, currently 5 weeks in. I just received Honest Amish beard oil and balm/leave in conditioner yesterday and love them so far. The smell is like black liquorish and it leaves me feeling soft.

After my beard got past a couple inches it really started poofing out and needing some attention. So I started using a leave in beard conditioner (which is essentially a bunch of fancy oils) and some beeswax for the mustache, its really improved my beard.

Good stuff

u/snarkyrocko · 1 pointr/beards

Mine is fairly curly as well. After a shower, I towel dry it, rub some balm in and then comb/shape it. The balm helps straighten it a bit.

This is what I use:

Look into beard conditioner. I use this.

I would try this. link

Honest Amish Beard Balm Leave-in Conditioner - All Natural -Vegan Friendly Organic Oils and Butters

It's worked pretty well so far. My only complaint is that it's fairly greasy, but it's entirely possible I'm just using too much.

u/chancrescolex · 1 pointr/beards

Beard balm and a nice 100% boar bristle brush. Honest Amish is the first I've tried, but I love it so far.

u/sethlfod · 1 pointr/goodyearwelt
u/twyphoon · 1 pointr/beards

Disclaimer: My hair is pretty dry, so I doubt you'll moisturize as much as I do, but you can at least check out some of the products I use.

I actually just got some Stubble 'n Stache Moisturizer/Conditioner that really makes the hair feel a lot softer, and the skin beneath it feel great. I'll say I was pleasantly surprised by this one, and would really recommend it. I usually put this on in the mornings before i head out the door.

Midday if i need it, I'll take a pea-sized amount of Honest Amish Conditioner and work it in.

Before bed, I'll usually just work in whatever I'm using in my head hair, which is just a mix of some coconut oil, tea tree oil and argan oil.

Careful not to use too much of any of these guys, because you'll quickly go from curly and coarse to oily and sticky.

u/Brendarrrr · 1 pointr/beards

I've been using this. I'm not really sure how I feel about it yet

u/mlee0000 · 1 pointr/beards

I've only had the beard for some number of months now. I've been using "Honest Amish" brand. There might be better brands out there, but it got good reviews on Amazon and it has worked just fine for me.

It has a faint licorice scent.

I use a pea-sized dab of the balm and emulsify it in my palm, then work it through my beard when it is still slightly damp. Then just a tiny bit of the wax on the moustache, after warming it between the fingers. The tin is seriously like a lifetime supply.

The wax isn't a true mustache wax that hardens, but I find it suits my needs. Additionally, you could use it on the beard itself to tame any strays.

u/mikej90 · 1 pointr/mildlyinteresting

I use two of them, one of them is Honest Amish Beard Balm, i can't remember the name of other one I use since we recently redid the house and moved stuff around, but ill see if i can find it.

u/02139 · 1 pointr/BeardTalk

You should get an oil, wax, shampoo and a comb. I love the smell of this oil has a vanillay spicey smell that I love. This is a decent oil that doesn't smell like anything. If you wanna try a balm Amish Beard Balm is the one I use.

This and This are the two combs I have and use. Depending on what your mustache is might not need the smaller one. Scissors are nice to get rid of the crazy hairs.

Wax for me was the hardest to find a good one that didn't leave white stuff. Amish has one that I like and then I like This.

Any questions just ask!

u/Robby712 · 1 pointr/beards

The Heavy Duty provides a little extra hold and keeps the strays in check.

I also hit it with Tea Tree Oil after showers and that tends to keep mine from curling too much.

u/wonkinakilt · 1 pointr/beards

Not really what you asked for, but if you genuinely don't hate the beard and just wish it were less unkempt, I second Mabe's advice of getting him some beard care stuff. I'm a big fan of Honest Amish's conditioner - softens a bit and makes it a bit more manageable. Also, this comb is fantastic.

u/CookinWI · 1 pointr/beards

I got everything from Amazon.

Brush

Comb

Balm

As far as oil vs. balm, I use (or will be using) both. The oil I use everyday after I shower in the morning. This helps moisturize the hair and the skin underneath. The Balm, however, I will only be using when I wish to "clean up" my beard. I have thicker hair and a good portion of that hair doesn't really like to cooperate. So in my case, I'm using the balm as a styling product. It'll give a little weight to the hair and help reign in those finniky pieces.

Most people use some combination of both products, it just depends on the look you're going for. That being said, people with longer beards tend to use just oil unless going for a specific style because the weight of their beard is often enough to keep the hair growing in the same direction.

Does that answer your question? Do you have any more?

u/Nightshade118 · 1 pointr/beards

On a side note while It is turning out nicely my whiskers are wild and super curly, i'm using this beard oil but my beard still feels dry and scratchy at times. Any suggestions? I have well water at my house.

u/DoomTaru · 1 pointr/beards

i thought you meant a conditioner you use in the shower (which i would recommend.) Unfortunately, as others have said, your wife is right in this case... as both products you ordered i would consider after-shower brush-in products to help your beard be more manageable, and shiny. I too just ordered some beard products after reading this sub and getting inspired. I'm going on a yeard but my type of growth tends to be very curly/wirey and mostly grows in thickness as opposed to length. I'm hoping to "relax" it a bit with these new products. I would suggest finding a good shampoo/conditioner for the shower then choose either the conditioner or oil to brush in afterwards. here's what i ended up getting: bar shampoo for the shower, after-shower beard balm, and this brush i have a nice conditioner that my wife bought me for xmas that i use in the shower. any other suggestions i'm all ears

u/thekiltedpiper · 1 pointr/beards

I use this beard shampoo everyday :
http://www.amazon.com/Professor-Fuzzworthys-SHAMPOO-Tasmania-Australia/dp/B00HBSC3JA/ref=sr_1_2_a_it?ie=UTF8&qid=1463404909&sr=8-2&keywords=professor+fuzzworthy

Then hit it with some beard balm, has kept my beard nearly beardruff free. Some people say "dont wash your beard everyday", I say you gotta find what works best for your beard. Experiment!!!

u/SittingOnA_Cornflake · 1 pointr/beards

Thanks. Just one more question. Do you have experience with this shampoo?: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00HBSC3JA/?tag=aurma-20

It's in bar form which seems odd.

Actually, after researching it more, I like it a lot. It's uses all natural ingredients, and I can cut it up to fit in a soap dish.

u/Holovoid · 1 pointr/beards

My wife just bought me this beard oil and this beard shampoo for Christmas. I technically got it on the 21st, and have used it 3 times since then. Its already had a pretty positive effect on my fledgling beard. Made it a bit more shiny and a lot softer. Smells pretty good too.

The only issue I have is if you use too much of the oil it makes your beard smell a bit like movie theater popcorn (just oily smelling) but if you don't use too much its not bad.

u/KoA07 · 1 pointr/malefashionadvice

I had the same problem, but I got this stuff called Beard Balm and it has cleared up completely. Highly recommend! Make sure to massage it in to the skin underneath.

I couple that with with coal tar shampoo and conditioner maybe twice a week, and otherwise just rinse it with water in the shower.

Here's what I've been using: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00IB6IAOS/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apap_nviIvouqbwdm7

It's almost scentless, and this one bottle looks like it'll last me at least a year.

u/Customwise · 1 pointr/beards

I'm still learning as well. I bought my first beard oil at the Art of the Shave store at the mall. It worked well, but I feel that mall prices are usually higher than they need to be. I'm currently using this:

https://www.amazon.com/Fragrance-Conditioner-Moisturized-Leven-Rose/dp/B00IB6IAOS

I've been using it for a couple of weeks so far and I haven't had any dander issues yet.

The important thing to remember is that you should rub the oil in to your skin beneath your beard. I do that and then add my beard Balm before brushing everything to the way I like it.

u/randomkido · 1 pointr/shutupandtakemymoney

Jojoba oil is what you should use. There's a lot of other oils and things that are added to beard oil mixes, but that's the critical ingredient.

This one is my personal favourite

u/IndustrialJones · 1 pointr/OkCupid

This is the one I'm using - http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00IB6IAOS/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o07_s01?ie=UTF8&psc=1

I put about 6-7 drops in my palm, run my hands through on the underside of my beard going out and another 5 drops and I work that on the outside and massage it all in thoroughly. Then I comb it out and it's not oily or anything.

The main thing I like is that there's no fragrance. I have a sensitive nose when it comes to fragrant stuff.

u/thirteeners801 · 1 pointr/AskMen

I like Grave Before Shave Beard Oil. Comes in a few different scents, but this one is my personal favorite.

u/Ode2RoadRage · 1 pointr/beards

Honestly most oils are going to have the same effect.

That being said, that oil is pretty expensive.... $20 for 1oz??

I use Honest Amish -- $14 for 2oz.

u/Byahz · 1 pointr/malegrooming

Honest Amish makes a good product and it's reasonably priced. Can't recommend it enough. Amazon store link

u/Biwy2 · 1 pointr/BeardAdvice

You never know unless you try. You need to start stimulating your hair follicles to promote growth by applying oil and brushing gently. Every morning and every night: Wet you’re beard with warm, NOT HOT, water, pat dry until your face is slightly damp and Start using 3-4 drops of beard oil. Rub it into your hands and then gently massage the product into your beard. After the oil has been properly massaged into your skin and beard, lightly brush your beard downward with a boars hair beard brush (you can save the comb for when it’s longer) to stimulate your hair follicles and evenly apply the product. The amount of oil you use and the tools you use for your beard will change as it gets longer but these steps should be enough until your beard length reaches like 0.5 inches in length.

That guide is very helpful. I was just wondering if there are some brands that you guys typically recommend. Looks like I would need a mix a jojoba, argan, vitamin e and maybe some tea tree. This one looks alright but all the revues or based off free samples:

Before you trim, try getting some beard conditioner and combing it a little. Make it a little more kempt and see if he likes that.

This stuff has a nice smell and works pretty well. I put it in after a shower, and my beard isn't even as long as yours.

I bought the following:

Oil.

Brush.

Balm.

I like all three of those, though I think there surely are better brushes.

I didnt really mind the prices, some people here will say that you can make your own oils and balms or use plain coconut butter/oil.

Im not much of a handy DIY kinda guy, so a couple of bucks on beard care product wasnt a big deal to me.

u/fellasplendor · 0 pointsr/beards

Still not sure if I should using a special soap or not, or if the balm/oil combo covers it.

You may want to look at using different hair care products that doesn't strip your hair of natural oils.

I always got the worst razor burn down there, so went looking for a solution last year. Someone suggested this product and it is AMAZING. It is a lot like Nair, but it is designed for black men's beards. Nair always gave me a burning sensation, but this is so quick, painless, and effective. It is now the only thing I use. I have reordered it from amazon like 20 times. It totally sounds like I am some advertising rep, but I am a real person and I have recommended this product to a bunch of girlfriends.
