I doubt I'd play with it much beyond a day because it's a bit big for a keychain and I'm not an alcoholic, but it's $3

I try to find cool stuff like this for /r/INEEEEDIT, my sub. If you like stuff like this you'd probably like the subreddit too.

I have a few of these. They feel kind of flimsy, but work surprisingly well. Get them here:

Keychain: nite-ize S-biner bottle opener 2.98 (it's really useful to clip onto belt loops etc for cycling)

Wallet: A6 leather notebook cover wallet w/ pen loop - 36.99( fantastic thing to have i would imagine, a6 is w bit larger than "field notes")

Pen: Kaweco Sport in blue. 24.94 (It is the space pen of fountain pens)

Knife: Case Sodbuster in american workman blue - 24.98 (I am a sucker for a traditional slip-joint)

Light: Maglite Solitaire in blue 9.43 (very tiny and pocketable, 40 lumen, made in the USA!)

It comes to 99 and change

I need this.

Edit: Found it, Cap Zappa.

u/_Giant_ · 34 pointsr/BuyItForLife

Fancy corkscrews are one of the biggest rip off schemes out there. All you need is a double hinged waiter’s corkscrew. They last forever and are super easy to use once you figure it out.

Pulltap's Double-Hinged Waiters Corkscrew, Black and Stainless Steel https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0055OGPWS/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_i_utXvCbRTZNJWX

u/petrus_and_coke · 31 pointsr/BuyItForLife

The Pulltap's "waiter's friend" like this one is the way to go. The two key features are the teflon-coated worm, which can be replaced when the teflon coating wears out, and the two-step "foot" the you use for leverage to pull the cork. It requires only marginally more effort than the Rabbit style and all of its various copies thanks to the double action. I've been in the wine business for more than 5 years and this is what virtually everyone in the field uses every day.

The Rabbits have several moving parts that tend to wear out and break after awhile. Rabbits also don't work very well with synthetic corks- they have a nasty habit of punching them into the bottle. The winged style and and its ilk usually have very thick worms which can shred the cork and cause it to crumble in to the bottle. This is particularly a problem with corks on older bottles which tend to be more delicate. It probably goes without saying, but those battery powered and gas-pressured openers are complete gimmicks and not worth the hassle or the money.

Speakers will make your life so much better. I'd recommend getting a shower speaker too, your flatmates will love you.

A door stop is the right answer.

If you get a memory foam mattress topper your life will be so much better. It makes any bed amazing, and, although they aren't particularly cheap, they can last a very long time. I have this one

Get some good quality pens and books of paper. You don't want the refil pads as they always fall apart sooner or later, get some which have metal binding on one side. For pens I always got a box of these or these. They make the vast amounts of notes you need to take much better.

Don't buy the recommended reading until you have checked how many copies the library has. There's a good chance you'll be able to read them enough without paying for them, or search Bookname.pdf into google and it will probably be there.

Pint glasses are very useful things to have, but I found it added a nice touch to my flat if they were all borrowed from pubs.

get a multipack of playing cards on the cheap from amazon. You'll probably get through a fair few packs in first year. Some poker chips were a nice thing to own as well. In 3rd year I got Cards Against humanity as well, and it is a very good game for predrinks

Get minimum 1 good frying pan, 1 good saucepan, a good wooden chopping board, a good chefs knife, a baking sheet, and a colander.

Get a bottle opener like this one and you will have hours of fun pinging the caps at people

I didn't use mine much in 1st year, but all the other years of uni my bike was a great thing to have. It allows you to shop further away (so cheaper) and reduces your reliance on public transport. It also means you can get out of your area of the city occasionally, which is nice.

A french press means you can make a whole pot of great coffee for your flatmates when you are all getting up after a heavy night, at which point they might crown you or start worshiping you or some shit

u/mikeygigs18 · 13 pointsr/ofcoursethatsathing

First off. Only carry keys you need. This is one of my pet peeves. I have Two sets of keys. One for work, another for home. My car key uses RFID so that always stays in my front left pocket or my man purse. Work keys stay in my man purse because that ALWAYS goes with me to work. House keys stay in a single key ring that only has four keys, mail key, gate key, door key, bottle opener- these always go in my back left pocket. Whenever I go to sit, I pull them out and lay them on the table.

u/kratosauron0 · 8 pointsr/CGPGrey

Suggestions for improving your pocket experience, based on my experience with trying to minimize the amount of stuff in my pockets:

  1. Try using a smaller pen. In particular, the Fisher Bullet Space Pen is incredibly small, but when the cap is attached to the back of the pen, it becomes full sized.
You'd probably have to do something similar for your stylus (although what is a stylus useful for on an iPhone?)

  2. Get a carabiner for your keys and move them to a belt loop, if you don't have many keys.

  3. Get a smaller wallet. This is especially feasible if your wallet mainly just contains cards; there are a number of minimalist wallet solutions available; the one I ended up using was the TGT 2.0, which was based off using a rubber band (and is generally only useful for keeping your cards together).
But of course, you have to pick one that works for you, and none of them will hold coins, and most don't hold bills well either.

I also wouldn't really trust those door locking / unlocking apps; they're generally finicky and require trading security for minor convenience. Not to mention what happens if your phone gets stolen. Or runs out of battery. Or the power goes out. And, of course, you're keyless at that point :|
u/oldaccount · 8 pointsr/BuyItForLife

I've gotten a bunch of these over the years as free giveaways with some company's logo on it. They are cheap, light and as long as you don't abuse them I see no reason why they are not BIFL. I've never broken one.

u/reverendj1 · 5 pointsr/Homebrewing

What /u/chino_brews said is exactly right. I have done the same thing minus the penny many times when I had gushers. I just want to add a few things.

  1. Use a big bottle opener. Preferably a bar blade. This will give you the leverage and ability to just burp the cap. You don't want anything that you have to futz with at all.

  2. You aren't removing the cap. You are just lifting it enough that gas can escape and then letting it back down when the foam hits the cap. The cap should reseat itself fine if you did it right, but keep the capper handy.

  3. This isn't a one and done thing. You will probably need to do this several times to get them down to the right pressure. IME, you need to wait at least a couple hours for the pressure to equalize before you can do it again. Doing it about 5-7 times should be a good starting point, but be careful of gushers when opening them still, as you won't know for sure that you are on point, or that the same amount of gas escaped from each one.

Pulltap's

The real ones are expensive to buy in the US because shipping them from Spain is expensive compared to their price. Any of the "Pulltap's" ones on Amazon are good though, even if they don't seem to be completely authentic. This one is like $9 shipped and works really really well. Once you use it and feel how awesome the double hinge is, you'll wonder why you used that thing for so long.

u/caseyjosephine · 4 pointsr/wine

I generally recommend getting great accessories, instead of wine itself. I've often been gifted wine by people who aren't into it; of course, I completely appreciate the gifts, but often they're just not to my taste.

Here are a few accessories that I love, that I think would be a great gift for someone who doesn't have them:

  • Decanter
  • High-quality double-hinged corkscrew (doesn't have to be expensive; I use this one at work and it's awesome
  • An Ah So opener, if he's into older wine.
  • Ice buckets or marble wine chillers
  • Nice stemware

If you must get wine, I will say that the only wine I'm always happy to receive as a gift is Champagne.

Bottle opener.

Magnet. (preferably 25-50lbf pull force)

Douglas Fir 2x4 (only need a foot of lumber)

Cutting tools I used are:

  • Drill press w/ boring drill bit sized to your magnet's diameter.

  • Handsaw, or table saw that can cut your 2x4 to size.

  • Powered drill to mount your bottle opener to 2x4

  • For aesthetics, use sand paper, wood stainer and wax to make your shitty 2x4 look good and water resistant.

It's pretty simple. You just have to have a positive mindset of finishing it no matter what.

Source: I did a lot of woodworking in the past.

It's a fun and easy project and you can get all the stuff on Amazon. This is the one I got, but you can find several others in designs such as your favorite sportsball teams, etc. I just picked a random cap catcher to go along with it, but you can use a magnet or really anything you want.

> a bartender could edc this

I get what you're saying. If a bartender might "work EDC" one of these then maybe he'd work-EDC a PLOPR. But a PLOPR is not functional in a bar setting. As the video shows, to pop off a cap with the popping sound requires such force that the bottle cap can be launched into the ceiling. You certainly wouldn't want bottlecaps flying around like that in a bar, so no, this is useless for a bartender.

Weird, so how long did you condition prior to the six days in fridge?

Depending on how scared I am, I will usually keep them in the fridge and drink a couple before I dump. But depending how nervous you are, just get it out of the way now might be a good option. Bottle bombs just aren't worth the hassle of one batch. Also if it is a bug, the flavor will eventually be affected.

I get them all in the fridge to tame the gas a bit. After a day, If they are calm, open and dump, if they are still beastly and scare the shit out of you, do this:

Take them to the sink, one-by-one, wrapped with a big beach towel with about 3 folds around the bottle. I then unwrap the top, so there is only one layer of towel on the cap, and then use a flat bottle opener over that one layer of towel. By the end of opening them all, the towel will be drenched and probably the floor too.

It's not a leatherman, but I do get a small knife through security every time. I've even had a TSA agent pull it out of my bag, hold it in his hand and say, "Nothing sharp here." then put it back in my bag.

Get yourself a KeysSmart keychain. Not only will it help get your knife through, but they are incredibly handy and you might not want to go back to a regular key ring again.

Then, go on Amazon and get this knife: https://www.amazon.com/SOG-Key-Folding-Knife-KEY-101/dp/B00LUHR71W/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1500075053&sr=8-1&keywords=sog+key+knife

I use one at school and love it. And it have been around for several years. Meaning, in a school, its pretty bullet proof.

At home, I use a DeWalt. Live that one too.

One thing, though, too look for in a 1/4 sheet sander: How to change the paper. That PC, without having a paint can opener, is a pain in the ass to change. Used a screw driver for a while, which works, but not well. That can opener really makes it much easier. However, the others, with a bar that hooks down, are easier still.

$350 is a good chunk of change to spend.

As far as wallets go, I just use an old leather business card holder so I won't be much help there.

I did quite a bit of research before getting my knife—weight, size, blade type, the way it opened, etc—before landing on the Ontario Rat II. But now I want a Benchmade. And a Kershaw. And a CRKT.

As far as carabiners go, I've used all types, but am currently using—and liking—the S-biner with the bottle opener.

Once I got a pocket flashlight, I caught myself using it daily (at night). That particular pocket light has some relief cuts that make it "self-defensy".

I try to keep it simple and functional, but it's all about how you're going to use it. Hell, you could spend $300 on a knife, $20 on a light, put $10 in your pocket and call it a day.

Dad worked in restaurants growing up (Like really a nice one that sold copious amounts of wine), I only heard them referred to as wine keys. Corkscrews were just the screw and cross bar thingy you pulled on. Wine Keys also have the little knife (for removing foil) a bottle opener and uses leverage rather than just pulling to open.

That’s a wine opener that looks like it would work well. I definitely like the real knife blade. But damn that’s steep. From the pic, I’d have guessed $50-60.

What you're looking for:

  • Double hinged fulcrum. See the metallic part, how there's one hinge at the base and a second hinge in the middle? That gives you a metric fuckton more leverage than you can get from any other design that I've seen that isn't some $200 countertop appliance/medieval torture device.
  • All metal. If it's built out of plastic... yeah, that happens.
  • Serrated blade. Other people like the smooth blade, but I don't know why; you're using glass a cutting surface, the blade will dull. Quickly. And it doesn't need to be sharp, a serrated blade can simply grab and tear the foil. A smooth blade will be superior the first two or three times you open a bottle, but never again.
  • Actually decent quality construction. Don't get something made in China. In the cheap ones, nothing lines up, the joins are all loose, it feels wrong in your hand, etc.

I'm thinking about buying like 10 of these and handing them out to all my friends with shitty bottle openers. I was at a party at my friend's house last night, someone asked me to open a bottle of wine, because no one knew how to do it, and I'm "the wine guy" and I look in the drawer and there a bunch of those insufferable wing ones. It didn't go well.

In the meantime, grab some pliers, untwist the worm maybe one full rotation, and put some back into it. You'll probably spill some wine.

Where did you buy it?

I spend some time in touristy bars where they sell beer by the thousands and I always see the bartenders using flat openers like this. They are easy to slip into the back pocket or under an armband and provide a lot of leverage for cans or bottles to pop easily. When I decided to do the same thing for myself I picked this one up. It's a fantastic key, it's a little heavy so if it's always going to be in your pocket keep that in mind and you can't pop the knife with just one hand, not a big deal, but you know how often that comes in handy. Other than that I love this key, feels very premium, I've had quite a few coworkers check it out and ask about it. It's been about 6 months using it 10 times a day minimum and it feels brand new. I'd be surprised if it doesn't last as long as I will.

False.

The tool that has a spiral metal thing that you put into a cork to remove it is called a "cork screw."

The tool that waiters at fancy restaurants carry with them that contains a cork screw, a small knife, and a can opener, is called a "wine key."

Edit Proof: A wine key contains a small knife which the waiter uses to cut the foil covering the cork. The can opener looking device is used to provide leverage to use the cork screw.
