My great grandpa said that his dad never could kick coffee after it was made the Law (they were sheepherders). The rest of the family switched to Pero (like Postum), and my dad would sometimes bring some home and I got a taste for it too. I used to make shakes with both Pero and chocolate powder included. My family loved them.

u/infinityball · 7 pointsr/mormon

It is! My grandparents were obsessed with Pero for years. I thought it was disgusting as a kid. I'd probably love it now.

u/AMHousewife · 3 pointsr/exmormon

If I was in Provo, I would have brought you this. It's almost like sneaking in a flask, except it'll turn your BYU cold milk in a carton into lovely iced coffee:

Someone go to the grocery store and buy some of this for Lauren already.

u/bobpaul · 3 pointsr/soylent

Maxwell House and Folgers both have coffee concentrates which I've been adding to Soylent for quite a long time. (Way cheaper at my grocery store than Amazon...)

u/Animalex · 2 pointsr/bodyweightfitness

Correct! I was just on mobile and already starting to get long winded. Thanks for linking that.

Also, I've ordered this chicory several times and it's pretty great.

u/bigtitch · 2 pointsr/Coffee

I'll leave this here. Camp Coffee

My mum swore by it - but then only for baking and not for actual drinking.

u/BrovaloneSandwich · 2 pointsr/Cooking

This is my ultimate secret ingredient for chili. Camp Chicory and Coffee 241g https://www.amazon.ca/dp/B00IRYDO7W/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_i_GO9QDb54K0R38

u/latazzajones · 2 pointsr/Hashimotos

Ever since my hashi got bad caffeine causes me to get super sick but I LOVE coffee. The only thing I’ve found close is Cafix. It’s pretty amazingly close.

They sell it at my local Whole Foods but the label’s red.

It's also a brand of coffee .

I hope we can agree that Amazon is the God of information.

u/katsupnfries · 2 pointsr/Coffee

How about adding chicory? New Orleans and Vietnamese coffee are flavored with chicory. Grady's cold brew also. You might be able to find chicory in powder or liquid form. I don't have personal experience with this, so not sure how much to add per cup. Here's some more info on the history of chicory use in coffee.

u/Goth_Spice14 · 2 pointsr/CampingGear

Lol fuck that shit. I just drink Vinacafe Ca Phe Hoa Tan. It's the best instant I've ever had, to the point where I'm starting to prefer it. And for me that is seriously saying something.

You can get a shit ton of it for cheap, too.

u/anoonanmoose · 2 pointsr/intermittentfasting

I drank coffee substitute Cafix during 3+ months of fasting 16 hrs per day. It has a trace of 5 calories, but i still ended up losing 11 pounds during time in question. Cafix is made of freeze dried roasted barley, rye, chicory and sugar beets.

u/Vryven · 2 pointsr/BirdsBeingDicks

I have a coffee obsessed bird. He'll go so far as attacking you if you won't let him have it.

I found a solution that's safe for him. I think I actually read about it somewhere on Reddit. There's a coffee substitute called Postum that's made from wheat and molasses.

I make him a cup of that, and he'll drink it while I have my coffee and then we're both happy.

This is what I got him: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0004JR8SE

u/Ketrel · 2 pointsr/parrots

This should be ok right? This was my original plan if the highly dilute coffee was still to risky

u/CityBarman · 2 pointsr/cocktails

Congrats on your pending nuptial! Here's a riff on a White Russian with inspiration from The Aviary. It's a cocktail your guests will probably have never had before. Mix up a small batch to make sure you like it. =)

1.5 oz cold brew coffee concentrate*
1 oz Rum (Appleton's Signature Blend, Coruba Dark, Chairman's Reserve Spiced, Cruzan 9 Spiced. Not too vanilla forward.)
.25 oz Galliano L’Autentico
.25 oz Chickory syrup**

1 oz Shaken heavy cream

A day or two before, batch the first 4 ingredients in sufficient quantities for your guests and chill.

Pour 3 oz of batch over a couple of rocks in an old fashioned glass.

Shake cold heavy cream in a cocktail shaker until thickened but still flowing (A drop on your finger will bead up.)

Float 1 oz of cream on top of cocktail.

No garnish necessary.

*Cold Brew Coffee Concentrate (1:4 coffee to water)
-Doesn't need to be fancy or expensive. Let's make this easy. Scale as required. Use a new-clean 5 gal bucket from Home Depot or Lowes if need be.

1 10.5 ounce can of bold/dark coffee (Chock Full Of Nuts New York Roast is fine and goes on sale for $2)
1.2 liter (1200 ml; 40 oz) filtered tap water (or bottled spring water), room temp

Combine in large container, stir well and cover. Let steep 24 hours at room temperature.
Place a kitchen sieve over a large container. Line with large coffee filter.
Give coffee solution one last good stir and filter through sieve. (Be patient.)
Will keep well refrigerated for a week.

**Chicory Syrup
-Scale as necessary

.25 cup roasted, ground chicory (like this or this)
1 cup water
1 cup Demerara sugar (table sugar works ok)

Place water into pan and bring to a boil. Remove from heat. Stir in sugar until dissolved. Add chicory and return to heat. Simmer for 5 minutes. Pour through fine mesh strainer (tea strainer) into mason jar. Will keep refrigerated for a week.

Yep! There are even pre ground cacao beans people use as coffee substitutes. It's really good. I'll add some to my grounds when I pull an espresso shot, too.

u/A9-EE-78-6A-C8-9F · 1 pointr/CalPolyPomona

Have you tried that coffee substitute made from cacao? Brb, gonna find a link

EDIT:
I think this is it. The bag look different but the name sounds familiar

R1D18: I got some Crio Bru roasted, ground cacao that brews like coffee, and it is such a treat. Pre-whole30, it would have been impossible to drink without sweetener and cream, but a couple of weeks in, and it is lovely. www.amazon.com/gp/product/B01796N5IG

Brew some ground up cocoa beans like coffee.

u/DetectorReddit · 1 pointr/AskCulinary

Yeah- give this a shot. I will pull it out if people express issues with coffee. It is dandelion root mixed with chicory and ramon seed.

u/mmblrd · 1 pointr/intermittentfasting

Try adding some chicory. You can add it to the coffee when brewing, or there are extracts or instant chicory. I have been adding a scant teaspoon of extract to my cup of regular coffee in the morning. It resolved the occasional shakiness and has been surprising ly helpful with suppressing my appetite the rest of the day.

u/ScarlettFeverrrr · 1 pointr/Interstitialcystitis

Yeah. It tastes terrible. This stuff comes closest to the taste of the real thing, IMHO: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00DCAHPYO

Even my husband was impressed.

u/Yes_I_Fuck_Foxes · 1 pointr/NintendoSwitch

No lie though, I actually do like (the convenience of) their iced coffee concentrate. I keep a few of the things around, allows me total spontaneity in my iced coffee consumption.

u/slampants · 1 pointr/Anxiety

Definitely. Try chicory!

Cafe Cubita Coffee. 8.8 oz vacuum pack, includes a beautiful burlap bag. https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00KO90PW0/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_z1O7xb5H42DSQ

Well, this one might not be actually made in Cuba apparently.

Friend of mine found this Maya nut coffee substitute. It isn't great, but maybe it's worth a shot.

u/SirCharlesEquine · 1 pointr/SkincareAddiction

You’re welcome. You might check out a product called Crio Bru. I drank a lot of this on Keto to make Keto coffee, and still have it from time to time. No caffeine, but contains theobromine, which has a slower ramp up and no crash like coffee and caffeine. It’s good stuff.

Coworker turned me on to Vinacafe instant. Its vietnamese instant coffee and tastes way better than any other instant coffee ive ever had. Recommend trying this instead of lugging around a coffee maker in the field. Otherwise theres always cowboy coffee...

>BHB confused with butryric acid

Thanks. They are different, both seem to have beneficial influence on the immune system:

>Cancer[edit]
The role of butyrate differs between normal and cancerous cells. This is known as the "butyrate paradox". Butyrate inhibits colonic tumor cells, and promotes healthy colonic epithelial cells;[33] but the signaling mechanism is not well understood.[34] A review suggested the chemopreventive benefits of butyrate depend in part on amount, time of exposure with respect to the tumorigenic process, and the type of fat in the diet.[18] The production of volatile fatty acids such as butyrate from fermentable fibers may contribute to the role of dietary fiber in colon cancer.[18]

>Diabetes[edit]
A review on the relationship between the microbiome and diabetes asserted that butyrate can induce "profound immunometabolic effects" in animal models of and humans with type 2 diabetes;[26] it also noted a relationship between the presence of obesity or diabetes and a state of marked dysbiosis in a host, which is not yet completely understood.[26] While acknowledging that there is strong evidence for the use of butyrate in such disorders, the review called for more research into the pathophysiology (i.e., biomolecular mechanisms) of these diseases, so as to improve therapeutic approaches to these diseases.[26] Butyric_acid

Thanks for practical tips. I plan on adding chicory - inulin.. Another source for rosmarinic acid is rosemary I use it daily - infused olive oil.

u/AmNotLost · 1 pointr/roasting

Chicory can be harvested from just about any empty parking lot or roadside. It's the spindly weed with little purple/blue flowers. Recipes are available online for drying and roasting it.

Or buy roasted chicory at your local organic food store that has bulk bins of, like, TVP and a bulk spice section. I don't think it should be powder. It should be coarser. I think this is the stuff I've used here

Where I live in Northern NJ the dominant supermarket chain Shop-rite, health food stores, etc., carry Teeccino. There is also imitation coffee that is "instant" like instant coffee. There is the made in Poland brand Cafix for instance:

>Roasted barley, rye, chicory, sugar beets.
