I have personally caught a crow in one of these.
You just put some food in the back, the animal steps on the release and you're in business.

That's true. So as a lightweight and simple alternative here are some premade snares you just set tie to an anchor point and stand. 12 of these should be the same weight as 3 mouse traps but can be adjusted for rabbits, racoons, and other animals.

The basics of a snare is a piece of cord, a loop, a knot that let's the loop slid and close freely, and a place to tie the snare to. You can to fancy lifting mechanisms but for the most part it should work without them.

I'm totally down with yout catnip colony! Do it!

BUT please, please, please get the kitties fixed. There will be unintended consequences if you don't also invest in fixing them. Aside from improving their quality of life significantly, large populations of feral cats will decimate the small wildlife animal population.

I purchased 3 of these off amazon: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B013RKRE4Y/ to help me care for the colony in my neighborhood. There were so many cats it was super inconvenient to keep borrowing one at a time IF they were not already checked out. These are inexpensive and I was able to take 3 at a time for be fixed.

Good luck! You are an amazing person to come up with such a fun and sweet thing to do for the kitties.

I started with some of the cheaper pushers but ended up sticking with the Glock-specific MGW and it works really well.

Bear in mind that you may still need to fit the rear sight... I have had some that install right out of the package (Ameriglo, XS) and others (Night Fision, Dawson) that required fitting before a pusher could install them. It is not something you want to force - you could break the dovetail or warp the sight.

OP, I'm kind of confused because it seems painfully obvious to me that you are already aware of what you are going to use for doing this which is essentially anything in .22... duh.

I feel your pain when it comes to dealing with animal control because where I am at, they're not going to help you and they will tell you as much to your face. Where I live they will roll their eyes and say they are not coming out for a cat and in my experience, they are slow to respond to a dog unless it is really threatening and even then if the dog is at risk of injury by them chasing it... they will then leave the area and you have to call them back when you have the dog in your possession. So... you don't have to tell me that animal control is unhelpful.

The only thing I can offer is that some people are unaware of how easy it is to get a hold of live traps. Most people I approached about the problems with pests I have told me to put out poison which I was not about to do or call animal control which I did and got nowhere... then I gave up it never even occurring to me that I could just buy a mess of live traps because that is a thing. I found one at a Goodwill and then it occurred to me that people have live traps so... it must be possible to buy live traps. Hopefully, you give some thought to picking up some live traps and then culling the colony by taking in the animals to animal control where they will be at least marginally more helpful (in my experience).
