This is the link of the scale I got. It's fairly cheap. So far, I like it. You can customize the weight settings, goals, stuff like that. I also think it can interface with things like the Apple fitness and Samsung health. But I'm happy with it for the price and ease of use.

>decrease my BMI (for a more supple frame)

Oh gosh, please don't focus on BMI, it's just a terrible measurement, especially for this population.

BMI only considers body mass (kgs), and conveys nothing about body composition (e.g., % body fat & % lean mass).

As such, the same BMI value can represent many different body shapes, and many different states of metabolic health!

BMI has a place in epidemiology, but body composition is what individuals should focus on, and is easy to track these days. Healthy cis-females on average have significantly more body fat than their healthy cis-male counterparts, and progress in this area for MtF folks won't be reflected well by BMI.

A decent estimate for sure, I've got this one and enjoy using it, but I really believe getting this kind of analysis is worth the money if you're serious about it. I'm near the University of Minnesota and can get a test done for $40 (alumni) but I've see it at other local places here in the Twin Cities for $45.

u/truthlesshunter · 5 pointsr/Fitness

I use an eatsmart scale (specifically this one: http://www.amazon.com/EatSmart-Precision-Capacity-Recognition-Technology/dp/B004L6NTHU/ although the "body fat %, body measurement calculators" are to be taken with a grain of salt as they are seldomly very accurate but could be good for consistency measuring purposes). It's a great scale to track weight and I tried "fooling" it like you did (stepping on, stepping off, letting it reset, then stepping on again) and it always gave me the exact same reading...even if i waited like 5 minutes.

So personally, I can vouch for that one but reading the reviews on Amazon, any of the eatsmart scales (there are 3-4 of them..$50 being the most expensive) should be good.

I'll do you even one better. Below is the link to get it on Amazon. It's $28.97 and they've got $2 coupon right now.

Welp, I have been using my old sturdy and what I thought to be reliable analog scale to track my weight for the past few years but last week got a hankering to get a smart scale to track my body fat and bmi so I ordered this scale. It arrived yesterday and I just used it for the first time. If this scale is accurate, my analog scale was weighing me in significantly less. So I am up 6lbs since yesterday. At least I know where I'm really at now, in bright blue digital numbers...

The App I use is Fitindex. The Bluetooth scale ($20) is available on Amazon.

That looks sicknasty! I got this one when I was in college and love it. When it goes out I think I might follow in your footsteps :)

EDIT: Quick questions...could you post a link of where you actually purchased it? I don't see the option on the site you linked and the all-encompassing amazon.com doesn't carry it. Thanks!

My Omron Body Fat and Body Composition Monitor consistently reads ~12% +/-0.5% every single morning. I know these things aren't very accurate, but the fact that it's so consistent has almost convinced me.

u/blazedlawyer · 3 pointsr/keto

I'll never be at 8% body fat without taking steroids or testosterone replacement. As noted in my flair, I dropped 8% fat, 28% to 20%. That's why the title does not say, "Down TO 8% body fat." Hey!! We have like the same routine!! Minus the 24 hr fast.

I suggest this scale!!

FITINDEX Scale

It breaks down your body fat percentage, BMI, water weight, skeletal muscle, etc...

It is awesome! It feels good to see that just because lbs aren’t coming off it doesn’t mean I’m not losing in other ways!!

u/pmcanc123 · 3 pointsr/loseit

Thanks! I used the FITINDEX scale and app that I purchased from amazon.

It is not the most absolutely accurate but it is consistent with itself to track changes over time.

I also forgot on my how I did it is to weigh yourself daily in the morning after using the restroom. Get in the habit of doing this. It’s hard to see the scale go up 3-6 pounds some mornings but you get good trends and your weigh in day isn’t a fluke that is high or low.

u/hp3333 · 3 pointsr/loseit

May 8th I weighed 186.2lbs and stepped onto this scale below. Last year I reached my highest weight at 196 lbs. I'm getting married in September and decided that the most important thing is to be healthy inside and out regardless of my size. So I started tracking my habits and moods with the app Daylio. The scale and the app track your weight. I saw that one soda would consistently make me add 1 lb. or my depressed days I would binge eat and gain weight. I've switched to diet soda or sparkling water and had to listen to pod casts and other people's stories. I decided that it was a privilege to feel hunger and that I can't eat my negative feelings away. If I deal with them that very second my binge urge goes away. I've made my calorie intake reflect my activity amount and on Friday I weighed 176.6 lbs.

I found a dress that made me look past my insecurities because I look beautiful. I went in looking for something with sleeves because I wanted to hide my arms. I bought a v-neck, sleeveless dress and didn't even consider hiding any part of myself in that dress.

You will have all kinds of feelings through this process. My experience taught me that you don't have to do the standard weight loss practices or wear the standard dress. Everyone has their own personal journey and you can use other people's experiences to try new things and find what will work for you.

u/TellYouWheniKnow · 3 pointsr/loseit

There are lots of scales that can measure body composition. I just got this one from Amazon. It tells you how much your skeletal muscle weighs which is what tells you if your actually gaining or losing muscle.

This has good reviews and a great price but would love input from you folk. So does anyone have this scale and what do you think about it?

u/Tadpoles_Seem_Weird · 3 pointsr/loseit

The app is called FitIndex and works well with this scale from amazon. I purchased it and it has been very helpful. It syncs with apple health and all of the major apps like MFP.

u/BornOnFeb2nd · 3 pointsr/keto

One of the reasons I keep repeating..

MEASURE EVERYTHING

If you're relying on a single metric, you're not getting the whole picture of what's going on. :) I don't know if folks other than me can access it, but on MFP I measure various parts of my person, and plug in information from my scale and record it. Should have plenty of interesting data points to play with as time goes on.

u/Azdle · 3 pointsr/loseit

I just got that one's big brother: www.amazon.com/gp/product/B004L6NTHU/

It also seems to be very accurate. Over the past half hour I've had a 0.6lb drop. (after going to the bathroom)

u/blitzzo · 2 pointsr/TwoXChromosomes

I would suggest investing in a scale that is able to measure more than just your overall body weight since it's not a reliable metric to use. I like the yunmai scale: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B01ES5B024/ it's more expensive at about $50 but cheaper than the fitbit scale and much cheaper than they were just a year ago.

Obviously the goal everyone has is fat loss not just weight loss and when women start working out they tend to start building up long neglected muscles - especially if they have an office job and hobbies that really don't require them. It will also help fine tune your diet so that you're losing the right type of weight, when I do low carb I shed fat and water at unbelievable rates, when my girlfriend does low carb her body insists on gaining as much water weight as possible and she starts losing muscle but not fat.

u/mschepac · 2 pointsr/intermittentfasting

My old digital scale was that way. I bought a better one and it is exactly the same (down to the tenth) every time. This is the one that I got, about $25 on Amazon.

u/marylou5 · 2 pointsr/xxfitness

I have one of those scales that tells you body fat. It's an Omron scale, and it has a part at the top that you can pick up and hold while it does the body fat measurement. It also tells you muscle percent, visceral fat, etc. I think it's absolutely full of crap (inaccurate), but it is VERY precise. It always gives me the same measurement.

The reason I think it's full of crap is that it consistently says I'm over 40% body fat. I weigh about 145 at 5'4", so not thin, but not morbidly obese. And I do a lot of strength training so I have a pretty good amount of muscle. How can I be 40% body fat? Ugh. I hate that scale. But at least it's precise.

u/silencerider · 2 pointsr/keto

Sorry, I don't know about the Canadian shipping, but if you're going to buy a scale I would consider spending the extra money and getting this one -- http://www.amazon.com/EatSmart-Precision-Capacity-Recognition-Technology/dp/B004L6NTHU/ref=dp_cp_ob_hpc_title_3 I have it and it's great. It shows body fat % rather than just weight, so you can see when you are losing fat.

u/mizmalice · 2 pointsr/1200isplenty

You can do it manually with a caliper like this one: https://www.amazon.com/Accu-Measure-Fitness-Personal-Caliper-Measurement/dp/B000G7YW74

Or you can do it manually with your measurements, google "body fat percentage calculator" you'll need a tape measure.

Or electrically with a device.

Several options if you go this route: There is a handheld device like this one: https://www.amazon.com/Omron-HBF-306CN-Body-Fat-Analyzer/dp/B00A1ODX9A/ref=sr_1_5_s_it?s=hpc&ie=UTF8&qid=1524511317&sr=1-5&keywords=electronic+body+fat+measure

Or I have a smart scale that does it that I love:
https://www.amazon.com/Yunmai-Bluetooth-Smart-Scale-Monitor/dp/B01B8LEELA

u/rekarek · 2 pointsr/fatlogic

Something like this. But if you just search for "scale body fat" you'll get lots of results. Supposedly, the kind like the one I linked are better than just the floor scale type, because they send a current through the whole body since the hands are involved. YMMV.

u/funchords · 2 pointsr/loseit

None of this stuff is medical-grade testing. It uses impedance (electrical resistance) and mathematics to determine all of this. Note: electricity only runs the shortest distance.

For the scale you're considering. Draw a line on your body from the right foot, up the inside ankle, to your crotch, down to the other inside ankle, to the pads on the left foot. The wettest area of that approximate path is all that is being tested. Not your abdomen, back, chest, shoulders, neck or arms.

This is a better design: Omron Body Composition Monitor with Scale - https://smile.amazon.com/Omron-Body-Composition-Monitor-Scale/dp/B0020MMCDE

Because it's testing between four points, it's covering more of your body.

There's no cool app to go with it, but you can put this stuff in a spreadsheet (which I recommend) and use averages for trending because the body's hydration levels interfere with all of this and your data will be noisy. (True of the other scale, too.)

I use this scale: https://www.amazon.com/Omron-Body-Composition-Monitor-Scale/dp/B0020MMCDE/ref=sr_1_9_s_it?s=hpc&ie=UTF8&qid=1542575404&sr=1-9&keywords=body+fat+scale

I seem to see muscle mass increasing visually and feel strength increasing despite body fat fluctuating between 15.3 and 18.7%. It reads muscle mass as about 41%, but I don't know how it obtains that number and I've never seen any journals pay attention to muscle mass percentage. When I used it last night, body fat was 17.5 and BMI was 21.6.

Since my weight isn't increasing, I don't know how to explain that I'm getting stronger.

u/Britonay · 2 pointsr/intermittentfasting

I have an Abyon Bluetooth scale and I like it a lot. There’s an app you can use to track your weight loss, and it provides you with a lot of other information such as BMI, body fat percentage, body water, etc. (not sure how accurate it is, but I like it so far).

I've had this one for about 5 years, works really well. The most users we have had been 3 and it can recognize up to eight after you program in users. For my needs I am more interested in measuring bone/muscle and I think it tracks that well. It has held up well, the glass top still looks new, I never consider electronics bifl, but I have been pleased with this scale [I use rechargeable batteries].

u/Opspin · 2 pointsr/fasting

Great idea, please share all your results!

Get you a pair of body fat calipers if you haven’t already as this cheap device can pretty accurately measure the layer of fat between the skin and muscles on your stomach. Another slightly more difficult but possibly more precise way is if you have access to a ultrasound scanner. I’d love to see the change!

Also it’ll be interesting to see if you can pull through all 21 days without eating anything!

If you can’t, perhaps work in ADF instead and see the change from that?

I have no experience with the Nokia but it seems kind of mediocre for the price, I own this basic one while my parents own this one but if you want features I don't think you could go wrong with:

Yes, diet soda is fine. I drink multiple cans a day and look at my flair for my stats. I consume an Atkins coffee shake now and again but not regularly. For the scale, this is what I use. It's great because it shows body fat and muscle compositions (as well as BMI, water and bone).

u/fatfuckery · 2 pointsr/loseit

A little over your budget, but I absolutely LOVE my EatSmart Precision GetFit bathroom scale.

As for a food scale, I just bought whatever they had at Target for around $20.

u/changeyou · 2 pointsr/keto

This one.

I bought it because of the reviews and the price. I love it. I had an omron scale before that that measured body fat, muscle mass, and BMI (BMI is completely worthless in my opinion) but it was waayyy off on body fat percentage.

I think this one is a lot more accurate because I posted photos in a "Body Fat Friday" post on /r/fitness a while back (not sure if they still do those posts, I haven't seen them in a while) and people guessed my body fat percentage within 1-2% points of what my current scale says. :)

Oh also if you do get this scale pay attention to this part of the manual:
"To receive the most accurate weight measurement, please weigh yourself first thing when you get up in the morning" and "To receive the most accurate body fat, etc. measurement, please weigh yourself in the evening, before eating."

Your body fat / muscle mass percentage in the morning is not as accurate as your percentages in the afternoon/evening. :)

Also considering a scale. I cannot stand they weight fluctuations in the one I have at home (~10 lbs). Even if I stand up the same way every time, I am still finding very bad variations.

I want to get one with body comp capabilities so I can also track hydration and BF% more accurately (or consistently I guess). Considering this one from Amazon

u/bunnygn · 2 pointsr/90daysgoal

I have this scale. Love it, always been accurate, fast readings and lot of other info like body fat %, muscle %, etc.

I also use LoseIt.com on my iPhone for tracking everything I eat. It's free and even gives the option to track nutrients and I really like their graphs and charts.

u/gaya2081 · 2 pointsr/loseit

Yeah :( thats the bad side. I really love my EatSmart Precision GetFit Digital Body Fat Scale and its on sale with free shipping at amazon, but its $55...which is a great deal, but over your budget :( Maybe ask for it for christmas?

Also since you are doing keto (which I am also doing) it is an awesome way of making sure you are not losing muscle mass too quickly...I had to up my protein (thus my calories) because I felt I was losing muscle too quickly. Now my muscle is much more stable, but my fat loss is still moving along.

u/pandasaurusrex · 2 pointsr/loseit

I just got one of these based on a recommendation elsewhere on reddit:

http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B004L6NTHU

It's still in the mail, so I have no idea how much it'll rock, but I'm stupidly excited about getting a new scale.

u/czrabode · 2 pointsr/keto

It’s okay in accuracy. But I like it because it’s easy and you can check the trend. You can also check it regularly.

You can also get a DEXA scan or a Bodpod for an accurate measurement. You can then compare your fat analyzer’s reading to the Bodpod and see how far the readings are.

Gyms can also use calipers to make the measurement.

You can also get something like this which is more accurate because it combines the scale and handheld unit:

u/spicyramyun · 2 pointsr/Stronglifts5x5

If you goal is to manage weight whether it is adding or losing the one thing that must be done above all else:

MONITOR AND PLAN YOUR DIET.

This is so easily overlooked by so many people. You will here the standard calories in and calories out discussion everywhere. If you are looking to build muscle and lose fat you need to ensure you are eating enough protein to where your body can maintain it's repairs to your muscles while still running a deficit to lose fat.

This can definitely be done. You don't even have to be a master at it. I am multiple pants sizes and about 15 pounds. As I started lifting heavier the weight loss slowed. I only care about strength gains and physical size. I am losing fat because my gut etc is going down. I am not seeing that big of an adjustment on the scale because I am not killing myself in the process.

I bought this scale https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B004L6NTHU/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o03_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1 and it helps me keep track of body composition. Turns out it is on sale with a 20% coupon too if you are interested. I monitor my body comp a bit and try to maintain my diet while hitting my routine. You are putting up good numbers on those sets. You will continue to build that muscle up as long as you are feeding it. Just lower the calories to cut in the process.

u/LurkerPatrol · 2 pointsr/Brogress

Thanks fam, I greatly appreciate it!

My buddy, who is slightly shorter than me did the same route that I did from 230-ish to 180 (which is my end goal), and he ended up using this bluetooth scale and app called FIT-INDEX which he recommended to me and I'm using now.

The scale is here if you're interested: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B078HW8BPY/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_search_asin_title?ie=UTF8&psc=1

The convenient thing is that it connects with fitbit, myfitnesspal, and apple health, so I never have to touch those three apps and manually update my weight. I just pop on the scale and have it update all the platforms.

One thing to note, don't have your phone in your hand because it will throw the weight off. I weighed myself one day and found out I was 0.5 lbs heavier and got upset. Turned out my phone weighs 0.5 lbs.

u/thenamescash · 2 pointsr/90daysgoal

I was looking at consumer reports & amazon reviews and those really well ranked! But I'm leaning towards this one because it has slightly better reviews for BF% and their customer service reviews are stellar.

BF/body water are the 2 things I was trying to focus on bc I have a decent amount of muscle on me. I'm about 8 lbs heavier than 5 yrs ago but I'm wearing smaller sizes and measuring smaller inches (especially since beginning Crossfit about 9 months ago) - unfortunately most scales aren't readily capable of giving (accurate) reads of those :/

When I visited the doc in April I was 295. I knew I needed a change so I just watched what I ate and avoided night eating. Then back to the doc a month later I was 289.

After that I learned about IF in the beginning of this month and started checking it out. I went with the 16:8 method and this week started hitting the gym. Finally weighed myself and I was down a huge portion. I hit the gym twice a day before and after work with lots of cardio. 6-8 miles a day.

The app is called FITINDEX. It's for a scale I purchased on Amazon.

There are as many ways to lose weight as there are religions.

In my experience starting small and building your way up is a better way to make a lifestyle change (such as changing your diet from eating things which make you feel good to healthy foods) than just going cold turkey and relying on willpower to get you through it.

E.g. my story, I read The 4 Hour Body. I became determined for the first time in my life to lose weight. What did I do? I did what the author advised first. Make one simple change. Just change your breakfast. In my case I changed my breakfast to be slow carb compliant (no white carbs) and to have more protein.

Not only did this have physiological effects (blunting my insulin levels and reducing hunger pangs) but it also was easy to stick to, and I saw some tiny results in 2 weeks. From there I was motivated to change to the diet wholesale, to this day I stick with it unless I'm poor or going through a very stressful period.

So start small first, then incrementally change your behaviour. It's always advised to people who want to start running, for them to start taking a 5 minute walk. Before they know it they're walking for 30 minutes in a week, they buy running shoes in 2 weeks, and they're running in a month.

Additionally:

  • Take regular measurements. I suggest to measure bodyfat and diameter measurements instead of your weight. As fat is so light you'll barely see the difference on the scales. You can use callipers or a Bio-impedance device like this one. Use a tape measure like this one so your not dancing like a headless chicken. Measue your waist, around your biceps, around thighs. Add it up. Record it in a spreadsheet or a journal. Now notice that number come down after a while and use that to motivate you. What gets measured gets managed.

  • Get an accountability partner. Better yet raise the stakes so that not following your plan of diet will lead to financial loss or complete embarassment. They're groups online which all decide to lose weight or gain muscle and take horribly embarassing before photos. If they don't reach their goals, or not stick with the plan according to their partner, then those photos get posted to your facebook and twitter profiles. If that doesn't do it for you, promise to donate money to some evil organisation you detest, if your accountability partner sees you slide.

Good luck. Losing weight is a lifestyle change. And it's a lifestyle change you won't regret. Soon you'll be wondering how the heck you could enjoy that sweet snack everyday as opposed to just your cheat days.

I use this Eatsmart one, which is $50, and have had no problems with it.

But Eatsmart has cheaper ones if you just want something that gives your weight without estimating body fat %, muscle mass %, and such. I'm sure they're just as accurate.

u/tvtb · 1 pointr/raleigh

I have this scale but this cheaper one isn't necessarily any less accurate (but it might be). These scales use electronics to estimate your body fat percentage which may be inaccurate. There are more accurate ways that proper facilities use that involve dunking your whole body in water, but I've seen youtube videos where professionals have doubts about those readings too.

In other words, don't get hung up on the exact number, just measure first thing in the morning after you pee/poo but before you have anything to eat/drink to make the measurement as reliable as possible, and then try to watch it go down over time.

I have one of these scales and my mother-in-law has a different one. When both scales say I have about 19% I'll say i've hit the goal.

u/JustSomeBadAdvice · 1 pointr/relationships

It varies for everyone, and depends on what kind of caloric reduction you run on. The recommendation from the article I read was 500 calories.

That said, here's the reasons why I chose this diet, and the results I've seen so far.

  1. This is the diet that bodybuilders and athletes use to reach very low bodyfat percentages before competitions. As low as 5-6%, almost unhealthy low. Those guys can't mess around with fad diets, because choosing the wrong diet means losing the gold medal.
  2. It encourages me to eat things I already like- Bacon, sausage, all kinds of meat, avocados, nuts, eggs. The carb-up, low fat day is also great.
  3. This diet is scientifically sound- Ketosis is the process your body uses to burn fat for fuel, and switching into ketosis apparently takes some time and energy, which is why carbohydrate based diets struggle. This keeps you in ketosis for 6 days of the week.

And these are the results I've gotten. My goal is different from yours- I actually don't want to drop body weight, I want to reduce bodyfat percentage while gaining lean muscle.

  4. Starting at the beginning of the first week I was at 185lbs, 16% bodyfat.
  5. At two weeks I had dropped down to 176 lbs, still measured 15.5% bodyfat though(% measurement is not extremely accurate though).
  6. Just now, at 3 weeks I am back up to 178 lbs, but my bodyfat % is at 13.0%, which is the lowest I've ever measured.

I've tried several other diets before this in a failed attempt to move the bodyfat % needle. Nothing else has dropped me below 15%, so I'm pretty happy.

I measure bodyfat % with this: Omron scale

It's not 100% accurate, but if you control the variables. Like test every morning, fasted, after using the bathroom, around the same levels of water. I'm male, 30 year old and 5'6". When I started my fat loss journey (on April 15), my stats were
Weight : 161.8 lbs, body fat - 20.8 % ( fat - 33.65 lb) , muscle mass % - 41.9% (muscle weight - 67.79 lb)

My current stats (on June 2, around 8 weeks later )are
Weight : 152.4 lbs, body fat - 18.5% ( fat - 29.19 lb), muscle mass % - 43.1% (muscle weight - 65.58 lb)

Fat loss -> 33.65 - 29.19 = 4.46 lb
Muscle loss -> 67.79 - 65.58 = 2.21 lb
Total Fat + muscle weight loss -> 4.46 + 2.21 = 6.67
So total weight loss -> 161.8 - 152.4 = 9.4 lb
Unaccounted weight loss -> 9.4 - 6.67 = 2.7 lb

So I've three questions :

  1. Am I losing too much muscle or is it within the limits?
  2. Is the unaccounted weight loss is loss of glycogen and water weight and will be replenished as soon as I stop cutting? or is there any other reason for it?
  3. Is Reddit PPL fine for cutting?

Edit: I use this machine to measure above values. I know it might be wrong but till now it has given consistent values.

Do you have a body fat% scale? I have one (and granted they're all a little inaccurate) and it shows my body fat and muscle mass % which really motivates me. I know it's not 100% accurate but the percentages changing over time IS accurate. Mine was pretty cheap too and gets great reviews on amazon:

http://www.amazon.com/EatSmart-Precision-Capacity-Recognition-Technology/dp/B004L6NTHU/

There are different ones on there too.

I also just bought a garmin vivofit band to count my steps and I love it.

u/IllegalBeaver · 1 pointr/xxketo

I always track my weight using one scale only because of this. My parents have a medical scale but I'm always a different number on theirs than mine. The instructions with my digital scale say to calibrate it each time it's picked up off the floor.
Also, take up measuring yourself as well. You can remain the same weight and still drop in inches which is always nice to see.

u/yobsmezn · 1 pointr/keto

As previous respondent notes, they're fairly flawed, but maybe the best one is this model, which uses handgrips as well as the foot plate to measure a small current running through your body.

Will be more accurate than most. Assume it can be found on Amazon.co.uk as well.

u/wavecontrol · 1 pointr/loseit

It's accurate within .2lbs and gives consistent reassuring results that are very important when you want to see your day to day/ week to week progress.

I have another from target, but with it, I'm only confident that I'm +/- 3lbs of what it reads and that is annoying if you are trying to hit goals every week.

Can anyone help me? I used a machine like this to find out my fat and muscle weight. I know that it isn't accurate and it says I have 29% of body fat and 27kgs of muscle. Looking at pics like this, I can estimate my body fat to be around 22-25%.

The wiki has the formula help to calculate required TDEE - link

u/kvossera · 1 pointr/Fitness

No problem.

Did you measure your body to get the numbers to plug into the calculator? If so did you do the measuring or did someone else? Did you take the measurement more than once, like you taped your neck, took the tape off, taped again, took it off, and taped again (tape in this instance being the measuring tape)?

I was in the Army and have been taped because I didn’t meet height weight standards, too many muscles, so yeah I’ve been there and done that version of it.

you might try something like this. I like that it has an app and charts my progress. it’s pretty motivating to see all the different numbers change.

Yyou might consider changing the batteries before buying a new one. I know my scale goes stupid when the batteries are low. Which happens way more often than it should because apparently I have a ghost who likes to try to weigh in frequently too.

I have a weight watchers scale that I got through my credit card rewards program, I don't think the particular model is made anymore, but I've heard good things about the other weight watchers models too.

When I get a new one, I'm probably going to get this or another by the same brand. My mother has had one of that brand for ages and it still works great and she loves it. Also no waiting for it to be ready to use - it's just step on.

u/glitterkittie · 1 pointr/xxfitness

Mine is exactly in line with the caliper one that my trainer did on me. It also doesn't fluctuate much. Thus, even if it was off, at least it's not fluctuating so that I can see how much body fat I'm losing or gaining. I have this one.

u/nate451 · 1 pointr/Fitness

I've got a Balance High Accuracy Digital Body Fat Scale, sold by Greater Goods. It's not super expensive, so it could just be a bad scale.

I thought mine was accurate for a while, too, because it's not always easy to compare yourself against pictures of others. There are so many different ways our bodies can be composed. I had way more visible muscle than the 20 - 25% pics I saw, but I figured maybe I just carried my fat in different places. (I do carry most of my fat on my legs, according to DEXA.) But I was way off.

It's not that big a deal unless you're planning goals around your weight and body fat percentage. I thought I needed to aim around 165 lbs, based on having 22% BF. Turns out anything below 175 - 180 would be crazy.

How much short-term weight fluctuation is normal?

I just got a new scale and have been weighing myself a couple of times, and it seems to believe I have lost 12 pounds in 2 days (in which I've changed no significant eating/exercise habits, mind you). I don't see any way this could be true, but I've also been ruling out technical causes, and the data doesn't seem random enough to just be measurement error.

I have been weighing in at different times of day, which can account for some of it (in fact, in part I wanted to quantify the daily fluctuations before actually making changes), but 12 pounds is way out of the question, right?

From what I've read daily weight fluctuation is more on the order of 3 pounds or so. Anyone have any explanations?

I'd suggest purchasing a Bio Impedance scale to help keep track of your body fat percentage. It's not perfect in that it can be off from time-to-time, but as long as you measure at the same time of day each week you'll get a roughly consistent measurement. This way you can eat more and know if you're gaining muscle or just gaining more fat (at least to a degree).

Below is the one I purchased a few years ago but seems like there's a lot of options now so you may want to do some research.

https://smile.amazon.com/gp/product/B004L6NTHU

I've gotten official DEXA scans which is the most accurate way to measure BF% according to many but costs $45 each time. The scale above was off by about 0.6% BF when compared to my DEXA scan. Eg. My scale said I was 10%, but the DEXA reflected 10.6%. No food or water before either measurement.

Outside of that, make sure you're getting enough protein (many studies suggest between 0.82g of protein per pound of body weight is the max your body can utilize, but some prefer to go by 1.0g per pound of body weight).

Hope this helps.
