I am glad you are interested in Socrates.

I haven't read the book you mention, but from what you describe, it does not seem like a scholarly monograph. (I found this Amazon review that echoes many of your concerns.) I also looked through the archives of the Bryn Mawr Classical Review and could find no review.

If you want a lively and philosophically interesting Socrates, I highly suggest Vlastos' famous book Socrates Ironist and Moral Philosopher (Amazon link). It is a controversial and technical book, but well worth reading.

Another good place to look for various takes on Socrates as a philosopher is the Cambridge Companion to Socrates (Amazon link).

Good luck!

PS: e.g. I was thinking of getting one or both of the following by Ian Worthington which while nominally 'biographies' feel like they might give me a sense of the overall sweep of history for the period (former has bonus of general interestingness of Athens and Athenian politics, latter presumably more detailed from a military organisation perspective)
