I just curl all my hair in random sized sections and then once I'm finished I just run my fingers through it to kind of mess it up a little and not have the curls be so defined and perfect looking. Sometimes I'll spray in some dry shampoo or texturizing spray if I have any on hand.

For this picture I just parted my hair in the opposite direction that I normally part it in (as in, I usually part my hair to the left and for this picture/look I parted it to the right). Parting your hair in the direction that its not used to being parted in seems to give you a good bit of volume. Obviously using a rattail comb to tease it helps to give more long lasting volume (I didn't tease my hair this day and my hair did fall a bit flat as the day went on but oh well).

Something else that I find useful is blow drying your hair with a round brush after you wash it. I've found this helps to reduce frizz and make your curls more robust looking.

But it'll pay for itself if you're going to the salon even 1-2 times a year. It's great quality for the price and in this case would be worth it for you. And far from $100-200! I have thick, frizzy, curly hair and in less than 30 minutes this gets my hair stick straight. Therefore saving you time too :) hope this helps!

/u/CaptainBadKid said it pretty well. Harbor freight has arbor presses for pretty cheap. There's a ton of good info on /r/rosin, as well. Here's a $120 build that's pretty good and I'm sure you could cut some corners if you had to. I've heard of people not even using custom plates and just using the plates from the hair straightener though that will break eventually.

Here's the straightener I use which apparently doesn't have wires behind the plate which is good, though you might want to get one with a digital readout. You can also use vise grips if you really want to cheap out and you're only doing small personal runs. Like so.

I have this curl wand. This is the only wand I've found that makes my hair hold the curl. I don't even have to use hair spray! And the curls last until the next day. I actually have the waving wand too and love that as well.

Wearing an obscene amount of makeup will not help anyone, but I think that carefully applying the correct amount of makeup would do wonders!
With that being said:

• Let your eyebrows thicken out or grow them out if you can.
  
  
• It sounds like you have oily skin... same here. Ever tried Acne Free's sulfur mask? It works wonders on breakouts and really absorbs the oil. Pair that with a good foundation (even something from the drugstore like Revlon's Colorstay foundation for oily skin types) and oil-absorbing powder. When you get shiny during the day, use oil blotting sheets instead of caking more powder on.
  
  
• If your hair is thin and you can't find many styles/ways to cut it, have you considered buying a three barrel waver? Revlon makes a good one that is sold at Ulta, and it is so easy to use and adds volume to hair. I bet yours would look really good with the beach waves it makes!

I am also in the market. I was just looking at straighteners on Amazon and the CHI doesn't have the best reviews. I found one I'm going to try- it's the HSI straightener and it has rave reviews (over 11k and almost 5 stars) Amazon is selling the older model of it for $40 (marked down from $200) so I thought it would be worth a try and easy enough to return on Amazon if it doesn't work. I currently have a pro solia that does not straighten my waves. I'm like you- super course thick wavy hair.

EDIT- from what my hair stylist tells me, the CHI was good if you bought it a few years ago, but as they've gained popularity and mass produced, their products don't work as well.

This one. It came with a "heat-protective" glove which is just a thin glove you put on the hand you're wrapping your hair around the barrel with. I have already lost the one that came with the wand and just use a normal cotton glove, which works better because it's a lot thicker.

Got 2b Glued ....but please keep in mind this is some seriously powerful stuff..at least in my opinion. Don't over-do it, or your hair will just wind up gross and hard. But used correctly, this is the ONLY hairspray that will hold my curls. (and my curls never want to stay together)

Also, invest in a curling wand like this. I just got one of these a few months ago, and I adore it. It gives me way nicer looking curls than an old school iron.

I would recommend using a curling wand instead of a curling iron. I wear my hair the same way and with extensions as well (yes, she definitely has extensions).

Remington wet2straight on low setting. If you use a heat gun, it should show around 200-250. I use this one and it works well. Costs about twenty bucks.

If you want to go the extra mile, and honestly get 5-10% more yield, get a 600lb irwin clamp for another twenty bucks.

From what you're describing, it sounds like my best friend has very similar hair and she swears by the CHI straightener. I've used it before too and it's worked a lot better than many other straighteners that I've used in the past. It's in your price range, too :) Hope this helps.

I use the Jilbere Palladium Ceramic flatiron I'm mixed, my hair is buttlength and curly and coarse. I got it from Sally Beauty Supply but i'm not sure they still sell them.

I love it because it gets up to 465 degrees and the little comb on the side (which you can put on either side of the flatiron, or remove completely) keeps my hair from snagging and helps smooth my ends.I bought one years ago and it broke after i dropped it on the stone floor at my parents' house, but i had the extended warranty and they sent me a new one which i've had for probably 8 years now.

The other flatiron i have (which i bought in a pinch when the jilbere was awaiting replacement) is actually a much more budget-friendly option. Its the Remington Wet2Straight which i picked up at walmart I'm sure for like $30 or less. It doesn't get as hot as the Jilbere, nor does it have the comb, but my hair just feels really polished when I use it, and I don't have to blowdry my hair as completely dry (which takes FOREVER for me) because this has little vents for the steam.

Now, keep in mind that that this is not a Paul Mitchell or Chi so it's not going to be perfect, but I owned one before I bought my Paul Mitchell and it did a pretty great job for the price. My hair is very coarse, frizzy, and poofy. It would hold it's straightness throughout the day with a little hairspray and some heat protectant spray.

I have 3b super curly hair and I usually only have to brush my hair dry and run it through once to get it as straight as it will go. And as everyone said heat protectant! But I have never seen people mention the heat setting, I use the HSI one at 350° or lower and it only takes one glide through and I have had no damage at all to my curls.

If you really want something that says "I love you" I'd try to think about something that is related to your relationship. It could be anything, as long as any detail of that object is somewhat connected to you guys.

Another option is giving "experiences" as presents. Like a voucher that is valid for a short trip, a romantic dinner in a nice place, tickets to a concert, etc. I wanted to give my boyfriend a horse-riding experience since he once told me he has never ridden before (I ended up not getting it for other reasons, but I will do so in the future) :)

You can also create your own experience. You can have her on a date in a nearby observatory and watch the stars, or simply take the car, drive to the middle of nowhere and camp there for a while while listening to music, eating snacks, having some wine and watching the stars.

I hope this was helpful. These are all the ideas I can think of at the moment.

So you could do either blow dry straightening, which is my favorite since it looks more natural and gives the hair more movement and body, or regular flat ironing. Blow drying it straight takes a bit of practice to get the technique down right, but it's a nice thing to learn if you have the time and patience. Everyone is different, but I think it usually looks much nicer blown out than flat ironed.

I've never heard of that brand before, and I think for $40 you can get the HSI which I've heard really good things about. A quick look on Amazon's page for the one you linked shows really varied reviews for it. Personally, I'd be wary of it, but I'm the kind of person that likes to go with stuff that's got a good following/significant feedback.

Never flat iron wet or damp hair! You'll burn it. Wait until it's completely dry before ironing. You need to always use a heat protectant of some kind. The have spray kinds that are much lighter weight than creams or lotions, and my favorites are Nexxus' and Suave's spray protectors. They smell nice and don't leave any residue on my hair. Your hair looks like it's at that weird in-between length where it's going to flip out because of it laying against your shoulders. You might want to get some kind of setting spray to try and keep it from flipping out again after you style it. You mention frizz as well, so I'd pick up a leave in conditioner to help smooth that down and keep it at bay. I love Suave's Keratin Infusion leave in. It's super cheap, smells great, and works way better than it has any right too. I haven't had a single flyaway since I started using it.

Since your hair is on the thinner side, you should be using one of the lowest settings. Even my curly, thickish hair only takes about 250-290 degrees to flat iron it pin straight. At the very least, never go over 320, which is usually about the middle setting. After that point it's pretty much overkill on anyone without really coarse hair.

And lastly, any type of heat is going to damage it. The protectant, lower heat setting, and generally just taking care and not straightening it every day is going to prevent it from getting too bad. Regular trims will help keep it looking nice, and you should be deep conditioning and using moisturizing shampoos to stave off dryness from the heat tools.

Seriously, go 10 dollars over budget and get an HSI Flat Iron. I bought one recently, and my God it is amazing. By far the best flat iron I've ever used, and it's so freaking cheap.

Read some reviews if you don't believe me. But this will be your best hair decision yet. Promise.

I use curlers. I do hot curlers, I have a waver iron type thing, I have one with beads down the barrel and I have a set of flexible straw type things I can leave in over night. My flat iron is too big to curl with so I have a bunch of different things I can use to curl my hair. I will link my favorite one below. It can wave your hair or curl it depending on how you use it.

OK. I think our hair types are similar. I now have long hair, but I've been growing it out from a pixie cut for a little under two years, so I've recently experienced the frustration of not knowing how to style mid-length hair. After a lot of research, here's what I've found works well for me at most lengths:

• Clarifying shampoo. My hair gets stringy throughout the day, and if you start out with buildup from products and pollution, that's only going to exacerbate the problem. Using a clarifying shampoo basically gives you a clean slate every day. I use this Neutrogena stuff, but any old brand will do.
  
• Paul Mitchell 'The Conditioner' Leave-In Treatment. This is the only conditioner I use, and I use it no more than twice a week. It's a high-protein leave-in treatment and it makes my hair feel strong and smooth, but my stylist warned that using it too often can dry out your strands.
  
• Joico JoiLotion (formerly Joico I.C.E.) Sculpting Lotion. If I'm planning to style my hair, I'll use a little of this with The Conditioner. It gives a really nice shiny depth to my strands and it adds a little extra support to styles.
  
  When I use all this stuff in a blow-dry routine (I use a newer Conair hairdryer with a cool shot button and a 2" stiff-bristle round brush), my hair looks awesome all day, and taking those steps also prep your hair for more complex 'dos. (Really, though, you're passing a lot of dirt and grease into your locks with your hands, so you should try to break the habit of playing with your hair all the time.)
  
  As far as styles go, I found the tutorials at Hair Romance inspiring. Her e-book, "30 Hairstyles in 30 Days", is $10 and has great step-by-steps and instructions for many useful techniques that I've used to create original styles. FYI, her hair is on the thicker side and has a lot of texture, so you might want to do as I did and acquire and learn to use the following:
  
  
• Teasing comb and styling brushes. As long as your hair is healthy, this is the best way to add lasting volume to your hair at the root and create the illusion of having more and longer hair in ponytails and updos. If you can master teasing, you can get away with many styles that otherwise would only work with longer hair. (It's also a must for over-the-top 'dos for Hallowe'en!)
  
• Texturizing products like OSiS Dust It! Mattifying Powder and ABL Pre Game sea salt spray. They'll help your hair grab onto itself and add extra hold without weighing down fine hair.
  
• Small barrel clipless curling wand. I just picked up this Remington on the cheap at Target; I don't expect it to last forever, but it gets up to high heat (400+) and the texture lasts about three days without washing (respectively, curly; very wavy; somewhat wavy).
  
  There are lots of great hair tutorials around the internet, too. Google around, or search "DIY hair" and "hair tutorial" on Pinterest. Go nuts!

And thats it. At first i used jb weld to hold my plates to each other but found that metal wire (with slots cut into everything to make the wire stay in place and the plates to meet flush) was far easier. Only tool i really used was a dremel and of course my laser thermometer to constantly check accuracy of the temps. I get great results with this setup and it was super cheap. I can post pics of mine if you want. Got it zip tied to the inside of a milk crate to make it portable and stand upright on its own. It looks pretty rough but works great.

Edit. ... personal opinion here ..... but beware of builds using arbor presses, yeah they work, but for my money its easier to twist that 5 inch vise tight really hard then wait and watch the timer...... vs having to stand there with all my weight leaning on an arbor press handle for 60 seconds at a time to keep pressure on. That yost 5 inch vise gives me better returns than i got from an arbor press and it's less work.

I let my hair mostly air dry after I shower until it's just a tad damp, then I blow dry the rest until its dry, no brush used though. (I just like the texture of my hair better when I do it like this, and it holds curls and crimping better too, I've noticed!) Then I use a three barrel waver (mine is this guy, but I'm sure any others would do just fine) in small/ medium sections, top layers first, and then I do my bangs last! My hair is also pretty fine, so if you're going for the same look it might be the same! :) Oh, and of course, hair spray, hahaha. Welcome to long term food prepping!

I embarked on the long term food storage (dry goods) not too long ago and have recently completed the trial & error phase. I am now laying waste to my monthly food budget and have begun to really get my food storages moving forward.

Right now I am concentrating on the following:

• Pasta (Elbows, Penne, Egg Noodles, etc.)
  
• White Rice (Long Grain Enriched & Jasmine)
  
• Beans (Pinto, Black, Black Eye Peas, etc.)
  
• Rolled Oats
  
  All of the above I am purchasing in bulk and on sale where possible and packaging them myself.
  
  I am purchasing the rices & pinto beans at Sam's Club (Best prices I found near me) and the rest I am purchasing either when on sale or at the local discount food grocery store. I have found the elbow pasta at Sam's club is pretty cheap, while most of the other pastas are more expensive than other stores.
  
  So far pasta, rices & pinto beans make up the majority of my dry long term storage and will likely remain this way unless I find an awesome sale on other items in the future.

  When comes to packaging, I am going a slightly different route than others have recommended in the past. Many articles and forum posts advocate using 5 gallon mylar bag + 5 gallon bucket + bucket lid and storing one food item per bucket.
  
  The above is certainly simple and may even be cheaper, but I have a hard time envisioning a scenario where I would want to crack open a 5 gallon bucket of Pinto beans or rice...5 gallons is a lot of food, especially on small dense items like rice and beans.
  
  There is also the issue of seal failure or puncture, when storing 5 gallons at a time you could loose a lot of food due to a single failure.
  
  I have chosen the route of a lot of smaller bags as opposed to fewer larger.
  
  I am using 1 gallon Mylar bags (7.5 mil thickness), 500-600CC Oxygen Absorbers (per bag), 2-3lb of food (per bag) and sealing the bag with a hair straightener.

  When I first started I used cheaper, thinner Mylar bags and honestly it was nothing more than a complete waste of time. I had issues with bags holding seal, punctures by the food items, light could easily passthrough and overall they just sucked.
  
  Once I moved to the 7.5 mil thickness Mylar bags I have had nearly no issues beyond failures due to me not taking enough time sealing the bags with the hair straightener...I can't stress enough, take your time sealing otherwise you will get to the joy of doing it all over again.
  
  I usually seal twice the width of the hair straightener and ensure I squeeze the vast majority of the air out of each bag before you completely seal it. I have begun using two ~2" wide boards with 2 rubber bands around each end sandwiching the Mylar bag "mouth" between the two. It allows me to easily squeeze the air out and helps keep the opening in place while I seal with the iron - I can take a picture if that doesn't make sense.

  In the future I may be ordering from Augason Farms (https://www.augasonfarms.com/) via Walmart.com/Samsclub.com for items I haven't been able to easily source locally (Wheat, Tomato Powder, etc.), however I will try to source things locally where possible assuming it doesn't exceed their prices...but in general Augason isn't the cheapest place, but when they are on sale on Walmart.com they can be a decent deal.
  
  ANY food you purchase prepackaged, please double-check it before you slap it on the shelf. There are plenty of posts here about many companies selling prepackaged food with bad seals, punctured bags, etc.

I use this crazy looking curler since I’m terrible using wands or single barrel curlers and then I brush the out for a bit to make them look a bit loose and unintentional and then I spray it down with a medium gold spray! I have long, thick, curly hair and went through a period of about 2 years where I straightened my hair everyday if I wasn't wearing it up. I had a cheap, crappy flatiron from Sally Beauty. My hair was fried. I saved up and bought a ceramic one (not a Chi, but it was still over $100) and it made a HUGE difference in the time it took to straighten my hair, the texture and the overall appearance of my hair.

I gave that flat iron to a friend 2 or 3 years ago (I bought it in 2004) and it is still going strong. I thing it was Ion brand? If I were to buy one now, I would get one of these. They get consistently good reviews, they are in mid-price range and since I don't really wear my hair straight anymore, it seems like a decent investment.

That said, how do you blow your hair out? I only get blow outs when I get a haircut- I need a third hand to get my hair straight w/ a blowdryer!

The Andis ceramic is the one I have. It's incredible. I've owned plenty of really cheap straighteners, and then I bought one of these on a recommendation. I still consider it a cheap one, but it works wonderfully! At least as good as many of the much more expensive ones. Also, I've had it for about 6 years, dropped it tons, gotten it wet, and in general been not a very good owner and it still works and looks like the day I got it.

I have this flat iron and I love it. I either curl my hair with a flat iron or use a larger barrel curling wand for "beachy" looking waves. The size of the barrel/flat iron depend on what you want the curls to look like. here's what I mean.


Definitely youtube will help. Also, just practice a few times when you're not in a hurry/getting ready in the morning. It's not as intimidating as it seems!

I have fine straight hair and have finally found some things that work for me:

• No heat methods: foam curlers or mini buns all over the head overnight
  
• Curling: Use a heat setting spray like Redken Hot Sets before curling. They'll be crunchy, but the curls will stay. Alternatively, I've found that recently using volumizing shampoo and conditioner (lighter, fuller hair) with NO pre-curl product helps the curls stay as well. For longer hair, I really like the Topstyler clamshells or similar products that let the hair cool down first, creating glossy, bouncy curls that stay.
  
• Waving: I just got the Bed Head Deep Waver, and it is my favorite thing. I think because you work your way down the hair while holding the previous wave in place, the waves have a chance to set before dropping. And it takes 5 minutes!

For waves, get a curling wand (a curling iron will give you more round curls), around 1”.

I have a little butane powered straightening iron and while it in no way is as good as an electric one it does the job (albeit slowly). The butane lasts forever too because I only use it at festivals.

Most recently I got this one, which is super affordable and should work on any length/texture of hair. Curls have lasted 3 days on me so far (my hair is belt length and generally holds a curl for 2 days, ymmv)

I have this only, with a red handle, that I use as my basic curling iron. Cheap, you say? Yes. But it works very well, and it gets the job done.

This guy is my hair dryer. I rarely use it, but when I do, it does very well. The hot setting is pretty hot, though. I tend to stick to low.

My mother bought me this straightener a couple years ago, but I rarely use it, preferring this one that I've had for YEARS. Well that's the newest version of the same one. I like the grip on my old one better.

DO NOT FORGET TO USE THIS. It is a life-saver. Hair-saver. Whatever.

BONUS TIME:

I've found that curling or straightening my hair the night before is the best, and then putting my hair in one of these keeps it well-behaved and styled for the next day.

For beachy waves, I'd curl for about 3-4 seconds, then pull your hair straight for a sec after you take it out of the curler. That always helps me to make waves vs pageant curls.

I'm in need of a replacement as well. I'm currently between deciding on this one, which is listed on Amazon for $44 when the list price is $300 (and great reviews!), and this one, listed on Amazon for $39 when the list price is $49 (also great reviews!). I live in Florida so the second one's humidity resistance feature is the biggest draw for me, but a straightener that's worth $300 for $45 is very hard to pass up. I used a curling wand and then just sort of brushed through the curls with my fingers. Since I have smaller curls, I blew my hair dry so it wasn't curled up, just sort of a frizzy mess before I curled it.

For these pictures I mostly used this.

But if you only want one size, I like this. Lots of temperatures so you can switch between waves and tighter curls.

Aww this makes me want to hug you (I don't mean that in a condescending way, I just feel for you). Have you tried a curling WAND? It's super easy, you just wrap your hair around it. No clamp or pulling or anything. Plus it comes with a glove so your hand is protected from the heat (just don't get the glove wet or the heat goes right through it).

Just wrap about an inch or so of hair around the wand for like 10-15 seconds. I use this one and it works really really well. I suck at using curling irons and flat irons to curl my hair but I find this wand really really awesome. I use the highest heat. My best friend gave it to me as a birthday gift in like 2012 haha but I still use it every time I want to curl my hair. It's the best.

Also, when you let the curl go from the wand, just let it sit, don't brush it through right away. Let all the curls sit (even if you look like curly sue) for 10 mins or so until they are not hot any more, THEN use your fingers to gently run through them and break them up a little bit. Then hairspray!

If the curl still won't stay, try putting hairspray on EACH curl after you let it down from the wand.

Also try curling your hair 12-24 hours after you've washed it instead of right away.
