This is kind of small, and there aren't photos or anything, but it has some basic recipes and different anecdotes about different regions and different food traditions: http://www.amazon.com/Great-German-Recipes-editor/dp/1932043500/ref=pd_sim_b_4?ie=UTF8&refRID=0T5CD98DECMQ391HVMAD

I got it as a gift many years ago and left with my mom when I moved.

For basic German cooking the Dr. Oetker cookbooks are good. There is a English version but I only have the German books: https://www.amazon.com/German-Cooking-Today-Oetker-Verlag/dp/3767009331/

For Hasenpfeffer I found to recipes that are comparable to the German ones

I have several recipes that have grated potatoes, from the book, The Cuisines of Germany by Horst Scharfenberg The Cuisines if Germany

Did your Mom's recipe included with the grated potatoes either,

  1. Fried bread cubes/croutons -- I have several with variations of this

  2. Bacon (cut into squares) and bread crumbs

  3. Just grated potatoes

My German host mom gave me the Dr. Oetker Schulkochbuch as an Easter gift almost 20 years ago. It's all in German, but there are awesome photos for each recipe showing you what to. Worst case you have to Google a few words. I think that this might be the English version, but I haven't examined http://www.amazon.com/German-Cooking-Today-The-Original/dp/3767003708
