They’re peel and stick tiles I think. Thick plastic stickers, basically.

Edit: Upon closer inspection, it looks like she routed out a shallow impression for the tiles to sit in, and possibly sealed it all afterwards with some polyurethane or something. If so, it should be pretty durable.

I have some in my bathroom (regular tile/grout in an RV will crack from vibration) and I imagine the edges of it on the countertop will be difficult to clean properly, especially on a porous surface like wood, and may begin to lift after the adhesive on the edges is degraded by dirt/friction/moisture/cleaning products. Depending how the wood is finished/sealed, it may lift a lot sooner. If it does, they can just take a utility knife and cut it at the seam between the wall/countertop. Might take some solvent to fully remove the adhesive from the wood, though, which will likely damage the finish.

My first thought when I saw it was that they weren’t sure about cutting the sheet of tiles, so they just kept pressing it down onto the counter. So yeah, unique looking, but I anticipate issues after some use.

Yes, it was DIY. It was virtually impossible by myself though. With the help of my wife, it was pretty easy. You need another person or something to hold up multiple tiles to the ceiling at once because they all over lap. We just screwed them into the wood above the plaster ceiling. They are plastic so no big risk for falling on someone.

I used these. There are other colors available. It was tough to pick a color. We picked a color we thought went with the furniture in the room best.

I'd paint the interior black to visually balance the TV, and then I'd put in some books, a plant, a few low candles. I'd also look into those sticker things made to cover backsplash tiles to make a border around the fireplace, ideally a pattern with some black in it.

The sidebar with the forum rules specifically say: "Do not suggest or discuss piracy" so I'm thinking we can't talk about this. LOL. JK.

I'm thinking make the ship magical - get it flying with fireball cannons; be ready to fight the white dragons of the north, sea monsters, and enemy ships. You could also have characters spy on/infiltrate the competition. If you have druids/swimmers you could take out ships from under the water.

If you use minis, here's some links to some cool ship matts:

We used these: TicTacTiles. Slightly 3-d so they look more realistic

I feel like the best you can do as a renter is decorate. I'd dress it up with a cute rug and matching dish towels, some big pottery or baskets on top of the cabinets, and check out the sticker tile options on Amazon for a backsplash! Maybe the contact paper on the counters thing if you can handle that big of an undertaking but I've never seen it done irl so I'm skeptical.

normal
shiny!!
colorful
blue

In general I'd go for a cute and colorful aesthetic > trying to make the existing finishes seem fancy/elegant.

If you like bright rooms, you might try to find a more modern yellow color that you like that will pick up the flecks in that counter. I like these two for bright colors:

In other random suggestions from an internet stranger, there is such a thing as peel & stick countertop. "Instant granite". It is getting pretty decent reviews online. I have no experience with it myself, but you do not have a ton of counter space, and it is fairly affordable in small pieces. So if you get it and hate it, it would not be a big deal to get rid of. You might like the kitchen better if you didn't feel your counter came from hell. And then you could do whatever color scheme you've always dreamed of.

For example:

Great Falls for the wall color: https://www.sherwin-williams.com/homeowners/color/find-and-explore-colors/paint-colors-by-family/SW6495-great-falls#/6495/?s=coordinatingColors&p=PS0
White Marble on the counters: https://www.amazon.com/Instant-Granite-Adhesive-Laminate-Application/dp/B00DSRG376
And a touch of fake backsplash for fun (I'd use half the height of what is shown): https://www.amazon.com/Art3d-Stick-Kitchen-Backsplash-Sticker/dp/B01AJ4O8FO/

that floor tho..... I hope you get the laminates.

You’re welcome!

I bought them from Amazon here: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B073NSLNXH

I bought three 10 packs of the 12x12 totaling about $100 at the time. I live in a townhouse myself so I didn’t need a lot, that gave me just enough to have extra in case I messed up. Amazon seems to have some cheaper ones now though, just search “peel and stick subway tile” to bring them up. Maybe if you can find one that’s not quite so sticky you’ll be okay.

Honestly, if you are in love with the aesthetic I would do it. It makes me smile to see something I love that I did myself.

I got them as tiles

Yeah, tape at the back along the seem or those gluey dots you get when a kid's magazine needs to stick a cheap little toy to the cover, like http://www.amazon.co.uk/Glue-Dots-Mini-Roll-clear/dp/B0021WPZMI

Where they like these, only blue or these, or more like these mosaic tiles?

It's all cork bark:
https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07F28QRG9
https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07CXM5H1Q
I got a few chunks of each and cut them to size as needed. The same sealant you would use to hold the tank together will work for attaching it to the glass, but I've found that gorilla glue works best when attaching the porous surfaces of the cork pieces together (as long as you give it at least 7-14 days to cure before submerging in water).

And to give a little more detail on the hardscape down below, I found some really neat looking sandstone rocks near and abandoned quarry near where I live in addition to random pieces of driftwood. I also did a 4 to 1 mixture of ada Amazonia soil and Colorado sand, which helps keep the slope more stable along with some cut up pieces of corrugated plastic which I used to make a bit of a terrace. And right now I have a little water basin in the sandy corner so I can suck out any excess water from the misters with a turkey baster lol.

This works well.

u/funderbunk · 1 pointr/plastidip

you might be better off using something like this.

u/ToMakeYouMad · 1 pointr/InteriorDesign

My personal recomendation would be use copper or metal ceiling tiles and cut them to fit in a squre pattern on the wall above the cabinets. It will become a focal point and make your kitchen look amazing. Copper Tiles or Metallic Tiles

u/SirJelly · 1 pointr/rpg

They come in this size and shape, but adhered to a 1 square foot sheet of plastic mesh. http://www.amazon.com/White-Marble-Hexagon-Mosaic-Meshed/dp/B001E36ZOM

Its a giant pain in the arse to clean all the adhesive off of the tiles and separate them from that mesh, but easier i think than manually cutting them.

separating, sanding, and hand painting all the tiles seen in the picture took about 8 hours for both me and my girlfriend (though we messed up several of them and ended up throwing them out). I think we will make more of them to sell, but instead of hand painting every tile we can spray paint them the bulk color, and will hand paint little graphics, scan them in and print stickers. That eliminates at least half of the work. I addition, I've talked to a tile supplier and he seems to think it wouldn't be hard to get a hold of some tiles before polishing and adherence to the plastic mesh, so we could essentially get them ready to paint.
