Get a normal carry on bag. Buy a portable charger that you can use wherever you want. The end.

Recommendations for a functional “personal item” for flights? So something 9 x 10 x 17” or a little smaller, lightweight, preferably with some interior pockets, an exterior phone pocket, can be worn crossbody, and has a flap to slip over your luggage handle. I just got This one and it’s almost perfect, except there’s no exterior pocket - I need a phone pocket!

Preferably under $50ish, I’m not looking for anything too fancy. Thanks!

If you're going to be flying with it, then I highly suggest not using a softshell bag of any kind. Use a hard clamshell style case with two locking points and spinner style combo locks with different combos on each locking point.

Why? Because I used to travel for business around the world and up to 8 months out of every year and airport theft has been a huge problem for me.

I started out with softshell cases, as a young naive business traveler, with no locks and learned my lesson the hard way after a very expensive camera was stolen from the middle of my bag by airport employees on a trip to Dubai.

Then I got a softshell case with interlocking zippers and I put a key lock on the zippers. When I got back from a trip to Las Vegas, my bags were late, ended up on the next flight and an expensive gun scope was missing from my bag. It turns out that airport employees with less than exemplary character carry around keychains with keys for all of the different standard TSA luggage locks.

So I finally said "screw this" and got a rolling, hard clamshell case with a pull handle and built in metal reinforced locking loops on both ends. Then I locked those with rolling combo locks (not spinning). Since then, I've never had anything stolen from a bag again.

As for the interior, there are literally thousands of different solutions. You could get foam that a lot of us tabletop wargamers use and simply make cutouts for all of your deck boxes, playmats, dice bags and water bottles, so they won't get banged around in an airplane cargo hold.

The bag I bought is not in production anymore, but if I were to buy another today for use as you described, then I would buy this one:

https://www.amazon.com/Multi-size-Aluminum-Luggage-Suitcase-TravelKing/dp/B07H3S1L89?th=1

But, Chainsaw, that bag is almost $300! Yes, it is. It's probably also going to last longer than you will, and most likely it will be transporting hundreds or thousands of dollars worth of cards and gear that are very important to you, so don't skimp and buy some cheapo camera bag with a zipper. That kind of thing is for going from your house to to game store, not for traveling around the country or the world with your favorite hobby possessions.

I own an Everlane weekender, and I own this upright bag. In terms of appearance, the Everlane weekender is miles better. I think it actually looks 'cool' compared to the completely utilitarian upright bag. In terms of practicality and general use, it's the upright bag all the way.

I find the straps on the Everlane weekender to be a bit cumbersome (they keep sliding down). There's only one small pouch on the inside of the main compartment and one pocket on the outside, which is not nearly enough for the level of organization I desire. When totally full, it's just a little too long for the overhead compartment on the airplane too.

The upright bag is functional and durable, and it has lots of pockets, and it's expandable. I love it. If I'm just tossing a couple things in a bag, I'll use the Everlane weekender, but for any real trip, I use the upright bag. Plus, I decked mine out with these dinosaur luggage tags!

I've carried this bag onto multiple SW flights.

I highly recommend this brand of luggage. I have the carry-on above, and also bought their 25" version for a friend of mine. After destroying multiple cheap suitcases, I upgraded to good luggage 5 years ago. It was a really good decision financially. Don't let the price scare you off, good luggage pays for itself.

I love my samsonite carry on ! I've had this bag for 1.5 years and lugged it across a dozen airports and it still looks brand new. I'm on mobile so this link isn't pretty, but here ya go: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B013WFNNZI/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_x6PqzbSHKEY0K

u/itshotinjuly · 4 pointsr/sanfrancisco

Best decision I ever made was to buy a carry-on suitcase similar to this. Haven't checked a bag in over 5 years...

You guys are absolutely amazzing! I'm half tempted to try video thank you's if i wasn't so camera shy :) and I doubt I could look as fabulous as you too :/

Gift 1: so I kinda really need this.. I just started a new job and will be taking business trips every three months. I have to look ultra-professional and yet I have no luggage! If i had to leave right now...I would probably be taking my suits in my son's truck duffel bag :) There are three different choices on my wish list because I cant flippin decide. SO if you guys decided for me that would be super fantastic :)

Gift Two: C'mon...gimme anything of your choice!

And thanks again for the contest!

Idk about this bag specifically.. The one I have is this one- https://www.amazon.com/dp/B01HD1ZUA8/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_awdb_LnShAbHWDHFXY and it fits overhead

I travel nearly every week for work (consultant). Here's what I recommend...

For your budget (~$150), buy something from Travelpro. Either their Crew 10 or Crew 11 carry-ons. A spinner isn't necessary.

If you can expand your budget, or when you know for sure you're serious about traveling all the time, get something from Briggs & Riley. Lifetime warranty, and totally bulletproof. They are on sale every now and then -- you might be able to snag one off of Sierra Trading Post or something as well. Or you can get Tumi too, but they are a bit overpriced, and the warranty isn't as great.

Do NOT get a duffle. You will hate lugging it around the airport. Also, get a soft sided or expandable luggage if possible. Trust me on this... when you are at a client and need to bring back present for your SO or that extra pair of gym shoes, you will thank me.

PS: Unrelated travel tip, but if you constantly travel to the same location, its nice to bring a small duffle bag, stick items in that you don't want to take back and forth (gym clothes, larger size toiletries, protein powder, etc.) and leave it at the hotel.

u/betacrucis · 3 pointsr/onebag

So turns out my rollon is a Travelpro that some travelers have said slightly exceeds the dimensions airlines allow. It’s this one, weighs 7.2lb, bought when I was a maximalist n00b: Travelpro Luggage Crew 11 21" Carry-on Expandable Spinner w/Suiter and USB Port, Black https://www.amazon.com/dp/B01HD1ZYKE/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_i_LGvLDb0KDNNCK

My personal item is this bad boy: Hynes Eagle Water Ressistant... https://www.amazon.com/dp/B01MSLQ954?ref=ppx_pop_mob_ap_share

EDIT: I’ve never had a problem flying domestically with these items in the USA. And I doubt United will give me a hard time. Concerned about Alitalia though.

u/petit_avocat · 3 pointsr/femalefashionadvice

I have this samsonite carry-on and I really like it. It's tiny, light enough that I can fly cheap airlines without going over their stingy weight requirements, and it fits a ton for its size.

u/M1AF · 2 pointsr/sffpc

Bag.

I think it can count as a personal item since it fits under the seat in front of you. The bag is quite small, and it is a little difficult to take the case in and out of it.

u/speculates · 2 pointsr/onebag

I travel carry on only, but take two bags - a backpack and carry-on size roller luggage.

This is because all of my trips are for work, I'm required to take a laptop, and a larger backpack makes my back hurt. So, it's easier for me to take a smaller backpack and a small roller and not hurt my back while travelling.

For bags I have a AmazonBasics 18 Inch Softside roller and a Timbuk2 Division backpack. If it is a short trip (5 days or less) I can usually get by with just the backpack.

u/MyOpus · 2 pointsr/LuggageEnthusiast

I'm a bag junkie. After a lot of research last year, I picked this up for myself and another traveling friend of mine, great roller, great reviews.

I’d go with the tote! As you said, totes are more versatile outside the plane/train. I got the Dagne Dover Allyn tote this fall and like it so far, although canvas or nylon would be lighter and more weatherproof. But for the sake of my neck and shoulders, if I can’t fit everything in my backpack I’ll pack heavier stuff in a small rolling Samsonite underseater and stack the backpack or tote on top. It’s much more comfortable than carrying a bag, but still quite compact. Hope that helps! :)

Second for travelpro. I have one of there high end bags. And have traveled on southwest with it weekly for almost 3 years and it has held up great. My samsonite lasted just over a year with my abuse.

I'm trying to buy a Dakine roller bag (link below). However, the cost is substantially less than Dakine's website. Is it legit? I ask because the seller is listed as "by Dakine" which links back to a company page on Amazon. However, when I search the company page for this same sale I can't find, it doesn't link back. I'd also add that this particular page only has one customer review

After graduating from highschool a family friend bought me a suitcase (I believe it is an older version of this model).

I can't tell you how much mileage I've gotten out of the thing! (To and from school, and professional school, multiple vacations around the world, day and weekend trips). 21" is a great size as it works well as my second carry on item, and I can pack it full of cloths (I can fit roughly a weeks worth of cloths in that little bag). I've really abused it over the years and it is still in perfect condition. To this day, it one of my most useful presents I've ever gotten, and that was 8 years ago. Also, symbolically it was really the perfect gift upon leaving the "nest".

I am sure there are better models out today and recommend you ask the BIFL community (or search a previous posts on the subject) about which particular model you should get I would recommend a 21 inch Samsonite/American Tourister from my personal experience.

edit: If I were in the mood to buy a replacement this is probably what I would buy

(I say mood, because I am not sure if there will ever be a time I will need to replace the one I have considering how durable it has been)

u/Metabilities · 1 pointr/Random_Acts_Of_Amazon

I would do one of those semi rigid cloth covered suitcase sets... let's see if I can find one on Amazon. They have enough give to not be a pain and enough toughness to protect what's inside.

EDIT- something like this would be great because it's light but fits a lot of stuff, and also the color is cute and easy to spot.

u/newguy8908 · 1 pointr/travel

Thanks! I was looking for large bag. Let me know in case you have any specific ones.

I have been trying to find a good solution for packing my suit for work... but man... 200 bucks for a suit bag? From the reviews it seems great... until I saw this one:

>(2 Stars) I had several interviews recently and had to travel (Portland, Seattle, Raleigh, San Francisco). I packed my suit and 2 shirts inside the Henty Wingman, however, at each stop I had to completely re-iron my suit and shirt. And I'm not talking about just a couple wrinkles, I had to completely re-iron the shirt and steam my suit.

I would try it for 100... but 200 is too steep for what is essentially a backpack. I could probably roll up a suit bag in a Jan Sport for a forth of the price.

Can anyone recommend a good garment bag for carry on duty during air travel?

I've been looking at this one: https://www.amazon.com/Henty-Wingman-Suit-Bag-Blue/dp/B00BQTKQHQ/ref=cm_cr_arp_d_product_top?ie=UTF8&th=1

But I am looking for other options.

Any bag that can cut down on ironing/steaming is what I'm looking for.

u/trashpile · 1 pointr/malefashionadvice

A bike commuter friend of mine wears a suit daily and swears by this bag: https://www.amazon.com/Henty-Wingman-Two-Piece-Travel-Suit/dp/B00C8C3B86 and says he never has to deal with creases. Maybe overkill for suitless employees like me 'n' you, but an option available and also raises questions about packing form that the cube might not address

u/Jackal_545 · 1 pointr/Ducati

I usually keep a pair of dress shoes and belt in my office when I plan on riding for the week to cut down on packing everything.

As far as a tank or tail bag I’m sure you could find one that works especially since you’re not going far enough to really worry about wrinkling in your suit jacket. Maybe something like this: Tail Bag

They have garment bags that roll up like: Henty

I recently bought this under the seat Samsonite bag and love it. It's also affordable on a government salary. I have been thinking about the pros and cons of 1 vs 2 pieces of checked luggage.

Currently using a Tumi V3 spinner, but have previously used a Travelpro Crew series piece which I have seen on sale as low as $150.

Just got back from a trip and saw a dude with a Tumi Alpha 2 carry-on like this. I want one. But 400+ USD is way too much. Any recommendation for similar carry on? I like it because it can expand a lot (11 inches).

You've got it.

I actually user the Tumi T-Tech for both my laptop bag and luggage, but most have the above links.

u/vng10 · 1 pointr/churning

Not specific to points and cards, but travel in general.

What do people use for carry on luggage? Right now my fiancee and I use some really nice Eddie Bauer duffel bags but she wants to use rollers and I'm starting to realize I wouldn't mind wheels too.

What are you guys using that's been durable, yet reasonable in price ($50-150)? I've found this one but would like to compare with others.

Any body here have an opinion on the TravelPro Platinum Magna 2 21" Spinner carry on? I see all the recommendations for Tumi and B&R however they are simply too expensive for me. I am starting my first job out of college at a big4 next month. This carry on seems solid.

I bought two of these, one for my wife and one for me, for only $40 each a couple of years ago and they're still in great condition. We probably take around 15 trips a year, and always take these bags with us, so they've gotten plenty of use. We even managed three weeks in New Zealand with just these bags and backpacks for each of us.
