Owned these before moving on the the HD 598, AKG K7XX and Philips Fidelio X2.

Can say these are one of the best entry level headphones especially for those looking for some good audio on the PC.

Plus points are :

  • Good bass for movies and games
  • Light weight and super comfortable. Can wear all day without realizing its on your head.
  • Open back headphones so no stuffiness in the ears from humidity building up
  • Low impedance so doesn't require an amplifier to get the best from it

    Cons

  • Sound leakage since Open back
  • You enter into the audiophile world that starts you on the quest for the perfect headphone/sound

    Optional accessory:

Braided Cable replacement: This is an excellent choice if you prefer to have braided cables over the stock ones with a much shorter length.

DO NOT USE THESE, they make it VERY easy to break your 3.5mm jack.

Instead, use something like this that separates the 1/4" section from the smaller jack:

Alternatively, you can get this aftermarket cable:

I use an audio splitter (example) to route music from my phone/laptop to both a speaker and an Arduino circuit. The code I wrote for the Arduino takes in the music, breaks up the signal into its various frequencies, and assigns a color to the dominant one. For example, I made it so that lower frequencies like bass lines appear blue and higher frequencies like vocals appear more red, and in-between ones are more purple colored. It then propagates that color down the LED strip.

I can use any color I want. I just thought this color scheme would look better for parties. And it ended up matching the overall look and feel of Simulation Theory, so I thought I'd share.

Analyzing the frequencies takes a lot of computing time, so the LEDs aren’t propagating as fast as I'd like. To fix this I'm working on a different algorithm that uses a completely different method.

Edit: clarity.

No it wont. You need a 4pin 3.5mm extension cable.

u/jasonnug · 16 pointsr/buildapcsales

Yes, the cord that comes with it is crap imo. I got this cord recently for mine and it's fantastic.

u/Idkidks · 15 pointsr/buildapcsales

In that case, you can buy a OEM replacement cable, or you can get a 3rd party one [like this one] (https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00KAKGQCQ/) that's braided (I can attest to the quality slightly, I've been using it for a month and no wear yet) and a little higher quality.

u/BlamelessVestalsLot · 15 pointsr/buildapcsales

I have these headphones, for gaming and at the price they're a recommend buy from me since everything is clear and the audio positioning is great. The only negative thing that I can say is that the stock cables are terrible and mine died within a few months. I recommend these.

u/Daemon_Ursus · 12 pointsr/buildapcsales

I also really like these, great headphones at a great price. However the stock cords suck pretty hard unless you like grippy rubber cables. I picked up these as a replacement, and fully recommend them for anyone else who doesn't like the stock cable:

Congrats! I love my 598Cs. They're going to be my go to headphones until Massdrop ships my K7XX :)

Now every I see the 598Cs I recommend getting this replacement cable.

It's worth every penny. Enormous upgrade over the stock cable.

u/ggibby · 7 pointsr/headphones

Pretty easy to find upgrade/replacement cables, even with the proprietary plug housing.

u/notdeadyet01 · 6 pointsr/buildapcsales

Just a heads up, you'll want to purchase one of [these] (https://www.amazon.com/Replacement-Audio-upgrade-Sennheiser-Headphones/dp/B00KAKBHKM) to go along with it. The wire that comes with it is 10 feet long and the 3.5mm adapter is huge and clunky.

u/10GuyIsDrunk · 6 pointsr/Vive

Holy shit for real? I was being a dick too man, I apologize. People who've bought into gaming headsets often don't like hearing they aren't the best investment so I guess I'm prone to being salty with them.

If you want my recommendation for VR with the Vive I've been recommending the HD 558s for a number of reasons. They are really decent quality overear open headphones and the material on both the ear cups and the headband should hold on to your head well in use in VR while you're moving all around. These headphones (along with the 598s) have an amazing soundstage for gaming as well. Because they're open you're going to be able to hear the world around you, this might sound immersion breaking but I think you'll find that it's not and it's the trade off with open headphones and having a good soundstage. It also has the added benefit of being able to hear people while in VR though.

Now, coming from gaming headsets the bass might sound a bit lacking or they might not seem to pop as much but that's due to a more realistic and neutral soundstage. I am 99% sure you'll get used to it. As I mentioned about the 598s are also great and maybe even a little better but the headband is made out of a pleather material that tends to slip, so I can't recommend them for VR.

The 558s are about $100 and are easily one of the best pairs of headphone you can buy at that price point. For VR I would recommend picking up this as the included cable is very long (great for couch gaming, not for VR).

For a mic in VR I'd say just use the one in the Vive. For desktop I use either my Blue Snowball or my Blue Yeti.

Reviews on Head-Fi

Camel price history (previously hovering around $89)

Pretty neat set of portable headphones that I was planning to pick up. Note that apparently the cable with the mic and controls kinda ruins sound quality, but thankfully it's also detachable so you can get a solid replacement cable like this one if you really want to.

u/Rhonun · 6 pointsr/NintendoSwitch

I use one of these and route it behind my couch

u/AFTVnews · 6 pointsr/fireTV

No Fire TV models support pairing two Bluetooth headphones simultaneously. Here are your options.

Option 1) If your TV has a 3.5mm audio out headphone jack, you can connect a Y splitter to it and then connect two wired headphones to the splitter. This is the best option for audio quality because you won't have any audio sync issues since everything is wired, but it does mean running wires to your couch.

Option 2) If your TV has a 3.5mm audio out headphone jack but you don't want to run wires across your room, then you can connect a Bluetooth transmitter (in TX mode) to your TV's headphone jack and then pair two Bluetooth headphones to the transmitter. This is the best option in the sense that you both won't have any wires tethering you, but you risk audio sync issues and you both might be out of sync a different amount.

Option 3) Pair a Bluetooth receiver in RX mode with the Fire TV, then connect a Y splitter to the receiver, and then connect two wired headphones to the splitter. You won't have wires running from the TV to the couch, but you'll both be tethered with wires to the little receiver box on the couch. You might have audio sync issues, but you'll both be equally out of sync.

u/DerJawsh · 5 pointsr/headphones

IIRC the HD598 uses a non-standard connector for the plug that goes into the headphones. It's actually not 3.5mm that plugs into the headphone but rather 2.5mm.

The HD 598SE (black version on Amazon) comes with a shorter cable that is 3.5mm without adapter if that interests you.

Otherwise, I believe there are unofficial "replacement cables" for the HD 598 that you can buy (I believe there are some official ones too but you have to scour the Sennheiser parts site) that are 2.5mm/3.5mm

http://www.amazon.com/Replacement-Audio-upgrade-Sennheiser-Headphones/dp/B00KAKBHKM

u/PsykoDemun · 5 pointsr/technology

2.5mm is simply a size for the plug. You can do TRS (or TRRS) on a 2.5mm jack for balanced stereo audio.

As an example Sennheiser uses a 2.5mm end on their headphone cables to plug into the headphones themselves. Here's a replacement cable for Sennheiser headphones that is a 3.5mm male to 2.5mm male.

u/atirad · 5 pointsr/buildapcsales

This cable is a great replacement for the stock, preference for shorter high quality cable for your desk to amp/dac.

Whoa, that's a really fast failure time. Could you tell me what cables you've tried out? I'm actually planning on getting a pair of HD518's when they go on sale with this third party cable.

u/rtm416 · 5 pointsr/headphones

Alternatively, This cable is pretty swanky.

u/SarcasticOptimist · 5 pointsr/headphones

The AKG in my flair. I love it, and got this cable upgrade since my cat likes chewing the rubber part. Open, accurate, and I can hear all the good and faulty parts of whatever I listen to. I honestly don't have a problem with the "light" bass; it's not emphasized. It can handle DnB and dubstep if I need it to.

u/PopWhatMagnitude · 5 pointsr/techsupport

Sounds like you could troubleshoot that front jack or you could just buy an extension cable for $6 so you can run off the back port and call it a day.

You can get a regular mic stand with boom, swap the boom for a ‘boom holder’ and get a lightweight boom on it. I’ll put some links in for what I got.

https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B00NW7MT5C/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_i_d53PDbMFQ3ZFN

The boom is hollow and has spaces to accommodate a wire running through it. It’s very light, so shouldn’t be a problem for the mic stand, especially if you weigh down the base.

u/Alphr · 5 pointsr/NintendoSwitch

I use this method, works great for using Discord and playing Splatoon etc.

Remember to also get a ground loop isolator like this (https://www.prohavit.com/products/hv-x2-ground-loop-isolator/) they are on amazon for like $10 or it will be a bit "static...y"
This works docked or un-docked, he was just describing that you can use the dock for the video, and using the headphone port still works.

I have also used a Headphone splitter like this (https://www.amazon.com/Headphone-Splitter-Syncwire-Nylon-Braided-Smartphones/dp/B07431YDWM) along with the Male-Male 3.5mm cable to essentially create a "two input - one output" adapter so that I can plug both my phone and Switch into my headphones at once while not at my PC (so I can listen to podcasts while playing). The audio levels can be a little weird with no proper mixing, but it works.

u/forthelol · 5 pointsr/headphones

T2's use MMCX. From experience, Yinyoo is pretty consistent and are available at a decent price. These will run you 20 bucks. They have silver ones for almost double the price as well. If you're in no rush, you can get them for about 10 bucks or less off of Aliexpress.

u/Route66_LANparty · 4 pointsr/buildapcsales

I bought these a few years back. Turned me into a huge Sennheiser fan boy. The comfort and durability alone are notable. Add-in that the sound quality brings you into the realm of audiophile-grade and you have a huge reason to buy whenever they go on sale.

I have the 558 in my laptop bag for gaming on the go, a pair of HD518 for use with the Vive, and the Massdrop HD6xx on my main PC setup.

I've been wanting to grab another set for work, was hoping to grab the 598 and "complete the set." But this is tempting.

u/rjwwrx · 4 pointsr/headphones

I'm really enjoying the new Metallica album. The mastering/production is quite good. Death Magnetic borders on unlistenable with my 598's so I appreciate that they didn't make that atrocious mistake again.

Happy to be able to enjoy another Metallica album. Now if I can just stop wanting another pair of headphones...

I use this. It works for both my Sennheisers and M50x. Although, you'll probably have the same issue as it's only very slightly smaller.

I would recommend an adapter like this. Just leave it on the end of your cable all the time and you won't notice it.

TRRS -----> Tip (Left Channel), Ring (Right Channel), Ring (Common/Ground), Sleeve (Microphone +)

Yes, you can buy an extension, but unless your computer input panel is 4-pin capable then you will still have the same problem

Heres an extention: http://www.amazon.com/StarTech-com-MUHSMF2M-Position-Headset-Extension/dp/B008DWGLLO/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1406307141&sr=8-2&keywords=StarTech.com+3.5mm+4+Position+TRRS

and here's what I think you need. This will split the signal into two outputs: one for headphones, one for audio. just plug one into the headphone jack on the computer and one into the microphone jack. You may need to switch them around the first time you try them because this one isn't labeled.

u/MinecraftAddiction · 3 pointsr/xboxone

Ya, you are totally doing it wrong and I will tell you how to do it right.

  1. buy this... http://www.astrogaming.com/powered-splitter/3AA99-XXM9U-755.html

  2. buy this... http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B008DWGLLO/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o01_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

  3. buy this... http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B009UEBDX0/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o02_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

NOW. Plug in the #2 purchase into the xbox one stereo adapter... then into the splitter, #1 purchase. Plug in the #3 purchase to one hole on splitter and the other end to your computers "line-in jack" or mic jack. Plug in headset cord to other hole in powered splitter.

Then on elgato switch mic to the line in setting and TA-DAH! Thus recording their voice and your voice, using your headset microphone. No extra microphone needed.

Note, the #2 purchase is not "necessary" but I found it better than having the bulky powered splitter hanging off the controller. You are gonna want 6ft of #2 and maybe 12' of #3.
u/PlaidDragon · 3 pointsr/audiophile

A couple things:

I highly recommend the HD 598s. I've used them for over a year now and I still love them like the day I got them. Everything sounds good on them and they are super comfy - you could wear them for 24 straight hours. I got this replacement cable for them and It's very high-quality and well worth the $16

All that being said, I would not really recommend using them in public. Firstly, while I love the the tan and brown look, they will look kind of goofy in public since they aren't really your "normal" headphone colors (unless, or course, you get the ones in black). Aside from aesthetics, there is not really a good storage solution (I think there's a case you can get for them, but it's really bulky), so they might get broken if you put them in your backpack and aren't careful with it. Finally, they are open-back. You will be able to hear everything around you, and everything around you will be able to hear you. If I'm without speakers and don't want to wear headphones, I'll actually just set them on the desk and turn them up a bit and they double pretty well as makeshift speakers.

Anyway, they're really best for home use (I use them for gaming, music, and everything in between).

u/Damieok · 3 pointsr/buildapcsales

Your welcome, unfortunately the only affordable replacement cables come from China, so the shipping time is long.

The only US replacement cables I've seen are overpriced and hyped up for audiophiles.

The seller is on Amazon as well and has some variants with phone mics built in.

Edit: Fixed Link.

u/kjack9 · 3 pointsr/Vive

I got this one for use with my HD558s. I'm then running a 30 ft long headphone extension (15ft from computer to link box, 15 ft for Vive cable) back to a Behringer headphone amp and then a DAC. I also have other 15 ft extensions (DisplayPort, USB, power) from the link box back to my PC.

The end result? 30 ft of Vive leash, headphone cable is cable-wrapped back to a proper headphone amp and DAC. No plugging/unplugging, and good sound quality to boot.

Granted, take everything I just said above with the understanding that I don't have a Vive yet, and it might work great...or not!

u/fightinchunk · 3 pointsr/headphones

Most of the comments here are correct in regards to silver/copper with all else being equal. But these cables increased the max volume I was able to reach with my phone because of the lack of an inline mic, which adds enough resistance where I was able to notice a VOLUME difference(NOT SOUND QUALITY, that stayed the same once volume matched). The HD598cs cable comes with an inline mic that adds resistance and confirmed that the hd598cs cable added the most resistance out of the other 2.5mm - 3.5mm cable options I had at my disposal(hd598 cable, hd598cs cable, akg k545, 3 audio technica cables from m50x). The regular 598 cable, all 3 m50x cables, and the aftermarket cable akg k545 cable(all of which didn't have inline mics) all reached significantly louder volumes that the cables that had inline mics.

Keep in mind that this experiment was performed with a phone, which has a combined mic/headphone jack. When a TRRS jack with inline mic is inserted into the phone's headphone/mic combined port, this was the only time I noticed the differential in volume. When I tried performing the same experiment on my desktop's headphone jack, which has a separate mic jack, there was no noticable volume difference between the cables with inline mics and without them. Performing the same experiment with all my laptops(combined single mic/headphone port) produced the same results with my phone.

edit: I also remember reading a couple of posts here about the button being all fucked up, where some redditors were experiencing left/right issues after unknowingly damaging the multifunction button on the wire. If you feel like you're not getting the proper volume, get these cables if you didn't use the inline mic much.

u/OurEyesArentReal · 3 pointsr/Vive

> My assumption is that closed headphones adds more presence since it isolates you more from the real world.

This is true. But with closed headphones you get less sound stage and it feels more like you're wearing headphones than it feels like sounds are happening around you. Open headphones allow sounds to feel like there is some space between your ear and where the sounds is coming from. It's kind of a balancing act.

I'm going to be using my Sennheiser HD 558 for personal use. They're the most comfortable thing I put on everyday. I could probably wear them 24/7 and not notice them. They just kind of melt into your head and onto your ears... and they sounds great for the price.

I did buy a shorter cable and plan on ziptieing the Vive cables so I get a snugger fit without more cable flopping around. The cable that comes with Senn HD5XX headsets is at least 8 feet long. Great for at your desk, not great to be dragging around behind you in VR.

u/abarrelofmankeys · 3 pointsr/PSVR

EDIT AT BOTTOM

No problem, if for some reason you want to go with the senns considering I can give you a first hand review that they sound great, are pretty durable (I only say pretty because I take good care of stuff and am not hard on them, but I've had no problems) and are comfy, this is the cord I bought https://amzn.com/B00KAKBHKM

The long one has it's uses, it's nice for plugging into a pedal and playing guitar at night or plugging into a pc, but it's impractical for most day to day and portable use.

EDIT: http://cdn.arstechnica.net/wp-content/uploads/2016/03/psvr-4-980x654.jpg Apparently that's where headphones plug in half way down the cable (buds are above the move remotes), so it won't be as big of a problem as I thought, and a short one might actually be a problem. Ugh, so many things to consider.

For what it's worth, I've purchased off Amazon a 6-foot male-to-female AUX cable as an extension cord for my computer headphones. But the same model I got also comes in 12 and 25-foot lengths to make it a little more accommodating. I don't know if the quality for audio deteriorates after a certain length, but it's really nice for my computer and I imagine it would help get a good sound feel while playing consoles.

This is the one that I have.

u/Crumblycheese · 3 pointsr/AndroidGaming

The sound is good enough to take advantage of the speakers. I’ve had this cable on long enough to not notice a major difference between using a headphone jack vs. Bluetooth.

u/iStoleChipsChip · 2 pointsr/xboxone

You're on the right track. I recently purchase the same cable from BB a few weeks back, as I decided to "hide" all my devices behind the wall where the TV is mount.

Typically, the Kinect, when given a command, would blast an IR signal to your devices. With no line of sight, the signal never makes contact. The IR cable, when plugged into the 3.5 mm jack in the back of the Xbox, will pass off any verbal commands given to the Kinect as a secondary way to send the signal. As long as the pods at the end of the IR cable are near the sight of the IR receiver on the device, the commands will go through successfully. Keep in mind, this only works for the Kinect/Xbox; if you still want to use your remotes, you will need a repeater as /u/stmaximus mentioned.

E: Also, if you find that the IR cable isn't long enough, you can use just about any 3.5 mm extension to create more distance. Just an FYI if you were unaware.

u/NarwhalShibboleth · 2 pointsr/buildapc

Microphone-compatible 3.5mm extension cables are a separate thing. They're not easy to find. You can usually tell by the black (or otherwised colored) bars on the connector itself. Two bars is speaker audio only, while 3 bars is speaker plus microphone.

Edit: Here's an example. Googling "Headset extension" may be your best bet.

u/warinthestars · 2 pointsr/audio

so your headphones are TRRS (Tip Ring Ring Sleeve) meaning it has four contacts to make the microphone work. The Audio/Mic splitter makes it so you can plug the headphones into the two ports to make it work. It takes 4 contacts and splits them to the necessary places.

Your headphone extension, only has three contacts TRS (Tip Ring Sleeve). This is why it's not working for you.

You'll need somthing like this: https://www.amazon.com/StarTech-com-3-5mm-Position-Headset-Extension/dp/B008DWGLLO

u/Ulyssys · 2 pointsr/HyperX

A 4-pole 3.5mm splitter works. Depending on the distance from your computer/sound card port to your head, you might also want to get an extension cable since the Cloud II's cable is somewhat short without the USB dongle.

If you're interested, these are the ones I bought for when I am using 3.5mm:

I bought this mic along with one of these adapters since I have a pretty good set of headphones. It works alright. It's not perfect, but I rarely need to use voice chat and I really like my current headphones.

u/MrMassador · 2 pointsr/xboxone

ah I think you're right!

So to be clear, something like this would likely work? What about this one? MEE has been a trusted brand to me and I'd ideally like to stick with them if you think this is something that would work

u/3DXYZ · 2 pointsr/MotoG

Your Aux cord, the one you use to plug into the hearing aid... does it have 3 rings on the plug or 2? The earbuds/mic have the 3 rings on the plug, 2 for stereo and 1 for mic.

Perhaps all you need is an aux cord with a mic on it, so that it has a 3 ring plug. This way you'll have your hearing aid for output and the cord itself will have the mic. This may be the solution. These cords do exist. For example heres one on amazon.

There are others as well. I googled "aux cord with mic" and several items are out there. Some have coiled wire like this one. I'm not sure that is ideal but there are several options and design choices.

If your aux cord is 2 ringed, standard headphone jack, i would consider trying a 3 ringed aux cord with a built in mic. This may solve the issue.

I got a "free" pair of beats when I bought my macbook. I use them for my Xbox as well. You just have to buy the right kind of mic cable. I use this one (link below) and it works just fine but I have to speak a little loudly into it because the mic is not always close to my face. I have read in other places some people recommend an in-line boom microphone though.

I was actually looking into those 668s before I got these MP ones. They do technically have a detachable cord, but not quite like what I meant. I wanted to be able to use my mic adapter (not this exactly but it's the same thing). I appreciate the recommendation but the only reason I was asking was to see if there was anything else as good or better for as much or less.

I do agree that the MP headphones are not $20 headphones though since they practically require mods to be usable. I do consider them absolutely fantastic $40ish headphones though.

Had this for my 598s and they come in some pretty decent length https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00KAKBHKM/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_i_vitwDbZ6HK4CE

u/tusca99 · 2 pointsr/headphones

Why not just buy another cable? You won't get much better sound than your hd598s, buying an aftermarket cable like this (https://www.amazon.com/NewFantasia-Replacement-Upgrade-Sennheiser-Headphones/dp/B00KAKBHKM/ref=sr_1_1_sspa?ie=UTF8&qid=1523042550&sr=8-1-spons&keywords=hd599+cable&psc=1) would save you money that can be spent on something that you don't have

u/Archlicht · 2 pointsr/Vive

This is the reason I didn't buy a pair of Sennheisers. Shortest cable I could find to work with them is 4 ft. Although I suppose if you keep it coiled it won't be horrendous.

I don't see any reason why you can't replace your cable as you wish. Just make sure the 2.5mm end has the same type of twist-lock as the original. Here is the first one that came up on a Google search. This one comes in four different lengths.

u/D4rk_N1nj4 · 2 pointsr/headphones

Looking for an adapter for my 598Cs's 6.3mm cable. Looks like the cable is 2.5mm TRRS to 6.3mm. I need an adapter that converts that 6.3mm to 3.5mm. I purchased this one a few weeks ago, but it didn't work at all.

Someone suggested yesterday that I might need one that converts to TRRS, but that seems near impossible to find, and the few I can find seem sketchy and expensive (here and here). I'm at a bit of a loss so any help to find this adapter or something that works would be great. If I can't find anything here, I'm gonna go into a BestBuy or Guitar Center and ask around if they might be able to help.

EDIT: Been thinking about it more and is my issue that the cable is TRRS and therefore converting that to be just sound is impossible? Should I get a new cable like this?

u/crimson_713 · 2 pointsr/Metal

Sennheiser makes an incredible set of open back audiophile headphones that are my go-to for music. Open back, removable cable, high quality audiophile sound, and comfortable as fuck. They fit my big ass head with plenty of room to adjust in both directions. They're fairly durable, so long as you're not tossing them around or banging them against something. Mine have survived two drops, although I don't recommend testing it, haha.

I will say that the cables that come with the headphones aren't that great, so you might want to consider a replacement. They're a bit pricey, but they've finally dropped under $150USD. They were $189.99 when I bought them, and now they're $139.99. Hell of a deal for the quality.

u/MrEleventy · 2 pointsr/headphones

You can buy a 3.5mm cable for almost the same price. LINK

Also, I want to upgrade the cable to one that is a little bit shorter. I've been using https://www.amazon.com/Replacement-Audio-upgrade-Sennheiser-Headphones/dp/B00KAKBHKM for about a year and a half. It is decent and comes in different lengths.

u/morelikepotatos · 2 pointsr/hardwareswap

I have one of these: http://www.amazon.com/Replacement-Audio-upgrade-Sennheiser-Headphones/dp/B00KAKBHKM/ref=sr_1_fkmr1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1449982201&sr=8-1-fkmr1&keywords=hd+558+custom+cable

and also my hd 600's (and the 598's), come with one (although it's not braided). These cables are EXCELLENT, and that stock cable is freaking insane lol. It's pretty much impossible to use these headphones on the go without these. Oh an also because they are sleeved they don't tangle, and the spring at the end keeps the cable from wearing down overtime. It's pretty much good all around.

u/Kurumiz · 2 pointsr/headphones

own some hd598's, hope i can help

i don't have a nontwist cable to test, but im pretty sure you need a nontwist cable to put into your headphones. you need to twist to shove them in all the way(if they aren't in all the way, you will only get sound out of your left ear, or quiet sound, or other stuffs). essentially no, you cannot use the headset without locking the cable into place.

i step on my cables a lot, and imo this is actually perfect. it keeps the cable in the jack perfectly. if you keep pulling on it for some months it'll seem to come loose easier, but cables are dirt cheap to replace in stead of you usually needing to get new headphones when you inevitably break your cable (went through 5+ headphones before i got my sennheisers)

i recommend grabbing one of the replacement cables sold on amazon. they hold into your pc jacks better than the cable+2.5>3.5mm adapter that it comes with in the first place. i got the 3m and it's been great (i broke my old one due to twisting it really really hard inside the jack with my chair, completely my fault. other than that it's held up great.)

i really don't understand the need to not have the twist mechanism, it's pretty beneficial. is there any reason why you'd actually need to remove it?

u/rehpotsirhc123 · 2 pointsr/pcmasterrace

You might want to swap cables if you pick those up because they come with a 10 foot cable that has a 1/4" connector, any 3.5mm to 3.5mm male cable will work, if the ends are skinny enough but they sell ones made for headphones. |

u/Traegs_ · 2 pointsr/pcmasterrace

I'll never not recommend Sennheiser, they are amazing. Even their budget headphones are really good and sound leagues better than similarly priced headphones from "premium" companies like Skullcandy and Turtle Beach.

Comfortable, sound great, replaceable cable, and easy to clean (those ear cushions pop right off, I hand wash them with Dawn dish soap about 2-3 times a year).

The default cable with the 6.33m plug and 3.5mm adapter is a little annoying, I replaced mine with one of these and it's been great.

u/louderthanthis · 2 pointsr/Vive

I use my old 518's for the Vive. I bought one of these in a 1.2m length and they're stylish and just perfect https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00KAKBHKM/

No coiling. Short enough that it can just be there.

u/leppermessiah1 · 2 pointsr/Vive

The 558's and 518's have the same removable cable as the 598's (which I have and sound phenominal). The 598's come bundled with a shorter cable, but you can purchase one here: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00KAKBHKM/ref=oh_aui_search_detailpage?ie=UTF8&psc=1

Edit: It's only the 598 Special Edition that comes bundled with the shorter cable, but they are all replacable.

I grabbed this one from Amazon for around $20. Certainly could have found something cheaper but the cable looks awesome and feels incredibly durable. Took a little while to arrive but other than that I don't have any complaints.

I love it as well. I just transferred schools and hardly know anyone, but all I've wanted to do the past few days is show it off to some people who might appreciate how awesome it sounds!

u/RevolvingSlam · 2 pointsr/buildapcsales

I actually have a pair of these with me, that's only referring to the end that connects to your computer or device (it's just saying it's 3.5mm as opposed to the larger 1/2 inch connector). The end that connects to the headphones is mini-XLR so unfortunately it wouldn't be compatible.

Nice find! I've had my gold K240's for like 15 years, and I've worn them at my desk like every day. I've only had to repair a busted wire in the left can and replace the cable. I also swapped out the ear pads with a set of these like three years ago and they're still holding up and way more comfortable than the vinyl ones, especially after they started cracking.

u/Ultramegasaurus · 2 pointsr/headphones
u/Dallagen · 2 pointsr/headphones

You can get a cable for like $30. The seller states it doesn't work for the HE400S but after they switched to 2.5mm mono connectors it'll work fine.

u/covertash · 2 pointsr/headphones

I use a similar cable to the one you linked for my HD700's (they share similar type of cables, so they're interchangeable), just that mine are red:

https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00KBBR8T4/

I'm not really a fan of the braiding. It's somewhat stiff and reminds me of PC case fan cables, but other than that I haven't had any issues with it in the 9+ months I have had it.

I got sick of swapping cables back and forth between the 700 and 400i, though, so I eventually caved and bought a separate cable for the 400i - but this time without the braiding:

https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B01LC7BVS4

So far so good. No noticeable loss in fidelity or anything - not that I could really notice that kind of thing to begin with. Feel free to pick whichever suits your needs aesthetically.

u/Shake_Oh · 2 pointsr/microphones

Do you have a budget? Almost all microphones after $40 have removable cables.

If you have a low budget. You could always buy a 3.5mm extension and a 3.5mm jack and solder it onto one of those cheap desktop microphones from a business depot or walmart.

Here it is. Poor lighting with the monitor on haha... basically a lead from the back of the PC, wraps around the monitor, then I plug my headphones into that port. Gives it some flexibility and also will pull straight out instead of at an angle from the back or top of the pc.

These are SUPER cheap too. Just search around and you can find one that fits you well.

u/Zio-X · 2 pointsr/HeadphoneAdvice

And the cables connect to both ear pieces, correct? I wouldn't be able to use a shorter cable (if it's not relatively short to the following link already?) https://www.amazon.com/NewFantasia-Replacement-Technica-Headphones-1-2meters/dp/B00N0XP2ES.

I've watched a few reviews and the audio quality seems to not be too too great, but that's from people who've had better audio headphones, so I'm lost.

I've also heard the cable falls out of phones kinda easily. "The only negative point I can give to these is the cheap feel of the braces around the cups and the jacks being threaded for the 1/4" adapter. The weight of the connector causes them to easily slide out of phones and other devices."

I'm unsure if I misunderstood or what.

Yep, that's a good solution, I've ditched my ModMic too and just bought the Blue Snowball ICE. The more expensive version with 3 pick up patterns is only worth the money if you want to record instruments or singing.

With regard to the 3,5mm extension cable for the Superlux...just get an Amazon basics one, they are cheap enough to just say fuck it and get a new one once the cable memory gets too annoying.

I have some recommendations and suggestions. I know there's a lot of info, but you should know this if you want to get more value for your money. I ran out of space before I could cover everything, so just ask me if you have questions.

Headphones

---

The first thing you should determine is whether you need sound isolation or not.

  • Open-back: the earcups have perforations/openings that allow sound to freely pass through. The benefits to this is generally a larger soundstage and better imaging. This can also help if your ears tend to sweat.

  • Closed-back: the earcups have solid shells that isolate sound from passing through to various extent.

Next, you should figure out which sound signature you prefer.

  • Balanced/flat/neutral: doesn't over- or under-emphasize the bass or treble.
  • Warm: emphasizes the bass.
  • Dark: recesses the treble. A headphone can be warm and dark.
  • Bright: emphasizes the treble.
  • U-shape: emphasizes the bass and treble a little.
  • V-shape: emphasizes the bass and treble more than U-shaped.
  • Mid-forward: the mids are louder than the bass and treble. The mids may be emphasized or the bass and treble may be recessed.

Sub-bass is how deep the bass goes and is where rumble comes from.

Mid-bass is where impact/slam comes from.

Generally, for competitive shooters, as little bass as possible is favorable because bass overpowers or overshadows footsteps and other sound cues.

Lastly, you should know what sound characteristics constitute positional audio and pertain to immersion.

  • Soundstage: is produced by the headphone, not the game. It's perceived space and environment of sound. It's the size of the sound field around you. A small soundstage makes the environment around you sound confined or boxed in. With a large soundstage, the environment sounds much more spatial, open and natural. You can't comprehend it without experiencing it.

  • Imaging: is inherent to the audio content. It's how accurately the locations of sounds/objects are reproduced.

  • Separation: is how you discern individual sounds from a range of overlapping sounds. This is only important in competitive shooters.

    Personal headphone recommendations:

  • Audio-Technica ATH-AD700X (open-back):

has recessed sub-bass and emphasized treble. Has clean bass and a little harsh treble. Has a huge soundstage, excellent imaging, separation and clarity, and great detail retrieval.

  • Beyerdynamic DT990 (600 ohms) (open-back):

has recessed sub-bass, emphasized mid-bass, and very emphasized treble. Has clean bass and a little splashy or overly sparkly treble. Has a huge soundstage and excellent imaging, separation, clarity and detail retrieval.

  • Philips Fidelio X2 (open-back):

has emphasized sub-bass, mid-bass and treble. Has clean bass and smooth treble. The soundstage is very wide, like the others I've mentioned, but it lacks some depth. It's probably only noticeable if you play competitively or compare it side-by-side with headphones that are deeper. This affects the imaging from front to back. The imaging from left to right is excellent. Separation and clarity are excellent. Detail retrieval is great, but bass overpowers sound cues a lot.

  • Sennheiser HD598 (open-back):

is mid-forward and has recessed sub-bass. Has clean bass, smooth treble, and excellent clarity. I haven't used it much, so my impressions are that it has a large soundstage and good imaging, separation and detail retrieval.

I also compare to AKG K52, AKG Q701, Audeze LCD-2 Classic, HiFiMan HE400i (the revision), HiFiMan HE-500, HyperX Cloud, Monoprice Monolith M1060, Philips SHP9500, Sennheiser HD700, Sennheiser HD800, Superlux HD662 EVO, Superlux HD668B, Superlux HD669, Superlux HD681 EVO, Tritton Pro+ and Turtle Beach Ear Force XP Seven.

My evaluations are based on games, not music. I test headphones mostly in BF:BC2, BF3, BF4 and R6S.

    Setup

    ---

Antlion ModMic and Massdrop Minimic are compatible with all headphones.

V-MODA BoomPro is compatible with Philips Fidelio X2 and V-MODA Crossfade M-100 of the aforementioned headphones.

You can connect the headphone and mic to the PS4 by using an audio USB adapter. The one I linked has separate jacks for the headphone and mic, so in order to use it with V-MODA BoomPro, you need a Y-splitter, which is included with the mic. The other 3.5mm mics have an own cable, so there's no need for a Y-splitter.

USB mics, like AT2020USB, Snowball and Yeti, connect directly to the PS4.

If the cables aren't long enough, then just use an aux extension cable or a USB extension cable.

The PS4 isn't capable of powering all headphones sufficiently, so you may need a sound card or a headphone amplifier and a DAC (digital-to-analog converter). A Sound card has an amp and a DAC built in and sacrifice sound quality for features. You need a DAC because USB and optical are digital signals and PS4 has no analog outputs. There's a common problem with reversed left and right channels when using USB DACs, so I'll only list DACs with optical. I'll only list USB sound cards that officially support PS4.

Power isn't just impedance dependent, it's also sensitivity dependent, which many new to this hobby overlook. If a headphone has a low impedance rating and a high sensitivity rating, it will be very easy to drive. If a headphone has a high impedance rating and a high sensitivity rating, it should be easy to drive. If a headphone has a high impedance rating and a low sensitivity rating, it will be hard to drive. If a headphone has a low impedance rating and a low sensitivity rating, it will be very hard to drive.

There's no consensus on where 'high' impedance starts at. I've read/heard anywhere from 50 ohms to 300 ohms. For sensitivity, there are two different measurements used for this: SPL/mW and SPL/V. 100 dB SPL/mW and 110 SPL/V are considered high.

If you don't want to ever deal with this, then I recommend just getting a very powerful sound card or amp, e.g. Creative Sound BlasterX G5 or Schiit Magni 3.

Audio-Technica ATH-AD700X, Philips Fidelio X2 and Sennheiser HD598 are very loud for me out of the controller or by using an audio USB adapter. The 600-ohm version of Beyerdynamic DT990 is too quiet.

Mics generally don't work with amps, so you'll have to connect it to an audio USB adapter, or to the controller with a TRRS Y-splitter. You recognize them by the three black rings on their connector. You need to use the included Y-splitter with V-MODA BoomPro.

With a sound card, you can use both the headphone and mic with it. You need a TRRS Y-splitter if the mic has a separate cable.

To connect a separate amp to a DAC, you need RCA cables.

    Sound cards:

  • Astro MixAmp Pro TR
  • Creative Sound BlasterX G1
  • Creative Sound BlasterX G5
  • Turtle Beach Elite Pro TAC

    Amps and DACs:

  • Audioengine D1 (both)
  • FiiO D3 (DAC)
  • FX Audio DAC-X6 (both)
  • Mayflower ARC (both)
  • Micca OriGen G2 (both)
  • Schiit Magni 3 (amp)

It's surprising that you don't have a headphone jack in the back of your desktop. In any event a 3.5mm male to female cable would work. Plug the male end into the front of your desktop, run the female end around the the rear of your PC, plug the headphone plug into the female end and the mic plug into your PC.

You can get one of them at walmart for like $5 or less.

u/Disturbedsleep · 2 pointsr/techsupport

What are you plugging the headphones in to. Is it the front jack or back jack of your computer. I think the issue is the jack you are plugging them into. Not all plugs are the same. One option is a headphone extension lead and see if that makes any difference then you'll know it the plug on your headphones that isn't quite sitting correctly.

u/doubletwist · 2 pointsr/Guitar

This is the easiest solution, and it's what I do.

Her is one example. It's only 6 bucks.

AmazonBasics 3.5mm Male to Female Stereo Audio Cable - 6 Feet (1.83 Meters)

u/Aspirant_Fool · 2 pointsr/techsupport

Smaller jack is 2.5mm, so a 2.5mm to 3.5mm adapter, and then two 3.5mm extensions would you let you plug it into your PC.

The mic might not work, radio mics are designed to pass voltage through to trigger the radio to key up remotely, PC soundcard might not allow enough current to pass for the mic to function. Or it might be fine, either way, less than 20 bucks to find out.

A splitter?

or this

u/Swarthy_Immigrant · 2 pointsr/deaf

I beta-tested the /u/Biblos_Geek headphone and pretty much I found the same positive results listed by the other reviewers I just read here.

I will mention what I purchased to pair up the 2E1+Vibe to make it work. The headphone to me was free but I purchased these parts to make it work (costs may have changed on Amazon since my purchase).

Class D amp at $22

3.5mm audio splitter $5

3.5mm male to male cable $5

So my costs out of pocket were under $35 (give or take). Set up was fairly simple - no more difficult than wiring up a TV with external speakers. I am profoundly deaf in one ear and somewhat normal hearing in my other working ear. I would be willing to beta_test for this again if asked. So a positive experience over all.

u/R0tn3k · 2 pointsr/NoStupidQuestions

there are adapters that have your two connectors as input and the one needed on your PC as output (cost roughly 10 bucks I think)

There are probably better options if you want just bluetooth or wired under $100, but if you want the flexibility to do either you could get:

KZ ZS5 ($36)

Comply 500 bore foam tips ($20)

KZ bluetooth cable ($30)

KZ ZS5 Upgrade Cable (up to $15)

And come in at $101.

Take a look into ZS5 reviews, you'll see the updated version of it has sharp highs and a semi-recessed bass, but the isolation from Comply's foam tips helps the bass tremendously and the waxguard takes care of the sibilance on the high end making them a lot more balanced. I don't know if I'd call it bass boosted at that point, but I listen to a lot of EDM/rock/drum & bass with my ZS6 with comply tips (which sounds very similar) and I'm not disappointed by a lack of bass at all.

That bluetooth cable is the only one I'd recommend for KZ headphones, the others are a mixed bag. I use it for the gym myself and it can hold a charge for several days while being used about an hour in the gym each day.

The cable isn't necessary, but recommended. I keep one in my gym bag for if the bluetooth battery dies (hasn't had it die yet charging it once a week... but I probably need to go to the gym more often). The stock cable is kind of sticky, doesn't keep a good fit around the ear, holds its coil shape a little annoyingly, and has a lot of sound interference anytime it bumps/scratches anything. It's usable, but it's worth it to upgrade imo.

I have the ZS6 myself (I prefer the look with the vents and wanted a green IEM) and have only tried the ZS5, so I have a lot more experience with the ZS6 but they sound very similar to me (the v2 version of the ZS5). If you have any questions let me know.

Just skimmed through Amazon, I couldn't find any AptXHD 2 pin or MMCX neckbands, but if you are ok with normal AptX you could get these or if you want to get MMCX headphones, these. Otherwise, I think the ES100 is a good idea, maybe just get a short cable to go with it and clip it to a shirt pocket or collar? Or run the cable through your shirt down into your pocket.

Amazon- MMCX 2-pin

Make sure that you're getting the right cable. If you have a 2 pin double check whether it's a .78 or .75 mm.

I'd definitely go for something more upscale for those headphones. If you have MMCX I'd get these. And maybe ask around on /r/headphones because they'll have more input than what I can scrounge from the top of my drunk ass head.

You seem very knowledgeable about this subject, mind if I ask you another question? I recently purchased this cable to replace the stock cable that came with the HE-400i, as it was much too short for my liking. Would you happen to know if I can use that cable with the Sundara? Additionally, do cables have any impact on sound quality? You mentioned that the Sundara's quality will already be hindered by my Xonar. Will it be furthered hindered if I use that cable over the stock cable?

u/seamonn · 1 pointr/headphones

I would take my chances that it will probably sound schiit.
Use something like this instead.

u/PMMeYourKeyboard · 1 pointr/pcmasterrace

OK, you need a DAC ( or, a long 3.5mm extension cable ). Schiit make good DACs though you're looking down the barrel of a $100 device anyway. I would just grab a 3.5mm extension long enough to reach your PC but not too long as it degrades quality and can introduce noise.

An AMP is an amplifier. Takes a signal and makes it louder and more powerful to drive higher impedance headphones.

A DAC is a digital analog converter. Converts digital signals, like from your PC, into analog signals for your headphones.

u/Downvotes_catpics · 1 pointr/answers

I just did it, and saw thousands of 3.5mm cord extenders.

Like this one

If it's a standard 3.5mm, it will use the same industry-standard audio cable as any other audio device that uses 3.5mm plugs, unless your microphone has some proprietary plug/wire style, in which case you could be at the manufacturer's mercy.

u/PhotoPetey · 1 pointr/gopro

Not that I have seen, but you can get a 3.5mm extension cable.

u/Babou13 · 1 pointr/xboxone

https://www.amazon.com/StarTech-com-3-5mm-Position-Headset-Extension/dp/B008DWGLLO that should work. The mixamp side of the Astro cable should be the 4 pole end.. So that is just an extension cable for it. Should just be able to look for a 3.5mm trrs extension

u/unrlmth · 1 pointr/diyaudio

You want a 4 pole 3.5mm extension cable, such as this one: http://www.amazon.com/StarTech-com-3-5mm-Position-Headset-Extension/dp/B008DWGLLO

The one you have linked has only 3 poles and the microphone wont work.

u/jamvanderloeff · 1 pointr/buildapc

You can get a 4 pole extension lead that should work with your current headset's mic, https://www.amazon.com/StarTech-com-3-5mm-Position-Headset-Extension/dp/B008DWGLLO/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1469581290&sr=8-1&keywords=headset+extension

Modmic will work with any regular 3.5mm extension cable.

u/HyperX-Felinni · 1 pointr/headphones

On the Audio Manager Device Advanced Settings can you un-check "Make front and rear output devices playback two different audio streams simultaneously"?

Results? Any different?

I suggest the Startech MUYHSFMM which is a 4-pole headset splitter. If this is still too short you can also get a 4-pole 3.5mm extension. This configuration does not use the volume control dongle. Otherwise you can just do the single 4-pole extension to the volume control.

4-Pole Headset splitter: https://www.amazon.com/StarTech-MUYHSFMM-Headset-Splitter-Adapter/dp/B0058DOWH6/ref=sr_1_2?s=electronics&ie=UTF8&qid=1468511520&sr=1-2&keywords=startech+4+pole

The audio degradation is pretty minimal. You would still need to select your desktop speakers or headset which can be done through the sound properties.

u/ravissimo · 1 pointr/xboxone

hey OP, I have a setup question. I already have the startech adapter listed above and I have some regular headphones (Senn HD598) and a third party mic (antlion modmic). They all work fine when I plug them in to the startech connector and then plug that in to the headset adapter, but then I only get stereo audio.

If I plug my headphones into my Turtle Beach DSS2 for 5.1 audio, then I only need to plug in my mic into the headset adapter. The mic is 3.5mm but doesn't work plugged straight into the headset adapter. If I plug it into the startech adapter, but keep the headphones plugged into the DSS2, then the mic works, but the chat audio goes through the startech adapter, not the optical audio port that the DSS2 is hooked up to.

I'm assuming this is because the mic only has 2 black bands, not the 3 black bands required for the headset adapter. I see you have a 2.5mm female to 3.5mm male connector listed under the second bullet point, but it seems kind of pointless to plug a 3.5mm cord into the connector (3.5mm to 2.5mm) and then plug that into the microsoft supplied chat connector (2.5mm to 3.5mm) included with the headset adapter just to get it to work.

Are there any 3.5mm to 3.5mm connectors that convert 2 black bands to 3 black bands for use with the headset adapter? then I only need one connector not two? Would this adapter work for chat only, or would it still push chat audio through the headset adapter and not the optical audio output?

u/e60deluxe · 1 pointr/techsupport

they did for the XBOX 360, but not sure about the One.

However, microsoft uses the standard cell phone headset jack with the One headset, so if the controller didnt recognize it, you would just need a cable like this:

http://www.amazon.com/EZOPower-Headset-Adapter-Smartphone-smartphone/dp/B0046FMRGA/

http://www.amazon.com/StarTech-com-MUHSMF2M-Position-Headset-Extension/dp/B008DWGLLO/

u/ajairo · 1 pointr/techsupport

I think this is what you would need. If you need an extension, here is an extension

u/livingspeedbump · 1 pointr/xboxone

Yeah I thought the same thing until i tried it, and I was blown away by the DSS when I got it after it came out. I'm really picky about my sound and I simply couldn't do without it now. And again, I prefer the virtual over actual headsets with 5 drivers in each ear (as I have a few of those) because the sound is so much punchier in a headset with 2 larger drivers, and the spatial awareness is easily just as good.

Another solution I often use with the "cabling issue" is that I simply bought a 3.5mm TRRS cable and simply set the chat/volume mix where I like it and still just have that cable running across the floor, leaving the MixAmp tucked nicely away under the tv.

So you are correct about the cable. The headset adapter should have come with a short adapter cable (around 3 inches) that goes from 2.5mm to 3.5mm, essentially allowing you to use whatever cables you had been using to plug into your 360 controller. So if you have that adapter all you would need is a 2.5mm cable.

So the standard Turtle Beach adapter is exactly the same as the Microsoft Stereo Headset Adapter. No difference at all. The Plus included the "superhuman hearing" which essentially is a compressor and high end boost, so footsteps sound louder, but explosions and gunshots sound a little weak with it on. The EQ settings are pretty good, and I much prefer the settings (on MixAmp or Plus) solution over having a "treble" and "bass" knob, as they always seem to get turned by accident. For me, The self monitoring alone is worth it. I hate not being able to hear myself. Keep in mind the MixAmp has self monitoring as well, and I would highly recommend just sticking with a simple adapter if using that. The DSS on the other hand doesn't, so the adapter would come in handy. Either way I'd say it's definitely wroth the extra $10 bucks. Sucks that we have to spend $40 bucks on a silly adapter, but comparatively it's worth the price.

u/Asstrophysicist · 1 pointr/headphones

Thanks for the feedback. I was also looking into an extension cable so i can run the wire under my desk. Do you have one you recommend that will support a mic as well?

My car does not have bluetooth audio streaming, but it does have an aux port. I play music from my Google Play Music subscription on my daily commute through my phone's headphone jack. Sometimes I want to skip a song or pause the music I'm playing. This often ends up being frustrating and dangerous.

Is there an android device that will make this easier and safer for me? Maybe an android powered music player with physical play/pause and skip buttons? Would I be better off getting a smartwatch? (If so, is there a cheap one that works well with Google Play Music?)

I've tried doing the "Ok Google, skip track" thing, but that was frustrating, too.

EDIT: Maybe this aux cord w/ buttons will do the trick. Does anyone know if it works with a Nexus 6P?

So it looks like I can get a 3.5mm to 2.5mm adapter to use the headphones with normal cables. This doesn't have the best reviews but people are mostly complaining it doesn't work with headsets and people say it fits the 598 (may need to remove locking mechanism). Then I can use get an inline mic cable. 4ft is a little short so I can add an extender cable and finally, a Y-cable for separate headphone/mic ports. Then I can just use a shorter regular 3.5mm cable with the Vive. I wonder what the odds all of that will work is?

u/AV3Nguyen · 1 pointr/headphones

Maybe this?

u/DVNO · 1 pointr/techsupport

First thing I would do is replace whatever headset / mic / headphones / speakers you use with a cable like this. Make sure it's selected as the only output device. Play a youtube video. Make sure you don't hear any noise (indicated a monitor speaker or something is active).

Then, open Windows Voice Recorder and play a test recording. Make sure the mic picks up your voice.

Now that you know both are working properly, play a youtube video and record using the voice recorder. See if you get any youtube audio in the recording.

Context to link: already own this cord for my headphones, but it's starting to wear out, so I saved the link for later.

John was a headphone enthusiast. He was constantly upgrading his DACs and headphones, but he always settled with one pair in the end. His Sennheiser HD 598s. Even with a vintage look and minor cosmetic damage, John loved them very much, but had one problem with them. The cord kept on breaking. John babied his headphone cords, but his HD 598s kept losing audio in one side, forcing him to buy a new cord. John was discussing his problem with his co-workers, who suggested buying a knock off cord on amazon. John found a cord that had a weaved covering and decided to try it. Since then, he has not purchased any new cords, but he found a better headphone and decided to use that instead.

The default cable they provide does not work with headphones, as it's actually the larger plug (what are they, 6.5mm?), with a 3.5mm adapter. You can buy a different cable from these guys, which will fit much better, or mod the headset to accept 3.5mm cables (requires removing the locking mechanism).

What are you trying to accomplish? The terminal inside the headphone is 2.5mm, that adapter is backwards if you're wanting to plug a 3.5mm cord directly into the headphone.

I bought the shorter cord directly from Sennheiser a couple years ago, no issues other than the cord is very microphonic. It's not exactly what you want but it's an elegant solution. Something like this would also work, no experience with that brand though.

If you lie down in the dark and focus on the track, you can very clearly distinguish every note that every part plays (probably to the point where you'd be able to transcribe the music quite accurately). I would not quantify the bass as weak; it has punch, even if not earth-shaking.

However, they have a laid back feel - they might feel slow for someone listening to fast, dynamic, lively music. They're great for anything, but if you discriminate and need the phones to closely suit the genre, then these are probably best for classical, jazz and movies.

They're also larger than the ATH M-series phones, but are said to be more comfortable because of their lesser headband clamping force.

But with regard to what you said, though I got mine for $99, $156 is still half price, a fantastic value.

One final caveat - the HD 598 phones come with a detachable 3.5 mm-in 6.3 mm-out cable, which will not be connectible to a computer or portable music player, and you'll have to resort to the included adaptor, which may be impractical for some users. This cable would alleviate that problem ($16).

Since people are talking about cord length, I thought I'd chime in with a small recommendation. If anyone is interested, I purchased these awesome cables for my 598SEs. Just the right length and excellent and sturdy fit. Might be a good rec for those looking to replace the cables that come with these headphones.

I personally use Creative Aurana Live! 2 with Asus Xonar DGX. That combo is very cheap and has insane quality and surround if properly configured. When it comes to audio never buy anything marked as "gaming".

Creative Aurvana Live! 2 (Around $60-$65): https://www.amazon.com/Creative-Aurvana-Headset-Drivers-Line/dp/B00FC2R7ZC/

Asus Xonar DGX (Around $40): https://www.amazon.com/Xonar-DGX-GX2-5-Audio-Engine/dp/B007TMZ1BK/

I don't recommend buying anything other than DG (PCI) or DGX (PCIe) since the software will be different and it might lack some options.

Better Cable (highly recommended): https://www.amazon.com/NewFantasia-Replacement-Upgrade-Sennheiser-Headphones/dp/B00KAKGQCQ/

The default cable is thin and only coated in rubber while the Sennheiser one is sleeved and very solid. It also delivers a better quality of sound.

Those products might look old and not gamer like but I have personally tried even $150 sound blaster ae-5 card and this $40 innocent looking card beat it hands down.

Can't tell you how many times I got called out for wallhack in CS:GO due to amazing surround depth and sound separation.

If you will decide on that I can even give you instructions on how to configure it. I'm using this combo for few years already.

> Braided Cable replacement: This is an excellent choice if you prefer to have braided cables over the stock ones with a much shorter length.

Thank you so much for recommending this! I have gotten so pissed at the damn stock cable over the past year of owning the 558s. It's ridiculously long and unwieldy. I keep most of its length bundled together on my desk to keep from running it over, but that bundled part always falls off. I just Prime'd myself the cable you linked. It'll be here tomorrow!

I've got the AKG K240 Mk II. They're the same thing, just different colors, an extra cable (coiled), and an extra set of earpads (velour). Definitely worth getting the regular version, especially given that they are right at your price point.
Just know that these are not "bassy" headphones. They are semi-open, which allows you to hear sounds around you, and people can hear what you're listening to. This makes them sound more natural. They have a decent soundstage, meaning you can hear what direction a sound is coming from. The effect depends on the source audio though.
The replaceable cable is a huge benefit. Running over the cable with your chair no longer means the end of your headphones (soldering those tiny wires is not easy for an amateur like me). The downside is that they only work with AKG's proprietary connector, and the cables aren't super cheap, but it's still cheaper than buying a new pair of headphones. And you can always pick up a better cable (longer, shorter, braided, whatever suits your needs).
Oh yeah, in case you were wondering, these headphones are extremely comfortable to wear. I use them for many hours every day and I never become fatigued. In comparison, my MDR-V6 would become uncomfortable to wear after a while, and the high treble on them would also start to give me a headache.
In summary, I think AKG K240 has amazing features, quality, and comfort at a great price.

I was planning on doing this myself after I wasted money buying a few cables. Turns out the wiring on AKG's miniXLR is different so all these sorts of short mic cables don't work even if advertised as stereo.

This is another option to use with more common short 3.5mm cables but it looks like it sticks out too much for my taste.

Ended up buying this which is short enough to be out of the way, unlike the stock ones that came with my K712.

REPLACING CABLE questions. TH900

the connections at my jack, and right cup, have both deteriorated so that i have to fiddle with the cable to get sound. i must chop and resolder the jack and both cups (to keep length equal), or replace with new cable and just solder to the cups.

  • which do you recommend?
  • if i replace the cable, should i install small jacks at the cups (to reduce future twisting stress), or just solder in directly to the driver? (i will not pursue jacks if it would require sawing into the wood cups.)
  • if i replace the cable, should i get this which has 3 poles at the cups, or this with 2 poles at the cups? here is the driver opened up. there's only 2 leads presently, however you can see 4 contacts on the driver. this leads to the next question...
  • since there are 4 contacts, can i (should i) install a balanced cable instead? do balanced cables have 3 leads at each ear? if so, does the 3rd lead get connected to one of the 2 presently unused contacts on the driver (in the picture)? which one?
  • finally, if i did install a balanced cable (with a 2.5mm 4-pole male), that's great for use with my DAP, but i would want an adapter to normal 3.5mm 3-pole male to use with my phone. i cannot find any such adapter on amazon. i can't believe it's not there... any tips for searching? this is the closest thing i've found, however it doesn't mention that the female side is expecting 4-pole, therefore I'm concerned that the result might mix/swap/distort the channels (because maybe the adapter is expecting 3-pole input).

I've got some Hifiman HE-400is that I've been using daily since last christmas. Recently the right cord started glitching, so I ordered this cord. The right cord wouldn't stay in the jack, so I set that one up for return and ordered another one. Got the other one today, same problem. The original cord stays in fine, but both sides of the new one just fall out of the right jack if pulled on even slightly.

Is there any simple fix to this? If not, does anyone have experience with Hifiman's warranty policy, specifically regarding Amazon orders? I'm hesitant to file a warranty claim, considering the problem may be resolved on an official cord, but I can't afford to spend $100+ on a possibility.

Just buy a 3.5mm male to female extender cable that has a low profile. Something like this should work.

This if you need shorter.

Not going to find a cheap extender with inline remote though.

What headphone/earphone are you using at the moment?

u/erlosrequiem · 1 pointr/audiorepair

I can't think why you'd be getting a humming due to the headphones having a 4 pole connector; it's supposed to be designed so that if something can't use the mic it's just bypassed. more likely that you're getting a hum due to the tv having a not-great DAC (digital to audio converter). Any 3.5mm male to female extension should work fine, and you shouldn't need to worry about it being 4 pole on either end.

What you're needing

u/AA_James · 1 pointr/audio

Hey Op, James from Antlion Audio here, sounds like you may have some environmental EMI that is causing some issues. I would suggest a better shielded extension cable such as https://www.amazon.com/UGREEN-Extension-Adapter-Compatible-Smartphones/dp/B00LM4ON3I/. One of the issues we had with the ModMic 5 is with all those 3.5mm connections it really opened it up for EMI. Drop me DM if you have any questions or need a bit more help.

I just picked up the SONY ECM-CS3 to replace my Zalman mic, and everyone says I sound much clearer now. It's also much easier to manage since the clip fits my headphone cord perfectly. Be sure to get an extension cable if you do pick this up as the cord is incredibly short.

Something like: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00LM4ON3I/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o00_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

u/ferthur · 1 pointr/Twitch

I'm not sure, it's a smaller connector that goes into the headphones, and has a small locking slot in it. You may be able to find a third party who makes replacements though.

Here is a quick result on Amazon, and from Audio Technica themselves, coiled 1.2m, straight 1.2m, and straight 3m. It should be noted, that the m50x comes with all three cables, and one screw on 1/4" adapter. AT charges $25 for the 1.2m cable and $35 for the 1.2m coiled and 3m straight.

u/arsa37 · 1 pointr/headphones

u/Ahnteis · 1 pointr/buildapc

I'm assuming you have 2 cables -- 1 for headphones, one for mic.
You'd need a long bit of shrinkwrap big enough to go around both (or just zip-tie them every few feet). Without seeing your headphones, I'll have to stick to generalities. ;)

For the extensions, you just use something like:
https://smile.amazon.com/AmazonBasics-3-5mm-Female-Stereo-Audio/dp/B01CNAUYBY/
(The mic is probably just a mono version of that).

Plug the extensions into your computer. Route the wires to front of desk. Then use something to mount the ends nicely under the front of your desk. Could just tape them together and use some nylon strapping to hold the ends in place (easy way) or could make a nice wood or other enclosure to hold them.

u/johnson_n · 1 pointr/headphones

Would this solution work? It lists the length at 1 meter (3.3 feet).

You don't need to but a new set of headphones at all, you can buy an extension like this and plug it up to the back
Or you could try something like this which would allow you to stay connected in the front. It works by removing the ground which is causing all of the static.

u/uradonkey003 · 1 pointr/techsupport

To answer your question, I really don't know, other than contacting DeepCool or searching eBay.

That said, a workaround would be to purchase a 3.5mm extension cable and run it from the headphone jack on the back of your case:

Some modern TVs have a 3.5mm headphone jack located somewhere among the ports. You could buy a 3.5mm extender cable and listen via headphones. Depending on your platform, you may be able to route the audio both your controller and your TV. Then you could listen through the headphones and down down the TV volume. You'd have to play around with your TV and console audio settings, though.

u/dragonx254 · 1 pointr/NoStupidQuestions

Question for you: That box that the red connector is for. Does it do anything for you (like do you have speakers or something hooked up)? Or are you literally just using earbuds when using the computer? Because if you're just using earbuds (like standard 3.5mm headphones or whatever) then you can likely just get an audio extension cable like this one and just plug that in where, in your video, the green connection is. And then plug your earbuds into that.

If you need one that also supports your earbud's mic, then get something like this and it'll do the same thing (The headphone icon one would go into the green port, the mic one goes into the red port).

u/HeavyMetalKoda · 1 pointr/Twitch

I honestly had the same thought go through my head, I thought is having a male+female 3.5mm hanging on the wire going to be that much lighter than the stock DT770 cable?

The answer is yes, much lighter, granted I'm using the amazon basics extension which has a really small/lightweight female end, and my 3.5mm is Amphenol KS3PC-AU which is more expensive but it's higher quality and more lightweight than the cheap alternative you buy in stores so I don't even notice the connection.

Even still, doing a chassis mount female connection is going to be less weight than what I did, but I definitely don't feel any weight hanging on the wire (At least with the DT770 which is what I primarily use).

Hah yep I use pretty much the exact same type of speaker for this. It's just a crosley radio (no bluetooth) with aux in, though.

So yeah I would do the Schiit stack then get a RCA to 3.5mm cable like this or this which would feed from the back of the Vali to the B2. If you're not wanting to listen to it through the speaker you can just turn off the B2, or select a different input (bluetooth?).

Alternatively, you could skip the RCA output and just use a 3.5mm male to female aux cable + 1/4in adapter out of the headphone output.. which would go to an Aux cable you leave connected to the B2. Just switch between that aux cord and your headphones out of the headphone port.

I just use the headphone output, but as I type this I remember I saw I had a RCA to 3.5mm cable last night so might switch it.

/u/sullivvn this is a great suggestion, but you'll have a small problem with it. If you're using it as a boom microphone this cable is only a few inches long. It's designed for when using the audio recorder on top of your camera.

You may have previously had a cable to connect the two together, but it won't work because the adapters are now wrong. The existing cable would be male to male. You need male to female now to use with the new line matching cable. Otherwise you'll be trying to connect two male ends together. You would connect this extension to the Zoom, then to adapter, then to the camera.

All you need is a simple AmazonBasics 3.5mm Male to Female Cable. That one is 12 feet long. They also have 25 feet available for a few dollars more if you need the extra distance.

thanks heap. so this cheap solution from amazon wouldn't work right because of 3/pole and 4/pole issue?

u/franscis · 1 pointr/Smartphones

This may be a stupid suggestion, but an adapter would open your options to those 2.5mm jacks.

5.69 usd on Amazon:
https://www.amazon.com/dp/B01GC6LR84/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_i_Tx2RCbXBH6YMK

You could get any set that way, then just leave the adapter on the headphone when you're not using it.

u/[deleted] · 1 pointr/pcmasterrace

You can always get a TRRS 3.5mm aux cable like this one and then plug it into a splitter like this one

^^I ^^just ^^randomly ^^found ^^those ^^on ^^Amazon ^^so ^^there ^^are ^^probably ^^cheaper ^^options

Does your device support 4-pole 3,5mm jacks(Headset) or only 3-pole 3,5mm jacks(Headphone only/Microphone only)? You might want to get something like this.

I'm not sure how the sound quality will be, but it should work. I found a few cheaper alternatives if you have prime. The second one should be plug and play with your headset.

I had one of these: First the volume knob started to wobble, and it would make cracks and pops through both input and output anytime I'd use it. Then the wire started to come apart internally after about a year, i.e. the warranty period. Happened much sooner for a friend of mine.

The design is brilliant, but I can't personally recommend them. I'd be more inclined to suggest something from Lovinstar, Sukira, or KetDirect, but they all have problems too.

u/hazi59 · 1 pointr/headphones

VModa boom pro has a 3.5mm connection, so unless you mod your Sennheiser, they won't work. Sennheiser uses 2.5mm, vice 3.5mm. But, there is a VModa boompro like option...

Hi there! I posted this late last night in yesterday’s tech help thread, but it obviously wasn’t the ideal time, so I didn’t get a reply.

I’m currently considering building a gaming PC, and I plan on getting the Massdrop x Sennheiser PC37X headset. However, I’m not sure how long down the road I’ll have my build ready, and I’d like to have the headset for console gaming in the meantime. But, one problem: the Dualshock 4 doesn’t natively support the PC37X, seeing as the headset has a dual cable form. So, I’m thinking of pulling the trigger on the headset now, as I plan on using it down the road anyway, and buying a cheap $5-$10 audio splitter to connect it to my PS4 controller. One question given that context:

u/FairyTrainerLaura · 1 pointr/NintendoSwitch

>I have also used a Headphone splitter like this (
>
>https://www.amazon.com/Headphone-Splitter-Syncwire-Nylon-Braided-Smartphones/dp/B07431YDWM
>
>) along with the Male-Male 3.5mm cable to essentially create a "two input - one output" adapter so that I can plug both my phone and Switch into my headphones at once while not at my PC (so I can listen to podcasts while playing).

You can use those in reverse?

u/plotney · 1 pointr/techsupport

This would be my first choice

u/Lochos · 1 pointr/audio

Like this ? Link I would just need to get two of the links you sent me.

u/mashina55 · 1 pointr/synthesizers

Edit: yea, I think the tempo is a CV for tempo change.

Oh, that moved something! I got the Crave to trigger PO, the tempo is working and in sync. Routing from Crave Gate to the PO input, sync mode SY2.

But now it triggers the sequence on my PO, the Crave Sound is not getting through if I connect headphones to the PO output. If I connect headphones to Crave Phones out, I hear the synth and PO is nicely playing in sync but I'm not hearing through the headphones, just on the side.

I tried switching different SY modes on my PO but still not getting the Crave audio.

I connected the "Gate" on Crave to PO input, tried changing the clock options in the "Behringer Synth" software that came with it but didn't budge.

I feel like this routing is almooost there...
Would you suggest a 3.5 mm splitter - something like this? https://www.amazon.com/Headphone-Splitter-Syncwire-Nylon-Braided-Stereo/dp/B07431YDWM/ref=sr_1_3?crid=2J4PIR0PMQJ83&keywords=3.5+mm+splitter&qid=1573677122&sprefix=3.5+mm+spl%2Caps%2C247&sr=8-3

If we get this to work, feels like a youtube worthy tutorial for other beginners with similar setup :)

u/G-wow · 1 pointr/oneplus

Wrong sub to be asking about ps4 since this is for the oneplus devices.

Anyways, here's the usb splitter you're looking for. https://www.amazon.com/Headphone-Splitter-Syncwire-Nylon-Braided-Stereo/dp/B07431YDWM/ref=sr_1_4?keywords=3.5mm+splitter&qid=1573437661&sr=8-4

u/Gordo_51 · 1 pointr/techsupport

ok so this is how (most, if not all) motherboard audio cards work.
for most lower end/lower budget oriented boards, there are 3 jacks:sub, audio out and mic in.
higher end boards like my x470 aorus ultra have 5 jacks. i think its audio in, audio out, sub, mic in, and mic out. there is also an optical port. the headphones (from what i can tell) that you are using have one connector. depending on what you plug it into you will get either mic in or audio out. so you would have to get a splitter to use both the mic and audio port. like this one.

u/BC_Hawke · 1 pointr/DayZmod

No problem. Windows will treat is as a separate audio device which may be different if you have windows set up to allow sound through your default device and speakers at the same time. You could get a splitter if you need to plug your speakers and headset into the USB device to get sound at the same time.

u/benolry · 1 pointr/astrophotography

Star eater is a non issue for my optics as well as my seeing. It would only occur if a star would be 1px in size and lands on a green bayer position.

I use the lacerta mgen built in exposure trigger via a snap 3.5mm to sony multiport adapter and set the camera to bulb exposure (which cuts the effective bit depth to 12bit). The A7rII is a fantastic general purpose camera but it doesn‘t shine when it comes to astrophotography. Cs :)

EDIT: I use a splitter to trigger 2 cameras at the same time if I record narrowband at the same time :

https://www.amazon.de/gp/product/B07431YDWM/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o02_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

Budget: $50 (Amazon only)

Source: Moto Z

Type of Headphone: IEM. Already Bluetooth or can be converted.

Music: Most everything. I listen to a lot. I do like bass though.

What I need are some Bluetooth IEMs. I have some already picked out but figured I'd ask here to help narrow it down. Here is what I have so far:

Already Bluetooth

  • soundPEATS Q12

  • Anker Curve

  • TaoTronics BH16

    Can be converted

  • KZ ZST

  • KZ ZS3

  • KZ ZS5

  • Tannmak Pro

Would be converted with one of these cable, although I don't know which is best

  • KZ Cable

  • Braided Cable

  • Sport Cable

I guess overall my questions are:

Should I go with some that are already Bluetooth, or some iems that I can swap out the cable for a Bluetooth one?

If I go for one where I can convert it, which should I choose? I like good all around sound quality with an emphasis on bass that is clear but you can feel.

Which Bluetooth cable do I choose? There's about 3 different ones and they are all different.
u/p_pal2000 · 1 pointr/HeadphoneAdvice

KZ ES4 has detachable cables. You can buy a separate "2-pin" Bluetooth cable and there you have it, an iem that can do wired and wireless.

Edit: here's a cable that will work:

So I'm in the same boat as you - plan on buying the next oneplus model, looking for new bluetooth buds/iems. Keep in mind, I'm not sure if these are available where you are, but it was suggested to me to look at TIN Audio T2 which come with a detachable cable, and also pick up the TRN BT3 bluetooth cable to use with them. That might be stretching your budget, but that's one of the options I'm looking at. Also considering the Aukey Latitude set and Shure SE112 (on the very tip top of my budget). Not sure how much I like the "collar" on the TRN BT3.

Just not sure where to land, so I'll be following this thread hoping to get some ideas myself!

Oh okay.

Or if you prefer black, like the one that came with your SE 215: https://www.amazon.com/Upgrade-Replacement-Detachable-Earphone-MAGAOSI/dp/B07F1JRKTC/

The quality is fine. I actually found that the cable that came with my SE215 has significantly more crosstalk (audibly so) then any aftermarket cable I've tried. I know people say cables don't really matter, but I say quality control does and cables can have defects such as this, whether it's through poor assembly or faulty winding or whatever.

u/CommunistOrc · 1 pointr/headphones

I suspect the wire that comes with the ZS7 is not the wire I'm talking about then. This is the cable I purchased for my T2s, and it's fantastic, and looks basically identical to the kinboofi one. Probably same manufacturer.

u/Oakbing · 1 pointr/AVexchange

The cables are gonna be the same at the $25 range. Your best bet is to get a copper mmcx cable from Amazon, like this one, $20, from Amazon. Chinese yes, but it's going to sound the same as your other stock cables at this price range anyway. I've bought one of these before and they're fine and sounds pretty much the same as the stock cables I had.

u/Prospero424 · 1 pointr/headphones

The stock cables are still way too stiff (and a little too short), but they do not have 90-degree connectors on the v3. Either way, $23 on Amazon and problem solved.

u/heartcall · 0 pointsr/Vive

Sennheisers are a very solid choice. I'm going to use my Senn HD 598s with my headset. You'll need to get a short cable with a 1/8" jack, though. The 518s only come with a 10' long cable with a 1/4" jack, and 1/4" to 1/8" adapters are enormous.

Hello! I am using the senny 598's with a magni/modi combo, I want a replacement cord so I don't have to use the original one. I was gonna buy this one but I read in the reviews (and saw for myself) that it has 2 rings on the small connector instead of the original one that has 3 rings. Will that make a difference that is I will notice? Thanks <3
