A wallet.

Ok, snark out of the way: You didn't really need to convert money to Yen ahead of time, much less what sounds like "all" the money you plan to use for your trip. When I went I just stopped at the first ATM I saw out of the terminal and took out money directly. Also there's plenty of ATMs around in 7-11s. But if your bank doesn't like that or whatever I understand.

That said: If you're worried about securing it get a night deposit bag like that. Steel braid reinforced with a locking zipper and just store what you're not going to use on a given day in that hidden in your room.

I would say don't bother with the Traveler's check at all. No one wants those things. You'll probably have trouble using them for anything. And your kinda SOL for what you don't use when you get back.

Also: How long are you staying there? If you're talking about trying to open a bank account then this probably isn't a short vacation, is it?

I generally bury my valuables (wallet, watch, etc.) deep in my bag before I get to the security line and then wait to go through the metal detector/scanner until my bag goes into the x-ray machine. That generally doesn't give anyone enough time to get into the bag before I'm through and waiting at the conveyor belt.

If that's not sufficient, I would think that placing your valuables in a locked night deposit bag and then placing that bag at the bottom of your regular bag with the key zipped into a separate pocket would make a successful theft almost impossible given the short time the bag is out of your possession.

I assume this is just for storage/docking, and you don't need to access the laptop during use? Depending on how heavy/thick your laptop is you might be able to get away with two strips of Z-flashing (or a heavier bracket like this) screwed to the bottom at the correct width for the device.

I've seen people walking from the car into the bank with the obvious bank bag and usually they carry $2000 or more. I think robbing a person would be easier.

TLDR: Metal coin with a recess on the back. You are supposed to place a folded paper wallet in there and cover it with a tamper-evident sticker. If the sticker is torn, you know someone looked at the paper.

Something like this might serve the same (but less fun) purpose: http://smile.amazon.com/MMF-Industries-2362010N06-12-Inch-Tamper-Evident/dp/B000J05F06

I built the whole system from basically nothing. When I started, they were using something like this except older, dirtier, and uglier.

I bought the silver version from Amazon with prime. Looks like it's still there. https://www.amazon.com/dp/B004NRF89Y/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_i_igH0CbXR3CYXX

Be sure to check third party sellers for prime eligibility

Use a locking document bag, like this or this. I often transport pistols in Husky document zip pouches, get 'em at Home Depot for less than $5, but I don't think they lock.

I agree. An attacker's possession of my wallet is unconcerning to me, except for the replacement cost of the wallet. I would add one thing to your setup: Tamper evident bags (https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B000J05F06/). That way you can feel better when returning to your safe deposit box that no one has seen those words.

That's why you store seeds in something like this:

No one can "peek" without you knowing.

Easiest goddamn thing. Get a vinyl money bag. Put all the cash in the bag, along with a spiral-bound notebook and a binder clip. Write "Flea Market" in big black letters on the notebook.

Each week, count all the money, and write the total, with the date, in the notebook. Take everything to the bank and deposit the money. Check the deposit receipt against the total you have written, and clip the receipt with binder clip. This will look to the teller (and actually be) entirely on the up-and-up.

Also, whenever you have an expense, write that in the notebook and keep that receipt. I'm actually not sure what would count as an expense besides Uber — most of the obvious ones like clothing and make-up are not deductible.

At the end of the year, total up all the weekly deposits and subtract the expenses, and declare that on your taxes under "Miscellaneous Income".

Now, while you have committed a lot of state misdemeanors, you have committed no state or Federal felonies, and you are square with the IRS and with the Controller of the Currency (which enforces banking laws) and everyone else except the local vice squad.
