This one works great with my e60 install. Tried with two units, 2gb and 4gb ram.

I wanted to upgrade my stock head unit to something a little more flashy and customizable. This joying head unit was the right price point and had many of the features that I was looking for.

Product link: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B01M670UWI/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o01_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

Pros:

  • Full android with wifi tethering capabilities. This works great with my phone because I have unlimited data. I have tasker auto turn on tethering when my device connects via BT to the head unit.

  • Great Screen with full Android app capability.
  • Quick and responsive
  • NFC compatibility (tap to connect)

    Cons

  • Amp = Meh
  • stock BT app = meh
  • non-standard size. I had to dremmel out the faceplate.

It seems the company sells multiple models at different prices. Do we know which are compatible with certain models of car?

It seems this other model requires android installed in the unit?

I just ordered this last night after trying to decide in the last couple of weeks. I have the exact same car as you by the way. I hate that tiny screen.

It arrives this Saturday but I probably won't be doing the install until next weekend.

ATOTO A6: $250 on Amazon. Look for the Toyota specific unit (205mm x 104mm). Fits the factory mounts without having to buy a cheap install unit to fill the side gaps, plugs directly in, works with steering controls, Bluetooth, WiFi, GPS, has an Apple car play module, multiple USB ports, AUX input, two video inputs, micro SD slot, AirPlay, preamp outputs, etc. It has a few quarks, and you’ll need to do your research to make sure you’re buying the right size, but hard to beat the functions and price point.

The information missing from the thread linked above is that the dongle mentioned is something like the Carlinkit dongle (there are other dongles, and other places to shop for them): https://www.amazon.co.uk/Carlinkit-Wireless-Navigation-Function-Bluetooth-Android-Car-Radio-black/dp/B07S1M8C34/

Also, be aware that you need to figure out how the RPi should power on and off, to not corrupt the sd card.

There are aftermarket radio head units that have android built right in.

There is this Tesla inspired radio - Here

Also, there is a radio that looks closer to stock - Here

You could probably find much better prices than on Amazon, but at least you can see the styles of radio they make for our car. If you scroll through the months/years of posts on this subreddit, it seems there have been a few Cruze owners who have installed the large screen tesla radio with success, so it seems like a promising option.

To get internet on these radios so you can install apps, you need to just turn on the Hotspot feature on your smartphone and connect to the phone via WiFi.

It was extremely easy. I used this wiring diagram: http://s222.photobucket.com/user/HOTTTiEBOi7/media/g35_pacoem2_to_jvs_kw-avx820_zps17433e60.jpg.html
I had to splice some wires, but everything was plug and play from there. I wouldn't recommend the headunit/adapter combo I got because I had to sand down the adapter a bit to fit it over the head unit.

I just had this installed a couple days ago: JOYING Quad Core Android 4.4.4 stereo https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00YE7SN9K/ref=cm_sw_r_awd_lDK7wbXY4JM8Q

Can't believe how good it is, works just like a tablet or your smartphone! Being a cheap Chinese brand, I took the risk not knowing what to expect and it completely blew me away. Way better than those pioneer or Kenwood ones that go for twice as much. Not to mention it just looks cooler too, Netflix, YouTube, has everything you need and whatever more you want from the app store. I'll be posting some pics and maybe a review of it soon because I luv this thing so damn much! I even connect my ps3/ps4 controller to it, used an emulator to get old school Nintendo games and play video games on it lol.

u/long_meats · 2 pointsr/civic

I recommend getting the aftermarket head unit first before the subwoofer/amp so you can skip needing a Line-Out Converter.

Tweeters can be installed easily if you order the factory tweeter trim pieces from one of the higher trims. The ones I ordered from this site actually came with factory tweeters already pre-installed in the trim pieces, but you'll need some wiring adapters to connect them to the door speakers.

The parts should be listed as something like this depending on your model:

Garnish Assembly, R Door Mirror XXXXXX (Tweeter) (Deep Black)

Garnish Assembly, L Door Mirror XXXXXX (Tweeter) (Deep Black)

u/fangorn0 · 2 pointsr/nissanfrontier

I just installed the Atoto A6 Pro. It is an Android head unit that will easily connect to the bluetooth OBDII scanner and came with Torque Pro pre-installed. It doesn't have Android Auto or Apple Carplay built in, but there is an adapter that just plugs into a USB port on the head unit to provide this connection. Without the adapter, the head unit is essentially an Android tablet. Sometimes I use Android Auto, and sometimes I just use my phone as a hotspot to allow the head unit to connect to the internet on its own.

That adapter is currently unavailable on Amazon, but there are other adapters on there, like this one.

Does yours say "General Motors" on your Bluetooth menu on your phone? Passcode should be simple like 0000 or 1234 IIRC. If not, then you might have to hit the green button and say "Pairing" and it might spit out a code, I can't remember. I'm pairing mine with my LG V10 and it works fine for phone, just no music. I didn't think they changed much between the '07 and '09 models. My handsfree works really well in my Saab except for the fact that when I pick up I usually have to wait a second for it to connect, so I hit the green button then wait a second then talk.

I've really been considering updating my head unit to a Joying chinesium thingamajig. If I do I'll probably post on here to ask about adapters and shit because I have no idea what I'm doing. I'm happy with the rest of my '09 but I'd really like A2DP for bluetooth music from my phone.

EDIT: If it would help, I can de-pair my phone and record a video of me pairing it up again, just let me know.

EDIT2: Just did it, you gotta go thru your bluetooth menu and do what I did, it wouldn't let me record and pair at the same time but hopefully the video gives you the gist of it. Apparently the owner before me had an iPhone so I had to clear that out. It will give you the code to connect on your phone, hopefully.

AA, AC and ML all run the apps inside the phone and display it to the headunit. This eases standardization so the HU makers don't need to invest in the powerful chips you find in a smartphone. They only need to accept an AV signal from the phone and return touch and voice inputs.

AA and AC units differ from the HUs that come baked in with a full-version of Android. Those don't need phones to run Android apps but depend on either a separate data SIM or a Wi-Fi hotspot.

That exact stereo (which I have) is priced at your link $90 more than where I bought it from: https://smile.amazon.com/Quadcore-1024x768-Navigation-Chevrolet-2009-2014/dp/B0784BPXT1/ref=sr_1_3?keywords=cruze+tesla+style+stereo&qid=1569768977&s=gateway&sr=8-3

The AVIC-W8400NEX is released. Crutchfield and Amazon have it.

Unfortunately, Pioneer confirmed that this is WVGA (800 x 480). I love the idea of wireless AA and wireless CarPlay, but I hate that there are better specs out there at $1200. Pretty torn...

> It's slow. I mean SLOW. I saw that it only had 1GB of ram but I didn't really consider that that's barely anything these days. It's RAM is seriously the biggest draw back to it. It takes 20s to boot up, though the radio is instant if that was the last thing you used. Google maps works with it but you'll be halfway to your destination by the time it figures out where you are and where're going.

Wow deal break, thanks for being the guinea pig on this one. I wonder if quad core options might speed things up some, I notice the one you linked is only dual core. I have been looking around and it seems even the high end of chinese ones only come with 1GB RAM.

What do you think of this joying android 5.1 unit? It has backup cam support, quad 1.6ghz, 16GB, and a large list of other features.

How do you connect it to your phone? USB or wifi hot spot? I am getting use to just plugging my phone into the USB in my 2016 chevy work truck with android auto. It would be a bit more of a hassle to have to turn on my hotspot each time.

Can you detach the screen? It seems like it would be a target for car thieves.

Can you attach a USB stick for extra app storage?

Are there any limitations to using the unit while driving? I have noticed android auto won't let me do some stuff unless I am stopped, so kind of annoying when its the passenger operating it but I still need to stop.

Thanks again for the huge review!

u/Chris260999 · 1 pointr/CarAV

Yeah there are aptx touchscreen double dins. but they are buggy as hell. It's not on the way out, it just hasn't been implemented as it should be. People don't care much about SQ over bluetooth. The stuff I've read pretty much everywhere is that "If you want SQ, go usb".

So here's a quick story of mine. I did this double din aptx head unit research a while ago actually, I wanted a decent aptx screen head unit, since I'm an all bluetooth guy. I don't like any cables running through the cabin. Turns out there are absolutely no options other than Atoto. So I bought one (not the one I linked above, the lowest tier W3) and it was a bitch to implement. My main gripe with it was that it made the speakers reproduce a pop noise whenever I turned off/on the car, which did not happen with my previous pioneer, nor my current kenwood single din. HOWEVER, it did sound amazing, much better than my pioneer did over bluetooth, and also switching songs/ pausing the music was pretty much instant (latency is very much improved if both devices are aptx enabled). The unit turns on in a split second, and it is very fast and responsive, but the speakers popping every time I turned off the car was annoying to say the least.

Worth to mention, Atoto customer support is A++, and I'm now in the process of returning my atoto W3, and have an A6 (the one I linked) shipped to me for free. If that one works and doesn't present any issues, I'd recommend it, but in the meantime, there's really no good solution for an aptx double din screen HU. I'll probably do a little review here if the A6 behaves as I expect it to.

Hi guys, after I have used Joying universal unit: https://www.amazon.ca/dp/B01EG1ZRGU, I think you also could experience this nice radio, I LOVE it so much. Besides the HU, I also buy dash kit and harness adapter for installation, maybe you also need, hope could help you

> Wow deal break, thanks for being the guinea pig on this one. I wonder if quad core options might speed things up some, I notice the one you linked is only dual core. I have been looking around and it seems even the high end of chinese ones only come with 1GB RAM.

Perhaps, I went to Bestbuy to play with other 1GB tablets and they all work quickly for the most part and I was doing my best to tax them out with what little I had available (since nobody is signed in on google play, I couldn't download any heavier apps)

> What do you think of this joying android 5.1 unit? It has backup cam support, quad 1.6ghz, 16GB, and a large list of other features.

Looks really the same as these to me:

One

Two

Three

Four

The only true difference between them all is just the OS but again, I'm not sure if I'd even trust that given that mine is supposed to be 4.4 and can't run apps that are compatible with 4.4. Other than that, I'm not really sure what to tell you. It's still a generic Android head unit from China. Without testing it personally, I can't really say if it'll be better or worse than my experience.

> How do you connect it to your phone? USB or wifi hot spot? I am getting use to just plugging my phone into the USB in my 2016 chevy work truck with android auto. It would be a bit more of a hassle to have to turn on my hotspot each time.

Wifi hotspot and bluetooth. Both work well, the bluetooth works very well actually as I was able to hold a number of calls on it. The interface for it is a bit clunky but it works. I had to talk a little louder than I'm used to in order to drown out the road noise but nothing as terrible as some of the reviews I read on Amazon say.

> Can you detach the screen? It seems like it would be a target for car thieves.

I looked for a way but did not find any.

> Can you attach a USB stick for extra app storage?

Micro USB and it won't do you any good for apps. It's strictly for media (music, vids, pictures)

> Are there any limitations to using the unit while driving? I have noticed android auto won't let me do some stuff unless I am stopped, so kind of annoying when its the passenger operating it but I still need to stop.

Not that I found. I didn't have to bypass a Neutral safety switch or anything like I did on my previous head unit.

> Thanks again for the huge review!

Final words and overall after a weeks worth of commuting:

I'm returning it.

The deal breaker as I said before is the speed. I used google maps to plot my trip home, something I do fairly often and can do very quickly with my phone. I gave it ample time to let the GPS find itself before leaving the parking lot. Once it found it, I typed the address in for home and hit go (multiple times because I couldn't tell if it registered or not SO LAGGY!). I made it 1/3 the way home before it started giving directions (20 minutes into my hour long commute). And when it did, they were broken and stuttering (Take......Left Lane...... .....Exit on ... Left). What finally killed it for me was when I got to my exit, it didn't tell me to "take the exit on the right in TWO MILES" until AFTER I made it to the toll booth. I was severely disappointed and angry with it, therefore I'm ripping it out this weekend and it's going back. All I wanted was to find a drop in 'tablet in dash' type solution for under $250 and this certainly was not it. I have a Note 8.0 which I love, best tablet I ever owned (even though it's severely out of date now) and it's FASTER than this BRAND NEW headunit. Unacceptable IMO.

Feel free to ask any other questions between now and Saturday before I rip it out.

I thought the same thing. But then I started looking and I found this head unit that has really great reviews. and according to a coworker who used a prior version, it's a really solid piece of hardware. It supports everything I need, which is basically spotify and GPS. lol Plus the ability to install Torque and pull up the extra gauges and OBD2 codes I want for this autox build.

Get a double din head unit and install a backup camera. It will be a nice "wow" feature. I have an android head unit in my car with backup camera abilities and I love it. It makes parallel parking really easy because you're not so worried about hitting the car behind you. You will have to run two wires all the way to the back of the car and install a ground but it should not take you that long. Do not get the crappy license plate one if you can help it. Look into the ones that install like a factory one that require you to drill into the plastic above the license plate.

This is the one I have:

It's possible, but with the existing aftermarket, and the price most salvage yards ask for for OEM radio touchscreens... fuck that. Bonus, if your car is a VW, Joying and several others have OEM appearing pretty nice touchscreens.

u/pastafondler · 1 pointr/XVcrosstrek

I was wondering the same thing. I just picked up a 2014 XV recently, but found the head unit to be cumbersome, and the GPS way to slow compared to google maps. I found a few on Amazon that say they integrate, but I am not sure on the validity.

AN engineer on the Porsche Cayman forum installed this one and likes it: https://www.amazon.com/PUMPKIN-Android-Stereo-Support-Fastboot/dp/B079N9XDFT/

For this application, the HU is only a small portion of the expense and hassle. At Under $260 off Alibaba including backup cam, I figured it was worth a try. Same specs as a Samsung Galaxy S7, includes dedicated HW GPS with external antenna and external Wifi antenna for hotspots. Haven't received mine yet. But, they have a lot of presence on YouTube.

I can't tell you what works best for you but I tried the Pi way, and it was all low res monitors. I went to HUR for the higher res. I also had issues with the wifi in it, was horribly slow. Connecting via cable, ended up with my phone slowly losing a charge, even with a hub, good cables and chargers. Crankshaft seems to have stalled, it appears the latest update is from March 2019. Maybe look at OpenAuto? I could not find a good high res screen maybe there are new ones out there recently.

I'm looking for a tablet as well, the best I have found is the Lenovo I have (I ended up rooting it, but that was after I had it working with HUR for months and wanted to try a few other things with it that required root) but no ROMs for it. Or a Samsung. But honestly, I can't justify buying another tablet just to get away from a Lenovo tablet I don't like solely due to the companies practices.

As for carplay, I am not sure if this really works, but I saw it posted somewhere a couple days ago. May be worth it. It seems to get decent reviews. USB Wired Carplay AA. I *think* you could use it with the app they talk about in the description, and not need HUR for AA. But you most likely will be stuck with no charging abilities for either device.

I have this head unit in my 2006 Off Road... I don't know if I would recommend it to someone who isn't tech savvy though because there is poor support and it does require some tweaking. I was able to keep my steering wheel controls... it really made the rockford system sound great and you just can't beat the functionality (it does a lot of stuff).

u/rczrider · 1 pointr/FordFocus

I bought a kit from Spiral Audio via eBay that included the dash and basic wiring for $90. The listing isn't valid anymore, but it was like this one (which is more expensive at $129): https://www.ebay.com/itm/283558904867

Then I bought an ATOTO A6 double-DIN touchscreen running Android for $135 during Prime Day: https://amazon.com/dp/B07B3TX6MF

This solution disables steering wheel controls and while I debated spending another $130 on the iDatalink solution (Maestro RR / ADS-MRR for $100, and HRN-RR-FO2 harness for $30), I don't need to use those controls enough to justify the cost.

A quick glance at eBay doesn't show a deal like I got on the dash kit and basic wiring, so I'd probably consider the iDatalink wiring solution and a $90-100 dash kit.

Yea I am just trying to get a system that is functional. My old one gave me control over the radio, A/C, ect. but I can't use any of that anymore. I honestly don't care about the navigation aspect.

Like if I bought something like this https://www.amazon.com/XTRONS-Display-Navigator-Bluetooth-Supports/dp/B07MR3VFY6/ref=sr_1_1?keywords=honda+accord+navigation&qid=1568765826&refinements=p_72%3A2661618011&rnid=2661617011&s=gateway&sr=8-1 just trying to see if I connected this that it wouldn't pop up with "please check disc"
