Do you not have a bath tub? Showers can definitely be traumatic for little ones... mine both hated showers until closer to age 5.

My daughter also hated baths, and we had struggles exactly like the ones that you described. You can't force this to go better, you just need to take this at whatever speed she is comfortable with. We tried to force baths and it was just a nightmare. You may need to consider a super short hair cut for a while in order to avoid all of the hair maintenance. My daughter had to have short hair until 1st grade when she was more willing to tolerate all of the care (brushing/etc) it took.

My son, on the other hand, loved baths. We let him wear his goggle/mask in the tub & then he had no fear of water on the face/eyes. We just washed his hair with the mask on. This also helped with swimming immensely - he wore the kind of goggles that have a nose piece too... so was always willing to jump into the pool (and could dive to the bottom to retrieve rings/toys at the age of 3!!).

Definitely ditch the shower if you've got a tub & take it slow for her. Showers feel scary to lots of kids.

>this woman is diving with a $5 mask

I'd like to know where you can get a Mares X-Vision Ultra Liquidskin for $5.

>...and a bikini

I've been on dives with women in bikinis and dudes in boardshorts. Some places do have warm water. Even PADI promo videos have people dressed as such.

Shit on it for other design flaws, but a cheap (or not) mask and lack of a wet/dry suit don't really make sense.

From their kickstarter page, it does suggest it's aimed at trained divers.
>Proper dive training is crucial for your comfort and safety. Dive responsibly, know your limits and never go to a depth you don't feel comfortable ascending from in case of an emergency, certainly not without any 100% redundant back-up system.

>...Whereas SCUBA (or rebreathers) are virtually irreplaceable on deep dives or dives with overhang (caves, wrecks), AirBuddy is perfect for hassle-free shallow water dives. Same sport, different use case, different gear. Just like road bike vs. mountain bike or cross country ski vs. downhill ski

There are special ear covers that you can use! Two of my marine biologist friends have ruptured their eardrums and use these:

I'll be honest, those ear muffs are a real pain in the butt, but they keep your ears totally dry. And bonus, you won't have any problems equalizing!

u/magus · 5 pointsr/scuba

Diving + earplugs = bad idea. There are some special masks with tubes that connect the ears and the nasal area - check here.

Freedivers can use the normal pinch-nose technique (called Valsalva equalization) for diving up to 30ish meters.

For deeper dives the volume of air in the lungs is too small for the lungs to be able to push it up all the way to the eardrums. Advanced techniques are needed (such as the Frenzel maneuver). You can find more info here for example. Most of them use the tongue or jaw in some way to push the air from the mouth area, through the eustachian tubes up against the eardrums.

These techniques will work up to a certain depth (not sure exactly which, but let's say 120m or so.

However, the current world record for freediving is 214m. How is that possible? Well, a select few world-class freedivers use a technique where they stop during the dive and inject their cavities (eustachian tubes, sinuses etc.) with fluid. Since fluids are incompressible, there's no need to equalize anymore and you can go to whatever depth.

It turns out that depth is around 250m though (that's what Herbert Nitsch reached in an attempt, but had an incident - you can find more online). Also I've heard theories of your larynx getting crushed when you reach a certain depth.

You don't need to do this. Swim in swim goggles, don't worry about fins. Buying this stuff beforehand is just throwing money down the drain.

But to answer your question: rocket fins and mask

Waste of money though.

Try these. I had the same problem, and these helped immensely. They are available on Amazon as well: https://www.amazon.com/Scuba-Diving-Mask-around-Protection/dp/B0021OZ1PW

Well, get a mask that accepts prescription lenses. It should come with plain lenses (I have one) and it was not all that expensive. Then see if a local eye glass shop can attach lenses to it. My goggles with lenses was about $150 - but my prescription isn't that rare.

I've got a Mares Viper and it's awesome. I've written an Amazon review that can be found here if you're interested. Cool pic of me with some fish wearing it too. https://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/review/B00PG8SNQY/R7DPHB4E92C72/ref=cm_cr_dp_mb_rvw_1?ie=UTF8&cursor=1
You really have to find one that fits you best though. Learn how to proudly fit test a mask, the five shop should be able to help with this.

here is the link

It says tempered right on the mask as well.

This is super awesome, but not really WL worthy due to the impracticality of buying masks online.

I suppose I'll go with this scarf for the cold winter, although it might be more fashionable, and less of a practical warm scarf. Its on my gf's list, what do I know? :p

Also, have you checked out the Aqua Lung Slingshot fins? I love them, they are for sure my favorite fins I've owned, the power you can put out is incredible. I know they're a bit pricey, especially for random WL items, but thought I'd mention them for fun. How awesome is Costa Rica? It's been awhile since I was there, but I loved it. I spent 1.5 years living in The Bahamas and then moved back to Canada, so I really understand those feels :p

u/seamus_mc · 2 pointsr/scuba

my fiancé loves this one When we got it I think the lenses were $25 each

My recommendation looks like this:

  1. Buy your own gear. Once you go, you're going to want to return, especially once it's free. Check craigslist and local dive shops that sell used gear if you want to save a little money. Don't buy junk. Companies that don't make junk: Riffe, ScubaPro, Mares, Cressi. Go for black silicone as it ages much, much better than clear, which yellows. Don't mess about with dry snorkels (the ones that close with a float when you go underwater), they just get in the way and cost more money. You'll need fins (full heel if you don't want to buy booties), mask, snorkel.

  2. Start off at Marine Room (parking is easier), go out a couple dozen yards and start swimming north. You'll see some sharks!

  3. Head on over to the cove, the scenery is lots prettier, there's a larger variety of fish but there's fewer sharks and rays.

This is my set-up: Snorkel, mask, fins. But I like overkill. You'd do fine with this: Mask + Snorkel, fins. I'd also recommend some socks to prevent chafing.

Once you're in, you're in so expect to be buying weight belts, wetsuits and spearguns in the near future. Have fun and see you out there!

as MajorMess has said, using a normal pair of swimming goggles is a terrible idea if you're looking to do diving (it may well be the reason you're having so much trouble). The important bit of a diving mask for you is that it lets you relieve the pressure around your eyes as well as your ears. Waiting to buy fancy fins or a spectacular mask is fine, however without a basic mask you're going to have a hell of a time getting comfortable underwater.

(even the cheapest snorkeling masks from amazon will do, I personally use a superocchio because it's not that much and damn near unbreakable).

Also from MajorMess, your breathing technique will make a massive difference to your ability (and you should make sure you're comfortable with your breath hold before testing it in a dive). This website goes over some very basic ideas for breathing techniques, or for more on that kind of breathing I'd have a look at pranayama.

Now some masks for you to have a quick look at, since I really can't recommend getting one enough:

You 100% don’t need a prescription unless your eyes have heavy astigmatism etc. You can buy standard corrective lenses (-1,-1.5,2 etc.) from some companies and put them in your mask yourself. I got a 1.5 in my right and a 1 in my left and put them in myself and it works great for about a fourth of the cost of prescription lenses. Here are the lenses that I used: Cressi Optical Lens -3.0 Diapter for Focus Mask https://www.amazon.com/dp/B007EI4WO6/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_i_RwMgDb2CSGKNW

Have you seen these? https://smile.amazon.com/dp/B008OJDRQI/ref=twister_B002JY1ICO

The cups go over your ears and completely seal them off. They have a silicone skirt like on the mask and tubes connected to the mask for proper equalization. My husband uses them to snorkel and lightly free dive (to around 25 ft) because he still has a hole in one ear from tubes. I can't personally vouch for them for actual diving since we're not certified yet, but there are people on scubaboard.com who have used them for actual diving, which is where I first read about it. You might wanna look up the discussions on it. Even if you don't outright dive, it could at least get you back under water.

My husband could never submerge his head at all his whole life until he got this mask. If he so much as gets water in his ear during a shower he gets an infection. It opened up a whole new world to him that he otherwise never could have experienced. The only down side is you HAVE to shave your head smooth pretty high up your head, because any hair will keep the cups from sealing just like with facial hair and a mask. So you either need to have a weird haircut or just shave completely bald.

This is a great, affordable mask, especially in white.

Cressi is one of the oldest water-sports manufacturers in the world, having made the first mask with a nose pocket.

There are some options.... Vented ear plugs have helped some people (such as Doc's Pro Plugs).

http://www.amazon.com/Scuba-Diving-Mask-around-Protection/dp/B0021OZ1PW
This is also a possible option. I have heard some positive things, but you may need to shave your head to get a proper seal, I don't know.

edit* You should seek out a Doctor who is also a diver to review these options with. Many MDs don't properly understand diving, I work at a dive shop and you should hear the crazy shit people's Doctors have told them.

Having thrashed many pairs of gloves i would highly recommend Cressi Tropical gloves

You may want to try these. I've never kited with them, but they seal/cover your eyes completely and have good peripheral vision as well. Only down side is that the suction can be strong and you can look a bit like a raccoon for an hour or so afterwards.

As far as diving goes, there is a type of mask that covers your ears as well. A few of the instructors I've worked with in the past have used them. Pretty sure your dreams of diving haven't been totally crushed.

Here's an example
