Ami cat contains taurine

Why did you make a false statement without taking a few seconds to look this up?

u/AlternateMew · 5 pointsr/vegan

Yeah, I know. They actually do need nutrients found only in animal meat, unlike us. The one I know offhand is taurine.

But there are vegan cat foods.

To quote someone else:

> "It takes a little perspective to see that food really is made out of chemicals. It is reduce-able, and we can build it back up. And we can change it, and we can make it better.

I already admitted that feeding cats plant-based cat food is something you'd want to be careful with. Keep contact with the vet. Make sure their bloodwork is good. And if they for some reason can't be healthy on that food, then they need animal-based food and there's nothing that can really be done about that at this point.

u/rubix_redux · 5 pointsr/vegan

We have two cats who have been on Ami Cat for two years. We have had this OKed by two different vets. FWIW, one cat had a lifelong itchy-rash on his neck that went away after we began feeding him the vegan cat food. Correlation does not equal causation, but I thought it was interesting that it happened around the same time.

We have the means to purchase this food, so we do it. I'm sure there are cheaper ways. In the end, I don't want to kill other animals just because I want to keep the one in my house alive when I don't have to.

u/RazorbladeApple · 4 pointsr/RandomActsOfPetFood

I don't know how to say this without sounding too jerky, but I think you might want to add some foods that cost less (make sure they are Prime). Your listed foods are those that we feed our indoor pets & it's ok to feed our ferals high quality when we have the money to do that. I think by putting huge bags of Friskies on your list will only help the cause & keep your cats going. And I'd give to that cause! I have to save the pricey stuff for my cats, hope you understand & hope that helps!

Also, I feed my ferals this: Note it's cheaper than your listed brands, but 15lbs vs 5lb foods you listed

u/agent_of_entropy · 3 pointsr/cats

Read this. I bought the water fountain, feed her Instinct brand dry food (just got an Amazon subscription delivery today), got a 7 foot tall cat tower for her to lounge on and use Special Kitty Multiple Cat Scoopable Clumping Cat Litter, 40 lb (out of stock online, but should be available at your local store). I use about one bag of cat food every two months and one box of litter a month. The litter pan is the cheapest one available at Wal*Mart, around four bucks IIRC. My vet expenses have been nil on this kitteh. I did two rounds of ear mite treatments which cost around ten bucks when I first took her in, that's it.

u/MrHappysadfacee · 3 pointsr/AnimalsBeingJerks

Feeding your cat only dry food is fine, thousands upon thousands of people do it. We feed our cats one wet can a day, lunch time, and have a big bowl of dry food out all day for them to eat at their leisure (this only works if you have cats that dont gorge).

Right now for cost reasons we use kirkland brand dry food from costco. On a better budget we were using Taste of The wild dry food. Taste of the wild is made with zero grain, and grain in dry food is what makes it bad for cats in the first place. When looking for a dry food, just try to find grain-free, or little of it.

u/Tippytom · 3 pointsr/Pets

My Vet says any wet food is better than dry food.

as for Kitty Crack in terms of wet food, Meow Mix beef, poultry

When I got my girl she wouldn't eat any wet food, she would just lick it a few times then cry for food. now that I have three kitties I feed them Friskies (anything but pate)

u/david_edmeades · 3 pointsr/cats

I used this mix for my old cat. It has minerals so you don't have to grind bones, fish oil, and extra taurine just in case. You add meat of your cat's choice. Since you said that he likes liver, so I'd get the mix without and add fresh.

I currently have less time and less room to freeze raw food, so I've been getting this wet food that's 95% meat. Comes on Amazon Subscribe and Save, so nice 15% discount for that.

u/kleinePfoten · 3 pointsr/Random_Acts_Of_Amazon

Kitty food for Admiral Coolcat, $10 gift card to get me to $60 for headphones (to help me cope with SPD), and chemical exfoliating pads or this gel to clear up the cyst that's been in my cheek since about 8th grade...

You are so wonderful for hosting this, seriously. <3

u/Sukidoggy · 3 pointsr/Pets

Sometimes cats don't like when their whiskers touch the edge of the bowl, try feeding him out of a saucer or larger flat plate. You could also try microwaving it for a few seconds to get it smelling even more fragrant. There is also Fussie Cat which is a junkier type of food but it gets them eating. You could try mixing some in with his regular food.

u/hipatrothfuss · 2 pointsr/catcare

My cats go wild over Inaba Churu liquid treats. Pick up the syringes and feed her water angled at the side of her mouth (don't just shoot it directly in, there should be quick videos you can watch). Getting her water is more important than slight trauma but you can make it as non traumatic as possible - baby talk her the whole time, sort of sing song it as you're giving her the water, and don't give too much at once. Then follow up with a liquid treat or tuna if possible to reward her. Good luck!!

u/PJsAreComfy · 2 pointsr/Pets

Give her anything he likes. It's contrary to our goals of giving healthy foods but ultimately any food is better than no food.

Canned tuna, shrimp, fish, and stage 1 meat baby foods always tempted my CKD cat in a pinch. I sometimes pureed them in a blender with Fancy Feast; other times, I gave them as is, maybe minced and bound with an egg yolk if needed. When the situation was dire, I also gave liquid CliniCare and CatSure as a treat or blended with wet food boost calories. Pure bonito flakes are also like kitty crack and can be crushed on top of food or given directly.

Re the constipation: It was an ongoing challenge with my cat. If it's ongoing with yours, you might talk with your vet about mixing canned pure pumpkin puree (not pumpkin pie filling) to her food. A can costs a buck or two, it can be frozen in ice cube trays, and a teaspoon or so a day could work wonders. MiraLAX is another option but sticking with wet foods and trying pumpkin first is probably best.

u/critterwool · 2 pointsr/cats

A change of diet can make a huge difference. Buy the best quality salmon based food you can afford. Offer a good quality wet food also, or even some people canned salmon (the kind with the skin- cheaper than cat food) as treat but not complete diet.

Go for limited ingredients. I buy this food and it lasts my girl more than a month. Halo Grain Free Natural Dry Cat Food, Kitten Wild Salmon & Whitefish Recipe, 6-Pound Bag https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0748F39Y9/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_tai_AZUBCbSQJK949

u/Retroactive_Spider · 2 pointsr/pics

Yes. And in case you're wondering, this isn't even remotely funny. That cat is going to have serious health problems in just a few years... mostly in the kidneys and in the joints.

If you're interested in helping him, either switch completely to canned food or feed him this stuff. Get off the grocery store kibble.

u/[deleted] · 2 pointsr/cats

Try a different brand or texture? My cats only like minced. They'll barely touch paté or shredded. You should also look into treats like Churu Lickable Purée. Wet food is super important to a cat's diet and it helps stave off kidney failure which affects A LOT of cats who only eat kibble and will shorten their lifespan dramatically.

I think the most important thing on my wishlist right now is: Kitty food because I plan on getting a kitten soon, at least by my birthday, unless I get all the supplies I need before then, then I can get a kitten before then. If that makes any sense.

But I know that the kitty food isn't the cheapest, so, if I do win, anything on my wishlists would be nice, so yea. Thanks for the contest :D

u/salziger · 2 pointsr/Random_Acts_Of_Amazon

Happy anniversary!

Kitty crunchies would be cool. Thanks for the contest!

u/bookishgeek · 2 pointsr/Random_Acts_Of_Amazon

Some cat food. My cat eats grain-free, and a change will upset his little cat stomach an awful lot. But a recent unexpected bill has made it so hard to buy some, and I don't want him to ever go hungry. I'm portioning it out as best I can now, but it won't last long.

I'm almost out of cat litter even more than I am out of food, though. Either one, really. I'm Turking as fast as I can. God, I don't deserve to be a cat mom.

u/j00t · 2 pointsr/CatAdvice

If your kitty is getting more water from a fountain, then they don't necessarily need wet food. Just be sure to feed them a high-quality grain-free dry food and they'll be good to go.

Kitty snacks

u/furixx · 1 pointr/AskVet

I just went through this with my kitty with Lymphoma. I ordered this and this. I had to syringe feed mine in the end- just heat it up in the microwave for about 10 seconds, mix with a little water if needed, and suck it up into the syringe, then give a little at a time slowly into the side of their mouth (put some in, let them swallow and take a breath, repeat). You need to give a good 3-4 syringes full twice a day. You might also ask your vet about an e-tube.

We've been doing Core Wellness dry food on a subscription from Amazon the last few months. http://www.amazon.com/Wellness-Grain-Food-Original-Recipe/dp/B001BOVE54/ref=sr_1_2?s=pet-supplies&ie=UTF8&qid=1373340748&sr=1-2&keywords=grain+free+cat+food

Wag.com has some great coupons for first time orders, but after that we found amazon to be a better price (we have a prime membership for free shipping).

u/blonderengel · 1 pointr/cats

Definitely grain/gluten free; first ingredient some "real" meat/fish. I have several foods on rotation, to mix things up and to discourage foodsnobbishness. Right now, it's this:

tend to switch it up a bit, free feeding high quality dry and offering wet in the a.m.

Some of the dry food my monsters seem to like:

  1. Ferret math means you'll rarely have one animal. I'm not just saying this to be cute; ferrets are extremely social animals, and if you don't (or can't) provide them with regular interaction they will not be happy, healthy creatures. Please do consider a pair of ferrets; the upkeep isn't significantly greater and it will be a better experience for both animals. That all being said, the Ferret Nation Habitat is a very popular and sturdy cage for one or two animals. They also sell a dual-level model, and these can be expanded with additional units.
  2. You'll get a great deal of discussion about this. My personal preference is SwheatScoop unscented. It is a wheat-based clumping litter with low dust and, as a bonus, can be safely flushed down the toilet. Should you go looking at other options you'll want to be sure to avoid anything with perfumes/scents, and anything clay-based.
  3. My ferrets adore and thrive on Wellness CORE original formula. Don't balk at the price; it takes my three ferrets about about 4-6 weeks to go through a 12 lb bag so you're looking at about 33¢ per ferret per day. There are other options out there; avoid anything that isn't at least 35% meat-based protein, anything that has sugar or sweeteners, and anything that has grain or grain product as the primary ingredient.
  4. Treats are tricky as you don't want to give them anything that's patently unhealthy. In the past (before I knew better) I would give my ferrets Honey Nut Cheerios, peanut butter, raisins, and a bunch of other things. They loved it but it really wasn't healthy for them at all. Most ferrets like a squirt of Ferretone every now and then. Freeze-dried meats and jerky products are good, but again avoid things with added sugars and salt (honey and molasses finds its way into many pet jerky products). Once in awhile I'll slip my ferrets a little bit of cooked hamburger or roasted turkey but that's hit or miss. Remember: Ferrets are total carnivores!

Though you didn't ask, I'll volunteer: Be very careful when giving your ferret(s) toys to play with. Avoid anything made of foam, for example; chewed pieces can get caught in their intestinal tract and cause serious problems. For similar reasons, avoid anything that has pieces which can be chewed off (e.g., a plastic eye); anything with plastic bits (like ribbons); and all kinds of squeaky toys and things made of thin rubber. Good toys: Cardboard tubes and boxes. Ping-pong balls. Super Thru-Way. Cotton rope toys. Large towels. Small cotton unadorned stuffed animals.

I get my baby Natures Variety Instinct. It's a little expensive but it's really good for them (: I get him the Instincts raw boost dry food and also the wet food. Personally I feed my kitten wet food two to three times a day and leave the dry food out for him at all times.

Those are the amazon links btw, but i get his food at Petsmart.

I agree with others that you should take him to the vet and get him checked as cats don't show when they're in pain. Also, I suggest searching up on cats and seeing what they like, what they're supposed to eat, etc.

u/bbdoll · 1 pointr/Pets

awesome! and yeah, it really is surprisingly affordable especially with only one kitty. i narrowed it down a bit since you can order online, i would consider this, this, or this. come to think of it, i was able to successfully transition a carb addicted cat to blue buffalo easily enough. hope that helps a bit!

u/ElDoRado1239 · 1 pointr/vegan

Yeah, this. Plus it's not something new and experimental, this particular brand is there for some time and as you can see here, for example, people and their cats are quite happy about it. Some say they use it for years and the cats are healthy.

Thanks for the response! I have read that before on various posts made by others as well which is why I was transitioned from this cat food: natural instinct raw boost only this only in the mornings and wet food in the evenings.

It's tough having to do all that while getting ready for work in the morning a pure lazy thing I guess..I am going to start by giving them pure wet food on weekends! Any recommendations by the way? At the moment I'm feeding them this wet food

But I'm not sure if it the best? What is raw diet? Any recommendations?

The tower tracks is now in my amazon cart :)

Unfortunately the little dude cries nonstop until the balcony door is open. I'm going to look up how to make a catio and well..make one lol. I understand the danger as he's been over the ledge a few times and I live on the 5th floor apartment..Now I'm constantly outside whenever he is outside..although that can get annoying..

I really appreciate all of your advice and suggestions! Our vet was wanting an ultra sound to take a better look at what is exactly going on in her liver, that way we can treat it better. However ultra sounds are so expensive and we've exhausted quite a bit of money just to get this far with this diagnosis. I will definitely call my vet and ask her about the Denamarin. I'm looking at reviews and this looks like it could be amazing for Freya!

We've also been having to get her a diuretic pill or drain her of fluid about once a month since this has started. There's been some suggestiosn that ultimately it will come to putting her down, but I cannot bring her to do it when she doesn't seem like her... quality of life is going down. She still likes to eat, play, and purrs like crazy when cuddle time comes around. The biggest issue we've noticed is ocassional episodes that last for around 24 hours, where she starts drooling, gets extremely disoriented, needs to be reminded where her box is, and refuses to eat. The vet says this is part of her liver functioning issues.

Honestly, I'd likely have to switch her over to the wet form of the food. She's reached a point where she flat out refuses dry food and even has issues eating it. It seems like it's too much effort for her. She's much happier and eats much more if I give her wet food. Her favorite food is the wet Meow Mix cups that have a higher protein.

The vet tried to put her on the Hill's Prescription Hepatic Care wet diet but she upright refused it, even if it was a tiny spoonful mixed in with her normal food, and wouldn't eat for two days until I gave her back her Meow Mix. Considering how much weight she's lost (she's about 5 pounds) I didn't want to risk her not eating. They're now having us try Hill's Prescription Critical Care.

I mixed in a good table spoon with her Meow Mix today and she chowed it down like an absolute champ.

u/bluefoxicy · 1 pointr/cats

Okay, that makes sense. I was worried they were keeping themselves hungry to an unhealthy-degree. Like I said: if they're just eating less than they otherwise could, I'll get healthy but smaller cats, which is cool; if they're starving themselves in protest for wet food, I'll end up with sick and dying kittens.

I'm switching the dry food to high-protein adult food next week, too. It's more protein and less fat than the kitten food they're eating. That means lower caloric density, but they're not filling themselves up on kibble anyway, and the cat's only nursing when they pin her down. Fat's good, nutritious stuff, but it's not a nitrogen and sulfur source.

They do respond differently to different food. Maybe they'll like more protein better—or just salmon instead of chicken; you should see how they go after salmon-flavored dental treats (like 5 per kitten, 17 for the cat).

>"Proven" and "association" mean different things. There's no contradiction.

You assert something as fact. I don't care if you are only trying to insinuate that vegan cat food is unhealthy but somehow don't actually mean it. What you wrote, which is what I criticize, is that all vegan cat food is unhealthy but it's not proven. Besides the quantifier fallacy that is a clear contradiction.

> The first ingredient in Ami Cat is corn.

No, it's not.

http://www.amazon.com/AMI-CAT-VEGAN-FOOD/dp/B007ZOD95M

Corn Gluten is protein without fiber, which is a pretty big deal. These formulas matter because they want a particular amino acid composition.

Just got my cat's blood work back, and he's still got a clean bill of health. People still call me abusive for feeding my cat a plant-based diet fortified with all the micronutrients he needs to thrive because they'd rather I feed him dead chickens and fish.

u/bjwest · -1 pointsr/funny

Cats are not omnivores. Other than the occasional grass/herbs for medicine, they are 100% carnivore. If you're feeding your cat a food made with grains (99.9% of all dry, and a vast majority of canned), you are doing nothing but making them fat and sick. I have three cats, and an 11 pound bag of this grain free cat food lasts almost two months. I never let their bowls become empty, they eat all they need and don't overeat. They are slim, healthy and don't hack up hairballs/piles of food every other day like they used to.
