Not included in your list of interests, but Mark Zuehlke's For Honour's Sake: The War of 1812 and the Brokering of an Uneasy Peace is a remarkably readable history (bonus points because it's 200 years since the outbreak of the War of 1812). He's a former journalist, with a BA in history.

I studied history and lit in school, and I have to say this is easily the most enjoyable history I've read, and comes across very balanced; the War of 1812 is one of those ridiculous moments in history where every side tries to put forward entirely different outcomes. The author does a really good job of portraying (Anglo-)Canadian, American and (European) British actions, back room politiking, et cetera.

Not sure how spotty availability might be outside of the Great White North, but it really is an excellent read.
