Congrats on getting back into the game -- definitely a potentially fun move.

Start with lessons and go from there. See if it's just an itch or you really want to get into it. The golf pro should have everything you need for the lesson -- maybe you'll buy a glove or something. learning the swing on your own may just ingrain a poor swing plane and bad habits.

Depending on how good your game is, go and either get fitted at a golf store or go on craigslist/ebay and find something reasonable and then get measured and have the clubs adjusted to your body measurements (length and lie, should cost about $45 for a whole set - you might not even need any adjustment). Your welcome to snag something off the rack at your golf store if those price tags work for you.

Accessories: Don't blow a bunch of money on ProV1 golf balls. A divot tool is a good idea. A ballmarker (a quarter or whatever) is nice to have if you're out there with other people. Buy stuff as you need them -- there's no need to go running out and buying random items.

But yea, bottom line is investing in instruction. Pounding golf balls on the range with your buddies is definitely fun but I'd prioritize instruction -- I think the best way to do it would be to go with your bud and get a group lesson if he's into lessons as well. You'll probably get a moderately discounted rate and it'll be more fun than spending 30 or 40 bucks to go hack around the course all day.

I have this one. It's cool to play with while you are waiting for the group infront of you to get out of the tee box and it works just fine as a divot tool. It gets bonus points from me because my shorts have mesh pockets and this is the only divot tool that won't get tangled up in there.

I hate having stuff in my pockets but I love having this clipped onto my belt. Its everything I need.

Since I mostly ride I only have extra balls/tees in my pocket for my teeshots.
