Here's an link to the guidebook, if you're interested.

Personally, I'll be staying far away.

Essentially, UHC is an HSA (health savings account) on the blockchain. You put money in your UHC wallet, and use it to pay for care when you need it. You can also "mine" for UHC by keeping fit and meeting health goals that you and your doc agree on.

On the surface that doesn't sound so bad. But it breaks down quick when you think about it for half a second.

The biggest problem: volatility. I would never, in a million years, risk putting my health care savings in an asset as volatile as cryptocurrencies. Health care spending is almost always very time-specific -- what happens if you need to get your gall-bladder removed, and UHC tanks by 40%? You're shit out of luck, in extreme pain, refreshing blockfolio every twenty seconds and praying for better market conditions so you can see a doctor.

Nor would health care providers be keen to accept a currency like that. Hospital margins are thin enough as it is. They can't afford to lose huge chunks off their bottom-line because, say, some rumors of South Korean crypto-bans makes the bottom fall out from under the market.

The success of UHC also depends on solving a very difficult "two network problem" -- enough potential patients have to enlist to make it look valuable to doctors, and enough doctors have to enlist to ensure patients they can get care through it. It's a chicken-and-egg issue, notoriously hard to solve. And considering that white-paper is calling for a minimum $200 / month commitment from patients, I have a hard time seeing how it will get traction with consumers.

Don't forget also that UHC is trying to wade into the single most heavily regulated industry in the world. Americans will remember the shit-show healthcare debate that happened last summer. Think the Federal government is likely to let UHC pass as a substitute for health insurance? What if congress passes a new version of the Individual Mandate? Or Medicare for All? Where will UHC be then?

Aside from all that, the white paper has some of the more amateur head-ass embarrassing things I've seen in the crypto-space. Buried in this 71-page behemoth:

  • 3+ pages of gushing about the cofounders' previous achievements. Very out of place in a white paper.

  • Whiffs of hyper-conservative politics. Craps all over people with chronic illnesses, fixates on government failures. Might as well give Ayn Rand an author credit. Fine if you have those beliefs -- but it's not professional to publish them.

  • No shit, it cites a Rush Limbaugh children's book series as evidence for over-taxation.

    Just...fucking weird.

I think there are much more promising dApps for NEO. I'd save your money for them.
u/cyberscythe · 16 pointsr/mylittlepony

First mentioned: during Luna Eclipsed in season two. He was basically a throwaway character name which Hasbro had the copyright to, and then M.A. Larson added "the bearded" because just Star Swirl wasn't funny enough.

He was mentioned again in It's About Time, which added the time-travel magic to him. Magic Mystery Cure added the thing where he created a spell and apparently was closely related to Celestia and Luna.

There's a lot of exposition about Star Swirl is in The Journal of the Two Sisters. He's a very powerful unicorn pony and has ties to the three pony tribes. He is a close advisor to Celestia and Luna and is tasked with raising the sun and moon, as well as tutoring Celestia and Luna.

There's also his appearance in the comics, but I'm afraid I haven't been keeping up with them.

An excellent post-read is the amazon reveiws

u/TPishek · 12 pointsr/mylittlepony

The book is called "Twilight Sparkle and the Crystal Heart Spell." You can see a summary on the wiki or in the reviews on that Amazon page.

u/Aidinthel · 11 pointsr/mylittlepony

The show itself never explains, but according to this book, Cadance was an orphan pegasus found in the forest and raised by an earth pony couple. She defeated an evil unicorn with her love powers and ended up in the same weird other dimension place that Twilight went when she became a princess, so Celestia brought her to Canterlot and adopted her as a niece.

You're an awesome parent for supporting your son's newfound hobby and making sure he can experience it in the cleanest manner possible. Hopefully we'll be able to be of some help.

> how old are most people on pony forums like this one?

The median is around college age, so mostly 21 and around. I'm towards the higher end at 24. Some of the people on this forum lean a little younger, between 16 and 21.

> there is a side of MLP fandom that isn't kid safe at all. Can you tell me: which websites are best avoided

As always, you should be present as much as possible whenever your son decides to browse the internet.

It's gonna be hard to filter, but my first and probably most helpful piece of advice is always to turn Google SafeSearch on for any computer he might use. It'll be on by default, but just make sure the checkbox is checked.

Official places will be your best bet, since your son can see all sorts of cool and curated pony stuff without potentially interacting with anyone dangerous.

Naturally, you can never go wrong with the official website (www.MyLittlePony.com), which has all sorts of fun games, coloring books, pictures, and videos. Since it's the official website, it's heavily curated by Hasbro staff, so you will be guaranteed to never see questionable content.

Netflix is definitely a safe place; every episode from seasons 1 to 4 is on there, as well as both of the movies. You could even make a dedicated "family time" where everyone watches an episode every night! It also has two documentaries, "A Brony Tale" (starring Applejack/Rainbow Dash's voice actress, Andrea Libman) and "Bronies: The Extremely Unexpected Adult Fans of My Little Pony" (starring the creator, the voice of Discord, and the voice of Twilight Sparkle), both of which will do an excellent job of introducing you to the fandom and all the cool stuff the bronies have done.

When it comes to fan content, however...

It will be hard for your son to interact with other My Little Pony fans over the internet, since most internet users are adults and will have fewer filters. I would be cautious allowing him access to sites where other fans congregate.

There are lots of cool videos on YouTube, but some of them might be vulgar or extremely bizarre, and YouTube doesn't do a very good job of hiding that content. I suggest looking up Pony on YouTube with a certain degree of caution... but you will find some really cool stuff there too.

Equestria Daily (http://www.equestriadaily.com) is a great place to find out news regarding the fandom and the show. It does not ever post mature content at all, but its comments sections are frequented by fans. As long as you keep him out of the comments section

Derpibooru (http://www.derpibooru.org) is a site that shares hundreds of thousands of MLP pictures and art made by fans. It has filters that you can set up so that your son never gets exposed to explicit content, including a TV-Y mode. These filters are on by default, so you can peruse it if you want to look at cool pictures with your son. I'd advise against letting him browse alone, however, since they're easy to turn off.

Fimfiction (http://www.fimfiction.net) is a site for fans to write and post fanfiction. It has a mature toggle that hides mature content, but unfortunately it's very easy to turn off. It'll best be browsed with parental supervision, or potentially not at all until your son is a teenager (which means he might not even be a fan of the show anymore by then).

If you want to try and keep your son off the internet...

The official comics are fantastic from both a story and art perspective, and they will keep your son (and you and your husband too!) very entertained.

There are also chapter books that will help your son learn to read. Many are offered at various reading levels, so you can gradually wean your son on bigger and more complex books over time.

There's also an official My Little Pony game for Android, iPhone/iPod/iPad, and Windows Phone, and all sorts of official audiobooks that your son can read along with as well. Since they offer no social features, there's no possible way for your son to interact with anyone dangerous.

Hopefully that's a good enough summary! If I can think of anything else, I'll let you know! Good luck, and have fun ponying-out with your son!

You have to read the Amazon reviews. Hilarious.

What I find even more interesting is how it became the government it is now.

According to the semi-canon Journal of the Two Sisters, when it started Equestria was either an alliance or confederacy of the three pony tribes. The rulers voted Celestia and Luna to "princesshood", and they were tasked to perform the following:

  1. Mediate conflicts between the three tribes

  2. Act as ambassadors to foreign nations on behalf of the three tribes

  3. Protect them from external threats like dragons

Now it's a more centralized government. Over a millennium, Celestia took executive power as the three races became more and more assimilated with each other and the tribes lost their political power. She was pretty nice, allowing descendants of royalty/aristocracy from the three tribes to keep their titles like Prince Blueblood.

Just in case anyone wants to know where they can buy it, Amazon has it. I learned a few new things about the show that wasn't even mentioned in the show (like the names of the Wonderbolts [one of them is Surprise!] and that the first two episodes were originally going to span across a whole season.) The book is about 1/2 episode recaps, but it gives some great insight on the show (such as why they only redeem a few villains or why the people may enjoy the show.) I'd recommend buying it if you have money to kill.

Oh, and soon, two more books are going to come out.

My Little Pony: The Journal of the Two Sisters: The Official Chronicles of Princesses Celestia and Luna

My Little Pony: The Daring Do Adventure Collection: A Three-Book Boxed Set with Exclusive Figure

u/gbeaudette · 6 pointsr/mylittlepony

Well, that's pretty... unambiguous.

You could go something simple like a Funko doll Or maybe a keychain. (I honestly kinda want this one for myself.)

There's a new comics omnibus coming out in a week or so if he also likes comics.

Or, and this is a bit of a gamble, but Rainbow Rocks comes out in two weeks.

u/Valinye · 5 pointsr/mylittlepony

Read "The Journal of the Two Sisters": http://www.amazon.com/Little-Pony-Chronicles-Princesses-Friendship/dp/0316282243 - apparently there is an entire race of Alicorns that Celestia and Luna are a part of.

Given the book, I tend to think of the 'true' Alicorns as being a bit like Tolkien's "Istar"; Gandalf, Sauruman, et al.

u/lukjad007 · 5 pointsr/MLPLounge

I bought this book a while back. I didn't like it because of the reasons I posted in my review, but it is a decent sized book and sounds like something you could use.

$2+shipping. Does that sound fair? I'll ship by Canada Post, with or without tracking.

The Magic Horse of Han Gan -- Painted horse comes to life.

The Midnight Circus -- Mechanical horse comes to life.

Moonhorse -- Just beautiful illustrations of a magical horse visit.

The Carousel -- Merry-go-round horses come to life.

Silver Pony -- All pictures, no words -- a boy's dream world turns real with a magical horse.

The Mud Pony -- American Indian boy's mud pony comes to life.

Yup!

Amazon Link that NoobJr put elsewhere in the thread

It's super-neato and has a bunch of great head-canon fuel. Also, have a shameless plug for a review I made of it a while ago

u/sambaneko · 5 pointsr/mylittlepony

I guess it depends on whether or not you take this book as canon material. It has some backstory on Cadance, explaining that she was previously a pegasus. So, while we still haven't seen an explicit earth pony to alicorn transformation, being a magic-wielding unicorn is apparently not required.

The book also specifically describes alicorns as being a combination of all three pony types.

u/HalfBurntToast · 4 pointsr/mylittlepony

Yes! I was really happy to hear more lore behind the show. Fun stuff. I hope the new MLP hardcover is as good as it looks like it could be. I'd kill for some more back story on the princesses!

u/kdlp313 · 3 pointsr/mylittlepony

I'd always assumed that the royal sisters' design was meant to reflect their advanced age and status. In a thousand years, I'd expect Princesses Cadance and Twilight to have acquired a similar manestyle.

I suppose it could simply be the result of advanced age, however I'd like to think magical ability has something to do with it too. But of course, this is all exclusive to alicorns, as no other pony can expect to live as long.

As to why the sisters are princesses and not queens, my understanding is that Celestia and Luna declined the honour because they saw themselves less as rulers, and more as guardians of Equestria.

You might want to take a look at a book called The Journal of the Two Sisters It explains a bit of Celestia's and Luna's backstory.

u/DarthSatoris · 3 pointsr/funny

Seconding The Enchanted Forest Chronicles all the way.

Animorphs by K.A. Applegate. About 5 kids - 2 girls and 3 boys - who end up as our last line of defense in an alien war. They're granted the ability to turn into any animal they touch. 50+ books in the series.

Mustang, Wild Spirit of the West by Marguerite Henry. I was horse crazy as a kid, and all her books are great, but this is the only one of Henry's that jumps out as having a (human) female protagonist.

Daughter of the Mountains by Lousie Rankin. About a little girl who finally gets the rare dog she's always wanted, how he's stolen, and how she chases the thieves through the Himalayas into India to get him back.

The Thoroughbred Series by Joanna Campbell. Not so much on the mystery/fantasy, but an interesting female protagonist, and apparently there are now 50+ books in this series as well.

u/Koriandersalamander · 3 pointsr/UnresolvedMysteries

Amazon will let literally anyone self-publish and (try to) sell pretty much anything. Gonna go with the crowd here and suggest this dude is rocking some serious unmedicated schizophrenia, the paranoia + word salad rambling is kind of a dead giveaway. Alas for the fall of geocities, I guess?

Edit to add: alternatively, if it's not due to setting the prices himself (hard to believe, but hear me out for a second) it's because someone has already discovered the guy's work and appreciates it as the profoundly unique piece of outsider art that it very well could be. For example- have you heard of Latawnya the Naughty Horse? (Bonus dramatic reading of same; there are many, many more.)

u/Color_blinded · 3 pointsr/mylittlepony

but that's not the first official book. This is. Though I think the book you linked still talks about Cadence being a pegasus.

u/TwilightShadow1 · 3 pointsr/mylittlepony

Unless things have changed recently after the clarification attempt by Big Jim, the comics are considered a secondary canon, and the chapter books are the tertiary canon. So if they ever contradict each other, the comics are more canon than the books, and the show is more canon than the comics.

The only possible exception to this rule is The Journal of The Two Sisters since it's supposed to be something directly from the show, but I'm not entirely sure where it exists in the order of canon.

Can we please get a walk thru on how to get the kindle version for 99 cents that we can then add on the Audible?

If I go here, it lets me buy kindle for 99 cents but there's no option to add the audible version.

If I go here, I can pay 6.99 for the Kindle version which lets me add on the Audible one. I see mention of the Matchbook version for 99 cents, but as far as I can tell, that's paying 99 cents after buying the print edition

u/ExpectDeer · 3 pointsr/Fantasy

Congrats on your daughter! I have a nine year old myself and she loves fantasy and books in general.

I started her young with picture books of which there are fabulous ones with strong female characters.

Rosie Revere, Engineer - not fantasy per se, but the females are empowering. There's a whole series of books about girls in STEM roles from the same authors.

Interstellar Cinderella - Cinderella is a rocket engineer who fixes the prince's ship. She also declines his invitation to marry because she only just met him.

The Princess and the Pony tired of getting sweaters for her birthday, she asks for a real WARRIOR horse and instead gets a chubby little pony. She enters the annual brawl anyways. Endearing, funny, and pokes fun at gender stereotyping.

And for when she's a bit older and can sit still to listen for longer stretches, The Secret World of Og is a great read.

>The series follows the five Berton children, Penny, Pamela, Peter, Patsy, and baby Paul (better-known as “The Pollywog”) as they discover and explore a vast, mysterious world of caverns and rivers hidden beneath a trapdoor in the floor of their clubhouse.

The female characters are strong, unique, and self-sufficient. Not to mention it's a clever and well-written story!

Anyways, I have more I could suggest but you're already under a pile of excellent suggestions. Congrats again!

My niece is in fourth grade. She is awesome. She wants to love reading I can tell. But so far nothing has grabbed her. First things to be available is volume one and volume two.

But if your also interested the Micro-series is going to be released in November.

u/AcceptablePariahdom · 2 pointsr/mylittlepony

Haven't gotten a chance to read it myself, but if you're a real big fan of Cadance (judging by your username, I assume that you are), it sounds like you need to get ahold of Twilight Sparkle and the Crystal Heart Spell, in which Cadance tells Twilight the story of her foalhood and how she ascended. AFAIK it's the biggest chunk of mostly-canon Cadance background we have.

u/WillfulAbyss · 2 pointsr/FireEmblemHeroes

No, see, it is the same horse. It's simply mastered the abilities of speech and time travel, just like Rush Limbaugh's horse.

u/NoobJr · 2 pointsr/mylittlepony

You're probably looking for this.

The pilot doesn't explain itself too well in that regard. The NMM story is portrayed as a fairy tale there, which leads to some confusion, when later on it's treated like a historical event (Testing, Testing, 1, 2, 3).

Maybe Ponyville is historically illiterate. But that doesn't explain Twilight not knowing anything. Oh, well.

u/TheRandomRock · 1 pointr/mylittlepony

Why is it only 10.82$ Canadian to pre-order and why is the release date june 10.

Cowabunga!

I understand that it is used! My favorite book is Riding Freedom. My mom would read it to me when I was little. She read it to me in Spanish though!!!

I am a college student and I live with other students and my boyfriend. I am done with college after next quarter and one of my housemates is barely going into her 2nd year of college. I call her and her boyfriend the babies of the house. She wanted to make breakfast for dinner and asked if I wanted pancakes, and that she was going to go to the store to buy the stuff. She recently lost her wallet and phone, and has been eating cup of noodles and pop tarts. I told her not to buy anything because I have potatoes, pancake mix, organic maple syrup, bacon and eggs. I gave her all of the ingredients and she made her breakfast for dinner while I washed all of the dishes. We all ate pancakes, hash browns, bacon, and eggs at 11 pm. It was so much fun.

u/yaybiology · 1 pointr/Teachers

I second the Tamora Pierce suggestion. Also definitely Gregor the Overlander! Suzanne Collin's lesser known series (she wrote Hunger Games). I recently finished reading (it's a 5-book series) and it was FANTASTIC. Just amazing. It's a YA series. The House of the Scorpion is also great, might be for your stronger readers. Eragon series is fun, and Dealing with Dragons is still one of my all-time favorite dragon books/series. Bruce Coville is a great author, and his work might be a little young but it's good to have a mix. I absolutely loved everything of his I have read, but especially Aliens Ate My Homework and the rest of that series. Most of these will appeal to the young men, hopefully.

When I was a young lady, I read pretty much anything, but I know a lot of boys like books with a boy main character. I really was a bit horse crazy, so here's some you might look into for your young ladies. The Saddle Club is a very long series about 3 girls and their horse-y adventures. It was really fun and it's great to find longer series because, if they like the first one, there's a lot to enjoy. (Oh a thought - you could always get the first one in a series, then just tell them to get the rest from the library or something, if there's budget concerns) I also liked the Thoroughbred Series and the wonderful Marguerite Henry horse books, especially the famous Misty of Chincoteague but really any of her books is a good read. My all time favorite horse series was and still is The Black Stallion by Walter Farley. Oh, how I loved that book.

There's a Boy in the Girl's Bathroom was fantastic the first time I read it, and I also like the "Wayside School" books which are both by Louis Sachar. Judy Blume is fun as is Beverly Cleary. Redwall gets a lot of kids into reading, you also might consider some high-level comics/graphic novels to reach a different audience. The Hobbit Graphic Novel has great illustration and I loved reading it so much when I found it one day in a store.

I found history pretty boring so avoided those books but I did enjoy The King's Swift Rider about Robert the Bruce and Scotland, might be the only vaguely historical book I remember reading around those ages. I tried to avoid mystery books more or less, but I loved Encyclopedia Brown (even though according to Amazon it's for younger ages). I enjoyed Harriet the Spy she was a pretty cool girl role-model at the time. My Side of the Mountain was absolutely fantastic and such a great adventure, though I enjoy everything Jean Craigshead George writes. I feel like Julie of the Wolves is pretty standard reading material, maybe not anymore, but what a great story. Oh my gosh, I just about forgot The Indian in the Cupboard, that was such a good story. Anything Roald Dahl is wonderful as is Jane Yolen, I especially recommend the Pit Dragon trilogy. The Golden Compass, So You Want to be A Wizard, Animorphs, Goosebumps, Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark, Kiki Strike, Dinotopia, Song of the Gargoyle and The City of Ember.

I am sure that is way more than you need, but my mind started racing. It was hard to stop once I started -- thank you for that enjoyable tour through my past. Lots of great memories of time spent reading. Hope you find some of this helpful, at least.

We had similar book lists in Texas. One of our books one year was Riding Freedom. I don't remember if a cat dies in the book, but the cover matches your description, and the main character is named Charlotte. For some really general recommendations, there's the Art of Equestria book, the 4DE plushies or maybe one of the comics omnibus?

Then again, if he's really into the fandom and makes his own plushies, he may have all these things. Do you know if he has a favourite pony?

I only mentioned thoughtful because that's my gift giving preference.

u/Toezap · 1 pointr/books

Hmm...books I liked as a kid...well, apparently they tended to involve animals, and mostly realistically drawn ones. Here's a few:

Good Dog, Carl.

Stellaluna.

The Girl Who Loved Wild Horses.

Fritz and the Beautiful Horses. I liked horses, what can I say.

How to Hide an Octopus. This one is fun because it shows you each animal and then you have to find it camouflaged in the environment. Very colorful, light on words, if I remember correctly.

The Story of Jumping Mouse. This one had just the slightest amount of creepy. But it was just the right amount I could handle, and it made the book kind of intriguing? I believe it's based on a Native American folk story.

u/calmbrony · 1 pointr/mylittlepony

Physical copies look better imo. The colors are nicer. I you are willing to wait, get the Trade Paperbacks!

Volume 1 (Chrysalis Arc, which is awesome) is out here.

Volume 2 (Nightmare arc, personaly didn't like as much) will be out Sept. 24 here.

There will also be a compilation of the mane 6 micro series in November here.
The Rarity and the Pinkie comic were both top notch, while the others varied from good to mediocre (depending who you ask). But it is a good price for 6 comics!

Issue 9 was great, Volume 3 is looking like it will be awesome (no date yet for that one).

Being an entertainer is a hard time, "you care about what people think of you, even if you don't show it."

Thankfully he cleaned up and he's really great now. A couple of updates if you haven't followed him recently: He's married, his wife runs a Tea Company (Two if by Tea), he's written two books (Rush Revere...) and he has two cochlear implants (because he lost hearing awhile back).
