Ok, sorry....a bit of situational bias. This happened to me today and it was a teen girl. But yes....NOBODY should be using their phone while driving.

Edit 2: Ok I was able to finally get the audio to work and I put it all together with both cameras with PiP in iMovie.
WARNING: Language and Rave music >>>> https://youtu.be/kwI89Jx4Em8

Edit:

Here’s the damage.

My nice hitch mounted bike rack saved the camera and also the bumper and lift gate from likely a lot more damage.

Not OP but I just got this rear view mirror dash cam with the rear camera for about $60 plus $20 for a memory card and it seems to work pretty well with great reviews that are actual real reviews according to fakespot.com

There's some more expensive fullscreen rear view mirror options but I'm cheap so the former is what I went with.

u/uptwolait · 113 pointsr/videos

I started out using a GoPro Hero HD before dashcams got affordable. I used a couple Garmin cams after that to have GPS and speed logging. This is what I'm currently using, and I absolutely love it.

u/puterTDI · 47 pointsr/therewasanattempt

this is what I have you also get automatic backup camera when you put it in reverse:

https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B010H0SL9O/ref=oh_aui_search_detailpage?ie=UTF8&psc=1

Only complaint I have at this point is that it will seemingly randomly decide not to start recording on startup and I'll have to manually tell it to start.

Edit: looks like they don't make that one anymore. I think this is the new version:

He's using the Falcon Zero F360 HD DVR drive cam. The left camera is suppose to face the driver. I use this when I drive for Lyft or Uber. I sometimes have both cameras face forward but line them up so it's a solid wide view. Not a bad price for a discreet drive cam.

I got this one: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07DGS11CM/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_i_iBaNDbD0CB7F2

Loving it so far. Crystal clear pictures, records front and rear at the same time, and I like the longer rear view mirror. Prior to this I had the Anker Roav, but that one is prone to battery swelling.

$76, front cam and screen are built into a mirror that attaches over your existing one. Not the highest quality camera out there, for instance the rear cam is only VGA resolution, but for the price it's pretty good. Small internal battery allows it to have a parking mode, where if it senses a shock it starts recording for a minute or so. I think it's worth the price, myself.

Mine is this one: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B07L1N4W4Y/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o09_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

It also functions as a rear view mirror/back up cam if you do some wiring.

You can buy a mirror with a dash cam already installed in it. (But then you gotta install the mirror in the car.) http://amzn.com/B00E5FMDI8

u/nacespeedle · 8 pointsr/Seattle

I've had a couple uber drivers rocking one of these:

http://amzn.com/B00E56WY18

The nice thing is that it captures both the front and rear view. If you're looking for one that's not mounted on the mirror and more discreet, Innov makes a great system that's perfect for both motorcycles and cars but a wee bit pricier:

Some dash cams mount to the rear view mirror and don't draw attention to themselves. Something like this.

I know most of these answers are jokes, but I saw my friend have a rearview camera screen built into his mirror like this and it blew my mind.

For the best quality dual camera systems you will want one that records at 1080p both front and rear, and for that there doesn't seem to be anything presently available for under $200.

I have never had a dual cam setup so I would not know what to recommend. You can take a look at the options I've listed and decide for yourself. As you can see, most of them are rear view mirror type.

I wear headphones almost all day at work and when we moved to a new office and I saw my desk was facing a wall with my back to the walkway, I immediately got this little mirror from Amazon. It works like a charm. https://www.amazon.com/iViEW-Computer-Laptop-Monitor-Mirror/dp/B007TLABSY

u/fatmanjogging · 5 pointsr/uberdrivers

Do it. I use a Falcon Zero F360. It has two cameras - one facing out, one in, and it fits over your existing rear-view mirror.

I have mine set to record over a loop. If something goes down, I swap out the memory card.

I live and do most of my work in a single-party consent state. However, for when I cross over to another state, I do have stickers in the back seat that say "smile - you're on camera!"

I've never had a pax refuse to be recorded. However, I have had some ask what I do with the footage. I simply tell them, "if something crazy happens, I'll pop the memory card out and hang onto that footage. Otherwise, it all gets deleted." After I explain why I have the camera, passengers are totally down with it. Even the drunkest people understand that it's there for my safety.

For dashcam, I suggest a dashcam that fits onto your rearview mirror.

Latches onto your rearview mirror, as well makes it bigger. The system comes with backup camera that you can install optionally.

$25 budget is going to get you... shit.

This one is roughly the cheapest "decent" one, and it's still not perfect. It's suggested here all the time. I've got one, and I don't hate it, though it does occasionally still corrupt videos or skip a few minutes here and there, which makes it unreliable. I can't imagine spending less than $100 on one.

> The model I believe this driver used (and that I and a bunch of other old-timers in this sub use) has been sold as the Falcon Zero F360, Wicked HD WCD-5801, Black Box M1000, and now the Pyle PLCMDVR52.

> A year ago they were $150, now I see them going for as low as $75 (Pyle). EDIT: that was summer 2016. Prices have gone up again, perhaps because more people a buying them. But there are still some available for $100 as of July 2017.

> Some include an SD card and some do not, so take that into consideration for price comparison. Specs says it only takes up to 32gb cards, but I put in a 64gb card and formatted it in the camera (apparently that's important) and it worked fine. YMMV.

I use the Falcon Zero F360.

  • It allows me to record both in front of the car and inside the car.
  • I can turn one of the cameras to face the driver side window if needed
  • Mounts to the rear view mirror

I also use another dash camera for the back as well to record behind the car.
u/stealer0517 · 3 pointsr/Dashcam

They do make some dashcam backup camera combos. They're usually not that great, but it's better than nothing in the back.

If you put them low enough you can still see where you're parking, but at the same time still see out into the distance a bit.

Here's an example, I think it records the rear view in that top right corner.

u/giggitygoo123 · 3 pointsr/Roadcam

I got this one in my mustang. I got it for $150 though during an amazon deal.

Edit: its on sale right now through amazon for $130 until 2:30 pm EST

u/Tr2v · 3 pointsr/uberdrivers

They’re legal everywhere (it’s YOUR car), but some states require notice. A small sticker somewhere would suffice if your state is a 2 party state.

The one that I want is this one. It has 2 cameras that swivel so one can face out and one can face in. Others here have recommended it so that’s how I found out about it. I don’t have it yet though unfortunately.

u/blublub36 · 3 pointsr/PublicFreakout

Installed this --->https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B07BFWNH82/ref=oh_aui_search_asin_title?ie=UTF8&psc=1

Installs right over your vehicle rear view mirror. Comes with a backup camera that you can install (optional) and continually records the rear and front cameras for almost 360 coverage. I got the mini-usb converter that plugs into fuse box to eliminate cord being visible. Only downside is that during the day, the glare on the mirror/screen makes it a tad difficult to see the video.

u/KoreanBard · 2 pointsr/Dallas
u/Sheilamainbattletank · 2 pointsr/dashcams

There are a few that are marketed as both dashcam and back up camera like this Toguard one. I don't know how good they are and generally would not trust the reviews, but may be worth a try. Worst case you return it.

u/nukii · 2 pointsr/Nexus5

Maybe this?

I think this style is a good option too if your only desire is to not have a big display in your dash.

edit: Haven't used either, don't even have a rear view camera. Just googled stuff.

u/ElonMesk · 2 pointsr/dashcams

I would also add the Toguard one to your list as I've seen that one mentioned on here before. Personally tho, I have zero experience with any of the strap on mirror dashcam/reverse cams. No idea how the work. Vantrue will probably give you better customer support if anything goes wrong, whereas the off brands usually have very little to none.

On the other hand, since the price difference is substantial you could order either one and if you don't like it Amazon has a great return policy. Just an idea.

u/x_____________ · 2 pointsr/Dashcam

There's not a big market for the rear view mirror mounted type dash cams. AUTO-VOX is probably going to have the best build quality out of all the ones currently for sale.

There are a ton of cheap ones out there, which is why you will see them on eBay for $12

I don't know of any that meet all your requirements. If you're set on wifi, I would go with the YI Mirror Dash Cam: https://www.amazon.com/YI-Dashboard-Recorder-Reverse-Recording/dp/B01CW4BI6G/

Here is a list of the higher quality mirror mounted dash cams currently on the market

u/ElisabelLollipops · 2 pointsr/Acura

I have a 2019 RDX, and I just installed my dash cam 2 weeks ago - it's been working super well.

I use this:

A larger rearview mirror is amazing, and having it sort of blend in, with everything I already have in the car is way better looking than a strange black box in the middle of the windshield.

u/ilikethefinerthings · 2 pointsr/Roadcam
u/MattRain101 · 2 pointsr/Lyft

I run a Falcon Zero F360, but use their provided USB plugin. I don't notice the camera or plugin at all. Ran the wire through my roofliner, side column and inside the dash, until I got to the USB port (only 6-8 inches of cord showing at the bottom and top)

(comes with a 3 USB plug in, so you dont loose a port.)

I got one on Amazon for about $75. Can't remember the name of it but the front camera is mounted in an over-sized rear view mirror that straps to the factory one, and the rear camera has a long cord you can run around to the main mirror unit. Plugs in with USB power and takes a micro SD card.

Could be this one?

I love this one. It plugs into your cigarette lighter and because it goes over your rear view mirror, you won't get an obstruction of view ticket from a cop if ever pulled over. It's also super easy to use and has two cameras (front facing and rear facing or you can both front facing) it uses an SD card and overwrites itself when it runs out of space so unless you want to save something off of it you never have to deal with the memory.
Edit: it also records audio, but you can turn that off if you sing in your car like me

u/Swedish_Chef_Bork_x3 · 2 pointsr/LosAngeles

I installed this guy on my car in under an hour a few months ago and couldn't be happier. It mounts over your existing rearview mirror, has a front and rear cam, and you can wire it to display the rear cam on screen whenever you put your car in reverse. Not bad at all for under $100.

u/OSUTechie · 2 pointsr/Dashcam

Yo compré la mía en Amazon: Falcon Zero F360

Con esta, lo único que tienes que hacer es clippearla encima de tu retrovisor, y conectar la vaina al encendedor. Super fácil de instalar y de mantener.

u/cjncjnnatj · 2 pointsr/cincinnati

I'm not necessarily going to say this is like the best option or anything, but I have this one and it works pretty well. I do have a couple qualms with it, but overall I'm happy with it for the price.

I mostly bought it for use as a back up camera, but I almost never use it while backing up because during the day time you mostly see the reflection of the mirror rather than the screen. But at night the screen works beautifully.

u/3600CCH6WRX · 2 pointsr/cars

I just got a cheap one like this one

It mounted on your rearview mirror. From outside, it doesn't look obvious that you have camera. The only downside is that it doesn't have GPS. So you can't track your speed. But other than that, it has perform really good.

u/FittyTheBone · 2 pointsr/ToyotaTacoma

It was a separate buy. I picked up this setup for my old Subie and switched everything into the Taco when I got it. The rear cam cable was super easy to run. I just popped one of the plugs under the driver side carpet, put it back in, then ziptied the line to the other electrical. Took about an hour to get everything right and the whole setup was ~$85. The only thing I need to do is adjust the rear cam location. The license plate light affects visibility at night. Other than that, no complaints!

First - Be sure to get a fast SD card else the recording pauses every time it saves a file (every 2 min has like a 7 sec delay before the next 2 min recording) This breaks up the continuous looping.

I have this.... its... meh (but cheap)

If i did it over again i would get this which has higher reviews

Thinking of upgrading to something like this though so it doesn't take up windshield space and so people don't think it weird that I have a dash cam.... it saves an explaination

Others have recommended some higher quality ones, but I've always been drawn to these cheapos that get the job done: https://www.amazon.com/AUKEY-Dashboard-Supercapacitor-Nighttime-Recording/dp/B072FGL63X/

Currently have this (best if you don't have a reverse cam): https://www.amazon.com/TOGUARD-Backup-Rearview-Waterproof-Reversing/dp/B07DGS11CM/ (though the reverse cam is a bit ugly on this one, you may find others that look better). But it records both forwards and backwards.

Also, if you get one without internal storage, I recommend getting an SD card made for constant recording, typically "high endurance" ones.

But whatever you get, get it ASAP.

No... That's the kind you strap on top of your existing rear-view mirror. I'm looking for a unit which replaces the rear view mirror in its entirety. Something like this: Backup Camera (this unit uses a custom plug, though, not standard RCA adapters.)

Yes, running the wires is the part I’m most worried about! This is the link of the dash cam I ordered: https://www.amazon.com/AUKEY-Touchscreen-Water-Resistant-Detection-G-Sensor/dp/B07Q3RF1GY

The only ones I can find clip to the mirror, that is not a good look in my opinion.

If I can't get a combo, I'll probably just get a stand alone mirror backup camera and then a minimalistic dashcam system.

So far, this is what I've found: Auto-Vox X1PRO, but the price is a bit much.

I like this one because it looks sleek, records front and rear, and there's nothing "noticeable" to tempt an annoying smash & grab.
It also works as a backup camera, though ymmv.

I have a mount that attaches to my rearview mirror: https://www.amazon.com/Pruveeo-Dash-Cam-Mirror-Mount/dp/B073QR5TZ8

It has probably every single possible combination of attachments, and holds securly, plus the camera is much less obtrusive.

Title: Can external software that shows Speed and GPS along with dashcam footage be used in court without a struggle?

Original Post:

> I'm thinking about buying this Dashcam -
> https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07H317VXD/ref=cm_sw_r_other_apa_i_wE3XDb93NZTY5
>
> The issue is that it only embeds the time and date on the footage. The dashcam includes this additional software called GZ Player, which shows the GPS information, as well as the miles per hour. You can only access this software via PC/Mac. If I were to fight a speeding ticket for example, would a judge not allow me to include this additional information? My thoughts are that a traditional thinking judge could think that the additional info could be tampered with. Or maybe she/he doesn't want to even look at other info aside from the footage itself. If that's the case, I just have footage with the time and date and would be pretty hard to fight a speed ticket.

You can get rearview mirrors with screens built in. My dad's truck has one and it is pretty cool. Something like this but only something like it. This is kinda cheapo. My car has a camera and screen in the radio but if your car doesn't have a screen, i think the rear view mirror option is the way to go. Looks good and is pretty functional.

Anyways, this one is close both in price and function of the one I bought. I was worried about people stealing the dash cam if they saw it so I thought maybe disguising it as just her mirror would keep her car safer. Hope that helps. :)

It's on the expensive side, but WELL worth it.

u/vale_fallacia · 1 pointr/Dashcam

Some friends and I just installed this cam in my car and it works pretty well. : https://smile.amazon.com/gp/product/B07L1N4W4Y/

Installation isn't easy for someone with limited mobility like me or you, so having someone else help is pretty mandatory. Maybe your boss or coworkers can help out? Although that depends on how you think such a request would be interpreted.

The backup camera wires into the reverse light so when you kick the car into reverse, it comes on and displays the backup lines. Unfortunately they don't move with the steering wheel, but it works well enough for me. I opted to put the camera on the inside of the rear windshield so I didn't have to try to route wires outside. The rest of the wires went into the interior panels pretty easily, via the rubber weatherstrips.

Price was OK - you immediately get $20 off, and sometimes Amazon has them on their daily sales, I got mine for around $70, plus a high endurance SD card. I didn't (yet) buy the GPS kit for speed logging.

Good Luck!

Here is what I ordered to replace my factory head unit:

-ATOTO A6 Pro Android head unit

-Metra 99-3012G-LC dash kit which replaced the MyLink one with a standard double DIN dash enclosure. It included (iirc) the wiring harness needed to connect to the factory harness.

-Metra 40-EU55 Antenna Adapter to retain AM/FM signal

-Rockford Fosgate Prime R165X3 6.5" speakers (to replace front and rear doors)Rockford Fosgate Prime R1T-S 1" Tweeters (to replace the front pillar tweeters)

-Keep in mind that Crutchfield sent me the door speaker mounts free with my purchase, so I'll include those as well.

To answer your question, I did not have any issues other than typical car audio wire routing stuff. For instance, the head unit comes with a mic that you can run, a GPS antenna, and a Wi-fi antenna. I found spots that worked for me and let the head unit sit correctly. Overall, it was a pretty easy install. The one thing that was a bit of a pain was that the double DIN replacement dash/stereo surround can be a pain to get to sit flush like the factory one. This could have caused by worn/bent/broken plastic clips or from the metal clips losing their tightness after I transferred them from the factory piece to the aftermarket piece.

As for what doesn't work:

-XM radio as this head unit isn't XM compatible, but I don't use XM anyway. You could always get an Onxy XM (or another brand) kit, but you'd have a separate device in the car that you'd have to operate XM off of (i.e. the ATOTO does not have a built-in XM tuner).

-Glove box AUX/USB port. That being said, the ATOTO A6 Pro model that I got has an AUX jack built into the face of the unit as well as a USB port. It also comes with another Quick Charge USB cable that I ran from the back of the unit, through my steering wheel column area, and below to my driver's seat. I can plug in my phone, a USB device with multimedia, etc. In other words, I have no need for the glove box AUX/USB jacks. Then again, I didn't use them before.

-Steering wheel controls (work in progress). Even when I did have them, I didn't use them much, so this isn't a big deal to me. If you would like to retain your stock steering wheel controls (Vol+,Vol-,Source select,Track+,Track-), then the easiest solution would be to get a Metra Axxess ASWC-1. Simple to install and will retain your factory wheel controls. ATOTO support told me that I can simply attach the Key#(+) and Key#(-) wires to wires coming from my ATOTO head unit to some wire(s) from the steering wheel/wiring harness and then program the wheel buttons on my head unit. They are a Japanese (I think?) company, so their English isn't superb and I am still working with them on getting more clear instructions on this.

-Backup camera. This is just something I haven't tackled yet, so I wouldn't say it is broken. Basically, I just need to find the backup camera wire and get it connected to my head unit. I have not gotten to it yet, but it should be interesting as it appears that the backup camera signal wire is integrated into the factory wiring harness. In other words, I am going to have to locate the wire and then find some way to attach it to my head unit so that it will output video. Plan on looking at that this weekend.

A note about the sound:

It took me a few hours to get used to the new sound of my Rockford Fosgate speakers. It isn't that the stock speakers were terrible, they were just a bit muddy in my opinion. The highs were decent, but the lows and the mids were pretty meh. The clarity I get from my aftermarket speakers is solid, and there is less distortion when I crank up the volume. My next project will be installing a separate amp for the door speakers to go along with the BOSS 1000w mono amp I have in the trunk compartment that powers my 10" JBL sub. Between the new head unit, the new speakers, and my sub in the back, they make driving and listening to music a lot more enjoyable.

That's it. Everything works great and I love this head unit. Great reviews on Amazon and as close to a full Android experience as you can get at the price point. Android Auto and CarPlay simply didn't provide enough functionality for me, so I didn't want to waste my money. My goal was to be able to download apps, view my home security cameras, watch YouTube/videos while driving, and have an Android familiar experience. So far, it is working out great.

***************** EDIT ****************

Here is the picture of the installation at completion: https://i.imgur.com/KgGYrzp.jpg

Yes, the right edge of the enclosure is rough. I am going to clean it up. That is my fault as I lost focus while using them dremel :)

Also:

1 - I decided to buy a rearview mirror dashcam and am going to run my own rear cam as well as it comes with it. I could splice a video component cable into the backup camera signal wire from the wiring harness, but I am just going to use the backup camera that was provided with my rearview mirror.2 - Steering wheel controls are also the same as backup camera. I just need to find what wire(s) on the wiring harness are for the steering wheel controls and connect them to the steering wheel control wires on the new head unit. EZPZ.

***************** EDIT #2 ****************

For the dashcam/backup camera, I purchased a TOGUARD rearview mirror with integrated dash cam ( https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B07DGS11CM/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o02_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1 ). I also purchased a Meknic SV-PC01 hardwire kit (basically, an add-a-circuit fuse kit) so that I could hardwire the new dash cam without having to rely on powering the unit through the cigarette lighter. I simply tapped into the cigarette lighter fuse in the driver side kickpanel and the dash cam is now being charged when the car is on or accessory power is on. This weekend I will run the wires for the new backup camera. The plan is to run the wires from the rear to the driver side kick panel, then I will route the backup camera wires and the charging cable for the dash cam through the pillars and along the top for a clean look.

That takes care of the backup camera. All that is left now is the steering wheel controls. I got another e-mail from ATOTO who said that I just need to connect the wires from the new head unit to steering wheel control wires in the factory harness. I am still trying to find out which wire(s) that may be.

I looked in the service manual I purchased a while back and I think I found the steering wheel control wires: https://imgur.com/a/bQoUYuk

I would highly recommend this one from [KDLinks.](https://smile.amazon.com/gp/product/B01L17EMP4/ref=oh_aui_search_detailpage?ie=UTF8&psc=1)

It has a front and rear camera, it goes over and replaces your rear-view mirror so it doesn't even look like you have a camera (so no need to hide it when you park), and the company was VERY fast to respond to issues and replace one of the cables when I found it was faulty many months later.

One thing of note for ANY dashcam you get, get a good high quality SD card for storage. I tried using the basic SanDisk that everyone uses, and for Dashcams it is terrible. Because the cameras constantly overwrite data, cheap cards gets corrupted quickly. When I switched over to a [Lexar high performance card](https://smile.amazon.com/gp/product/B012PLSFH6/ref=oh_aui_search_detailpage?ie=UTF8&psc=1) I have not had any more issues

I bought mine off Amazon for $200, and it secures over the rear view mirror, with a screen in the mirror piece that you can still see past, shoots in 1296p and 1080p has rear and front cameras, and plugs into the cigarette lighter. I originally was going to have my auto shop hide the wires, but because they weren't sure what they'd run into if they took apart the interior trim (seatbelts, airbags) the initial estimate was anywhere from a couple of hours to the whole day, and anywhere from $100 to $500 because of the labor and how many hours it could take to open up the interior (ceiling/trim/whatever it's called). Decided I was fine with the wires for the time being, then one night took it upon myself to try to do it and it only took me a couple hours - was really easy to push the wires into the edge of the ceiling where it meets the windshield, then around the side panels, and ran it under the dashmats and floor (secured the wires down with velcro) to the rear camera and the power in the center console. I understand that all depends on your vehicle and what kind of dash cam you get, but from my experience (2015 Nissan Sentra) I was able to knock it out in a couple hours.

Here's the one I purchased been happy ever since, I too was rear ended and had my car totalled, and decided especially driving here in Austin I both wanted and needed one.

The rear camera is routed to be close to the rear license plate on the outside of the car, so tint will not bother it. It also always records front and back, pretty good quality even in low light.
