Why buy a Keurig just to awkwardly fill and clean a tiny pod for single cup coffee? My mom does the same thing. Getting the grounds out of the pod takes forever. Why not spend much less on a single cup coffee machine with a permanent filter? It's easier to clean and you can make the coffee stronger. I have this one and love it.
I am of the opinion that both plastic and steel affect the taste of my coffee. I know stainless steel is supposed to be neutral but I swear it affects the taste, and plastic definitely does. The "I am not a paper cup" is what i have, it's currently unavailable as far as i know, but there are plenty of knock offs available. Just find one made of ceramic with a silicone lid.
If you were willing to do that, your best bet would be to find a pod coffee maker somewhere around campus. Then just use your own coffee pod. WinCo sells them for 40 cents each and you can get them even cheaper on Amazon. You can also buy refillable versions of them.
Or even better, rather than sneaking into prohibited areas, just get one of these or similar. You can put hot coffee into this thing in the morning, and sealed, it will remain too hot to drink until tomorrow morning.
If a $30 thermos is beyond your budget, head on over to any of the ten thousand thrift stores within a mile of campus, or go to the OSUsed store when it's open. They always have vacuum thermoses for sale. You can probably get one for under $5.
Realize, when you're purchasing coffee on campus, or anywhere else, you're not paying for the coffee. You're paying for the convenience. You're paying for the ability to not have to brew it yourself, clean the machine out, have tools and equipment available, etc. And you're paying for someone to stand around all day, just waiting for people to come in looking for coffee. Even if no one comes in for an entire hour, everyone at that shop is getting paid. Plus the cost of the space itself. The vendors on campus all have to pay rent to OSU, just like any other landlord.
In short, $2 really isn't that outrageous for instant, convenient coffee that you don't have to lift a finger for. People often also pay $2 for a bottle of water, when they could get the same water for less than a penny per gallon out of their home tap. You're not paying for the water; you're paying for the convenience.

My Zojirushi thermos is amazingly BIFL. Not only can you pull the lid completely apart for easy cleaning (my biggest gripe with the Contigo is that the lid is a PITA to clean) but it keep liquids hot for a VERY long time. I have put hot tea in it at 9am, drank out of it most of the work day, then accidentally left it closed on my desk overnight - the next day at 9am the tea inside is still warm. Crazy.
You can still open it up with one hand, too. Love love love it.

This is my Black and Decker Cup At A Time coffee maker that I bought in January 1994. Model is DCM6.
This coffee maker saw daily use from 1994-2005, 3-4x weekly since 2005. It still brews a great cup of coffee every time and has held up very well for almost 25 years old.
The B&D one cup model is now called Brew 'n Go, and it is model number DCM18. By all appearances and by progression of the model number series, it is the exact same maker... albeit it is only made in black now, and it comes with either a beige/black or stainless/black travel mug. Amazon link
Looks like /u/Veritech-1 beat me to the punch on this, but I'd like to add another endorsement for Zojirushi coffee thermoses. I'm a coffee addict and a PhD student, so I spend a lot of time going from place to place with hot coffee in hand. I'm also very hard on my thermoses. Every one I've used eventually gets leaky, cracks, and so on. Not my Zojirushi. I fill it with hot coffee and shove it in my backpack every morning and it has never spilled. I once filled it and forgot it at home. When I came back from work, the coffee was still piping hot. Everyone who needs coffee on the go should own one of these.
I've got one of those Zojirushi thermoses, so I just brew extra in the morning and bring it with me. They really are as good as they are touted to be, so I've got piping hot coffee for up to 7 or 8 hours into my day.

Those k cups make way too much unnecessary waste. So much less garbage produced with a regular drip coffee machine. If you want a one cup solution these are awesome.

As a non-rider (but wannabe), I also have one and can throw it in my field pack while hiking and it keeps coffee leak-free and warm for 10+ hours. I even use mine just around the office.
Also want to point out that it just 'feels' solid. I haven't used a traditional thermos in a while, but I seem to remember them being somewhat fragile as you didn't want to shatter the glass vacuum vessel. Thermoses might be engineered differently now, though.
I'm not quite sure how this insulates so well, but it seems far more robust and has withstood a few drops on my end.
I agree, Contigo is the way to go. It has this cool locking method that ensures it is sealed and wont leak. I use mine every day and throw it in my backpack and it gets jostled around and doesn't leak at all. Definitely recommend.

Coffee is one you don't think about but can add up really fast. I used to buy two coffees every work day at €2.50 a pop - fiver a day, five days a week, 48 weeks a year - €1200 a year.

Zojirushi is by far the best most secure thermos you can buy. It's got a lock so it will never open in your back if you lock it, and it will keep your coffee hot forever. Plus, it's much lighter than the continuo autoseal.

SM-KA48 model is out of production. Look for SM-KHE48 or SM-KB48 (should be around $27 and $31 respectively). Those are the more recent models.
SM-KB48 is the newest with the only difference being it has a different (don't know if "better") type of non-stick coating on the inside of the mug.
I would recommend Zojirushi but one time I put creamer and sugar in it then shook it up with the lid closed and coffee went everywhere..

I was just about to get one of these from Amazon. How do you know there are counterfeits diluting the stock?

I've done a fair amount of research into this matter. I generally enjoy drinking tea out of glass. But when I'm out in the world and need to be able to have a vessel that will slip into my backpack on cold days without fear that it will break? One of these two treats me just fine.
As someone else has stated, the maintenance and upkeep of such a vessel, due to the tea stains, will be something that you will have to deal with. I have to plan appropriately enough to be able to allow it to breath, as it is generally fairly hot. Overcooking the tea is a concern sometimes. But again, proper planning...
If you're going to get a YETI (or a an off-brand YETI), I'd recommend one of their Ramblers instead of any of these metal koozie things.
IMO, Koozies are best for the fact that you can fold them and keep them in your pocket. They're good for keeping beer kinda cold and your hands dry, but I mostly use them for finding which beer is mine at a party.
The Rambler cups allow you to smell a good beer - especially hop-bombs with a full nose or something else you're excited to smell while you drink - while also allowing you to use them for coffee, Arnold Palmers, margaritas, whatever-the-hell-you-want. Since the YETI or RTIC koozies don't fold, they're just as useful and transportable as the Ramblers.
During a beach vacation last week, I used my Rambler for coffee in the mornings, rinsed it out and filled it with beer at the beach, rinsed it out and threw in some margarita at night, then rinsed it out for ice water before bed.

Girl, being too lazy to use a Keurig really is a whole 'nother level of lazy, hahahah. (Though I suppose using the reusable pods adds a layer of effort that I might not be up for in the morning, either.) I have this French press mug and can attest to its awesomeness! I only use it in a pinch, though, because I need more coffee than that on any given morning, and I've been much better about prepping my French press at night (making sure it's clean, grinding beans for the next day) lately.
I have that tumbler and have found it incredibly helpful during my cross-country trip I'm currently doing. My one issue with it is that you can over-steep tea rather easily. Because of this, I've been eyeballing the Highwave Joefish.
I also have been using the Zojirushi thermos, which keeps hot water for quite a long time.

Edit: The Zojirushi is the dankest of the dank at keeping coffee hot for the longest and has a lock on the cap so you can keep it in a bag and not worry on it spilling.

I cannot speak highly enough for the travel mug by Teas Etc, I've had mine for over two years and plan to get another as a backup. I bought a little thermos sling for it to carry around with me, which more or less keeps it hot the entire day. But even without the sling, it still keeps hot for quite awhile. I really fell in love with it due to the design though. It being see through whenever I'm out with it people comment on it, either they want one or more likely they have never seen loose leaf tea before, so I usually point them in the right direction.
The trick to keeping it from over-steeping is to use less leaf and cooler water. For anyone thinking this is blasphemy, keep in mind that a good majority of green tea drunk daily in China is just thrown into a glass cup with water added to the same leaves as needed throughout the day.

I'm a fan of the Zojirushi Thermos. Maybe try switching up your beans too, seeing if there's a different kind that handle being in a thermos all day.
All the people I know who've owned glass tumblers have had them break. I'm usually very careful with my stuff, so I bought one too, but it broke within 6 months. It looked nice while it lasted, but what a waste of $25.
This one from Zojirushi is the best one on the market and a great example of Japanese engineering. They ripped off the design from Nissan, which at the time had the most well-designed tumbler on the market, but they made several modifications that made it even better. The older model maxes out at 16 oz, but the newer model comes in 20 oz. The newer model also has a high quality non-stick lining that should prevent any odors. Also, it's small enough to fit in a BMW cup holder.
They're a little expensive (around $32), but they last forever. My parents have used the older model daily for 3 years, and the mugs still look brand new.
Cantigo makes a coffee mug that locks closed so the mouth soiece you drink from wont move or spill. I have been using it for years and no leaks on my bus travels.

When I bought mine (many years ago now), I could only find them in the Museum of Modern Art gift shop (in San Francisco, but was also sold in NY, Chicago, et al MoMA gift shops) and they cost $25 each at the time - but Amazon now sells them for $11.46. The porcelain imparts no taste or flavor outside of the coffee itself. The double-walled construction keeps the coffee nice and hot for the length of any reasonable commute (mine is about 35 mins). The food-grade silicone lid fits perfectly and allows for perfect car-sipping. The silicone DOES have a very noticeable plastic-ey smell when new, but mine has absolutely no smell at all now. It takes several washings to get rid of the original silicone smell. I take the lid off when I'm at the office and want to drink coffee at my desk anyway...
I've never been a big fan of stainless steel - I just like the heft and feel of a good porcelain mug. The outside of the mug has a perfect paper cup texture/feel, and the inside is perfectly glassy porcelain. Hope that helps!

I honestly don't remember the brand. I would just look for it at either your grocery store or possibly a camping supply store. It was certainly not gourmet coffee. Standard mass produced name brand coffee.
It's a little more work however you could also get a travel thermos depending on how much you drink. I have one of these and it will reliably keep coffee hot for 8-12 hours (at 4 hours it's still too hot to drink) and have even forgotten it and found it was still drinkably warm 24h later.

In late, and you already got a response from nibs, but I am partial to the Starbucks Instant coffee. It's super convenient for camping or traveling (the only time I use it, LOL).

It works well enough. Its handy to be able to toss in a bag preloaded with grounds then fill with microwaved hot water at work or wherever.
My favorite mug, by far, is this wide based behemoth. You can knock it around accidentally and it won't tip. Preheat the ceramic with hot water and it holds the temp very well (nice thick walls). Only downside is that it doesn't fit in a standard cup holder. For those times, I use the Contigo Autoseal cup/thermos/mug. The lid cools the coffee slightly and automatically seals, so great for commuting. Not great for the hand warming aspect you said she liked, but then no stainless steel mugs will measure up to a ceramic for this quality.
Just remember that if it's warming her hands, it is losing heat. The only way to make sure your coffee and hands are warmed is with thick ceramic or stone. The better it is one way (hands <-> coffee heat), the worse it will be in the other. Otherwise, you can get a cup warmer to try and keep the temp up. I have the one I linked there, and while you don't want to leave the cup on there 8 hours, it will extend the drinkable time from 20-30 minutes to 2-ish hours. The warmer will get hot enough that you can touch the surface, but won't want to leave you finger on it more than a few seconds (I think it is the perfect temp compromise between useful and dangerous). Lastly, there will be folks in this subreddit horrified by the prospect of heating coffee after the initial brew. Realistically, the flavor is unaffected for about 45-60 minutes, and after that there is a very, very slight difference. As someone that hates cold coffee, that minor difference is nothing like choking down room temperature brew... ick!
tl;dr - 1st mug for home use and hand warming, 2nd mug for travel. Consider a cup warmer if she really nurses every cup or is using a thinner ceramic mug.

I rock that bad boy. I don't notice any metal taste at all. It has a plastic mouthpiece that the fluid flows through before getting to your mouth. (I also don't notice a plastic taste..haha). A bit pricey. Works incredibly well though.

For a little more ($30), I cannot recommend the zojirushi 16oz enough. I have the black one and it looks great and it is unreal how long it keeps my coffee hot. There is also a 12oz one as well I believe, and it may be a bit cheaper.
Edit: This is the best I could find: Zojirushi 480ml, but I'm from the states, so I'm not sure if there is better place to get them, I just searched on the UK amazon. This was £1 more than the 360ml.

I have two of these and loved them until the day I had one in my bag sideways and somehow was leaning on the release button and ended up with a butt and bag drenched in coffee. Had no problems with the seal or leakage and held heat amazingly. I still use them but my "throw it into my bag sideways" mug is now the Zojirushi travel mug since it has a lock.
So, because biian's bag comment inspired me, I was thinking of some non-makeup stuff that'd I'd love to buy if, you know, I had no debts and an unlimited budget. These are things I love even though I don't have them :P
What is the environment? Are we talking somewhere with an explosion risk, so no heat sources at all? Do you just mean he has no access to an energy source? How about a really good thermos? Zojirushi are pretty damn fantastic and very secure but, depending where you are, you're going to have to move fast to get it for Christmas.

I love mine. I bought mine a few weeks ago after reading a similar thread, (actually I bought two) and it's by far the best purchase I've made for beverages. The temperature doesn't really start to drop until after the 12 hour mark. I have the one with the flip top even though I don't really commute that far, but it's really convenient to use. Even when I'm at home, I'll brew enough to fill it up + a mug, because it does a better job of keeping it hot and without burning it than the warming plate on my coffee maker.

The other one I got is more thermos style, and while it does keep the coffee hot for 12+ hours, it does have a minor amount of spilling after pouring from it, so keeping napkins nearby is kinda necessary.
My mom (who also knows nothing about the show) got me this TARDIS tumbler a few years ago and I used it constantly while I was working. There are loads of different hot and cold cup options on Amazon that you could get before Christmas.
I'm not sure where you're located, but I've always found great stuff at Newbury Comics. They have an online shop, too, but I'm not sure what kind of shipping options they have. If there is a store near where you live, they have shirts, keychains, figurines, and plenty of other things you could get for her.

Water is in a CamelBak Eddy water bottle - for some reason it's easier to drink plenty of water through a straw, and it's spill proof for a klutz like me.
I also usually have a Zojirushi SM-SA48 mug with me. It keeps my /r/coffee from Forte Legato hot all day - I like to make it at home around 8 and drink it during the afternoon slump. Disclaimer: I started out buying Forte Legato, but now I sometimes work for them in exchange for free coffee beans. The owner calls me the director of sales, but I dunno how much weight that carries since I'm not really an employee. :P
Don't bash it till you try it. Zojirushi will keep coffee at a drinkable temperature for a full 8 hour day without much trouble. I have the 16oz version and love it. It locks shut so you don't spill, it has 16 oz which is a good size (and larger sizes), keeps things hot. It is pretty simple but I would think some one who is artistic could get some paint pens and make it look awesome.

Zojirushi 480ml flask. I personally brew my coffee, pour it into one of these, and then pour it into an enamelware mug a little at a time when I want some. (I use enamelware because it won't pull as much heat from your coffee as a traditional ceramic mug.)

Funny! I hated having to press a button to access my coffee with the Contigo and prefer my zojirushi lid because it stays out of the way and doesn't move once it's open. There's also a 20oz zojirushi available here!
I also like cleaning the lid of the zojirushi better - I drink cream in my coffee and found that contigo did not come as clean and definitely not as easily. The zojirushi pops apart and everything cleans easily. I did hear that contigo may have improved that, though, but I don't know as I haven't had one in a while. They both lock, so no accidental leaks can happen and each seal so nicely for tossing in a bag with no worries about leaking coffee on your things.

EDIT: To be clear, the RTICs are good too, and if you care about lid performance, check out the Zojirushi or Hydroflask options as well. They're more expensive than the RTIC tumblers, but you get more (in terms of lid performance.) For the Yeti vs RTIC or Ozark though, hard left swipe to the Yeti. They're just ridiculously overpriced. It's literally just branding.

I've been using one for winter hiking. Boiled water and filled it the night before. Spent all day hiking with it in -10F temps. While it's probably not as nice as some, I've used the Contigo brand version of Hydroflask for a couple years and love it! The 20 oz bottle fits in most standard cup holders and withstands abuse pretty well. It keeps ice cold and unmelted forever (like 12 hours at a time.) It's also got the snapseal so it's one-handed drinking--no unscrewing a lid when you need a drink. And it's about $20. :)

Most travel mugs don't handle microwave ovens very well, at lest the ones I've heard of. Many have metal inside, some in the side and some in the opening mechanism in the lid.
I would not be too worried about the plastic warping, but some plastic types can supposedly release some unhealthy chemicals when microwaved, which can ruin the taste of the coffee (but might also be a bit dangerous to consume).
There are travel mugs that are advertised as microwave safe, but they tend to be less insulated than the ones metal/non-microwaveable ones, like this one.
It's a Tea's Etc. I've been thinking about getting one like this, however, it's made of plastic which turns me off.
I'm really tempted to get a Libre, which is made of plastic on the outside and glass on the inside, but the price is ludicrous.

You wouldn't need filters, a coffee machine, or anything else. I prefer the convenience of a kettle, but you could use a microwave too. It's portable, it tastes good imo, and it stays warm for a few hours.
I usually take 2-4 grams with this. Usually a 1/2 tbs of coconut oil (even though it's super healthy it's still a lot of fat!), and 1 tbs of honey. It's definitely not delicious since kratom is so damn bitter, but it doesn't phase me anymore.
As I'm sure you know, kratom is difficult to dissolve in water. I've found that it does dissolve while in hot water for several minutes and shaken up a few times. I use this and recommend something similar. A leak proof top so you can easily shake it before sips makes it a lot better.
How is Zojirushi not at the top of this thread. Here's a video of thermos comparisons I grabbed from another thread a while back here which does a comparison between them and a number of other top brands. I'd take a Zojirushi over a Thermos brand or Stanley any day, their designs are just so much more functional. I've got one of these which is often mentioned on this sub, and I could not like more. It both performs excellently (almost too well, I generally cool down my tea before putting it in so that I can drink it within the next 7 hours) and is seriously built to last, not to mention is easier than some other competitors offerings to clean.
The Zojirushi travel cups will keep your coffee at burn-your-lips temperatures waaaay longer than you expect, or cold stuff icy for just as long, but they only come in 12- and 16-ounce sizes:

Totally non traditional, but I love my kleen kanteen pint glass. It's insulated stainless steel, which means no coaster needed and it stays cold and fizzy for an extremely long time.

I too really like Klean Kanteen I use it almost exclusively to drink coffee both at home and on the go. Be aware though that the KleanKanteen lids are not leak proof at all! The lid which will keep your coffee very hot leaks like crazy and is not at all practical for say driving. As far as the stainless steel imparting flavor... That is an issue I am constantly monitoring. When I brew a pour-over I immediately transfer the entire yield to the KleenKanteen. I pour a splash into an ice chilled ceramic LINO 5 oz. Cappuccino Cup & Saucer by notNeutral and another splash into a 2nd preheated Lino.
There is definitely a shift in mouth feel between drinking from a ceramic cup and stainless steel but I have yet to detect a flavor shift. Perhaps my palette is calibrated for stainless. I definitely take the lid completely off to drink as yes the plastic lid is not satisfying to drink through. For me drinking my coffee exclusively from a ceramic cup forces me to drink too quickly. I enjoy tracking the flavor changes in each brew from hot to chilled at a slow controlled pace. Having the option to speed up or slow down the cooling by removing/replacing lid on KleanKanteen is invaluable. I sometimes pour out more coffee into Lino too if I detect flavor changes at other temperatures as well. There are indeed real sensory experience changes between stainless steel and ceramic but not true flavor shifts. But I fully realize everyone has there own sensitivities. I am also meticulous in cleaning the stainless steel. The lid could well be the biggest culprit in imparting unwanted flavor in all brands of Stainless Steel containers.

I brew a chemex every day and store it in a Zojirushi and bring it to work. There is a definite change (in my opinion depreciation) of flavor that results from having it stored there. I must admit my thermos isn't in the most spotless condition, as it's narrow clearance makes it very difficult to scrub. When drinking from the thermos itself, the quality heat-retention makes it hard to decipher whether or not if I will burn myself, as well as ruining any aromatics that may have been a component of the brew. Even when pouring it into a separate styrofoam cup, I notice it's not great, but still better than drinking from the thermos directly.
Would I love to drop dough on a Lido 2, Gooseneck, and Chemex for work? Oh yeah.

I have a Zojirushi SM-SA48-BA which is apparently 8.6 x 2.8 x 8.6 inches.
This is what it looks like. Seems like a tight fit to me considering it's a bit less than half a liter. It could be a bit wider but if it gets any higher than mine, you'll have issues with the climate controls I think.
Other than that, the cup holders look nice. I'm sure a starbucks-like cup would fit in there just fine.

On overnighters ... I have a stove and a pot, I can just make something hot whenever I want it.
They make a 20 oz. The top is pretty genius once you use it. Actually seals totally closed (unlike most travel mugs). My only complaint is that it keeps things too hot sometimes.
I'd actually forgo the tumbler and go full on thermos. Zojirushi is a fantastic brand out of Japan and their 12/16/20oz lineup is pretty awesome (especially the pouring nozzle and locking mechanism).
I've just ordered one myself. Sure you can't steep tea in it, but you can just do that at home before you leave. At least this way your tea will stay hot or cold, depending on your preference.

Is it this one? If it is, did you happen to keep coffee in it for a while (~half a day?). I have the same problem. People on other forums tend to think that it's the non-stick coating inside that reacts with the stale coffee. IDK if it's true or not. Letting it sit in a baking soda solution, then washing it helped a bit.
It's a Contigo Autoseal Mug. I'm a huge fan because you can just take a quick swig and drop it wherever and they never leak.
For going forward, I'd get a cheap waterproof mattress cover to protect the mattress. You could also get some travel mugs like these that won't spill when knocked over. I bought a bunch of Contigo push-to-sip travel mugs and used to carry them filled with coffee in my handbag, they're that good. They're what I use when I drink coffee in bed.

I've got one of these contigo cups, and it works OK: Coffee stays hot for 3+ hours(mine rarely lasts longer than 2 :p); fits in a standards car cupholder. Kind of a pain in the dick to clean the lid though.

I've stopped using a blender and now mix it directly in my travel mug. I have a Contigo that seals completely and I just give it a minute of hard shaking and I'm all set. No blender to clean.
I'm trying to improve my mental and physical health by getting out of the house more. I've recently gotten my driving licence and a part time job and now I just try to get out and interact with the outside world.

If you have a disposable Starbucks type cup w/plastic lid that has a hole in it or a soda w/a flimsy lid from a fast food joint, yeah, he's going to nail you every time. Whether you think it's legitimate or not, the concern is over spills on equipment. Even some of the ECS rooms with no computers have had ant problems in the past because students spill their sugary drinks and it attract drones of ants. Plus, too many people don't clean up after themselves. You sound responsible (using a paper towel to prevent condensation getting on the tables or wiping it up is a good thing), but you've gotta remember not everyone else is. The responsible folks pay for those who aren't and the school isn't exactly bursting at the seams with money to take on the additional maintenance costs or the cost of replacing damaged computers, etc.
I empathize with your situation, but there are ways around the rule. Get a reusable cup that you can completely seal with a cap or airtight lid. Hydroflasks work wonders as well. He won't bitch at you if you have one of those types of cups. Just make sure you keep it sealed in between sips.

These are sealed and do not spill. To drink you squeeze the grey but on the lid. I don’t use it while riding. The advantage of these is that they keep your coffee warm like a flask but also work like a cup that reveals itself.
An easier answer is keep a small kettle and French press at work if you have the space.
Tea is the best! And stays hot for hours in one of these bad boys.
For water, invest in one of these. I've had mine for 18 months now, use it all day every day, and it still works perfectly. Fill it, add three ice cubes, and it'll stay cold all day. (Or use it for coffee in the morning, then refill with water at work.)
The locking lid seals so well you can store it upside down in your bag and it doesn't leak. Seriously worth the money and I bet I've only bought water in a bottle twice since I got it.

What I do: make a 24 oz Contigo cup of chicken broth in the morning with a splash of Frank's Red Hot and a tbsp of heavy whipping cream and drink from it throughout the day like coffee. They're OOS on the 24oz but I believe I got mine from Walmart.
I box 'em up and put it in a cooler. I have a fridge and limited stove privileges where I stay for the weekdays so that helps. Costco uncooked chapati gets a couple of minutes on a plancha then some hummus and lettuce or other veg. It's quick, adaptable, cheap, vegan, and fairly healthy.
Frittatas also work well for me, they travel okay and can do double duty as breakfast or entree. Good advice all around in this thread, but I wanted to address only your coffee portaging question. I use a Stanley vacuum thermos with a French press insert and the screw on fliptop lid. It is freaking bombproof and keeps coffee piping hot. I have used it through Colorado winters, at -20F, and had scalding hot coffee after getting to work. I got one of these from my Reddit Secret Santa last year, and I love it! A little background here. I am from Nicaragua, and i've been a coffe drinker since before i was a year old.
We are given cafe con leche mixed with sweet cookies mixed in as a mush as kids.
Anyway, i've tried all kinds of coffee brewing types. From the chorreado wich is the way the haciendas/fincas/plantations make coffee, to french pressed, cuban style (stove top), etc etc.
I am not looking for a better way to brew coffee, i basically use this little coffee maker 'cause i'm too lazy to make coffee any other way in the morning.

Dump in water, dump in coffee, press button. Costs 1/5 of a Keurig, no filters, requires a quick rinse of a filter each use. Can use any damn coffee you want forever! Seriously, Keurig has snowed all you who use them. Not to mention the damn waste. I've walked into office break rooms and seen trashcans almost running over with the stupid plastic k-cups. Keurig coffee is overpriced, the machines are overpriced, and the coffee is beyond sub par. Have you looked into one cup makers? The Brew n' Go is a more price efficient alternative to the K-cup. This model seems to exclude a hot plate on the bottom, making it follow dorm rules. You can use disposable cone filters so clean-up won't be too difficult.

Yeah, anything glass, ceramic, or stainless steel is what you want. Make sure the stainless steel isn't coated on the inside.
Some suggestions:
A roomate has a plastic reusable tumbler like the one you included in your post. I haven't smelled it, but I have noticed that it's cracked and stained brown. Avoid plastic.
I had this porcelain version of the mug you linked to for years and loved it. I was so sad when I dropped it. I really should buy a new one. Anyway, the inside was always clean, the top was easy enough to clean even if it was silicone, and the insulation was great.

Just a disclaimer, I love stronggg tea so I usually steep more than the average person hence why mine looks very leafy. Also I know most people don't drink it this way but I love that super fine strainer on top so I keep the leaves in instead of steeping for a certain amount of time. I just bought this travel mug to make tea while I'm out ( http://amzn.com/B003FGW71G ) and the packaging said to steep less tea at a lower temperature in order to avoid oversteeping/bitterness, since the tea will be sitting in the mug the whole time you're drinking it. I used about 1.5 teaspoons of jasmine pearls and water that cooled for about 5 minutes from a boil (I was at a friends place so I didn't have an electric kettle or anything) and it tasted pretty bitter still; should I use even less tea/cooler water? Or do you guys have recommendations for better brewing methods with this type of mug?

Instead of a bottle of water get this thermos. It's the best thermos I've ever used. It keeps cold for up to 6 hours, and keeps things warm even longer.

It is not quite as conventional, but I have something like this that allows me just to boil water and brew on the go. Mine even has a small screw in compartment in the bottom for additional grounds for a second brew.

It's fantastic. Keeps the contents hot for several hours. My father went and bought several of them for gifts, but he says the defect rate is relatively high. Some insulate extremely well, like a thermos. The others aren't that much better than a regular travel mug.
You can also get mugs with the press built in that just make a single serve.

We have a couple of them and they're great.
A good coarse grind. A basic blade grinder produces a wide variety of particle sizes, from largeish chunks to "fines" that will pass right through the sieve. If you don't mind the fines, that's great, but if you do, you need a better grinder. (Any of the Baratza models are good.)
There are also one-cup insulated french presses that you can take with you and drink from after plunging, so you can postpone cleanup.

I've got everything you mentioned and my wife has the Eco-brew k cups that we throw regular fresh grind in. There is no reason to re heat percolated brew, especially if you want to enjoy it.
My aero press with a reusable mesh filter is in my work or travel bag. Saves me so much money and it's one of so many press options out there.

When I moved out for the first time I went and spent a stupid amount of money at IKEA.... they are NOT BIFL at all. expecially not cookware/plates/glasses. i bought those and within 1 year everything almost broke.. not from me dropping them. but like 2 glasses actually broke in mine and my girlfriends hands when we were holding them! and 2 broke when we were washing them. with that being said..

As far as where to invest FIRST think about where you are going to be spending the most time in your house. will it be your bedroom? living room with guests or kitchen if You like to cook or man cave (this is me) and invest in quality items in the location you pick. dont buy everything at once unless you HAVE to. you will wind up wasting money on things u don't need or might want to change

I've been thinking of getting a Zojirushi travel mug, but my regular thermos still works, so I haven't found a way to excuse the expense. But the manufacturer is very well respected in the BIFL crowd, and I've heard nothing but praise for their travel mugs. If anyone is looking for one, I would recommend a Zojirushi. This one only holds 16oz (one large cup), but it will keep your tea warm for a long time. It also has a tea leaf filter, if you like to leave the leaves in you mug/cup/thermos as you drink.

Oh nono that's not what I'm doing. I'm using an infuser and steeping the amount of time they say and then discarding the leaves after. The tea I've made then gets put in a long term thermos so I can drink it throughout my day without having to reheat or drink fast (I like really hot liquids but slow sips throughout the day and that mug will keep it hot the entire day).
It does taste good to me, but I don't want to waste!
These thermoses are amazing! I personally have this one (though I just ordered the 20 ounce for work and will bring the 16 home). I just go ahead and fill mine with steeped tea, but should work well for your (OP) needs too. It can definitely keep liquids piping hot for hours at a time, even with regular opening.

I heard that it was amazing for retaining heat and also keeping drinks cool. Theres an identical 16oz version so I’m kinda on the fence as I’ve never used a thermos before.
I actually recommend this zojirushi over the one on sale because despite it being more expensive and even more phallic shaped, the lid fully opens when you press the release button. OP's thermos has a sticky latch, that while still works, is slightly annoying.

I've never heard of those mugs or bottles so I'm not familiar with them . . . But I recently just bought a Zojirushi mug that is 20 oz and I'm in love with it.
I've been able to put hot water in it before I leave for school (usually at 7am) and I have pulled it out still hot at 5pm for tea.
I have also left coffee in there with that time frame and was still able to enjoy a hot cup at 5pm until I left for home around 8pm.
It's also really cool because I've been able to lay it flat in my backpack on top of my books, laptop and binders and it doesn't leak at all. Which I was really paranoid about but after trying it out like that a few times I see now I have nothing to worry about.
In fact I've kind of gotten into the habit of showing it off by having my friends try to unlock it and test it's heat insulation.
Then I have them try to open it while the little mechanisn that allows you to lock the button that opens the mug's lid is locked. They can't so we undo the lock and it comes off pretty gently.
I usually tell them to hold it, and ask if they can feel any heat. Sometimes there's a bit of warmth but nothing that compares to what's inside. Then I take the entire lid off and tell them to hold their hand over it, and their usually surprised by the amount of steam coming off of it.

I think the difference between a drip coffeemaker and an aeropress or pour over is personal preference. The coffeemaker will generally make more coffee at once and takes longer to do so, and takes a lot more time and effort to clean. The aeropress makes 1 (or maybe 2) cups of coffee at once and requires that the drinker makes the cups manually, right before they drink them, but is very easy to clean and brews the coffee very quickly.
I do agree that a mug like this one is a great investment!
I have a Contigo Autoseal Tumbler and absolutely love it. It's super easy to clean and keeps my tea hot for a few hours (yes, hot).
As for a kettle, get him a variable temperature kettle so that he can adjust the temperature based on his tea preference. I have this Cuisinart kettle. I've had it for 4 years and still works great.

i had the old Contigo and just ordered the new version with the easier to clean lid since the old one started to taste a little odd. hoping being able to clean the lid will make a difference, otherwise i'm just going to swap to a stainless mug with a silicone lid.

I have this mug, it keeps my coffee hot for hours and it is significantly cheaper than some of the other suggestions here. Also the lid locks so I can throw it in my bag & it won't leak and it is a 20oz mug rather than 16oz. You can get it at your local big-box store for the same price as Amazon ($12).

I am a pilot and just throw this into my backpack with my $1k headsets and my IPad and my log book, and other expensive stuff with 100% confidence that it will not leak. You can was this all the time in a dishwasher and it looks as new today as it did when i bought it. $13 bucks on Amazon.

I use a Contigo travel mug for coffee. I've never tried it with soylent as I'm worried that the powder/solution would gunk up the works but I can tell you that it works incredibly well for temperature regulation, is built wicked tough, and shows no sign of rust. 10/10 would buy again.
My office has one of those weird machines that only takes their gross bagged coffee. Such a bummer!
Cold brew concentrate is a good idea- I opted for getting a good travel thermos and just bringing mine hot from home.

I don't know how hardcore of an outdoorswoman you mean, but my first thought was a hammock, too. Eno is a solid brand, but you can find hammocks for a lot cheaper with bugnets or other accessories.
But for a more pragmatic person: a water bottle, a winter hat, a pair of gloves, or a tumbler.
Small gifts that will be used often can be more meaningful, at least in my experience. Plus, you can give more than one, which makes the total gift seem larger

Points for the Contico bottle. I have 4 in my household. Best bedside bottle ever. Keeps water ice cold overnight and then some, plus is designed with a top where you can drink easily without having to lift your head from the pillow. Seriously an amazing bottle.

I've had that Secura press for 3 years now, and I have to say it's been fantastic. If you want to make less coffee I suggest stacking two screens together to get a better extraction with less water.

This thing is simply amazing. I once did a test and left hot water in it- after 22 hours, it was still too hot to touch.
The coffee press also allows for freshly brewed coffee on the fly, which I find super convenient on hikes and camping trips - since I got this mug, I never used my other collapsible hiking coffee drip again.

One thing I would consider is how long you want your coffee to stay hot, some of the better mugs almost hold coffee too hot for hours. I usually have to drop an ice cube in my coffee, or leave it open for 30 minutes.
