>[DV] is still fairly balanced in terms of the numbers of victims and perpetrators of each sex, so referring to it as 'violence against women' erases male victims, and as 'men's violence against women' erases both male victims and female perpetrators.
This isn't true. The "gender symmetry" argument relies on bad methodologies that overemphasise low-level violence (which is either mutual or occasional) and understate the levels of really horrific battering. This latter kind of violence - which most warrants intervention and activism - is something done almost entirely by men to women.
More worryingly with regards to your comment, gender symmetry is pushed by Men's Rights groups as a way to de-gender domestic violence policy (as well as Straus, fuck you Straus), and by extension roll back the gains which have been made in addressing it (the gendered nature of domestic violence laws existing because ordinary criminal legislation on assault was not enough to prosecute or prevent batterers). It's actually the only significant danger MRAs present in the real world/at all, because on the face of it their case is convincing, especially if you're uninformed about the wider scientific consensus. Dragiewicz has done really good work at both critiquing the gender symmetrical literature, and laying out exactly why MRAs have this agenda and how they push it.
Obviously male survivors do exist and deserve special attention, but it not appropriate to design policies under the impression that domestic violence is not a gendered problem or that male survivors make up a substantial number of cases.
I have a copy of Equality with a Vengance. But I haven't read it yet.
If you like what she had to say in that debate you should read her book on "Rape Culture".
In fact everyone trying to understand this bullshit feminist myth should read Wendy's book.

Susan Estrich has an awesome book about this subject. It's called Real Rape. If this topic interests you, you'd probably find that book fascinating.
Um, that example is not a from of misogyny from men, it was coming from a woman. This book debunks the rape culture hysteria in US colleges. It was written by a female rape survivor. You have to spend money to get it though.

Second wave feminists played a significant role in promoting the idea that rape is "about power". When radical feminists tried to argue against rape culture they were frequently met with the criticism that feminists are just "anti-sex". In other words, that feminist opposition to rape comes from an opposition to heterosexual sexual expression. As a result, second wave feminists framed rape as an expression of patriarchial power rather than sexual desire. At least that is what Catherine MacKinnon argues: https://www.amazon.ca/Feminism-Unmodified-Discourses-Life-Law/dp/0674298748
Dean Spade is one of -- if not the -- most genius person writing on trans issues. His new book will be a must-read.

Not sure why I'm arguing with you when you've admitted you haven't read the article, but I'm bored at the moment.
> Your wikki definition & the definition of radical feminism I was tested on in turn-of-the millennium, BY "radical" gender studies professors, are different. This just takes "first wave" feminism & attaches a "radical" modifier to it. These things are far, far too grey to be discussed in the context of such a biased article. Feel free to disagree with me.
That particular wikipedia article describes the other viewpoints in 2nd wave feminism:
> Radical feminists locate the root cause of women's oppression in patriarchal gender relations, as opposed to legal systems (as in liberal feminism) or class conflict (as in socialist feminism and Marxist feminism).
So no, not all 2nd wave feminists were radical by that definition, only those that focus on attacking notions of the patriarchy. Also, Catherine MacKinnon falls undeniably into the radical feminist camp (under the traditional definition of radical). Her book "Feminism Unmodified" is generally seen as a radical feminist critique on the concepts of liberal feminism.
EDIT: Terminology. Radical feminism and liberal feminism are both 2nd wave feminist groups. 1st wave feminism was the turn of the century suffrage movement.

Wendy's good people
The Men's Rights Movement is explicitly an antifeminist movement. It is rooted in being a backlash to feminism. That's, like, history of the movement 101. The single most defining aspect. How did you miss something that blatant?
Read a book sometime: http://www.amazon.com/Equality-Vengeance-Battered-Antifeminist-Northeastern/dp/1555537391
Or, barring that, Wikipedia.
Its not an issue of feminists 'screeching' so much as acknowledging reality and rejecting antifeminism on its face.
Someone wrote an opposing book called "How to Destroy a Man in One Easy Step: MEN; Guilty Until Proven Innocent!".
Here is the summary:
>The book is about abuses of the domestic violence laws. I am an attorney in Pennsylvania.I was a victim of domestic violence. As a former victim of Domestic Violence, any violence makes me sad.As a conscientious attorney, the widespread abuse of the Domestic Violence Laws makes me sick.Victims of domestic violence need help! They need more shelters and more counselors. They need a criminal justice system that will punish the abusers and put them in jail! HOWEVER, this has to be done through the criminal justice system and through due process. It has to be taken out of civil court. Men's rights have to be protected as well as the women's rights. The current system is being seriously abused and the potential for continuing abuse is astronomical! Vindictive women and unscrupulous attorneys have made a total mockery out of the current system and way too many innocent men are serving a "life sentence" because of it!

>Even if someone were a bona fide rapist all that happens is that they are told to go somewhere else and do their thing...no criminal sanctions for a criminal act.
Horsefeathers. Not only "bona fide rapists" but also completely innocent young men are expelled, denied due process, denied opportunity to defend or cross-examine, with notations upon their transcripts which follow them all their lives, frequently preventing employment and matriculation. Their lives are destroyed. The situation is only a bit better than that of black men accused by white women a century ago.

Beyond just the (accurate) comparison to interracial marriage arguments, there have been studies done on countries with varying levels of marriage rights, and those with full marriage rights aren't appreciably different from those without in any significant measure. This seems a bit obvious to most people, but regardless, the hard evidence is right there.
Speaking as a gay man, it's frustrating, but luckily there's an ever increasing acceptance in the younger generations that will eventually wash away the bigots in the older generations that are blocking this progress.
Women and the Law: Stories available here.
>This book examines landmark cases establishing women’s legal rights, offering accounts of the litigants, history, parties, strategies, and theoretical implications.
I thought it was a great book because it very thoroughly discusses context, historical and otherwise. The authors analyze every detail of each case from pretrial all the way up through each level of the legal system. They also carefully scrutinize the Supreme Court decisions and underlying rationales, and foreground each decision's implications. The chapters on Vorchheimer and VMI were brilliant.

When I was in college I took an elective on the law and society. We had to read a book about a murder of some notoriety, known as the "Yale murder." The book was The Killing of Bonnie Garland: A Question of Justice, by Willard Gaylin.
When I got to the actual part where the "boyfriend" (or ex, or stalker -- I can't remember) sneaks into the woman's bedroom in the middle of the night and hits her in the head, repeatedly, with a hammer, I was so disgusted and angry that I threw the book across the room.
If you need more Scholarly book then I can suggest The Origin of Buddhist Meditation (Routledge Critical Studies in Buddhism). It compares the both in technical terms and I think worth reading.
