I think it was a type of earplug. Looks like a square of cotton he twisted up and stuck in his ears.

Something like this: https://www.amazon.com/Macks-Shooters-Earplugs-Wallet-Roll-ups/dp/B0067PG5QA

Yeah, the theaters around me tend to crank the volume to 11-13 on the Tufnel scale, so I've been wearing earplugs to movies for years.

I find that these work very well for that purpose.

u/OmniaMors · 10 pointsr/liberalgunowners

>muzzle-braked AR

you broke a vase when you knock it over, you brake a car and gun when you slow its movement.

>we all watched him hit himself in the face with his buffer tube like he didn't quite know how to shoot it normal.

Sounds more like a tactical timmy that has no idea about form and function of guns. Probably couldnt hit the broadside of a barn at 10 ft.

>am I wrong that that's an obnoxious thing to do?

This is entirely subjective, there is no objective right answer. For me? Yeah, youre wrong. The dude bought and paid for range time like anyone else. If he is not breaking the rules, or endangering anyone, he is fine. I get you may not like what he is doing, but that doesnt make him an asshole, its just part of the quirks of an indoor range.

If anyone is to blame, it should be the range for either, allowing guns they shouldnt, or not having enough wall between stalls. But even thats a stretch for me. Like i said, its the nature of the beast with indoor ranges.

If you are looking to double up, may I reccomend Decibullz? I RSO, so doubling up is an absolute must for me, and these have works really well. My only tip, is when moulding them, hold your jaw about 3/4" open. It widens your ear canal a bit, so when it sets, and you close your mouth, it has a better seal.

>Are the 250+ dollar ones worth it to a casual shooter?

I am not a casual shooter and they aren't even worth it to me.

Howard Leight Impact Pro is what I use most of the time.

If I'm at an indoor range then I'll double up using In Ear Plugs under my muffs.

The Howard Leights can make cheek welds a bit weird, generally, this doesn't affect me much but if I'm doing some bench shooting and I need to hold a great weld for a long time then I'll just use my in earplugs and forgo any muffs.

99% of the time though I use the muffs.

Also, if your muffs don't have gel cups - get some. They make a HUGE difference and are 500% worth the $30-50 you'll spend. Currently I'm using Noisefighter's Sightlines - these have a shelf cut for glasses. Very happy with them.

u/2capp · 7 pointsr/motorcycles

I use these: http://www.amazon.com/Surefire-Sonic-Defender-1-Pair-Medium/dp/B004K9NXJW

I tried Alpine Motosafe but they were crap; barely blocked anything, didn't seal right, pain in the ass to get in/out. Surefires are 1/3 the cost, block just the right amount, and are super comfy. Never leave home without them.

u/Ramv36 · 5 pointsr/videos

Modern ear plugs can work just as well or even better than large muffs/cans.

I use Surefire EP4s on the range, and even my Ar-15 is attenuated to a safe and comfortable level, and they're very unobtrusive.
Would recommend.

Here's some of the things that are good to have on hand. A lot of it is newer since I'm replacing things I did not care for. Most, if not all, can be found on Amazon. Its a little list but hardly scratches the surface of crap that you can accumulate.

For shooting:

  • Eye pro - Best to have a case and alternate lenses are nice for indoor and outdoor range time. The most basic of eyewear will run you $20+ at ranges so get it ahead of time.

  • Indoor ear pro - Same as eye pro... These ran me $35+tax when I decided to double up on my outdoor ear pro at the range. Plenty comfortable!

  • Outdoor ear pro - Muffs can be hot outside, especially in the middle of summer, but luckily you often won't need to same level of protection. It can also be nice if your muffs get in the way of a good cheek weld on a stock. I've tried regular ear plugs and the Surefire plugs but nothing beats something form-fitted to your ear especially for marathon shooting events. Couple with muffs for more protection. These are still pretty new to me but I'm happy with them so far. Easy to form and make a noticeable after a while.

  • Targets - Splatter targets are amazing when youre working on marksmanship. You can easily see your hits from a distance and the contrast makes it easier for spotters to see your latest shot if you're looking through glass. These will also run you a significant premium if you buy at the range. Splatterburst targets are cheaper than Dirty Bird and, IMHO, more visible in indoor (darker) ranges. They're a great size up close for handguns and out to 70-100 yards for rifles. For plinking, just get the cheapest paper targets the range offers. You likely won't see your hits from a distance but, at that point, you probably don't really care.

    Cleaning:

  • Some good solvent - You can spend a long time scraping carbon. Good solvent will let you wipe it off with a rag. Breakfree CLP, in my experience, leads to more of the former.

  • Some lubricant - Opinions vary from person to person. I used to use Breakfree CLP as a lubricant all the time but there were certain sources indicating that it, like Frog-lube, is less than ideal in different ways. Slip won out among the bunches but I honestly couldn't tell you why. It was something regarding organic/synthetic compositions and temperatures coupled with anecdotal shit. Good one to Google if you're interested.

  • Some brushes - Good for detail cleaning that a rag wont handle. White brush is also fantastic for clearing crap out of the seams of an XBox controller.

  • Cleaning kit - I don't use it as much since I tried boresnakes but there are some good tools in here. Its compact since you use a cable to pull brushes but that means its no good for clearing jams. I'd get it again if I felt I needed a full kit but, again, I rarely use it.

  • Boresnakes - I remember people hating these (again, don't remember why) so I ignored them for the longest time. They're compact and make cleaning your barrel a breeze... Epic-ly better than running a small patch down your barrel. Almost entirely replaced my cleaning kit for most post-range cleaning. They have a small wire brush portion which you can floss back and forth with shorter barrels, too. Coupled with a good solvent, these fucking rock.

  • Nylon brushes - If you end up needing to run brushes down your barrel, it's probably good to not scratch the shit out of it. This was an impulsive buy but I don't regret giving Otis another $9 for their awesome products.

    Everything else:

  • Thread locker - If you get a collection going, there's a good chance you'll be playing with screws quite a bit. Lock down scope rings, set screws on sights, etc.

  • Anti-Seize - Completely necessary if you have multiple chokes for a shotgun and/or ever intend to use them.

I've heard of a few people using plugfones as an all-in-one solution. No personal experience

Honestly, I think bluetooth speakers and a set of actual ear plugs is your best bet. I know Sena/Cardo can get a bit expensive, but they'll last you. Plugfones or any other combination will eventually wear out/get hard. It's damn near impossible to make any earplug that will last months let alone years

If you get speakers, I'm a big fan of these for both saving your ears and letting you hear the music

u/Golden-Fox · 4 pointsr/motorcycles

I wear a full head helmet and my bike isn't too loud, so I've never found earplugs necessary. But my pro tip from the shooting world is that you can use earplugs like these to filter out high decibel noise while still being able to hear lower decibel noise. In my case, I wore those inside electronic earmuffs so I could still hear people talking. Applying it to motorcycles, you could wear them inside a helmet with bluetooth to still hear your music or coms or whatever.

u/Abiogeneralization · 3 pointsr/Parenting

For sure - It's frustrating that a father's legitimate depression is taken less seriously because it doesn't have the same cause as motherhood depression. Fatherhood depression is very real, and very different from just being stressed. Ideally, we would define and treat mental health issues with more accuracy.

As for real support for OP - Of course, my first recommendation is to find a therapist you click with, ideally one trained in cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT). As for quick ideas that may help, I've heard many parents of loud babies swear by electronic ear protection. A baby's cry can reach 130 decibels, enough to permanently damage human hearing! Electronic ear protection works by recording the sounds around you, then playing them into your ear at a safe volume in real time. They're meant for hunters, shooters, and people who work around loud equipment who still want to be able to hear things going on around them. They come as ear muffs or the more expensive ear buds. You'll still be able to hear your wife talking or baby crying, but at a volume that doesn't tell your brain to run away from the situation and enter fight or flight.

Those earplugs are great, but I kept losing one of the pair because they are so small. Now, I use these:
https://www.amazon.com/Decibullz-Earplugs-Comfortable-Protection-Shooting/dp/B00WIXL6IM/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1481139563&sr=8-1&keywords=decibullz

If you ignore the...terrible name, they're effectively Etymotics but with moldible surroundings that hold them in the right place in your ear, while also making them larger so that it's harder to lose them. More comfortable and consistent, in my opinion. If you wind up having the problems I wound up having, these might help you out.

u/tripreed · 2 pointsr/Shotguns

I use these SureFire ones https://www.amazon.com/SureFire-Defenders-Filtered-Earplugs-Reusable/dp/B011B34AUU (they actually have a couple of different models). I find them to not make everything as muffled as the disposable foam ones, but work pretty decently when shooting. Especially with the relatively low number of shots you'll be taking while upland hunting, they might be a good option for you. I would like a pair of electronic earbuds myself, though, just don't want to fork over the dough.

u/mental_chillness_ · 2 pointsr/aspergers

I really like these earplugs:
https://www.amazon.com/dp/B004K9NXJW/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_i_sadzCbMSZYFNX

they equalize sound so loud sounds no longer disrupt me, I can still hear people talking etc.

I also use these noise canceling headphones:
https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00HVLUR86/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_i_mcdzCbQVYYGC9

wearing both at the same time, I am totally in my own world even somewhere noisy.

u/arcsecond · 2 pointsr/motorcycles

The foam ones are great. I found it a little disorienting at first but it didn't take long to get used to it. If you want to go a little fancier I've had good luck with these or these

Also, check your local laws. Here in California there's a specific exemption for earplugs, but that may not be the case everywhere. Not that you should let that compromise your safety.

u/ranterbach · 2 pointsr/electronicmusic

I prefer Surefire EP4s, myself. Far more comfortable.

u/Bukujutsu · 2 pointsr/aspergers

I recently bought these ear muffs and they're great, very effective, comfortable: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00NKSMPZW/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o00_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

If you combine them with these, you should have as close to silence as you're going to get: https://www.amazon.com/Decibullz-Earplugs-Comfortable-Protection-Shooting/dp/B00WIXL3T4/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1499800618&sr=8-2&keywords=custom+molded+ear+plugs

I really don't have a problem wearing them all the time around the house, except when I'm listening to something or going to sleep.

There are also these in development, which are going to be released around November, IIRC. I want to read enough reviews to make sure they're quality and worth it, though: https://www.indiegogo.com/projects/knops-the-volume-button-for-your-ears-music-design#/
They seem perfect for people with asperger's and hypersensitivity for hearing, likely a deficit in sensory gating as well.

u/fiziks07 · 2 pointsr/SkyDiving

https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00CS1A6M6/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_frkCzbG7NZE4K

Super comfortable, two levels of protection and won't come out. I got them for tunnel use but now I take them to the sky as well. I keep the plug open so I can still hear if anyone were to yell during canopy flight. Keeping the plug open probably also helps with pressure while still providing adequate protection.

For the price, I'd recommend anyone try them and see how they feel about it.

u/orbitup · 2 pointsr/guns

I used to use Howard Leight electronic ones until I forgot to pull them over my ears before firing a friend's 50 under an awning. To remove the temptation to let my sweaty ears breathe I got these.

u/randorandy54 · 2 pointsr/guns

I have the same ones and I agree, I bought them because they were really highly rated and cheaper than a lot of muffs and plugs, I have been thinking about these because my friend swears by them but 400 dollars seems hard to justify when I still take a lot of animals each year with the Howard Leights.

u/AlphaMelciados · 2 pointsr/hardofhearing

This is a real tragedy. But man, dont blame yourself. Carry on. Tell people about hearing loss and countermeasures. There are lot's of celebs with hearing loss problems...

SO don't panic, your life is not ruined. Educate others. Tell them that they should avoid noise exposure or protect their hearing.

I use Surefire EP4 plugs for shooting big bore rifles, and well, everything else. They have a 24db NRR, are foolproof to install, and VERY comfortable to wear all day (if you get the right size.) They're even available at Walmart.

Loud noise generally gives me pretty serious migraines, so I carry a pair of these everywhere I go.

u/densetsu23 · 2 pointsr/funny

I use earplugs like these when hunting and haven't had any issues. Lets you hear "normal" level sounds while taking a big edge off loud sounds.

There is a slight muffling, so if listening is particularly important in a hunt then I don't press them deeply into my ears until I'm ready to fire.

Wouldn't use them at a range without earmuffs, though.

u/Scubber · 2 pointsr/misophonia

My fiance has Misophonia. She sits at the table with me now. Growing up, her family would eat in one room and she would eat alone. I didn't enjoy that.

Things your partner can do:

  • Wear ear plugs - this by far has worked the best for us. She can still hear me talk through them.
  • Meal plan- Have your partner put together a list of food to eat for dinner during the week. You may not know all the foods that irritate him, but he does.

If this doesn't sound realistic, you can just have him make a list of foods that especially irritate him, then avoid making them. Things like Potato Chips are banned from our meal plan.

    Things you can do:

  • Play Background noise - If you don't enjoy music, maybe get a white noise app on your phone or a machine. We have a google home that we tell to play music whenever we eat.
  • Sit next to each other, not across: This way they will not see you chewing, and will irritate them less
  • Don't get upset - Possibly the most important one. They can't control their response to the stimuli. It's a neurological disorder much like autism and the best strategy to deal with it is to remain calm and react patiently. They can't control their anger but we can control our response.

    Hope that helps!

u/theantnest · 2 pointsr/audioengineering

Protip: If you're not ready to invest in proper molds (you really should), these mold them at home earplugs are the best thing I found as an interim solution.

I bought a bunch of them for our junior staff and management and they really are great, as long as you mold them properly.

You drop them in hot water to soften them up, mold them, then let them harden. If you screw it up, you can just put them in hot water again.

There is a cheaper version as well, but it has a different insert that cuts with a curved response, so isn't as good for audio, but still way better than "fits all" earplugs, or nothing.

Seriously, I'm a 40+ year old audio guy as well and I can tell you that, as I get older, I'm super happy that we have accessible analyzer tools now, because my ears certainly aren't what they used to be.

u/bizzy11 · 2 pointsr/motorcycles

I use helmet speakers and SureFire EP4 earplugs. Can't wear headphones in both ears in CA, so I opted for speakers.

Sound quality is pretty good, but obviously not as good as headphones. I'm satisfied with it though, it allows me to hear everything around me as long as the plugs are out.

I use them in a rf-1200 and they fit perfectly.

  • Get these earplugs, or the titanium ones for 69 They seriously work better than my foam plugs (the 33nrr Howard Leight), which I did not actually expect. Seriously, they do. And yes, I was inserting the foamies correctly.

I swear by the surefire 5's on amazon. They come in three sizes so you might have to experiment by getting a set or two or three. They're fantastic and cut down my exhaust/wind noise quite a bit to almost no noise.

Then again.. I stuff them in there like I'm a prison escapee with his first date.

I'm not familiar with Play-doh like plugs, but I did go down this route for custom molded plugs. They work well for knocking down wind noise, yet I can still hear engine revs and whatever the Sena is playing.

u/TheBeneGesseritWitch · 1 pointr/newtothenavy

Or we stick them in our top button hole of our covvies.

I'm pretty retentive about mine, I dislike the disposable foamy ones, but every space where you will encounter loud noises is supposed to have warning placards and a box of disposable hearing pro at the entrance. When you check onboard you will be entered in the ship's hearing conservation program and be required to get annual hearing exams and be issued your own hearing pro.

I personally bought some nicer ones that filter certain decibel ranges--usually a local gun range will carry them, or Amazon--so I could hear people talking and still filter out the loud roar of the machinery or sonar.

Edit these ones

I suddenly feel a lot less guilty about my $400 earplugs

u/AssKoala · 1 pointr/motorcycles

I use these: http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B001V2R022/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o02_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

I also have these: http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B007FKYBP8/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o05_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

The best thing about the first set is that they have a 24dB NRR, which is plenty for my naked bike on the highway, but the little built in filter allows me to hear regular things (like having a conversation or listening to music with the Sena thingie).

I definitely go for more than a 12dB NRR. I'm considering full custom earplugs, but those work for the moment.

Plus, they double as gun range ear protection too (though I wouldn't use anything less than the 30dB for an indoor range, 24dB/26dB is fine for an outdoor range).

u/necklasbeardedwonder · 1 pointr/Music

You can get ones for about 15 bucks that mold to your ear nicely. I’ve been wearing ear plugs to concerts for years and I’ve never lost them moshing. Here’s a link and they come in small/medium /large ear plugs

u/killyouintheface · 1 pointr/Metal

I recently got these as an upgrade from the squishy rubber plugs my wife and I have been using for both shooting and concerts for a long time, and I'm super impressed with both the volume reduction and the fidelity.

Wore them for the first time at a Crowbar show a couple weeks back, and they were great. Everything was crystal clear.

u/matthew_ditul · 1 pointr/guns

If hearing protection is your highest priority, you need to be looking at the Noise Reduction Rating (NRR). This will be listed on the packaging/informational section (if online). The higher NRR, the better.

Electronic pro, specifically the Howard Leight's, are very popular because you can adjust the noise level to block out gunshots but still hear other sounds. You'll see these recommended everywhere. I own a pair, at pistol competitions, EVERYONE uses them. The downside is that the Howard Leights don't have a super high NRR (NRR: 22)

I also use these Fnova brand earmuffs, which have a NRR of 34. Because there's no electronic amplification, they're much, much cheaper.

For earplugs, I use Decibullz custom molded plugs, which have a NRR of 31.

What I've learned from shooting pistol competitions, especially when shooting around barrels/barricades or indoors, is that the ubiquitous Howard Leights are not sufficient. I double up with the Decibulls and Fnova for maximum hearing protection.

My suggestion is that, unless you really want the electronic amplification, you can buy the Fnova and Decibulls for the same price as one pair of Howard Leights.

u/mvcase9 · 1 pointr/paradisofestival

I always recommend Decibullz. I've been using them for a year now and they are a life saver. The best part is that they are custom molded. I have a big problem with earplugs staying tight and comfortable in my ear, so decibullz really help with that. I also recommend buying the lanyard to connect the two plugs together to avoid losing them!

I like Decibullz. 25 bucks from Amazon for a really high level of protection (says 31dB). They work kind of like a mouthguard, where you put them in hot water and then press them into your ear and leave them there for a few minutes to harden. Mine are super comfortable, I've tried a lot of brands and find myself fucking around with them constantly, where the Decibullz I can put in and they stay in place perfectly.

I would suggest trying some things like art to see if with words out of the way, he can express himself. Music has always been good for me because of this. When I'm really in a bad spot, I can only listen, not play an instrument. However, even then, the songs I choose say something about my emotional state and thoughts, which then helps me organize them for communication.

Another consideration is that he may have some sort of health issue that is bothering him and making it hard to concentrate enough to put his thoughts into words, AAC symbols, or signs. You guys may have already addressed that, though.

As for hearing protection, I can only wear these in public. Shooting muffs feel like people are staring at me, which is bad for social anxiety. Other earplugs are uncomfortable, which is bad for sensory issues.

If you want to message me about being autistic and things I wish my parents had known, feel free.

This (33 NRR) over top of these (19 NRR) is some of the best hearing protection you can buy. When you double up, take the highest NRR and add about 5, and that's your total NRR. As an extreme example, a 308 with a muzzle brake will be about 160 dB, and you want to get it down as close to 120 as possible.

Passive hearing protection is substantially cheaper. But electronic protection will amplify "safe" sounds. Here is the passive version of those Pro Ears.

I have a couple pairs of Howard Leight electronic ear muffs. They work well, but they may interfere with your cheek weld a bit. They make electronic ear plugs. One of my friends has a custom made set from a hearing doctor, but you can pick up non-custom ones for less than $300 here in the US. I've never used them.

Here's an example:

After looking around a bit, I'm buying a pair of these to try to use for sleeping: https://smile.amazon.com/dp/B00WIXL46Q?psc=1

I thankfully saved up a bit and got some custom earplugs. They are fantastic, would recommend them if you can afford to spend a little. Pretty invisible, fit snug, and I can hear everything perfectly in the club/gig.

If you can't spend too much, I would strongly recommend "Isolate Earplugs" and you can also buy them on Amazon.

I've had luck with these Decibullz, they mold to your ears so they're pretty comfortable.

Edit: they also have a headphone version if you want to listen to music.

It’s been shown that foam earplugs don’t block near enough sound and in my opinion the way they expand is really uncomfortable and causes my tinnitus to flare up after I use them. I absolutely love my surefire plugs. They seem expensive but I’ve had the same pair for 5 years now.

I pretty much always wear electronic ear pro over them even when shooting outdoors.

I guess that's kind of my point. Any earplug with a 32db rating is is what I use. I'm most interested in protecting my hearing and don't care if they show. I've used

Those were my very first pair! I used them for Coachella 2015. I switched to dubs in 2016 but sadly they didn't fit me all that well since I have small ears. I now have Decibullz Custom Molded Earplugs and love them. I still pack my olds just incase as backups but honestly the next step up are $200 injected molds. A few in my group have them and swear by them but they also hit a ton more festivals then I do. But maybe some day I'll buy them just not right now.

Nope, not those.

These ones: https://www.amazon.com/3M-92059-80025T-Disposable-Earplugs-80-Pair/dp/B000I7LH8Y

Gonna order some, haven't seen in a store.

Surefire Sonic Defenders. Made for shooting. Fit entirely inside the ear. Comfortable as hell. I'm a side sleeper. I've slept in them (while wearing a tactical radio which they are also compatible with).

These earplugs are a hard plastic that can be custom molded to your inner ear for a more secure fit: https://www.amazon.com/Decibullz-Earplugs-Comfortable-Protection-Shooting/dp/B00WIXL46Q/ref=sr_1_2_sspa?ie=UTF8&qid=1519794980&sr=8-2-spons&keywords=decibullz&psc=1

I've used them for several months now with no issues.

A simple fix is also twisting the cheap styrofoam plugs into narrow cylinders before inserting them into your ear canals.
