You need spin pins! These hold better than any rubber band/bobby pin combo and when you take your bun out at the end of the day, you have lovely curls.

Get professional-style bobby pins! They truly do make a difference; they're stronger and hold better. You can get them (like literally anything else) on Amazon!

u/fennelouski · 15 pointsr/photography

Did she do her hair that day? Did you show her some of your pictures in a similar style ahead of time? Did you deliver on matching the style that they (probably) saw ahead of time? If you followed through on capturing the moment and processing the images in a way that's consistent with your normal work flow, then I'd say you're in the clear.

If she really wants a reshoot, offer another session at your normal rate. If she doesn't like that idea, you could offer a discount on another session as compensation since she's not happy with how she did her hair that day.

How did you bill her? If you gave her an invoice, make sure to write the full price and then deduct a discount (Friends & Family usually works well). This way, they know they're getting a discount. That doesn't quite apply here, but it's good advice for any future work of this nature.

Also, I'd recommend keeping hairspray, bobby pins, hair clips, and hair ties. It'll cost you about $20 up front for all of those things but you'll be able to save yourself hours and hours later in editing hair and your clients will be so much happier with you during the shoot. Also, I'd recommend keeping a mirror in your kit as well.

I pull my hair into a ponytail shape (no elastic) and sort of clump it around the base in a spiral. Then I stab some hair pins through it, and replace as needed.

I tend to stay away from the typical vintage styles worn by many in the scene(eg victory rolls), because they don't work on my hair without a lot of damaging back combing and hair spray.

You don't say what length / type of hair you have, but it's important to get hair pins that work for you. Bobby pins are useless if you want a hairstyle to last all night. Try some of these:

Generally braids tend to be more secure and I like buns so everything is pinned up and out of the way of me and my partner. Here are a few styles you might like to try.

No problem! So girls who had pixie-type cuts were generally fine. They didn't really get in trouble. It was really the girls with hair between shoulder length and a pixie. They would get in trouble because hair would fall out of place and touch their face/eyebrows, or even because it had gotten too long (and they either had to cut it, or they had to try to get it up in a ponytail somehow). In our squadron, the girls with shorter hair had to gel it back, then use bobby pins or clips to keep the hair out of their face. A lot of them would struggle with it staying in place when it was windy, rainy, during PT, while marching, or whatever various activity. Some of them also had issues with their hats staying on their heads when it was windy. I was in band flight, so we played at a number of graduations before our own. We had to wear blues, and the flight cap for it doesn't stay on very well, especially when windy. Girls with hair in buns could just bobby pin those caps to their heads. Most of the girls with short hair had to go searching for theirs afterwards. Obviously not a daily situation, but it happens!

Again, there are pros and cons to both long and short hair. I will say, I have similar hair. Mine is suuuuper thick, and at the time it was fairly long. It's also wavy, which makes it even less cooperative. I usually get charged double at hair salons (or at least more than a single cut) because it takes so long! So I totally understand. But I am so glad I left mine long. I learned how to do my hair (and quickly), and I didn't have to worry about growing it out in tech school. I was able to wash my hair pretty well at night. During the first weeks of basic, I put my hair up at night, which didn't let it dry out. During the last weeks, I let it dry overnight and put my hair up in the morning, which helped a lot. Again, it's ultimately your choice, and you'll survive no matter which choice you pick :)

As for the bun thing, nobody showed me either. There are a ton of youtube videos that you can watch though! Here is a good one, and there are plenty more on there! I do the same thing she does. Basically, put your hair in a ponytail. Slide your hair through the donut, and push it against your hair. Bend forward and brush your hair over the donut so it covers it completely, then secure with a hair tie. After that, you can section off the loose hair and braid it, or you can do what the girl in the video does and twist it around. Either one works :)

One thing that made a HUGE difference with my hair - hair pins! These funky looking things. They can be stuck directly into those mesh buns, so they keep that hair at the base of the bun secure.

I'm not sure when you go to basic, but if you have time, I'd encourage you to try a sock bun before you decide if you want to cut it or not. Conair makes those mesh buns (called hair bun makers on the box), and they're sold at Walmart/Target/Walgreens/anywhere, or you can get generic ones at Sally Beauty. Hair pins are also sold at most stores with a hair aisle. It won't be perfect the first time, and that's fine. It's just to give you a general idea of what it's like and if it works for you.

Another thing, there will always be someone to help you! So I didn't even do my hair for the first week or two. The girl next to me did my hair every night, which was super awesome! My hair is difficult, and I had issues getting it to stay up, so I asked for help. That's the thing about basic - you have 50-ish other people in your flight who can help you! If you're bad at something, you can find someone to help you. Hair, rolling shirts, folding towels, whatever. Just ask, or look around to see who has what on point and talk to them. You'll all be in it together, and you'll all be able to help each other.

So yeah. Again, pros and cons to both, and it's your decision. But if you love your long hair, why cut it? Most of the girls in my flight had long hair. You can figure it out. I highly recommend you watch a few videos and try a sock bun a few times. If you happen to be in GA/SC, I could totally help you :p If you try and decide that's not something you want to do every day, then yeah, cut it off! Whichever choice you make, you'll learn to manage it, and you'll survive. I promise :)

Have you considered using hair toys other than elastics? I can get a great fast, secure bun with a hair fork. There are lots of other kinds of clips, sticks, etc., and most of them work best for longer and thicker hair, which it sounds like you have.

u/nonameslob0605 · 8 pointsr/weddingswap

Look on Amazon! I'd sell you mine, but it would probably be cheaper for you to buy new than for me to ship.

Here's what I used - fake pearls and crystals for like $8. They were awesome because they are three different pieces and super bendable, so my hairstylist was able to do pretty much anything with them.

u/l3londie533 · 7 pointsr/xxfitness

I have pretty thin straight long hair. I wear a bun and a headband for every work out!

I use these spin pins to make the bun so that I don't get a crease in my hair and supposedly help prevent breakage from wearing tight ponytails everyday.

And this headband is my favorite. It's the only lululemon thing I own because it's the only lululemon thing I can afford but it is great. It never slips, I never get headaches and I wash it once in a while with my regular laundry.

u/moosecatoe · 7 pointsr/TeenMomOGandTeenMom2

Youre totally right. But most people with long hair take a minute to redo it when it looks like a half exploded firework. Or at least grab another hairtie or clip to pin that mess down and out the way.

Side note: I got these spiral bobby pins that I twirl into my top bun and it keeps that sucker smooth and in place for an 8 hour shift, working out and running, and even swimming. I wish I knew about these when I was still practicing ballet and cheerleading.

u/One_of_a_Kind · 7 pointsr/curlyhair

Two tips for curly hair and updo's: try out spin pins, they're bun pins for curly hair. I find them super comfortable. My hair is about belly button length.

Another idea for keeping it in place is to literally sew it. A super blunt needle (I use big plastic ones) and some yarn. There's someone on the /r/weddingplanning sub just today who's hair was done like this.

If your hair is braid-able, you can braid a circlet on the top of your head to keep things looking pretty and under control. Like this

Edit: I forgot to add my favourite updo/bun method: use chopsticks!

u/ncbinlmnihgov · 6 pointsr/femalehairadvice

It's okay. It's really nice to see a dude with long hair who doesn't leave it dirty and greasy, lol! Not a dig at you. I'm just so tired of seeing dudes like, grow out hair and then not fucking wash it. Why?

The sideburns are a little messy, but that's covered in other comments. The nape of your neck has a lot of baby hairs, but they're all in a really uniform length... Do you cut them that way? It could be breakage from the hair band, so you might want to switch to a hair stick or a comb like this or this to prevent that if your hair tends to break. If you cut it that way... stop it.

The frizz and flyaways could be from static or dryness. There's some non static combs. You can go high grade or low grade. For dryness, you can try a leave in conditioner, but I don't know what dudes put in their hair, so I don't have any real recommendations.

u/twospoonsforme · 6 pointsr/xxfitness

Loved my bob cut and was thinking of cutting my hair again. I used to braid my hair down two sides to catch all the hair. Those little elastic rubber bands for hair are amazing but will end up everywhere. Also, these are amazing if you want to do two little buns. They stay put much better than bobby pins.

u/pepperjackplease · 5 pointsr/AskWomen

To all my bun buds: spin pins changed my life.

u/saiph · 5 pointsr/Aerials

My go-to is a quick bun held in place with two smallish octopus clips. It holds quite well if I just twist, spiral, and clip (no hair elastic necessary), and it takes like five seconds to do. I have to redo it if I do something bouncy like a mat run, but it stays for basically everything else.

Some of my friends have slipperier hair than me, and they find that two spin pins work better for them than two octopus clips.

If I want something more secure, I'll go full-on classical ballet bun. I'll get my hair damp with a spray bottle, ponytail, and pin the shit out of it. I find that two-stranded buns hold the best and look the nicest (personal preference, though). I'm sure it's not good for my hair, but it's practically indestructible. You can jazz it up by doing a braided bun, a twist-and-braid combo, twists or french braids into the bun, and a bunch of other things.

Ugh, this is making me miss my long hair. I just cut a foot off.

u/sunshineandsarcasm · 5 pointsr/starbucks

I have long, thick, wavy hair that like to escape, and has a tendency to give me headaches when worn up in a bun for too long.

these are LIFESAVERS. I bought two packs and use two pins for my buns, and occasionally a bobby pin or two for any stray hairs.

u/lartar · 4 pointsr/muacjdiscussion

I'd get some of those twisty bobby pin thingies. I have a bob right now, but if I have some curl in my hair, I can just kind of roll and twist my hair at the nape of my neck and insert two of those bad boys. Secure any strands that fall out with extra (regular) bobby pins. Cute and effortless looking with minimal effort (especially if your hair naturally has some curl to it). If you don't have any curl in your hair, I'd definitely add some product and maybe run a curling iron through your hair first.

I also like to gather strands on both sides of the front of my hairline and either twist or braid them back on super lazy days.

u/dragonfox · 4 pointsr/curlyhair

I hate to say it, but when I had long hair, it was scrunchies all the way. Now, another thing you can do, if you don't mind buns, is spin pins.. They are really gentle on curly hair and have a great hold to them. They do take some practice, IMO, to set them right. You might not have to have it in a bun either, that's just how I always wore my hair.

Sorry about the rule, sounds like a school with nothing better to worry about.

u/sewsewsewyourboat · 4 pointsr/SkincareAddiction

I use these pins to wrap my hair into a bun. No elastic band, is actually very secure (I use these to run, too beverage my hair week often fall out of elastic bands), and doesn't cause breakage because it's not really putting any force on your hair. You can also adjust how "loose" it is to your head so it doesn't give you a headache.

u/stinksmcgee3 · 4 pointsr/weddingplanning

I did not grow up with a lot of money either - so I felt tremendous guilt over a wedding dress. I went shopping at BHLDN, where the gowns are very reasonable. I also talked myself into a $450 dress, because the price was something I could swallow for one day - and even that makes me uncomfortable. Ended up going with a $1450 dress, which is hard for me (THATS MORE THAN A MONTHS RENT!!!!! FOR ONLY A FEW HOURS!!!!) but I felt so beautiful in it.

Alterations cost me $260. Bought my veil and hairpiece onamazon to try to off set the costs a bit. It's a lot, but it's something I look and feel beautiful in. I also bought my dress 16 months before my wedding, with the same thought as you - lots of time to "recoup" the costs.

u/amandatoryy · 3 pointsr/TheGirlSurvivalGuide

my mom has thin hair and uses the three piece ones. they are a bit smaller and the third one helps secure the bun better!

like this :)

u/slowly_goroda · 3 pointsr/running

Corkscrew pins are remarkably secure, don't pull on your hair, and keep my bun loose looking while it keeps its shape and doesn't get undone. I buy the ones by Goody just because that's what was available in the store. You might want to have 4-6 of those pins. Make sure you don't get the "mini" ones.

Depending how long and thick your hair is... Mine is to the middle of my back but not super thick. I used to think those pins were a gimmick, but I had to secure my daughter's bun for ballet and this is what was recommended. I love them!

I have really long, thick hair and do a braided bun. It sounds complicated but is easy (if you know how to braid) once you get used to it. In high school I did it every day during my alst class to get ready for softball practice, and it stayed without issue for practice, games, etc., even with putting on and taking off my helmet.

  1. Braid hair into two french braids (like pigtails)

  2. Rubberband the pigtails together in the back of your head, wherever you want your bun to be (low-ish usually works for me, but not so low that it's on my neck)

  3. one at a time, wrap the brainds around the center rubber band to make a bun.

  4. secure with 2 (or 3) more hairties OR use these awesome "swizzle sticks" (I usually do this when I'm wearing this in my regular life as a "hair-do" vs for exercise

(Here'sa time I wore this to a wedding, though in this pic it's one french braid down the back, pony tail at back of head, two regular braids from the loose hair, and the continue steps 3&4 )
u/VidaBoheme · 3 pointsr/FancyFollicles

The best way I've found to secure my hair is by using these spin pins to pin up my bun and then I use an elastic on top of that. My hair does not budge!

u/makeitorleafit · 3 pointsr/curlyhair

Ooh! For a comfy bun- Goody makes these spin pins that have saved my life! I love the shorter ones cause my hair is thin and makes a tiny bun.

u/cheshire06898 · 3 pointsr/femalefashionadvice

I have long (boob length), wavy hair that is thick, but the individual hairs are fine (i just have a lot of them).I find for my hair if I wear it up, I need a quick mist of hair spray or sea salt spray to give my hair some tack so it doesn't just slip out. I have also found that these spin pins are fantastic for really anchoring down a bun to your head. I also like styles like this that look complicated, but really hold all of the hair together and stays in place (I use the spin pins to anchor down this style as well).

u/SlamielTosh · 3 pointsr/femalehairadvice

My hair is similar to yours, and about 7 months ago I got really tiered if my go to dos "down and natural," messy bun," and "sleek sock bun." I also got really tired of every morning trying to figure out what I wanted to do with my hair, so I decided to have a hair "uniform." Every work day my hair is the exact same.

I part to the left (always have), twist the right side (bangs) into kind of of a Dutch twist and bring that back to a low ponytail behind/below my right ear. For the left side I just smooth it back and join it in to the low pony.

From here I'll braid the pony tail and roll it up into a bun and secure with a spin pin

This works for me as a simple, quick, everyday, professional look. I felt like my hair was too long for the look I wanted to present professionally and made me look much younger than I am so an updo was my best option.

I do also love a sleek sock bun

Good luck!

u/catterfly · 3 pointsr/femalefashionadvice

Looks good unless you have fine/thin/shorter hair

u/SaltyBabe · 3 pointsr/MakeupAddiction

I have the worlds finest hair. 5 minutes in a pony tail and its like I've got a permanent line in my hair until I wash it even though it won't hold a curl to save my life.

Use this. It says use two for a bun, my hair is so fine I can use one even though my hair is so long it goes to the small of my back. If you put some product in it and do a spiral bun while its damp it actually looks really sexy when you take it down after its dried. Typically I can go 4-5 hours with out adjusting the pin but if you use two they lock each other in place, I just can't fit them both in my bun.

They're worth 10x their weight in gold, buy some and try it out. It took me a while to figure out just how to get them to work for me but it was beyond worth it. They're my go to hair tie when I need to go out and about. Won't work for sports/working out or sleeping unfortunately.

u/hpsterscum · 2 pointsr/HaircareScience

Sorry I am just seeing this! I use spin pins - you can twist up your hair in a bun and then screw in these pins, which are very secure! I never learned the bun-with-elastic technique. My buns look deformed when I do that.

u/AngelicBabyGirl · 2 pointsr/Random_Acts_Of_Amazon

Short hairs, no cares!

I recently chopped off all of my hair, I had it short before but this time it is short short. At first I didn't like it because I thought I didn't look pretty anymore ( my boyfriend telling me I looked like a cute boy didn't really help). Then right when I was finally getting use to it a friend said I looked like I had cancer.

I love my hair now that I have finally gotten use to it, but I will admit I almost always wear a hair bow or head band.

My favorite headband is this one!

Second favorite is the pink headband

This would be adorable for summer!

I did some googling and found "spin pins" recommended for non-achy buns, so that might be something to try out.

I have straight, slippery hair and wear my hair in a bun a lot. I use those spiral bobby pins (which changed my life) and I'll rub a few drops of jojoba oil in, to tame the flyaways. Sometimes I'll braid it first, sometimes I just twist it.

Jojobal oil in general is the BEST leave in conditioner I've ever used. It does require washing out, so you have to plan it into your routine. It makes my hair so silky. And it's relatively inexpensive!

I have long, super thick hair (and I'm half-black, so I have that whole thing going on, too) and Spin Pins are basically the best thing EVER. One of them will keep my hair up all day. Two of them will keep it from moving even an inch. You should check them out.

There are many things I've learned growing my hair out, but these are the most important:

  1. One of the best things you can do is keep your hair in a bun or a braid as much as possible. The less opportunity it has to tangle, the less likely it is to break, and it helps protect the ends. I keep it up most of the time out of necessity at this point - my hair is hip-length and I'm constantly sitting on it if I leave it down.

  2. A good detangler is important. My stylist recommended this a few years ago and I bought a bottle from the salon for $20. I only use a couple of drops after every wash in my hip-length hair, and I'm still on my first bottle (though it's almost empty - I just bought a new bottle). It keeps my hair super soft and shiny and untangled on the rare occasions I leave it down.

  3. These are my favorite hair accessory. After a little practice, it only takes three of these and five minutes and my hair is in a bulletproof bun and ready for any situation. And that bun will last until I pull the pins out - I've fallen asleep with my hair up and woken up with it still in the exact same style (if a bit frizzy).
u/MacDaddiO · 2 pointsr/MakeupAddiction

I have long hair and wanted the "sock bun" look too- due to my anal-retentive personality of wanting my hair to be perfect & seeing my classmates in college who were ROTC with the most magnificent buns. I found a bun maker set that was exactly what I was looking for. I could never get the socks to work for me, and man did I destroy a ton of socks. Here's a link to what I bought:

> I kind of worry about kinks from pinning it, but it's definitely worth a shot!

Have you tried using a spin pin? I put wet hair in a bun with one of those pins all the time and I don't get kinks, just very gently wavy hair from it being twisted. I can imagine it working well if you put it in a bun on top of your head before bed.

u/funky_fresh_kicks · 2 pointsr/femalehairadvice

SPIN PINS. They are the miracle you've been waiting for. I have mid-length thin hair, but they were recommended to me by a former coworker with the waist length, thick beautiful hair. All you do is swirl your hair into a bun and then 'screw' the twisted bobby pin through the bun. IT took me a couple times to figure out how to get a tight hold, but once you figure that out you are gold! And the best part is that when I put my hair up when its a bit wet, I have the most beautiful wavy curls when I take it down later!

The Goody brand pins are great, but expensive for how many pins you get. I only need one with my shorter, thin hair but my friend definitely used two for a stable bun. I've also bought these off-brand pins which are exactly the same thing for way less. I bought those in a gold metallic color and I haven't noticed any chipping or other aging marks on the metallic paint.

Do yourself a favor and try them out. I promise you they are magic!

I was in the military for a few years, so I feel you! My hair was so damaged from the hair ties. I would say avoid regular hair ties and use scrunchies if you can. You could also try spin pins: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B01N5X7AK7/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_BMeQAb3GE7D4V

I have used two to put my hair in a bun, and it holds even better than hair ties for me.

TBH I wish I would have just chopped my hair off for the military, then I wouldn't have had to worry, lol.

I also used to braid my hair (it was pretty long) and twist the braid into a bun. Then I would get to have waves, even if they weren't my natural waves.

After showering, flip your head upside down and gather up hair on the top of your head like you're doing a ponytail. Start twisting hair around until it gently coils up on itself. Secure with spin pins into a bun smack on top of your head. Remove in morning to fluffy hair goodness.

Hello! We meet again.

These would truly be great!

EDIT: On the MariaJ list

Thanks for hosting!

  1. Hmm so many good bands to choose from, but one of my favorites is Allah-Las. Hope you enjoy!

  2. I have pretty long hair too- one thing that helps to style it quickly is a [bun maker] (http://www.amazon.com/Conair-ACN-310-Bun-Maker-Set/dp/B004ROW0QM). I have a regular sized one and a giant one. They take only a few minutes but look like you spent a lot of time.

  3. Here's a green that I really like.

Because bobby pins are the best! And cheap!

These things. I love them. Of course, right now I can't find any of mine, but…

u/feste_mm · 1 pointr/Hair

I am not a stylist, but I've had long, very thick hair for most of my life. First question - are you washing it every day? Depending on the texture (and I'm guessing yours is on the very thick, medium/coarse side), you can get away with not washing it for up to a week. Not only is this a time saver - it can actually be much healthier for thick hair. I usually wash/condition mine every 6 days, and it looks fine even without any dry shampoo in between.

Second, are you using, or can you spend the money on a removable showerhead, or at least one with adjustable settings? It's a ton easier to rinse out shampoo and conditioner with one of these, plus you can get better water pressure by playing with the settings, which makes everything go much faster.

In terms of styling, invest in extra large bobby pins for buns, like these, smaller alligator clips, and thick hair ties that will keep your hair up all day. If you want an easy, long hairstyle, try putting your hair in two twist buns at night (you'll have to play with the positioning a little so you can still sleep without having them dig into the sides of your head), and take them down in the morning for loose, natural-looking waves. This doesn't always come out perfectly every time, but for a 4-minute time investment, it works pretty well.

If this doesn't work for you, maybe even just cutting a few inches off will help? It wouldn't be very noticable to other people, if your hair is that long to begin with, but sometimes even cutting off a little bit of length can make a world of difference.

Hope this helps!

These sweet Bobby Pins will come in handy! Can be used as a fishing hook, a screwdriver (if I have some random screwing to do on the desert island), as a lock pick when I find the dharma initiative hideout, emergency skin sutures (ack the pain), holding back my hair as I make traps with string, sticks and bobby pins for bunnies etc.

Since turtles are awesome, I'd use bobby pins along with braided palm leaves to fashion a harness for my sea turtles so I could escape.

If you have hair longer than chin length, then these are the pinnacle of man's ingenuity. They also come in short sizes.

Other than that, I've always wanted to buy some of this. Unfortunately it's over $10 with shipping.

u/CrazyCatLady108 · 1 pointr/gifs

i went from so short i could not put into a pony-tail to now touching my butt. about 3 years ago i got serious about hair health, and i think just now i am finally getting the hang of it. regular trimmings and these are the two things i credit with the most progress.

just recently i have tried some temporary haircolor, the type that comes out after 28 washes. it doesn't really come out but it doesn't really damage my hair to where i say i will never do it again. :) so maybe some temporary bright red is still in your future.

u/themysticpurplefox · 1 pointr/curlyhair

I use spiral bobbypins to put my hair in a bun. No creases and you can make the bun as loose or tight as you need. I usually use 4 pins for a nice and secure bun (for top, bottom, and each side)

I have long thick hair as well! First I do a normal ponytail and twirl that that into a bun. Then I use two "telephone cord" hair ties to keep the bun shape. And finally I use two goody "spin pins" to secure the bun! I've used this for several races and long runs and it doesn't bounce or get loose.

Have you heard of spin pins? I put my hair in a high-ish ponytail, braid it, and then twist these pins into the bun. It helps my thick hair stay in place all day! You can do a regular ballet bun with them too. To give you an idea of the hold, I wear these in my hair to go run at the gym!

u/existie · 1 pointr/AskWomen

I don't use bobby pins for this reason. They're terrible, especially for holding any real amount of hair.

If you want to secure a bun, use amish hairpins, or spin pins, or hair sticks, or a ficcare, or something else along those lines. Bobby pins aren't worth the metal they're made from, in my opinion!

Love,

Lady with mid-thigh length hair.

u/boopbaboop · 1 pointr/longhair

Conair Firm Hold Bobby Pins are my go-to - they're longer and much stronger than normal bobby pins and they never slip in my hair (I also have very thick hair that can get slippery). I also use these hair pins for updos - they're better when you're trying to hold thick hair together in something like a bun.

As for styles:

  • My failsafe is a braided bun. One braid from the nape of the neck down, wrapped into a tight spiral and pinned. I can have it hold up with only four Conair pins and maybe six or eight of the hair pins if I can't find the Conairs.
  • If I want to dress it up a little, I do a French braid starting on one side of my head, but only taking hair from the "outside" of the braid (so the right if I start on my right side, or left if it's on the left). If you keep adding hair all the way around your head, you get a crown braid; if you do this only up so that it's parallel with where you started (generally I start right at one ear and end at the other) and then just finish the braid straight, you can wrap that in a spiral and then pin it. Now you've got a cool rose-shaped thing on the back of your head.
  • Cheating! I make my own snoods, but you can buy them online (here's a cheap set). Snoods are basically bags to keep your hair in. They're easier for me than hair scarves (I always feel like I have to do origami to make them work), they can be pinned in place if you're really worried about them not staying up on their own, and they can be coordinated with your outfits.

Maybe some of those tiny little notebooks that fit in your pocket? I use those to write down vitals and such without lugging a clipboard around.

Hair ties since she’ll have to have her hair up, or if she would like them, I really love spin pins because I can have my hair up all day and never get a headache like I do from a pony tail.

Also don’t forget lunchbox stuff could be useful too because hospital cafeteria food is disgusting and generally not very healthy. Like maybe some glass Tupperware , a lunchbox, or a water bottle/cup.

Also if your friend is like me and likes to wear makeup, she will want a lipstick that won’t quit! This stuff stays on through my 12 hour shifts and I just love it!

Really depends on how much you want to spend, but I find that that these are the things that really got me through clinicals.

u/Wtfkassiex3 · 1 pointr/curlyhair

La looks and deva curl doesn’t work for me. I use either SM momongo gel, the eco styler flax seed or SM gel with the pink label. The SM curl enhancing smoothie too.

CG approved styling foam includes creme of nature styling foam, and there’s one by styleID I LOVE bc you can use heat (I diffuse with med heat idc idc)

I use twisty Bobby pins like this and hair clips like this puff cuff like i said, great when I need a pony without the headache.

u/spacepod · 1 pointr/weddingplanning

Braids! There are a ton of really beautiful styles that you can do with braids.

Another secret if you haven't found them yet- spin pins. I used to use at least 6-12 long pins in my hair daily when I put it up and usually throughout the day they would start to wiggle out. Now I use 2-4 spin pins for a similar style and they stay put all day. You can get the knockoffs on amazon for cheap.

u/mewfasa · 1 pointr/Random_Acts_Of_Amazon

It will be mine, oh yes, it will be mine.

So I was doing my hair this morning and I went to grab a bobby pin to pin some of my hair back. I'm looking all over my bathroom counter (I'm terribly unorganized when it comes to my hair supplies) - can't find one. Check my makeup bag (which ends up being my everything bag) - no luck. Finally, I check my purse (you never know when you're out and about and need a bobby pin) - found one! I finish my hair and head out (three minutes later than intended).

I have a serious bobby pins deficit problem. So my request for an add-on item is this lovely six-pack of bobby pins so I will never run out of bobby pins again.

Haha, let's be honest now - I'd probably run out again in a few months. But for the time being, these bobby pins would help tremendously.

EDIT: Cheaper option

u/921ren · 1 pointr/Random_Acts_Of_Amazon

It will be mine, oh yes, it will be mine. because, let's be honest -- these things get up and walk away all the damn time and I can never find one when I need one. A lady always needs more bobby pins. Thanks for the contest :)

u/PauseAndThinkAboutIt · 1 pointr/curlyhair

I've always used U shaped bobby pins. The other kind almost always cause me trouble. They look like this. Rather than pinching the hair into place, it works more like a hair stick and uses gentle leverage to keep locks where they belong. Even before I started CGM, I found they disrupted my curl pattern less and reduce breakage or pulled hairs.

There are also screw pins which are a lot more gentle. They look like this. I haven't tried them yet, but they serve a similar purpose of using gentle leverage and friction to hold hair in place rather than gripping like regular bobby pins do.

Regardless of what you use to get your hair out of your face, there's still the matter of the hair being stretched. To minimize stress on my upper layers, I don't put my hair up the same way twice in a row. One day I'll wear a wide cloth headband. The next, I'll gently gather it into a clip. Another day, I'll wear a handmade wood or bone comb. Mine looks a little like this, but smaller. I also like the ones that are U shaped like the bobby pins. In fact, I like the 2 prong combs better than the pins. I buy a lot of handmade items like that made out of wood, bone, and leather such as the hair stick barrettes. The point is to change it up to keep the same hair from being stretched in the same way every day.

The worst thing I did was putting it up while it was still damp or wet. Even root clipping for extra body during my regular styling routine has given me trouble. I have to take the clips out before my hair dries completely at the roots because my hair shrinks as it dries and starts to pull. If the hair is bound while it is wet, it can dry stretched to it's maximum which can cause permanent damage, especially if done daily. Even if your hair is completely dry, make sure you're not puling it too tight.

So basically, play with your hair and allow yourself to have some variety. And wear it down as often as you can. I'll often throw it in a claw clip to buy groceries, but take it out as soon as I get in the car to go home. My new favorite way to get it out of my face is a wide cloth headband, though. Someone gave me a couple of what they call neck gators last year, and I've come to appreciate them a lot more since I started CG for getting hair out of my face.

u/I_Dont_Own_A_Cat · 1 pointr/AskWomen

You can use spin pins to put it in a bun. My hair is extremely thick. Two pony tail holders or ponytail holder plus spin pins usually does the trick for a bun.

u/soignestrumpet · 1 pointr/running

After the braid step, wrap it into a bun and secure with spin pins instead of multiple elastics. Stays put for me through running, multiple soccer games, and swimming (in the ocean without a cap). For just short runs I can skip the braid step as well. For daily life I even skip the elastic. Just twist, pin, and go.

(You can also get them CVS, Target, etc)

u/RiddleMeThis1213 · 1 pointr/Aerials

I have long dreadlocks (a little past my hips) and I flip my head upside down and twist it tightly into a bun on top of my head securing it all with an elastic. Actually I use a headband due to the thickness, but if you don't have dreads then a regular hair tie would probably work. It usually holds pretty well.

They wouldn't work in my hair, but my aerial instructor usually puts her hair in a low bun using spin pins like these https://www.amazon.com/Goody-Simple-Styles-Assorted-Colors/dp/B003FVDNO6?th=1

$20-30 item, & add on.

Why do I need the big item? Arizona gets make your butt sweat & face melt hot, I need something to cool off with.this item could be used for much more than just making a snow cone. I could use the Ice to smoosh on my face to stay cool,i could make a ton of ice in my freezer then fill my bath tub with "snow" and play in it. I also like eating ice, shaved ice will be better for my teeth then ice chunks. The add on item would be for my daughter & myself but could also be used for sly missions. Lol

If you do buns I highly suggest using either spin pins or bun pins to keep your hair up instead of a hair tie! creaseless hair ties work great to avoid breakage and I hear invisibobbles or "hair coils" work great too. (Somebody else also suggested these)
