One of those foldable metal clipboards are helpful to keep everything together. I keep all my PHI on easily throw-away-able pieces of paper in the clipboard, and then a separate small notebook for notes I have on diseases, treatments, things to look up for the next day etc.

That way its just Clipboard for PHI crap, Notebook for Stuff to Learn.
What I need help with is how to organize my PHI half-sheets. Some residents have beautifully organized half sheets on their pts.. mine are always kinda scattered.

A tiny bit over your budget, but one of these things are invaluable to paramedics/EMTs/cops.

I was a cop and a paramedic a few years back and it was my most treasured item on the raod.

Edit: I just noticed that the one I linked was only 6x10 so you don't want to get that one. The 9x12 is the one that you'd want to get, but that is $19.99 so it may be too spendy for ya.

u/Heplayer92 · 7 pointsr/medicalschool

Personally I've always wanted one of these: https://smile.amazon.com/Whitecoat-MedInfo-Clipboard-Medical-Black/dp/B00C2EG826/ref=sr_1_3?ie=UTF8&qid=1525306865&sr=8-3&keywords=clipboard+medical

Also a nice set of pens like https://www.amazon.com/Pilot-Retractable-Premium-Roller-Dozen/dp/B001E6D3W6/ref=sr_1_5?ie=UTF8&qid=1525306908&sr=8-5&keywords=gel+pens will be clutch and they're on sale right now too!

Besides that, just lend an ear when she needs to rant after a long day. Prepare meals for her. Take her on dates. And don't get upset when she's working long days and has to come home and study. But honestly if y'all made it past M2, you're probably in the clear in terms of understanding her busy hours.

You the real MVP

Always be working. I carried all of my homework in an aluminum clipboard and every time I had down time I'd do homework or work on it. Even if it was just the boring part of filling in required information.

u/happyeggplant_ · 5 pointsr/nursing

I see lots of students and experienced nurses alike using these clipboards or similar designs.

Compression stockings are super nice, and come in cute designs. They help with foot/leg pain because we're on our feet a lot.

For a new student, a study essentials kit is a very kind gift. Notecards, post its, pens, highlighters, notes of encouragement, favorite snacks. You can DIY this to be very tailored to her.

Lastly, nursing school is tough, and mentally taxing. The best gift you can give is your support. Cute idea is an IOU book of things like a movie date, back rub, 1 hour of study help, etc etc. Just a sweet way to show your support. It's very nice of you to want to find her something to make school better for her, I hope she does well!

A clipboard is a great idea. One like this would be even better.

I like the clipboards with internal storage so I don't have to worry about rain on my papers.

This is the one I use: Here.

Honestly, I like all the features it has; I can even keep a little whiteboard inside of it for diagramming things. I just kind of wish it had a little clip at the bottom to hold the bottom and top of papers since it gets kind of windy in the midwest and my papers fly all over the place.

A closed CF-18 will survive a lot of things, and there's no shortage of videos showing them being dragged behind a car, thrown out windows, and so on. But if the laptop's open, the screen is vulnerable.

My cousin is a police officer and says their Toughbooks' biggest nemesis is the aluminum clipboard officers work with. When clipboard hits screen, screen never wins.

This is pretty helpful and I use it in acute and inpatient settings.
(But to be honest, it was a lot cheaper when I got it a few years ago.)
Edit: autocorrect correction and I can't spell.

What I started with: Stethoscope, sphygmomanometer or a sphygmomanometer for the lazy, pulse oximeter, reflex hammer, tuning fork, a pen light, notebook, Maxwell, pocket medicine, clipboard, 48 pens (of which I somehow only have 2 left), and finally a pack of decoy pens to hand out to people that need to "borrow" a pen but never give back.

Seriously where do all of my pens go??? It turns out half them went into my gf's bag x(.

What I was given or picked up along the way: scalpel, needle drivers, tweezers, scissors, various types of vicryl, bandages, gauze, alcohol wipes, surgical lube (that I took from the hospital when no one was looking ;) ), and a pocket CPR mask. I took a bunch of normal saline and IV kits as well but they don't fit in the bag.

u/hotspots_thanks · 3 pointsr/nursing

My boyfriend got me this folding clipboard when I went back to school.

I have used it every single day of work to hold papers and notes. When I fold it up, it fits perfectly in my scrub jacket pocket. It's the most practical gift I've ever received.

u/jinx614 · 3 pointsr/nursing

I use this great beast of a clipboard:
http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B002MCZA0Y?psc=1&redirect=true&ref_=oh_aui_detailpage_o01_s00
I keep my report sheets, saline flushes, alcohol pads, stethoscope, port caps, pens, highlighter, penlight, dry erase marker, cell phone, clamps, 2x2s, disposable thermometers, and tape in it, with room to spare. Also a few dollar bills in case I can run to the vending machine. I carry all the crap with me because our unit is huge, with one nurses station. Everyone gets private rooms, but it also means we are more spread out.

u/Karen8172 · 3 pointsr/OccupationalTherapy

They make a clipboard that is a cheat sheet and then you could add post it notes to that!

There are no 3D printed parts in the entire project. The base was built on half of a Vaultz Clipboard Case. The few parts I had to manufacture were simply cut and sanded to shape using a scrap piece of yellow 5mm thick PVC plastic, a 1x4 scrap of wood, a scroll saw, and dremel. The worklog linked above will show you exactly how this was built.

It was done this way because the entire thing was a constant "will it fit?" scenario with the parts. It was all kind of spur of the moment on the design. It was simply quicker and easier to measure and cut a piece to shape, sand it up quickly, then see if it fit. I actually prefer the weight of this thing and the wood piece acting as a spine provides enough rigidity to survive a small drop. I could go back and create 3D printed parts for it, but that seems like a waste of time for me now.

u/Toast_Sapper · 2 pointsr/Showerthoughts

I used to have this problem, but no longer.

Get yourself one of these and some of these and up to 4 pens/pencils (there's even a pouch under the pen holders you can keep extra items in, I keep mechanical pencil leads and a full eraser in there).

Now whenever I have a thought I need to remember or need to hash out an idea I just pull this out of my pocket, scribble it out (unlined paper means you can also draw diagrams + doodles ftw!) And I can just put it back in my pocket when I'm done. Minimal effort required.

I even got one of these and clip the notepads into it so I always have a hard writing surface and can write while standing/walking.

u/hopefullyromantic · 2 pointsr/nursing

She's talking about the whitecoat clipboards. There are different versions though, so think about if she wants the standard nursing one, the pediatric one, etc.

If she doesn't already have one, a good Littman stethoscope is nice, but $$$.

Badgeclips are a cute and cheap present. Etsy has a bunch. I have a cute little felt one with a fox on it that I like, but there's a lot of variety if you just look around.

If you guys are shoe people, nice sneakers that are comfortable would be nice and it's not specific to nursing.

u/mkakids · 2 pointsr/StudentNurse

I loved it! I hated having to go looking for all my patient information when i needed to answer questions or look something up.

The other option i saw a lot of people using was one of these:

Nursing Clipboard with Storage by Tribe RN with Quick Access Medical References - Includes Downloadable Cheat Sheets - (Nurse Clipboard Mint) https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07FLJH84B/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_i_6C-wDb31X5EVP

I started with one of the storage ones, but then switched because I was constantly putting it down somewhere and either misplacing it, or having to run to where I left it when I needed it.

u/funkytoad · 2 pointsr/searchandrescue

I use one of these metal ones: This is pretty much the same thing on Amazon. They are durable as heck, I can have it loaded up with all sorts of papers I might need. I can fit all of my pens and such. It's a little bit bulky, but it's perfect for my needs. Plus, I know I won't break it when I do run out into the field. Mine may not be the exact same brand as the one on Amazon there, but it looks the same. I picked it up for about $15 at Walmart.

Two things on your comments regarding bags that just have one large compartment and documents.

  1. I find a fold-over clipboard works well as both somewhere to have a small amount of personal paper/reading/print outs and a section divider for such a large compartment.

Even the cheap ones look decent and the fold-over means even if you have to get it out of your bag, contents aren’t seen.

    Example: https://www.amazon.com/Looneng-Clipboard-Folder-Padfolio-Vertical/dp/B07D1JL7PZ

  2. I’ve found the Eagle Creek Pack-It series also really useful. Use the cubes for gym gear / random stuff, and the garment folder good for workwear - providing you can somehow deal with inevitable creases at the hotel which will be far fewer if all your shirts are non-iron.

    Garment folder: https://www.amazon.com/Eagle-Creek-Travel-Luggage-Garment/dp/B00F9S819U

While not pretty, a [Clipboard Storage box] (https://www.amazon.com/dp/B002MCZA2C/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_KZSbAb249Z7H4) would make an inexpensive and very useful gift, especially if you’re giving them to multiple players. We got one for our tech-challenged players and they’ve usedit for years: Holds a notebook, pens and even a little dicebag. Fill it up with a world map, a custom sheet and some trinkets to top it off. (Im a fan of cheap brass compasses myself)

Best I could find:

I went to Staples and they didn't have any aluminum ones in store so they said order online. It costs almost twice as much:
http://m.staples.ca/en/Saunders-Storage-Clipboard-Aluminum-523-x-912/product_170200_2-CA_1_20001?langId=1
So fuck Staples.
Go with amazon, it's not waterproof so just put it in your pack if it rains.

Me and my clinical group gifted our clinical instructor this

It's a foldable clipboard that has a bunch of useful medical stuff on the front/back

Last semester me and my group gave one to our previous instructor as well. It's a practical gift and fits into most pockets. I have one myself that I use for clinicals except I have the "nursing edition" one. Everyone who sees it asks me where I got it. It's a really good buy.

Edit: Just saw you wrote you want to keep it around $20. This clipboard is a little more than that, but if you are buying it with classmates it only equals to a few dollars per person.

u/StewofPuppies · 1 pointr/StudentNurse

Brands for any of those things don't really matter except for Stethoscope. And even then you shouldn't be overspending. Like there is a good Littmann scope for $200. I recommend people to get that one but not for nursing school and 2nd some people lose their stethoscope like potheads lose bic lighters so it's not always a good thing getting the most expensive thing. Or if you are, make sure you get a really unique/flamboyant color in which when people see it they will automatically think "YES that's u/AviatingPenguin24's Littmann." Littmann scopes have a lifetime warranty if you are buying from a certified and genuine seller (heard there's a lot of fakes for littmann's).

BP cuff, a cheap one off Amazon will be miles better than most BP cuff you use in lab for practices. Really that's it. The rest you can pretty much get basic/cheap or simple brands. Check the reviews to make sure it's not some bootleg quality material and that they have good enough customer service/warranty service.

As for pulse oximeter I have no idea. We weren't required to purchase one. TBH I would go for the cheap one; the cheaper and easier to replace the better.

You're going to likely be buying more supplementary equipment for clinicals and stuff (optional things but very useful IMO) like a clipboard or small notepad or other NCLEX supplementary material. So save money when you can where you can and make sure they are easy to replace. Also expensive and good brands don't always mean more durable/longer-lasting (the girl who bought the $200 Littmann scope broke it on her 2nd week of use and took almost a month to replace under warranty). Which is why I stress "easy/convenience in replacing." This includes cost and how fast can you get it/if it is readily available. You preferably want everything to be accessible within the week and with warranty, in 2 weeks

A drug reference guide is helpful. This clipboard I loved https://www.amazon.com/WhiteCoat-Clipboard-Pink-Nursing-Edition/dp/B00GWSPT9Q

Hmmm well I found This

u/tarantulae · 1 pointr/videos

>If it gets sucked into a turbine engine, yeah.

Actually, killing the engine isn't a scenario I'd be worried about. Helicopters can land with a dead engine. Its the bird going into the cockpit that takes them down by incapacitating the pilot(s) or interfering with the controls.

As you said, there is the well known 2009 crash. A 2.4 (average) pound red-tailed hawk went through the windscreen, hit the throttles for both engines shutting them down. You might wonder how such a light bird could go through the windshield of such a big helicopter (7000-11,700 lbs). The helicopter was cruising at 155mph. The windshields on helicopters do not have to withstand birdstrikes like on airliners, they are often acrylic. Take any 1-3 pound object and hit it with acrylic at 155mph and it will go through.

This quad is a ZMR250. Best I can find is about 500grams for a flyable one. With an additional 88g for the gopro4. That's about 1.3 pounds of plastic, carbon fiber and metal. Plenty heavy enough to go through the windshield and incapacitate a pilot.

As for accidents. Here are a few, starting with fatalities:

  1. CEN09MA117 This is the 2009 one discussed.
  2. LAX93LA166 Bird strike to tail rotor. He was able to successfully make a landing in the water, but not before his passenger jumped out and died.
  3. HH-60G Pave Hawk geese flying through the aircraft’s windshield, knocking the pilot and co-pilot unconscious. This is a 16,000-22,000 lb military helicopter.
  4. WPR10FA440 Not a bird strike, but a metal clipboard. First result googling "metal clipboard" I found is this weight 1.5 lbs, or about the same as the drone.

    Now for the non-fatal ones:

  5. DEN69F0190 Bird strike on tail rotor.
  6. FTW73DRD15 Buzzard jammed between transmission and swash plate, cyclic control tube broken
  7. MIA88FA257 Seagull hit tail rotor causing in flight separation
  8. FTW90FA111 Multiple bird strike causing in flight vibrations and requiring immediate landing
  9. FTW95LA011 Bird strike resulting in autorotation
  10. FTW97LA354 A bird struck and sheared the cyclic push pull tube
  11. NYC98LA079 helicopter started to descend from a stabilized 20-foot hover, and rotate to the right after striking a bird of unknown type
  12. DFW06CA048 a large buzzard collided with the right windscreen and struck the pilot's face
  13. DEN07CA073 two of the three tail rotor blades were bent, and the drive shaft was bent 24 degrees. Feathers and bird remains were found in the tail rotor system
  14. ERA11CA012 the main rotor blades required replacement after hitting a bird
  15. ERA12LA379 The pilot felt something impact the upper right side of the helicopter near the main rotor mast area. The helicopter began shaking violently and became difficult to control. Evidence of bird remains were present on components of the rotor head, two of the four pitch change rods, and the tail rotor. Both pitch change rods with bird remains were separated from one of their attach points.
  16. ERA14CA009 both windshields were blown out, the center post and the cabin shell were damaged, the doors were blown open and onboard medical equipment was missing. On the ground, a crewmember stated that just before the event, he had seen a black bird fly toward the helicopter from above and left, but did not have enough time to call it out.
  17. CEN15CA039 one of the birds and the retreating main rotor blade collided. The pilot landed the helicopter without further incident. Examination of the helicopter revealed substantial damage to the main rotor blade.

I'm sure with some more time I could find more. The point is, yes, small birds can and do bring down large helicopters, sometimes people die as a result. Flying near airports, helicopter routes, or without a spotter is a bad idea.
