4" Leaf Stainless Steel Folding Pocket Keychain Knife - Sharp Compact

u/Eric-R · 24 pointsr/sailing

Obviously, it will depend on what he's already gotten for himself, what you can afford, what kind of sailing he's doing, and where you are.

You know your dad, I don't, but I'm going to suggest that a genuinely antique spyglass isn't going to have the utility you are envisioning. If he has a den/study/other area to display a curio, then fine, but it probably shouldn't be knocked around and soaked in the ways it will while sailing. A good [waterproof pair of binoculars] ( http://www.amazon.com/Bushnell-Waterproof-Fogproof-Prism-Binocular/dp/B006U3ZIWQ/ref=sr_1_1?s=sporting-goods&ie=UTF8&qid=1370063798&sr=1-1&keywords=waterproof+binoculars) would be much better, IMO.

In my limited experience, here are some things most sailors might need, in no particular order:

They did, but they were both lame.

Just a bottle opener, screwdriver, scissors on the TSA Jetsetter: http://www.amazon.com/Victorinox-Jetsetter-3-Pocket-Knife/dp/B00932EPYI

And file, nail clips, toothpick, scissors on the Swiss Clipper: http://www.amazon.com/Wenger-16971-Clipper-Watermelon-Translucent/dp/B001035QFK/

u/Osedox · 14 pointsr/EDC

Victorinox Cadet, same answer I always give to this question. Small but useful and universally nonthreatening. Plus it never hurts to have a bottle opener and a few screwdrivers with you as well. [Under 30$ also] (https://www.amazon.com/Victorinox-53044-Cadet-Black-Swiss/dp/B000WEG8PA/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1468775396&sr=8-1&keywords=victorinox+cadet)

u/DedRok · 12 pointsr/knifeclub

Victorinox Cadet. Its 30 dollars, it's a knife and it's a multitool. The silver metal Alox scales look classy, and on top of all that this thing is Amazing.

Lastly it has a place where you can engrave peoples names on the other side of the scale.

My favorite knife by far to whittle with is this one, the Cold Steel Tuff Lite:

http://i.imgur.com/w0PhkOw.jpg

I use it, and the smaller version of it, the Mini Tuff Lite, for most of my carving (full disclosure, I'm a novice wood carver who just enjoys killing time noodling around).

While I generally prefer the inexpensive Cold Steel knives, I do own a dozen or so dedicated carving knives of a wide variety of makers, including some custom knives.

For an inexpensive option in fixed blades I really like the Mora 120 and Mora 122:

http://i.imgur.com/6L0w1lZ.jpg

I do also own some traditional whittlers, but I really haven't ever warmed up to carving with them.

I use the Tuff Lite knives so much that I've got an assortment of them, and have converted some of them to prison-shank style fixed blades by wrapping them heavily for comfort:

http://i.imgur.com/j8pN4Gd.jpg

They're cheap, sturdy and easy to sharpen. I do use a file to break the edges on the blade spine when I get them, but other than that I find them incredible comfortable to carve with. I frequently complete entire projects with nothing but the Tuff Lite (though I do have a collection of gouges and chisels and such as well, I prefer to work with a knife).

Victorinox makes a 'my first' pocket knife which has a rounded tip that will prevent stabbing. There's also the flight safe swiss army knife, the jetsetter if you don't want them to have a 'real' knife right away.

There's also the Leatherman Leap which has a user-installable knife so you can give them that part at a later date or remove it if it turns out they are irresponsible. And Leatherman has a flightsafe multitool too in the leatherman style

  • ~$7-8 Sanrenmu 7010/710 - You can find these at Gearbest for cheap as hell when they have sales but they're absolutely $30 worth of knife
  • ~$10-20 Opinel no.6-12 - Depends on blade size/steel/handle wood. #6 is under 3in blade if that kind of thing matters.
  • ~$20 CRKT Drifter
  • ~$20 Spyderco Byrd Cara Cara2
  • ~$20-25 Ontario Rat II or Rat I
  • ~$30 Victorinox Cadet Alox
  • ~$30 Kershaw Cryo
  • ~$35 CRKT Ripple
  • ~$35 Spyderco Persistence
  • ~$40 Kershaw Skyline - Often on sale in the ~$30 range
  • ~$40 Kershaw Leek - Same sales as with the Skyline \^^

Honorable Mention: Case knives. Traditional lockbacks. Hard as nails and pretty to boot. True pocket knives. Your grandfather (possibly great grandfather) had one. Good stuff the lot of them. $25-50 will get you a legacy knife that you can carry and use and then pass to your kid.

You don't need to spend $200 to get a quality, durable, reliable knife. I've owned all of these knives at one time or another and loved every one of them. Sure they needed sharpening more often and sometimes something a little more drastic (Sanrenmus are often cheaper to replace than fix) but the value is insane. Plus, lets face facts; we're much more likely to break out our Cadet when we get box duty than our Sebenza.

Knife enthusiasts (brothers) if there's a weighed and measured cheapo that I forgot, let me know.

Leatherman Style PS

Swiss Army Jetsetter

Just because the don't have a blade though doesn't mean the TSA won't take them. TSA don't give a shit, TSA just take what they want.

u/BlackhawksJPF · 8 pointsr/EDC

Classic Alox is $22 on amazon or the cadet is about $30 and comes in silver, red, or black

u/desertUsuf · 8 pointsr/knives

What about a Swiss Army Knife? Something with multiple uses will be far more useful for her, and she'll probably take it out a lot more. Perhaps a Hunstman or something similar that has a good range of tools.

u/dbmeed · 8 pointsr/EDC

Unless something has changed recently, you should be able to carry a cadet in the UK. And in most places outside of airlines.

u/BastionBlair · 7 pointsr/Survival

I bought the Victorinox Spirit and I love it.

This exact model, came with the belt pouch too.

u/jonfitt · 7 pointsr/subnautica

There’s this one. It’s not a good knife, but it looks like the Subnautica knife.

Gerber Remix Knife, Fine Edge https://www.amazon.com/dp/B001QVKSH2

u/NelyafinweMaitimo · 7 pointsr/EDC

It opens. I mostly use it for things like opening packages, cutting tags or stray threads, basically little everyday knife needs. It's not a hardcore survival knife, but it's perfect for what it's meant to do.

(I also sometimes hold it discreetly in one hand if I'm going through a sketchy parking lot or w/e--basically a step up from the "hold your keys between your fingers" self-defense advice you sometimes hear.)

u/crossborder_commuter · 6 pointsr/EDC

So this is what I have with me usually when going to work. Which is a 1h journey by high speed train, crossing an international border.

  • And there is another Spyderco hiding in there too.
  • The tiny flashlight is a Lenser K1
  • The small flashlight is, I think, a Fenix

  • iPhone 5S
  • Beyerdynamic iDX 160 iE earbuds
  • eVic Supreme eCigarette with a Nautilus Aspire tank
  • A Schneider eXtra Document Pigment Pen
  • A lightning cable

  • Leatherman Squirt PS4
  • A Victorinox quick-release key ring, released
  • NiteIze key holder, keys, car key

  • Passport
  • Maxpedition Pouch (and another, the MaxPedition EDC not shown)

The Cold Steel Mini Tuff Lite would be the ultimate woodworking knife at that price.

The Ka-Bar Bob Dozier Folding Hunter is also a good choice for an inexpensive EDC knife.

4" Green Leaf Stainless Steel Folding Pocket Keychain Knife (Green) Sharp Compact https://www.amazon.com/dp/B01C4HRLF8/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_e154yb8TY1N9S

u/MarrymeCaptHowdy · 6 pointsr/nonononoyes

Carry a pocket knife. It doesn't have to be a huge elaborated one, I have one of those on my keys, comes in handy every other day. As long as the blade is sharp, it is absolutely enough to quickly cut through a retractable leash. Which can be necessary in other situations as well, a leash can get caught up in a number of things (sorry, not trying to scare you, just saying).

u/Wereling · 6 pointsr/minimalism

I carry a Victorinox Cadet. I had one as a kid, and though itried a number of different knives when I got older, I found that the Cadet offered the best combination of utility and easy of carry, especially when paired with a suspension clip to hang down the inside of the pocket.

u/HappyNCrappy · 6 pointsr/EDC
u/justsomeguy75 · 6 pointsr/EDC

An ER is one of the few places I don't think people should be carrying a knife, at least not one that's accessible. Still, a simple Swiss Army Knife dropped in your pocket isn't going to get grabbed by a psych patient and it's very handy.

u/tomarlowe · 6 pointsr/BuyItForLife

The traditional red scales on your typical SAK can crack over time. If you want to get something a little more BIFL, I would go with one of the ALOX models, like this.

Things:

u/GTI-Mk6 · 5 pointsr/EDC

The Skeletool doesn't really have any prying ability, but it IS a very cool tool with a few simple and basic funtions and is very lightweight. It would pair well with a Leatherman one piece tool, I'd suggest the Pirahna.

Both the Victorinox Swisstool Spirit and the Leatherman Wave and thier related counterparts have flathead drivers on them that are pretty thick and should support pretty heavy prying loads.

Both have Pliers with cutters, multiple drivers, (though the leatherman uses bits where as the Vic uses fixed drivers) pry bars, and knives and are fairly "average" in size.

Really these are the two best multitools in the world anyone, nothing exceeds these two IMO. You can't go wrong with either. If you need any info I own and carry both (and some others) and should be able to answer any questions if you have any!

u/treeses · 4 pointsr/EDC

The Victorinox Swisstool Spirit has the tools you're looking for and has a serrated knife instead of a straight edge blade, so that might better compliment your regular knife. If I recall correctly, the pliers are shaped a little more bluntly than leatherman pliers and they have a more ergonomic handle. Might be better suited for your purposes.

u/mroystacatz · 4 pointsr/knifeclub

Here are my personal essentials.

  • Spyderco Delica 4: $60 VG-10 steel, comes in tons of colors
  • Spyderco Endura 4: Larger version of Delica
  • Morakniv Companion: $12-$20 A really awesome fixed blade, outperforms knives triple it's price.
  • Victorinox Tinker: $20-25 classic swiss army knife, really great quality in general. Lots of tools but not too many so it's easily pocket carried.
  • Victorinox Cadet: Smaller Swiss Army Knife, aluminum handles. Lots of colors.
  • Kershaw Cryo, or Cryo 2: $20-40 steel frame lock, Hinderer design, good price, tons of colors. The Cryo 2 is the same as the Cryo just larger.
  • Ontaro Rat 1 or 2: $25-30 Classically shaped folders with a very rugged build for a liner lock. The 2 is a smaller version of the 1.

Also, you're going to want a sharpening system that works for you in the long run. I personally use the Spyderco Sharpmaker But there are tons of good sharpening options out there.

P.S: You're going to get a lot of people hating on your Gerbers most likely, that's because they're honestly not worth it in the long run. They use very low quality steel for the price and they don't have the best quality control. I'm not saying your Gerbers are trash or anything. But they definitely won't last very long. Just about all of the knives I listed will last you a lifetime if you treat them right, and oil/sharpen them correctly.

After 9 years of carrying a Classic SAK and rarely using anything but the blade, I just switched to one of these (7 grams): https://www.amazon.com/Derma-safe-Folding-Utility-Survival-5-pack/dp/B0067EMCVI

u/IronPentacarbonyl · 4 pointsr/EDC

I'm a fan of the Executive, which is very slim and has about a 2" main blade. It comes in black, too. If you want a bit more knife and don't mind losing the toothpick/tweezers and scissors, the Cadet is popular for good reason. Among the keychain size knives, my favorite is the Rambler, for packing all the most important (to me, anyway) tools into a very small package.

Vic Swisstool Spirit ,in my personal opinion, is the king of multitools. I absolutely adore mine. F&F is fantastic, tool selection is thoughtful, built very well, and I REALLY love that the tools are on the OUTSIDE of the handle so you don't have to open the pliers first.

I don't know what your girlfriend is really into, but the Swiss army cadet in silver alox (http://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B0007QCOEC) is a perfect first pocket knife for most women. There's even a little spot that you could get initials engraved on the one side.

I'm going to bust up the Leatherman love train and recommend the Victoronox SwissTools. You can check out the Spirit or the RS/Rescue Tool. While I love my Leatherman Surge, the fit and finish between it and my Swiss RS tool is night and day. My Surge is a beast of a tool the RS tool can keep up with no matter what I am using them for, the RS tool feels like a fine Swiss watch vs the Surge which feels like a finely crafted hammer.

u/ARKnife · 2 pointsr/knives

I have the Victorinox Cadet just for these cases.

It has a classic useful design that is legal pretty much anywhere and won't raise an eyebrow.

Plus it's slim, light and disappears in the pocket.

u/rprebel · 2 pointsr/trees

I've always been partial to Victorinox. The price is really dependent on what tools you want. Anywhere from a few dollars for the really small ones to $20-30 for a mid-size (that would have most/all of the tools I listed earlier) to $45 for a Swiss Champ Plus. Of course, there's this as well, but my pockets aren't that big.

u/TOUCHER_OF_SHEEP · 2 pointsr/EDC

Alright, sounds good. A very basic recommendation would be a Spyderco Endura, which is a great knife in VG-10 stainless steel. In this steel you should occasionally oil your blade, but that's really it. If that looks too big, the Spyderco Delica is the same knife, essentially, but smaller. Another good Spyderco would be the Spyderco Stretch, also in VG-10. All three of these have strong back locks.

For a slightly more expensive knife, the Spyderco Manix 2 comes in 154CM stainless steel and a hard-use ball bearing lock.

The Benchmade Griptilian comes in 154CM stainless steel and has the second strongest lock on the market on it- the axis lock. There's also a version with a thumb hole instead of a thumb stud.

The Buck TM Vantage Pro comes in S30V stainless steel- one of the better steels available up until the $150 mark- but only costs about $60, and is by far the cheapest knife of its size available in S30V.

The Kershaw Blur in S30V is an amazing assisted knife in good steel. The Kershaw Junk Yard Dog is a great folder in a composite of a couple of good steels.

The Zero Tolerance 0700 is kind of funny looking but a solid knife in S30V.

So far, all of these are within your price range. Now, I'll move up just a bit and double it- you're now looking at a $200 range.

The Manix 2 XL in S30V is one of the strongest folders out there. It's definitely a hard-use knife and will survive a hell of a lot.

The Benchmade 275 Adamas is probably the strongest folder in existence. It's in D2 tool steel and has an incredibly robust axis lock that was beefed up to take more damage.

The Spyderco Caly 3.5 in ZDP-189 steel is an incredible knife in fantastic blade steel. I wish they made more things in it, I really do.

The Spyderco Techno is a bit smaller but will certainty last nonetheless.

The Spyderco Sage in S30V will do it for ya, that's for sure.

I'd love me some Benchmade Emissary in S30V.

The ZT 0350 is a folding tank.

All of these knives will last for whatever you want to do with them. Some are too heavy to reasonably EDC, like the BM Adamas and the ZT 0350, but others, like the BM Griptilian, are perfect EDC knives.

Knives, cleaning gear, and flashlights are never unwelcome gifts for gun/weapon nerds. I linked you a bunch of decent tools that would make great gift ideas. Some more affordable than others. Get him a couple really nice things for like 40-50 each or a bunch of little affordable things and toss them in a 20 dollar range bag.

If it helps, here were my requirements when selecting one, in no order:

  • Folding, for convenience;
  • Secure lock for the blade;
  • Easy one-handed opening. None of those little fingernail slot things;
  • Blade approximately 3" long. Much less and it isn't useful; much more and it's considered a weapon in some places;
  • Blade part straight and part serrated, for versatility;
  • Marlinspike;
  • Good value / relatively inexpensive. I can't spend my hard-earned money on a mother-of-pearl inlay or whatever, though spending extra for quality construction, good steel, etc. is worth it;
  • Rugged construction, as I need to be able to trust my core gear without question;
  • Lanyard loop placed where I can open either the blade or the spike and use them naturally without interference from the lanyard;

Based on this, I selected the the Myerchin P300. I've used it for about four years now, sailing 100 to 130 days per year. This thing is rugged and well built. The pliers seemed like a gimmick at first but I have used them so many times, usually when I don't expect to need them (otherwise I would be carrying the right pliers for the job), and they're just the right size for a lot of tasks.

The Boye is my second choice, but at over four times the price I think I would be kicking myself if I lost it or saw it washed overboard.

My third choice is the Camillus rigging knife. The construction just doesn't feel as rugged to me as the Myerchin, though I haven't really given it a fair shake.
u/clairebones · 2 pointsr/changemyview

I carry one of these in my pocket every day. Here in the UK it's legal due to the length, it's not big enough to be useful in harming anyone or even really self defence. I use it every day though - I open mail packages with it, I remove the labels from my clothes, and I use the nail file/screwdriver/scissors/etc on it every day too. At least once a week someone asks to borrow my multitool for something.

I don't think it's sensible or practical to carry large knives that are clearly intended to hurt, but a small leatherman or swiss army knife can be immensely useful.

u/tymilu · 2 pointsr/AskReddit

Swiss army knife. This one is all you will probably ever need. Small enough to slip into your pocket.

Also, since you mentioned pens...Zebra makes a killer ballpoint. Smooth, so no writer's cramp. Fine point, for small handwriting. Also, it doesn't seem to blow up if you take it on a plane for some reason.

If you like kershaw you can get a blur with S30v steel for around 65$ on amazon if you still want a kershaw. I've never been too impresed with them since I find their build quality to be lacking. They seem to have an excessive amount of blade play and use average quality steels in most of their knives. The a premium steel that can hold a razor sharp working edge. The spyderco delica/endura line is also a great knife. They have full flat ground blades that come razor sharp from the factory with absolutlely no blade play. I personally carry a green delica as one of my edc knives. The dragonfly is also great if you want a knife that dissapears on your person. it is a featherweight knife, that cuts and handles like a much larger knife.

If you are looking for a knife that can take an absolutely harsh beating, I would have to reccomend an Ontario RAT 1 or 2 depending on you size preference. They are a bit heavy in hand compared to other knives it size, but perform just as good as any of my spydercos. It is also on the cheaper side at around 25$.

The benchmades are also a good choice, but I would also reccomend the benchmade mini-presidio.

Anyways, I thought I might as well just post some links to them:

The Harbor Freight was an impulse thing. Same with the cheap-o Home Depot multitools.

The rest is pretty budget-conscious stuff. No matter what, though, even though they're not considered top-of-the-line or whatever, nobody will ever convince me that Schrade doesn't make some pretty damn good knives.

u/ChunksOWisdom · 2 pointsr/EDC

That's one of the things I looked at, but I'd prefer something a bit smaller, like the regular alox version. I would really like the bantam (alox, plastic), but it's also bigger/longer than I'd like. I might get the plastic one and see if I could somehow put on a custom handle, or even try to put on the handle from this knife, they look like they're about the same size

u/angryqueso · 2 pointsr/EDC

It really depends on what you want out of your multitool. My leatherman skeletool CX often finds itself in my EDC for class/general life, but my leatherman wave finds itself in my pocket or on my belt when I'm working or camping. For a compact, quality multitool, the skeletool is the way to go IMO. The more features, the more weight, and added pocket bulk.

Another good, small multitool that is very compact would be a victorinox cadet but you give up pliers and what not.

More requirements you'd like it to have would help make a better rec!

u/lord_terrene · 2 pointsr/news

I made the mistake of arguing this with a TSA agent that was confiscating my tiny Swiss Army knife after I had taken it on about 30 flights, and was informed that I was incorrect. I was outraged, so I went online and discovered that I was indeed incorrect.

I had heard of the proposed rule change but I never heard that TSA later rescinded that rule change prior to its implementation. Small scissors and screwdrivers are all you can bring onboard, nothing with a blade.

Victorinox makes a few TSA approved tools one can allegedly bring onboard, but twice I have had to check these when flying home from overseas because their airport screeners didn't want to take any chances.

u/Jteph · 2 pointsr/Random_Acts_Of_Amazon

Aaalright so he's a simple man. I love that. He likes his tools and his gear to be life lasting and that's something I totally agree with.

A strong ass hatchet would be something manly that he might like.

I know this is out of your price range but a good electric Drill saves you so much trouble when you love fixing things around the house.

He has a pocket knife? Why not a multi-tool. I love these things. Super useful. Or a Swiss army knife.

I would love to have any the above mentioned items as gifts so yeah.

Hope you will find the perfect one thou. Happy hunting :D

u/riggerjeff · 2 pointsr/knives

Buck or Locking Swiss Army Knife would be my go tos.

I also really like the Camillus 6.5 Ti Folding Rigging Knife which is currently selling for $21. I carried one regularly until I got a Boyes Boat folder, and I think it’s a great value.
(My Amazon Review: Perfect pocket knife for a sailor dreaming of the sea while toiling at a day job) Very pocketable. No clip but it’s lanyard/fob ready. Nice utility shape — No point on the blade so it’s not “stabby”. Blade locks in place and is safely released, even in rolling seas. Reasonable edge that holds well, particularly if you hone it to work, not to shave and it’s easily sharpened and maintained. I use the spike all the time. I know it won’t pass the sniff test of some here, but I carried it for years while far “superior” blades stayed home and it never failed me. I also like that it looks like a tool, not a tacticool weapon. (I have a few of those too but I prefer a lower profile EDC.)

IMHO a saw blade is almost as important as a knife blade.

This is the one I got for the survival kit in my vehicle. It's big and chunky for a pocket though.

This one is more pocket size and a classic that a lot of survival guys like.

This book is useful for practically any sailor.

A marlin spike is cool as well.

I never go anywhere without my Victorinox Champion Plus. It's the bulky model that has every tool except pliers.

u/hellomynameis_satan · 2 pointsr/camping

The Farmer or the Pioneer are also good choices. I have the Farmer and it's like the Camper II minus the corkscrew and small blade. It's also got the aluminum side plates which are much better for grip and durability IMO. The Pioneer is a great size for EDC but for camping I think the added saw blade on the Farmer is worth it.

u/JakeLackless · 2 pointsr/BDSMcommunity

What about a marlin spike, like this? The marlin spike is the spike on the far right. It's normally used for digging at knots in rope that are too stuck. It's pointy enough to be an interesting sensation, without being so pointy that it'll break the skin (unless you really go crazy).

I've also seen this sort of thing, but never used it.

I recently received $400 in Amazon gift cards from my Chase Freedom rewards card. These are some of the practical items I've bought for myself:

Fenix E21 Flashlight (2xAA, 150/48 Lumens) - $32.45

Victorinox Swiss Army Champion Plus Pocket Knife - $29.99

Spyderco Resilience Black G-10 PlainEdge Knife - $39.14

Those 3 items add up to $101.58 but if you buy a flashlight you'll also need to buy batteries. I also bought a Fenix TK35 High Performance 820 Lumen Flashlight after being impressed by the Fenix E21.

Besides those items I bought a 1000mA car charger for my phone to replace a cheap 500mA charger, two 4GB SD (not SDHC) cards for use in my '07 Audi, a 5x7 Maxpedition Fatty Pocket Organizer, and a Philips Sonicare HX9332/05 DiamondClean Rechargeable Electric Toothbrush

I did a quick check on amazon and came up with three choices that seem decent

maxam sailors tool

Camillus

Oldtimer

I don't know maxam but it has a lot of good reviews on amazon. I do know Camillus and Old Timer though and they make good knives. Camillus would be the one I'd pick but I'd get a maxam too as back up since it's so cheap. Old timer knives are made by Schrade and they are usually good knives.

Hope this helped.

PS- Gerber quality has gone down over the last few years so I wouldn't recommend buying anything they are selling, but to each their own.

The big three are heavy, plain and simple (about 2-3lbs heaver than many people's full load out). But they are what you have and I assume what you like based on your post.

  • I agree the tarp could definitely be upgraded but $$$.
  • The Nalgene is what it is. Unfortunately your description of why you go with it is a good metaphor in general for UL gear - it tends to need a bit more TLC. As @skol_vikings_skol said, ditch it!
  • The rain gear is a bit heavy but also pretty spendy to improve at this point.
  • I actually like the fleece over a down replacement. Everything that was said about down (lighter, packable, warmer) is true but you may find you need to hike in the fleece at 8k in the Cascades.
  • Extra socks?

I think the other people are right on some of the items - you can nickle and dime your way down at least a pound, maybe two, with some cheap alternatives.

Lastly, and I don't mean to sound like your mom...I don't see any trekking poles or Microspikes. Are you familiar with your route and/or have you confirmed it's snow free? I've been spending most of my weekends in the Washington Cascades and have found plenty of places that still require snow crossing. A lot of it is relatively harmless and done in trail runners alone but I just thought I'd mention it.

Here's my 1-2 night pack for this weekend:

I bring the Squirt PS4 in winter when the pliers are handy to fix snowshoe or binding gear. Rest of the year the Swiss army classic is nice to have, though its tweezers aren't great. If I'm really going UL its a Derma-Safe but I don't consider that sufficient when I'm solo off-trail.

I like your gear notes. Anyways, most of the weight cuts will come from your Big 3, which unfortunately are traditionally the most expensive changes to make. I've noted some budget choices, but otherwise being truly UL is left up to cottage manufacturers or DIY.

  • Hammock is definitely a big anchor in terms of weight. There are some very well received budget (relative to tarps/mids/tents/etc) options such as Dutchware Gear or Dream Hammock Darien, etc. You can always use your current rain fly, stakes, etc. (edit: JK, it looks like your rain fly is built in, Simply Light Designs has a really solid cheap tarp though, among other choices).

  • Your sleeping bag isn't that bad, an EE quilt would cut ~300g but the weight per $ value wouldn't be worth it. If you do switch to a lighter hammock, make sure that your CCF Pad + current sleeping bag configuration is still comfortable (as in, the usual setup would include an underquilt as well for insulation). I personally don't use an UQ with my UL hammock and am fine until about 4C/40F, but I sleep warm.

  • For your pack choice, make sure the rest of your gear fits as well - both weight and volumes are important to match. Your pack should honestly be the last thing you buy. Regardless, the Osprey Exos you've linked is a decent choice, but if you have access to an REI so is the 45L Flash and such. These are generally lightweight but not UL, if you want to spend big $ you can go UL but the mid range 40-50L packs are definitely fine (and durable).

  • You can cut your pot weight by 4x if you grab a DIY can pot, plus they're super cheap and easy to make if you need to replace it on the trail (same with any Al windscreens or lids).

  • I recommend it often but I would bring another BIC mini, having redundancy in lighters is a good choice for little weight.

  • I'm pretty sure water on the AT is plentiful (be sure to confirm this, I haven't been), but if that's the case I think just 2x 1L Smart water bottles are better than both your 3L Camelbak and extra Gatorade bottle. This would of course change your water filtering system as well, probably requiring you to get a Sawyer Squeeze or Mini. Overall it would be about $30-40 to cut 150-200g. If you don't make this change, atleast swap the gatorade for a smart water one.

  • I haven't actually heard of sock liners, are they necessary? If your extremities are that cold I understand, but merino/smartwool Darn Tough socks are probably good enough on their own, plus you have a heavy pair of socks already.

  • I personally would ditch the pants and just use running shorts and then use the wool baselayer when needed. Also I don't think you need both a long sleeve shirt and a wool baselayer shirt, seems overlapping. I generally have, tops: baselayer tshirt, fleece mid layer, down or rain jacket exterior. bottoms: running shorts with tights as needed....clothing is generally quite personal though, so do whatever you're comfortable with.

  • Ditch your boots for Trail Runners, you'll love it. If you cut over 1,000g with this switch you're saving 1kg 3500km (35oz 2200miles, for you USC measurement folk). I don't think weight per distance is an actual thing, but I'm sure it ties into work / power / energy / other Physics concepts haha. If you're uncomfortable with trail runners or afraid of wet feet, I still push forward the idea because they're awesome footwear. Check out Skurka's piece on it if you're curious.

  • Your med kit looks good, but a main thing to stress is to make sure you know how to use everything in it and the purpose of each item.

  • Switch your swiss army knife for a cheap Dermasafe utility knife

  • I like your completely unnecessary category, that being said, the Fitbit is indeed completely unnecessary, but you do you. Selfie stick is clearly essential..

That's my rant, good stuff! Let me know if you have further questions or concerns or I'm dumb.
u/dfmtr · 1 pointr/AskNYC

You can just get a bladeless one like this: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00932EPYI/

u/Epinephrined · 1 pointr/EDC

The Skyline definitely sounds like what I'm looking for, I will probably get one soon. Traction probably won't be an issue, I'll likely be carrying something more robust when I'm likely to run into such situations anyways. I just want something with a decent sized blade (> 3") that's light (< 3.5 oz) and thin (< .5") to carry when I don't need something heftier.

Found the silver, black, and red Alox Cadets on Amazon. I don't see any other colors either. I can get a silver Cadet for $20 locally, but I'd rather have black and I can probably find a cheaper price somewhere. My Wenger is heavily worn but still holding up, so I'm not really in a rush to get another SAK.

Sorry, can't recommend a good axe, let alone one to EDC. The little I know about axes is from Wranglerstar on Youtube.

As for knives, how much money are you willing to spend and what sort of tasks will the knife primarily be used for? Cutting threads off your t-shirts? Have yourself a little $39 Leek. Yes, another Kershaw. Get over it. Kershaw makes affordable knives for a variety of tasks.

Don't want a Kershaw still? Well, the OKC Rat-1 in $24 AUS8 or $44 D2. There's also the $22 OKC Utiliac. How about the very simple $29 Victorinox Cadet? The $31 Cold Steel Finn Wolf? The $44 Kizer Vanguard?

I own all of these knives, some of them for a lot longer than others. All of which are nice at a fair price. In that $40-$50 range you start getting the Spyderco Tenacious, Kershaw Blur (personally I think it's one of the best value knives and I recently damn near stole one from Amazon for $35), and the nicer CRKT M-16s. You might be able to fine a Spyderco Delica for ~$60.

If you need more of a multi-tool, the Leatherman Skeletool is awesome.

If you're just looking for a blade, the Kershaw Cryo is a really solid knife for the price (currently around $23). Because it's all metal, it has some weight to it, but I really like it and it's currently in my EDC.

If you want multifunction but not a large multitool, the Victorinox Swiss Army Cadet is stylish, lightweight, and very functional.

I've carried a Kershaw, I then went to Spyderco. But I found I didn't use them enough to carry them everyday. I've been carrying this Swiss army knife lately though and I love it. I use it almost every day. It's a little heavy, but I've gotten used to it. The Swiss army knife you linked to is great too. I just like the can opener and cork screw. There's a needle in there too which come in handy more than you would think.

A little late to this thread, but I prefer the Victorinox Swiss Army Climber II Pocket Knife over the regular Classic SD version. As an engineer, there's a few more tools out there to help me out, but it's not as bulky as some other ones.

I think it's just as important to balance function than to look stylish and save pocket space, especially with multi-purpose knives.

By initial look, that might be the Huntsman Ii made with Nylon scales instead of the usual shiny stuff. Is it missing the hole under the corkscrew where a pin would usually go?

As for toothpick and tweezers you can find them on Amazon or Victorinox sells them on their site.

I have one of these: REI waistpack in grey and black. I carry prescription sunglasses, case with earphones and usb cable, iPod Touch, wallet, checkbook, pens, eyedrops, AC & car adapter for cell phone, Moleskine Calendar, pepper spray, keys, all those damn cards every damn store gives you, and Swiss Army Knife in black. I don't usually carry into a store, but I'll pull out whatever I need. Call me a girl.

EDIT: I also carry a Swiss Army Knife Money Clip

I used to have its cousin, the Jetsetter but I lost it :(

High-end, high quality swiss tool would be my choice. Just make sure the one you get has the tools you need, they do make several options with different gadgets.

I'm a fan of the classic victorinox Swiss Army knife, like the huntsman

The Gerber Crucial isn't half bad on the cheap.

I use these. Use the Mora knife sometimes, but if I can prep everything ahead of time, this is my new goto UL knife.
