Yup herpes.

Also, if your cat has a lot of eye issues like watery discharge and stuff; give them lysine it does wonders!

I bought a huge bag of catnip a while back from Amazon I gave a few little bags of it to friends with cats and the rest I have been using for tea. It is not particularly tasty at first but after a while you get used to it and honey or sugar helps with the flavor. I drink it before bed, it has a nice calming and relaxing effect. From what I've heard from my friends it's the most potent catnip they've given to their cats.

Since everyone is asking for the sauce, it's similar to this: https://www.amazon.com/Delectables-Squeeze-Interactive-Wet-Treats/dp/B01KVUACDS?th=1

I feed my cats natures variety instinct raw boost dry cat food and rotate flavors and a bit of wellness core in case one gets recalled. Also, my cats eat fancy feast classic wet food. It has the appropriate amount of protein. It's also grain free. Many fancy grain free wet foods are 70% fat and 30% protein. Fancy feast classic has much higher protein. It's not the best wet food, but it's the one they will eat consistently. Plus they each get 6 oz a day each so it's 70 dollars a month just for the wet. My vet says they are the healthiest cats she's ever seen. I also brush their teeth ever other day. But I have ragdolls so it's easy to brush their teeth. Very docile.

The best wet food is tiki cat line of food. The sardines are great and so is the chicken. It's packed full of protein.

I also feed my cats raw freeze dried chicken hearts as a treat. They love them, go nuts for them. http://www.amazon.com/Fresh-Best-Freeze-Chicken-Treats/dp/B0036VE3V2/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1410048872&sr=8-1&keywords=Freeze+dried+raw+chicken+hearts

I recently adopted a kitty with feline herpes. My vet said that most kitties HAVE the virus in their bodies, the same way most humans have the human papilloma virus in their bodies - it just doesn't always "express"/flare up. Only about 20% of kitties will have flare-ups, and usually they aren't severe.

My vet recommended giving my cat lysine treats. He said it's similar to a human who gets cold sores (caused by, you guessed it, a herpes virus!). Lysine can help control/prevent flare-ups in kitties with the herpes virus. You can either buy lysine capsules meant for humans and stir it into canned food, or you can buy lysine treats. These are the ones my vet recommended:

https://www.amazon.com/VETOQUINOL-Enisyl-F-Lysine-Treats-Re-Closable/dp/B004U4P1RY

You'll want to give your cat the equivalent of around 250 mg of lysine/day. You actually probably want to give the treats/capsules to both Ernie and Barney, since, if Barney didn't carry the feline herpes virus before, he does now.

There's not much else you can do, but feline herpes virus is NOT fatal. Flare-ups are usually very mild and cause little pain/discomfort. Your kitties probably won't rack up huge vet bills from it. If you keep your kitties in good health/happiness, you probably will not see any bad "attacks" of the feline herpes virus.

Cats don't get cold sores, but the most common effects of a FHV flare-up are runny/watery eyes, sneezing, and congestion. You can help ease the discomfort of these symptoms by putting the cat in a room with a humidifier (or a bathroom with the shower running for a bit).

  • This is Thom. No birthday pictures, unfortunately, but there is one of him wearing pajamas, which is adorable! He loves looking outside! So for his last birthday, I opened the door whenever he meowed at it for a special treat. He also loves when I make the bed, so I put my sheets on a few times for him. And he was showered with treats and love all day!
  • I know "inbread" cats are old news now, but this picture still makes me laugh every time I see it. Yay bad puns and adorably ugly kitties!
  • Thom would love these!!! He can't get enough treats. We go through a ton of them. He's just such a good boy, I can't resist giving him one or two or twelve!
  • HAPPY BIRTHDAY WINSTON!
u/DinkaAnimalLover · 3 pointsr/Rabbits

Perhaps you haven't yet found the right food. Try some fresh herbs and some berries - generally bunnies love those. Try to determine what he loves for treats, maybe even try these https://www.amazon.com/Kaytee-Timothy-Biscuits-Baked-Apple/dp/B004TS2A9S. Shaking this bag always got my bun to run back to the pen.

Also pretend to be putting pellets into his food bowl in his pen, rattle it or even put a few in. Usually they rush back to that sound.

Do avoid picking him up though as much as you can. That hurts your relationship with him. Instead open the door and lure him in. If you must lure him into his carrier and then pick up in that and transport to the xpen in it. Anything you can do to avoid grabbing him will help.

Out of my 2 dogs and 2 cats, Mary Jane is my favorite. She has so much personality and is such a beautiful cat. I rescued her around 3 years ago and she shows her love by laying on your chest. One of her funniest quirks is that she will only drink fresh running water. It's super frustrating having a cat posted up next to the sink waiting for you to turn it on.

Here is a link to my imgur album containing more pics of my babies.

Here are some things on my amazon wish list for my pets.

That's my answer too. I know that humans have the ability and consciousness to control their mouths when eating, ie MANNERS, but animals do not have the same awareness of themselves, so it's excusable. I love feeding my cat a tube treat and hearing his little licks and smacks, but so help me gods, if I hear a human chew with too much saliva in their mouths I lose my cool.

These are so fun

edit: also all of this is already on my WL, i forgot to say that. EDIT: I stopped being lazy and came back and found the ones I was missing, so they're not on my WL but I specified that by each of them

1. Something grey I guess this is really silver... oops.

2. Reminiscent of the rain Not on my WL

3. Something food related that's unusual

4. Something for someone else - My girlfriend had a stroke last year and when she was in the hospital on all her medication she was telling me she wanted a Pooh Bear pillow pet and her grandma got her a "happy napper" in the shape of a bee or something and she spent days telling me she
needed a Pooh Bear pillow pet and I've looked everywhere for one for her since last July but I can't find one!

5. A book you need to read - This is the book A Christmas Story was kind of based on and that's my favorite Christmas movie because it's
hilarious.

6. Under $1
Not on my WL

7. Something related to cats

8. Something not useful but so beautiful I must have it

9. A movie everyone must watch - My best friend saw this a few years ago on TV and when she was telling me about it I thought it sounded so stupid but she made me come over and watch it anyway and it's seriously the funniest movie I've ever seen. Anyone who likes movies that are kind of stupid-funny absolutely needs to see it because I laugh so hard every single time.

10. Something that would be useful when zombies attack - An external charger in case your phone dies when you're not around somewhere you can plug it in when you're out fighting or hiding from zombies would be super important so you can stay in contact with people and make sure they're not turned into/being eaten by zombies

11. Something that has had an impact on your life - Highlighting things for school so I can find them later has been more helpful than listening during class. Except I go crazy and highlight the entire page.

12. An add-on item

13. Most expensive item - My explanation for this is the biggest "first world problem" in the universe, but oh well. I'm a college student and my current computer is a desktop so I can't take it to class with me or work on stuff before class in the student lounge and I can't lay in bed and watch Netflix and when I move across the country soon after graduation, I'm gonna have to pack it all up and move it with me and it's gonna take up so much space and it's just such a pain. Plus, this computer is getting kind of old and slow and it'll randomly just turn off and it's so annoying and I've tried everything to fix it and everything that people who have looked at it have told me haven't been able to help and I'd really rather just get a new computer because it would be so much easier for the future. Wow, that sounded so whiny.

14. Something bigger than a bread box

15. Something smaller than a golf ball

16. Something that smells wonderful

17. SFW toy

18. Something that would be helpful going back to school. - I have class 3 hours a day, 5 days a week and I get starving sitting there that long so I always try to take something with me to eat, but it's so annoying to try and find something to put it in or have it get crushed in the packaging and stuff.

19. Something related to your current obsession

20. Something so amazing you must see it - IT'S A BIG BOX OF GEL PENS, NOTHING IS COOLER! I remember when they sold them at the store by my grandma's when I was like 8 and they were like $2.79 each so I could never get any, when I finally could get them they weren't cool anymore but I still loved them.

BONUS - Something made in Oregon. *Not on my WL

I have animals have their own personalities. Every animal I've ever loved has been completely different from the others. I have had pets that have been very loving and cuddly, and others who have been very active and playful. I have pets who have been very protective and strong and others who have been more timid and scared.

Currently I have a bunny and cat. The bunny is not your typical bunny you see on TV. He doesn't want to be petted and isn't very cuddly. But loves to be chased and to play fetch with his treats. My cat is a weirdo who loves the idea of water. She watches it out of the faucet and watches the rain. But she hates to be wet. She fell into the bath tub the other day and freaked out. But 15 minutes later, she was on the edge of the tub trying to see the faucet again. Like I said, a weirdo.

I know you've tried Blue Buffalo brand treats, but did you try Blue Wilderness specifically? My cat has never taken treats when she was out in public on her harness, especially from other people, until a nice lady at a little family-run pet store gave us a bag of the Chicken & Turkey treats for free and hand fed her one. I've seen those at about every pet store I've been to, I think, but I know for a fact that they have them at PetSmart.

The ones in the tubes are great if you want to train him, cause you can just squeeze a little bit out on the tube and let him lick that off and it's about as quick as feeding kibble-like treats.

And I've only gotten these for my cat once while we were on vacation in North Carolina (the only place I've seen them) but she LOVED them soo much.

My baby girl is 11, we feed her wet food in the morning but she always has dry food available. Her old owners were quite neglectful so she has really bad teeth that make it hard to eat sometimes. When she's losing weight I give her this and she absolutely loves it, although I have to stand and watch her eat it or her brother will steal it!

u/MorleyDotes · 2 pointsr/BeforeNAfterAdoption

Good nutrition is very important to fur health. Feed him good food. Maybe supplement with Lisine. We have a six year old rescue that had bad fur and "hot spots". We got him on Hill Science Diet and started giving him the Lysine treats and he's a silky boy now.

Well, what I've found from this exercise is none of my wishlist items make a funny combination. The closest I could get was a food processor and cat treats. You know, cause I could use the food processor to blend the cat treats...yeah, okay, it's a dumb combo, but it's the funniest I could come up with haha. I challenge anyone else to do better with my wishlist :P

The strangest single item I need on my wishlist is this little guy. Somehow I lost my cheese grater, and this is a WAY COOLER one than I had!

Freeze dried meat of any kind. The current business favorite are these freeze dried minnows. My oldest would eat nothing but these if I let her! My youngest is past the age of taking new foods though and the only treats he'll eat are the crappy ones for dogs so I keep a separate kibble flavor on hand for him that function as treats!

And the good deed is.. I took my kitten to the vet and stopped at Taco Bell for lunch and the manager gave my little girl chicken and said how they recently rescued a kitten that got dumped into their dumpster! They named it Chalupa and one of the worked took it home!

I got her from a local no-kill shelter. :P

Silvervine, on the other hand, you can get from Amazon (example). I haven't found it for sale domestically, and most of what's online seems to be imported from Asia. It's a little pricey, but worth trying at least once. Jeane doesn't react to catnip at all, but goes nuts on silvervine.

u/coy__fish · 1 pointr/catcare

Hey, I've had quite a few cats, and several of them have experienced similar issues at one point or another. If finances allow, I would really recommend getting those blood tests and maybe an x-ray, since there are LOTS of issues that can lead to a cat avoiding eating (and ultimately developing liver problems), from a loose tooth to serious end-stage organ disease.

But if further diagnostic testing isn't possible (or doesn't tell you what's up), you're pretty much doing the same course of treatment I've done for several kitties, sometimes as palliative care, sometimes until they recovered completely. So if you decide to keep doing what you've been doing, here are some things I've learned along the way.

First, I wouldn't feed her less. It's hard as it is to get enough food into a syringe-fed cat. Instead, consider asking the vet to prescribe appetite stimulants or maybe anti-nausea pills, which shouldn't be too prohibitively expensive. You can ask them about over-the-counter meds that might work too.

As far as the bathroom troubles go, I'm wondering if the struggle is due to dehydration. You can sorta-kinda estimate if a cat is dehydrated by pinching the scruff at the back of their neck - if the skin doesn't snap back into place immediately, she's at least a bit dehydrated. You can try giving water via syringe, on its own or mixed with food. I'd double check with the vet on either of these, but you can also give her Pedialyte or do the subcutaneous fluids more frequently. I had one kitty who needed fluids almost daily to stay comfy at one point. (If you end up needing to do fluids long term you can buy them online, last time I checked Amazon had them in bulk cheaper than they were at the vet.)

There may be some things you can do to entice her into eating as well. I noticed you tried a couple kinds of cat food & baby food, which is a good start. Next try mixing in water to change the consistency, or spoon feeding it to her. I've had success with both. You can also try more fish-flavored foods, which tend to be smellier and more appetizing. Some specific products that have worked for me include cat milk, lickable treats like these especially in fishy varieties, and fish flakes added to any kind of food. I've had good luck with this brand of food as well.

You can try offering canned tuna, deli meat, or other smelly human foods. It'll smell super appealing and could help get her back in the habit of eating. But I'm not sure I'd advise it, since the sodium content isn't good for cats, especially if they're going through something like kidney failure.

Last but not least, try to stick to a regular-ish routine with the syringe feeding and anything else you're doing, and consider whether there are any recent changes in your life that could be bugging Lily. Cats can be so sensitive and easily thrown off, and it's not totally unheard of for a bit of stress to make a kitty hesitant to eat.

Lily is such a cutie, she looks just like my 11 year old girl who I just lost last December. I hope you two get through this and have many, many more happy years together. If you need any support or think of anything else you might need help with, let me know. Best of luck, and virtual hugs to you and Lily both.

I have a pet bunny. Her name is Bunny (looong story) and she is the best darn bunny in the world!

She's a Mini Lop and has the cutest floppity ears. She LOVES going outside and running around and just relaxing. When she's indoors she likes sitting on the hearth and watching TV with my family. Even at dinnertime, she'll follow us to the table and eat her own dinner in her special little dish on the ground. She's potty-trained (which she did on her own) and knows to go to bed when we tell her. She's basically a tiny little dog, hehe.

I love Bunny to pieces. :3 <3 I found these super cool apple treats on Amazon recently, and I bet she'd really like them! I've never seen in stores before, and I would love to surprise her with these treats and make her little day.

My friend's dog has this toy and he freaking loves it. It's fun to play tug-of-war or fetch with it, but also doggie likes to play with it himself, too. Just thrashing it about and chewin' on it and stuff. There's no stuffing, and there's multiple uses, so it sounds like it might be a good fit for you and your dog!

Thank you so much for hosting this contest! I love hearing about and seeing pictures of everyone's furry friends. =)

Man's best friend - Kitty treats! I have a chihuahua and two cats, I love to spoil them. :)

u/AlexTakeTwo · 1 pointr/cats

Interesting, mine are allergic to poultry and peas, and all the First Mate fish-based foods are safe. The canned foods are simple fish (plain tuna, or salmon) and the fish kibble just has fish, potatoes, and blueberries besides the supplements. I'm just hoping none of mine come up with a fish oil allergy!

As for the treats, fluffy kitty was willing to try or eat most of them, but my picky kitty would only eat the VitalCat ones, or the WildSide freeze dried salmon (which are the tiny samples you can't read the brand of.) Those are both pure freeze dried salmon, which is nice, but I still have to cut them into smaller sizes for picky kitty.

u/ksealz · 1 pointr/cats

Yeah it might be, poor thing. In my experience, managing the flair ups is pretty doable, I just feel so bad when they're stuffed up. I've used the following three brands - if you have a picky cat, the Vetoquinol Enisyl-F is the one all 3 of mine have consistently liked, and was given to us the first time by a vet. Problem is it tends to run more expensive than the others. I've also used the Vetriscience lysine treats, only word of warning are these are sort of big and 'chewy' so the two of my cats who like these prefer them broken down into smaller pieces. This last one I know I've used before, but I can't remember anything about it and I haven't kept using it. One of my cats is very picky though so that's probably why.

On top of what /u/UnrulySupervisor said make sure your treats are attractive enough. The small training treats that we use at home work perfect in that environment, but my dog is completely unresponsive to them if we're out and about. You'll have to try different things to find out what works, mine is really responsive to freeze-dried chicken hearts, he'll choose that (and therefore me) over anything going on around him which is really useful.

I'm sorry to hear about your Buddy, dear. I couldn't imagine the loss. I am so scared for my two little bears, it's just a feeling I can't toss.

This is nine year old Netti and her young friend Spaghetti, they are my heart and soul. They've brought me such joy by destroying their toys, but their playing can be hard to control.

So my item is this, it's a wonderful gift and may mellow my little bears out. Or it could not work and go in reverse, then they will just have to go without.

MewNeko. We are now selling silvervine sticks through Amazon. What is silvervine? It's a non-toxic vine, related to kiwi. The entire plant (vine, leaves, and fruit) causes a euphoric response in cats, just like catnip. It's known in Asian countries, but not so much in the US. We want to change that.

For the rest of the month we are having a buy 3 get 10% off promo.

Yup, pet store or Amazon--I wouldn't use human-type ones from the Asian market for fear that they'd have extra salt, though I do have The Tale Of The Spicy Squid Snack from my old cat...
