My dog got into a fight with my in-laws former pitt bull while they were pet-sitting for us, and she got a pretty nasty wound on her front leg. We went to a feed store and they recommended this spray. Spray the wound generously a few times a day, and it'll help. It's non-toxic, so if pups manages to lick, it won't cause problems.

By Jove, Sisters, I think you have nailed it!

I have been reading up about harvest mite allergy in cats and the time of year plus the symptoms match up entirely. The mites tend to go for areas with a thin coating of fur, such as ears (check), face (check), and paws (check).

The mites can cause severe itching in some animals, which leads them to scratching and biting the itchy bits. The scratching causes sore, crusty skin and bald patches. This is EXACTLY what she has done. The wounds she has caused by scratching are now wide open to infection.

I have just ordered this cream from Amazon and it has many good reviews for situations like mine:

https://www.amazon.co.uk/Denes-25013-Mite-Cream-100ml/dp/B000RXWHBA/ref=cm_cr_arp_d_product_top?ie=UTF8

This cream is supposed to soothe the itching so that the sore skin can heal quickly.

In the meantime, I have read that olive oil can help. It softens and moisturises the scabs and suffocates any lingering mites. I think I will use my herbal Hypercurium cream on her sore areas tomorrow just to see.

Sisters! Thank you so much for alerting me to the possible cause being harvest mites. I had not heard of them before. We really do learn something new everyday. I really hope this new knowledge can help her to heal naturally and save us an expensive trip to the vets. You clever thing, you! Seriously, I am so grateful for your advice. I'll update on progress and, hopefully, someone else will learn from it too.

My shih tsu, Frodo, had the same problem which my vet said was due to his seasonal allergies (itching, breaking the skin causing tiny sores which would then cause him to itch more and sores would get infected... a vicious cycle). I would get him a shot to control the itching twice a year and have temporary relief from the smell until the perpetual itching would start again.

It was my sister (who is a veterinarian) who was visiting one year who finally gave me the solution that worked. Frodo and our family suffered with his itching and his smell for over 8 years. He was not allowed on furniture or beds bc of the smell. His last 9 years were smell free & itch free, hallelujah! Her recommendation worked so well that he never needed to get the shots anymore.

My sister's recommendations:

supplement his diet with omega 3 capsules or oil

wash him with an antibacterial shampoo when he is itching to control sores getting infected (I use NaturVet Septiderm-V Skin Care... https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0006IC5QI?ref=ppx_pop_mob_ap_share )

after shampoo, rinse with a leave in conditioner (I use Epi-Soothe Cream... https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0056EAJZQ?ref=ppx_pop_mob_ap_share )

when not itching and for regular shampoo, use an oatmeal shampoo followed by the creme rinse

One of my huskies does this with his back left paw sometimes. The most important thing is to put a cone on them ASAP and keep it on. It sucks, but it will keep them from making it worse.

Then I make sure to spray it with Vetricyn, works great.

Some carpet may be too thin and rough if it's the super cheap kind. The plush carpets work better to reduce chances of sore hocks since the nails can also naturally push in.

I'm a fan of Vetericyn. https://smile.amazon.com/Vetericyn-Plus-Animal-Wound-Spray/dp/B00425DZTM/

razor burn could also be the issue. It usually happens when the clipper gets to short or when the dog isn't still. Bathing helps but sometimes is not enough. I have a poodle and sometimes the clipper gets a little to close. I use Vetericyn (https://www.amazon.com/Vetericyn-Plus-Animal-Wound-Spray/dp/B00425DZTM/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1543118358&sr=8-1&keywords=vetricin) for any sort of irritation after a hair cut.

Go to the vet! I also recommend ALL pet owners have this product on hand for scenarios like this... my local pet shop recommended a while back and it is amazing. Great for open wounds. Worth every penny.

Hope is not lost if you act quickly. Get some iodine which is super cheap and use it today. Clean around the outside. You'll have to buy some Vertricyn asap. You will need this and.you can even use it for yourself. Once you do the iodine spray on the Vetericyn and loosely cover with guaze. Give it a couple of days tepeating this cycle. A little baby aspirin will help with pain and inflammation. Follow milligram per pound rule. Do the iodine and spray combo at least 3 times a day. Not everyone can run off to a vet. I've done this with farm animals. Just be very diligent in keeping it clean.

I would certainly ask your vet first, but I always keep a bottle of Vetricyn around the house for when my kitties get into trouble and get cuts and bruises. It works well on small wounds animals get once in a while. I highly recommend it. It's like neosporin for animals.

I would also look into either tightening the cone or investing in a new type of cone. I own this soft KONG cone for my cat and she has not been able to pry it off, whereas some other cones I've owned she's been able to escape in the past.
