I have this one and it resulted in the FUNNIEST damned thing happening. I live in a town that is just over 10k people. We have a mind boggling number of churches. And so there are a lot of religious door knockers.
One day, I had 2 ladies who were obvious church ladies (by the way they dressed and they were holding bibles) come up on my porch, read the sign, and turn and walk away. I was alerted to their presence by my dogs. And so I looked out the window in time to see one of the women gesticulating wildly with an obviously disgruntled look on her face. Priceless.

When I was very young, my dad had cancer. (No worries, he's still around!) He went in for radiation as an outpatient. One day after treatment, he was moved to a different section of the hospital to be monitored for a day. He had trouble finding nurses and needed to speak to someone. So, he got out of bed and walked down the hall and saw a group of nurses giggling in the hallway.
As it turns out, my dad was on the same floor as Mario Lemieux, and since we lived in Pittsburgh, this was a huge, ginormous deal. Mario felt so bad that my dad couldn't find a nurse when he heard about it, that he had tickets to a Penguins game left for our family! My dad says it was worth it. hehe!
Many years later, my little sister was diagnosed with cancer. (Again, no worries. She's fine!) She was nominated for a Make-a-Wish wish (she met U2, totally another story!) and was really involved with helping them explain cancer to the younger children in the wing. MaW does a lot more than just grant wishes. They do little things like hand out CDs and take kids on small road trips. One such trip was to go to meet the Pittsburgh Penguins at the Mellon Arena. Lemieux was there and we all got pictures with him before a game. My sister told him the story about my Dad, and while he didn't remember the specifics, admitted that sounded like something he'd do. haha.

Are you talking about the "POLICE [PUBLIC CALL] BOX" sign above the doors, or the "Police Telephone Free for Use of Public" on the door itself?
With the latter, in recent years it actually looks like the black lettering is in positive relief on the white panel, which is translucent material that can be backlit. If I wanted to do this and had the resources, I'd use some sort of white translucent acrylic panel, 3D print the black letters individually, and carefully set them onto the panel.
In previous incarnations, of course, it was a lot simpler, probably just paint, and that may be all you need to get the point across. I have one of those printed tin replicas of that sign, and it could probably pass as the "real thing" if I had a TARDIS replica to put it on.

You could probably DIY your own solution with some addressable LED strip lights, wooden frame, and cloth for a fraction of the price. That said, it'd be a lot of effort, and would be a bit tricky to get a convenient control solution working. (Though you could probably rig something up with a pre-built Wi-Fi controller and HomeAssistant.)
I mean I think it definitely attacks working conditions and polices in America but it is a joke sign you can buy on Amazon
