Amateur Chocolatier here to answer some questions for others:

If you are interested in making chocolate this way, here is the juicer used mostly by individuals who make chocolate at home:
Champion Juicer

A commonly accepted method of removing the husk of the cocoa nib (this is called winnowing) is to use a hairdryer. You can read more about it here: Cocoa Bean Cracking Methods

There is a really serious subset of people who make chocolate at home, and if any of you have a few dollars to spare, you can do this with only a very minor investment. You can use a mortar and pestle or coffee grinder to extract the oils from the cocoa bean, also. They are very arduous tasks, but it works in a pinch.

Your list is good, however there's a few things you're likely to run into.

-------------

TL;DR: of what’s ahead

You only have so much willpower to expend in any given day, you probably can't pursue everything at once. To maximize your goal fulfillment, remember the following:

  1. Cut unnecessary drains out of your life.
  2. Figure out which goals are most important. You don’t have to pursue them all at once
  3. Figure out which goals (once reached) will make the others easier.
  4. Look for smart investments that will make your goals easier to fulfill (ie cost less willpower)

    ----------

In a nutshell, humans have a finite amount of willpower that we can expend in one day. There are only so many conscious decisions that you can make in one 24-hour period, only so many things you can force yourself to do.

And that’s fine, there is absolutely nothing wrong with that. We’re all human, that’s how we are.

Think of as being like money, where you only have a finite supply at any given time. If you suddenly start expending more on one part of your life, one of two things will happen:

  5. You'll eventually peter out. You're spending extra willpower (or money) that you don't really have, and you can only do that for so long before you go back to doing what you were before. OR
  6. You'll keep at it, but you'll find yourself dropping the ball elsewhere...you have enough willpower (or money) to go after your new pursuits, but not enough to also keep at it with your old ones.

So you might take on new fitness goals but find yourself dropping the ball on your diet goals, similar to how you might start making payments on a car only to find yourself unable to pay the electric bill. Make sense?

That's the bad news. The good news is, there's a few strategies that you can use to stretch your willpower a lot further, adapted from the financial advice world.

    ------------

    1. "If you're in a hole, stop digging."

In other words, be prepared to make significant lifestyle changes.

For example, suppose you're using all your willpower just to get through the day without punching your boss in the face. Guess what, you need a different job ASAP...as long as you stay there, you will be so sapped of willpower/energy that you'll never accomplish your other goals.

Make sense? Look for the unnecessary willpower drains that you can cut out of your life. Your friends, your church, your job, your girlfriend. All are fair game, if they're only sapping your strength.

    -------------
    2. Some goals are more important right now than others. There is nothing wrong with choosing to focus on a few and letting the others go for now.

Financial example: I have credit card debt at 20% APR, and student loan debt at 8% APR. Do I try to pursue both equally, at the same time?

Answer: no. Obviously I heavily pursue the credit card debt first, and worry about the student debt later.

Similarly, I might decide to only worry about diet and sleep for now, and take on my porn addiction and lack of fitness later.

And remember: once you've established a good habit, the amount of willpower you spend on it will be significantly less than what you spend on it right now.

For example, right now you might be spending all your willpower on eating correctly. But a year from now, it will come naturally to you...at that point, eating correctly will be so easy that it doesn’t cost you any willpower whatsoever.

Then you’re free to start pursuing your fitness goals...now you easily have enough willpower to pursue both diet and exercise, because you didn’t try to do them all at once.

    --------

    3. In addition to #2, some goals (once they’ve become second nature) will actually make it easier (ie cost less willpower) to accomplish other goals. I call them “enabling goals.”

Sleep is the best example…if you are able to get the appropriate amount of sleep every night, suddenly your other goals all become easier and cost less willpower because you’re not so damn tired all the time.

So if you can’t do all your goals at once, focus on sleep (or other enabling goals) first. You get those down, the others will follow.

    Make sense?

    ------------

    4. A smart investment up front will save money (or willpower) down the road

Financial example: you ditch the junker and spend extra money on a car that is highly reliable and gets good gas mileage, saving you mechanic’s bills and gas money down the road.

    Personal goals examples:

  7. I have a lot of nutritional supplements that I take every morning and evening. At first, I was unscrewing every bottle, every morning and evening. I was a dumbass who wasn't putting any thought into it, and surprise surprise, I was failing. I just wouldn't get around to it.

Eventually, I bought four of these weekly pill organizers on Amazon. Now, I just go and fill them up once a month (not difficult), and pop one slot open and take the supplements every morning and evening (also not difficult).

  8. I used to try to eat greens...but by the time I was done, I looked like a cow chewing its cud and my jaw was literally tired. And again, I was failing at it.

Until I went and bought a used juicer...now, I juice once a week, and getting my vegetable intake is as easy as drinking it.

  9. One of the supplements I take in the evening (per #3) is a small amount of melatonin...this in turn makes getting adequate sleep much easier, which makes all my other goals a lot easier.

You get the idea? A smart investment can mean a far smaller willpower expenditure in pursuit of your goal. Figure out what’s holding you up, and if there’s something worth investing in to make it easier.

Easier = less willpower expended = greater chance of success & more willpower for your other goals.

    ---------

Now go start fulfilling your goals, TL;DR is at the top. Questions?

This Breville is what I own. Very durable, I have never had an issue and I highly recommend it. I believe it is the top rated juicer on Amazon.

Are you looking for an emaciating style juicer where you end up tossing out a lot of pulp? I picked up this and have been happy enough with it. It sort of meets the simple construction style: auger, screen, and plunger. Omega makes a few higher priced ones that may allow greater capacity to be juiced so it moves along quicker.

Alternatively, vitamix will give you many more applications, incl. smoothies, and if you really want no pulp you can filter through cheesecloth.

u/rowinit · 8 pointsr/funny

Seriously, if you love fresh OJ buying bags of oranges is pretty cheap, and you can get a citrus juicer (like this ) for a reasonable amount.

Ta da! Fresh orange juice without the crazy price tag. Once you start though it does explain why it's so expensive. A single glass of fresh juice takes several oranges.

u/CityBarman · 7 pointsr/cocktails

It depends on your juicing volume. We use a Sunkist J1 Commercial Electric Juicer but we juice a lot; 4 bars, dining room, 3 meals/day in a hotel. The Breville CPXL is an alternative for 1/3rd the cost; though I don't have any first-hand knowledge as to longevity. If you're squeezing grapefruits and oranges, you'll want a manual press at the very least. The Hamilton Beach 932 is the industry standard but other much less expensive options exist. The 932 is faster and easier to use but may wear out faster due to its gearsets, requiring replacement parts. Considering the minimal cost, it is imperative that you keep a hand press or two around in case your primary juicer commits harakiri. Norpro and Amco both make excellent units. For less than the cost of the Norpro, you can get both Amco's orange and lemon/lime presses.

We juice daily. We also have a centrifugal juicer for pineapple and other harder fruits/vegetables. We mix 1 part fresh pineapple juice with 3 parts canned, unsweetened, not-from-concentrate pineapple juice. Except for the fancy bars primarily, few have switched to fresh pineapple juice. The good canned stuff is generally perfectly fine.

~Good luck!

Yes, I have learned this! Problem is that the plastic got pitted and would build up shit, no matter how quickly I washed it.

I ended up getting the Omega J8003. We'll see how it goes!

That is my juicer. You can't beat this quality and type of juicer for the price. Super easy to clean, too.

u/AndyManCan4 · 4 pointsr/Karma_Exchange
u/cryospam · 4 pointsr/mead

I always run to completion, but I tend to under honey the brew during primary, and then refeed the mixture with more honey during secondary.

I typically do 2 pounds per gallon of honey and 3 pounds of fruit per gallon for a melomel in primary (seems to give you something that finishes around 6-10% depending on fruit) then rack it off into secondary, adding 6 more pounds of honey, plus 3 pounds per gallon for the "top off" amount.

I use 6.5 gallon conicals for my brews, so during primary I fill to 6 gallons with 12 pounds of honey and 18 pounds of fruit that I have run through my juicer to make sure it is small enough to be drained out the bottom valve. I step feed the brew every other day for a week, and then once a week for the first month. Then I rack to secondary.

For secondary, after draining the yeast cake & settled fruit (right into my garbage disposal,) I add another 6 pounds of honey and 18 pounds of fruit. I then top it off to 6.5 gallons with a 3 lb/gallon of honey water. I also step feed the secondary every other day for a week, and then once a week for the month in secondary.

I let the mead age on the yeast/fruit leavings for another 45-60 days, then drain just enough out of the conical to have the yeast cake/fruit to not cover the side drain (not very much normally). I crush a campden tablet and toss it in, then give it another day or two to settle on the counter instead of the floor. Then I "rack" it through my Buon Vino into a bottling bucket. As soon as it finishes filtering, I bottle it normally.

With this method, I get very pronounced fruit flavor, and it normally finishes around 12-15% and semi sweet depending on the yeast. I never get any floaties due to the filtering.

If I was going for a milder ABV, I would decrease the amount of honey in primary, but I find I get substantially less burn when I do primary and secondary fermentation compared to a single fermentation that runs until the alcohol kills the yeast.

I started using my Omega Vert juicer on September 1, 2009. Since then, I have used it on a daily basis and it has operated without fail day in and day out. Based on an initial cost of $350, this represents a daily operational cost of 37 cents per day. Since Omega offers a seven year warranty, they will replace or repair the juicer at time time within seven years of purchase. At the end of this time, the daily operational cost will have dropped down to 13.6 cents. Your GE juicer had a daily cost of 71 cents. You may want to consider investing in a quality juicer if you keep up this great habit of yours.

u/rosickness12 · 4 pointsr/Juicing

I bought this a month ago and it's been good. If you make more than 30oz at a time it may not be best since pulp basket needs to be emptied after 30oz. Very easy to clean. I rinse the 3 parts and it takes less than a minute to clean. I put everything in it and it doesn't slow the motor down at all. http://www.amazon.com/Breville-BJE200XL-Fountain-700-Watt-Extractor/dp/B000MDHH06/ref=sr_1_1/182-9819861-5952403?ie=UTF8&qid=1426189324&sr=8-1&keywords=breville+700w+juicer

u/SourcererMickey · 3 pointsr/kzoo

If you don't mind doing the work, a citrus juicer can be purchased pretty cheaply.

u/GammeRJammeR · 3 pointsr/Juicing

For under $100 this is your best bet:
http://www.amazon.com/Breville-BJE200XL-Fountain-700-Watt-Extractor/dp/B000MDHH06/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1409235851&sr=8-1&keywords=juicer

But like others have said, spend a bit more and it'll pay off in the long run. I personally have an Omega NC800 that I purchased from Bed Bath and Beyond with a 20% off coupon for $263.99 & it includes a 15 year warranty. Additionally it'll produce a higher juice yield & higher quality juice on most things which saves me money on produce in the long run.

u/Agricola86 · 3 pointsr/vegan

I have this omega juicer that I got as a gift a few years ago. It works super good for anything I've put in it though I primarily use it for making carrot juice and juicing greens for adding to soups not drinking direct. You would not believe just how much fresh juice made from greens and carrots can add to soup but it's amazing!

u/TheBP · 3 pointsr/EatCheapAndHealthy

I bought one similar to [this] (http://www.amazon.com/Hamilton-Beach-Mouth-Extractor-67650/dp/B000FHQJ6C) and really like it. Doesn't work so great for the more soft and "juicy" fruits and veggies so I prefer to blend those, but works well for things like carrots, apples, and celery.

u/nathanmca · 3 pointsr/EatCheapAndHealthy

Look on craigslist. People tend to go through juicing phases so there are often many bargains. I got this one http://www.amazon.com/Hamilton-Beach-Mouth-Extractor-67650/dp/B000FHQJ6C for $20 and I've been quite happy with it.

u/our_guile · 3 pointsr/Juicing

I bought the Hamilton Beach Big Mouth Juice Extractor from Walmart for $50. It's plastic, but works very well and is easy to clean. Plus, extractor juicers give the best yield.

Found it on Amazon here

u/Hoogs · 3 pointsr/Juicing

Amazon has it for $323 with free shipping, which is a bit cheaper than on Omega's website.

u/knitrat · 3 pointsr/minimalism

If you like cooking:
My Omega 8006 juicer can function as a juicer, nut butter maker, spice grinder, coffee grinder, flour grinder, baby food maker, and ice cream maker. It's pricey but not if you consider the cost of all the appliances it replaces. I use it everyday.

I also hope at some point to get a multi-cooker which will replace my slow cooker, rice cooker and pressure cooker. I know some would say just use a pot but you can't beat the convenience of slow cooking/ setting rice to be ready when you get home from work, at least for myself.

Haven't gotten one yet because of the initial outlay of money, it's a delicate balance to seek multipurpose and quality but not think that magic things you buy will fix everything.

u/kokowed · 3 pointsr/Frugal

blending and juicing are different:

http://www.mindbodygreen.com/0-10183/juicing-vs-blending-infographic.html

With a ninja or magic bullet, you would be blending making smoothies not juice. If that's what you're going for these would work.

It sounds like though you want to juice since you reference juice cleanses. For that, you will need a juicer not a blender. With that said, there are 2 types of juicers: centrifugal (faster) & masticating (slower). Here is a good link that describes the differences:

http://www.forkandbeans.com/2013/07/02/guide-to-juicing/

What price range are you looking to stay in? If you have some time to shop around, you can look for some deals for a Breville juicer that has a really small model for $99.95 on Amazon:

http://www.amazon.com/Breville-BJE200XL-Fountain-700-Watt-Extractor/dp/B000MDHH06/ref=sr_1_3?ie=UTF8&qid=1382669605&sr=8-3&keywords=breville

I will say that although a lower priced juicer will save you money up front, it will end up costing you more money in the long run when it is not yielding as much juice from your produce and fruits.

I understand that it may not be feasible but we got a fairly decent deal on an Omega 8006 ($260) and the pulp is very dry and it is great with greens. I know if I shopped around a little more I could have found a better deal but wanted to get started on juicing right away so I would definitely recommend in researching what type of juicer would be the best fit for you and then looking around for the best deals. Macy's will often have 40% off juicers. Target, Best Buy, Kohl's, Bed Bath & Beyond all offer price matching and from my personal experience I have been able to price match and combine store coupons. For example if Best Buy is having a sale, I would take the ad to Kohl's and they would match the price and then I would use a 30% off Kohl's coupon so that is something you can look into too if you have some time to wait around for sales.

u/the_american_builder · 3 pointsr/Juicing

The Omega J8006 is great. Used to juice wheat grass and turmeric at a small juice bar, gave a great yield.

u/D3FSE · 3 pointsr/Juicing

Don't make juice for more than 24 hours in advance, it will go bad because it loses nutrients. Why is this?

**Once you blend or juice your produce it start to lose its nutrients pretty fast due to oxidation. Juice citrus with whatever you juicing to preserve it. Store it in a mason jar and fill it all the way to the top if your going to drink it later.*

Make sure that you have at least 2 speeds for your juicer. Some fruits will get blended to all hell and you won't get the juice you need. Is this true?

I can't really comment on a blender because I have a shitty one. I would recommend if you have to money to get a Vitamix, I heard great things about it.

Hand wash your juicer. But how often?
I hand wash it every time I juice, I don't know if I can put it in the dishwasher though. Its super easy and doesn't take that long to rinse it out and wash it in the sink. I would probably let it soak in the sink with a little bit of bleach if your using it every day probably once every three months.

A blender might be best for fruits. Is this true?

I don't really think so, your going to be getting a lot of fiber with blending though

Also, what kind of a juicer should I get? I was thinking it would be best to try a cheap one from a place like Target first. If I enjoy juicing, then I'll invest into a better one.

If your going to go cheap get this one
http://www.amazon.com/Breville-JE98XL-Fountain-850-Watt-Extractor/dp/B003R28HWQ/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1368770188&sr=8-1&keywords=breville+juicer

If you have the money get this one

or
http://www.amazon.com/Breville-800JEXL-Fountain-1000-Watt-Extractor/dp/B0002VAFVG/ref=sr_1_4?ie=UTF8&qid=1368770188&sr=8-4&keywords=breville+juicer

The Breville's are high speed blenders and will create a lot of foam, but it will juice produce really fast. It also wont get most of the juice out of leafy greens.

The Omega is a slow juicer. You're going to have to spend some time cutting your produce in smaller pieces.

I bought this masticating juicer a few years ago.
It's held up very well and it's a snap to keep clean.

u/SnootyDrinkingRoom · 2 pointsr/cocktails

I have this https://www.amazon.com/BLACK-DECKER-Citrus-Juicer-CJ625/dp/B001EU9VSM/ref=sr_1_7?s=kitchen&ie=UTF8&qid=1511926819&sr=1-7&keywords=citrus+juicer . It’s cheap and it’s great for home use. It works for everything from lime to grapefruit. I find lime juice is okay for a couple days in the fridge, and adding a bit of fresh squeezed to two day old will perk it up a bit.

u/KatelynnPwnz · 2 pointsr/Random_Acts_Of_Amazon

I ALWAYS cut myself when peeling potatoes and other foods. Peelers have just hated me my whole life for some reason :( I have one shaped like this. Makes it way harder to cut myself.

Let's do it in the kitchen.

I've been trying to eat healthy with my SO and so I have been looking into juicing, this juicer has pretty good reviews, but a little pricey.

Thanks for the contest :)

I have a 700 watt Breville. It works great in my experience. Once you get the hang of it cleanup becomes a breeze. My only issue is that it's rather loud. Oh, and it's advertised as mobile I think but it's really not--I don't think any juicers are, then again.

the Breville Ikon is super-easy to clean, and the pulp that comes out is very dry - so it's extracting quite a bit of the juice from the fruit and vegetables. It's about $200, so not a small investment, but it's one of the best reviewed out there.

[amazon link]http://www.amazon.com/Breville-BJE510XL-900-Watt-Variable-Speed-Extractor/dp/B000QBFFU8/ref=sr_1_2?s=home-garden&ie=UTF8&qid=1323217331&sr=1-2

I juice about four times a week using this: http://www.amazon.com/Omega-J8005-Single-Gear-Commercial-Masticating/dp/B0002OKDT2/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1312572902&sr=8-1

It's a masticating juicer (I know, it sounds perverted) which is better for juicing leafy greens. It's a little pricey, so I'd say start with a centrifugal juicer first to see if you like it. Like others have mentioned, it's not a substitute for actual vegetables; you should really try incorporating a salad into one of your meals every day.

I think a lot of people who hate on juicing associate it with this complete lifestyle change, probably because lot of the people that advocate it come across as a bunch of hardcore, vegan hooligans (no offense to my vegan friends). But there's no denying that juicing supplies your body tons nutrients and phytochemicals that you wouldn't otherwise get.

A typical juice recipe for me is: 5 carrots, 1 apple, half a cucumber, a couple handfuls of either spinach or kale, and a few stalks of celery. The more greens I add, the more bitter the juice is. So if you're planning on using any of those veggies, start with a little.

Hope this helps!

I bought a Black & Decker electric citrus juicer—amazon link—4 years ago and I love it. I buy two large bags of limes at a time at Sams, come home and juice the whole lot. Then I freeze the juice in 1 cup snap-lid containers. I use an OXO salad dressing shaker—amazon link—to store the juice in the fridge. I just pull out a new cup upload to thaw when the level gets down to about 1/3.

It’s cheap, too. The B&D juicer is a duplicate of the Juiceman (or the other way around…), and it’s only about $18 on Amazon.

The Chef’n manual lemon juicer is $21.

u/elukea · 2 pointsr/cocktails

The amount of labor the Sunkist J-1 has saved me has more than bought itself back. You can find refurbs for way less. I guess it just all depends on how much juice you are going through. 12-14ish liters on a weekend night here.

I have used this one in the past also.

They are both an investment but you can just knock juicing out in minutes. I'd rather have the invaluable time. Smarter not harder eh?

If I am at home I just use the classic "Mexican Elbow" and just do it. I also have an old vintage juice king manual juicer if I am doing larger or more than a few limes/lemons. No need for the whole big up and down thing at home. For a bar go commercial and electric. For home elbow grease.

I like /u/mas_o_menos have an Omega. Mine is the NC800 but they are almost identical and both amazing machines. I highly recommend it for a few reasons.

  • I use to have a Champion juicer. It was really good but didn't do green leafy as good and couldn't do wheat grass at all. I also found it hard to clean myself.
  • Omega as you can imagine is easy to clean. You literally just rinse off 5 components - 7 if you include the bowls then lightly scrub 1 with a brush that comes with the machine. Super easy and just a couple of minutes.
  • My inspiration was Fat, Sick and Nearly Dead. I suggest watching it if you haven't. Anyways that guy that did it is Joe Cross and he has the Mean Green which is the basis for most my juices.
  • My typical juice is 1 bundle of Kale, 2 bundles of celery, 2-4 cucumbers depending on size, ginger to taste, lime, 2-4 green apples. (I like to add Orange to mine because I hate veggies, red apple is another option or pineapple).
  • on a juice fast I suggest finding a good veggie broth for dinner. We added a sweet potato and I swear, it tasted just like potato soup (even though it was a sweet potato). Anyways it's nice to have a hot "dinner".

    Best of luck!

According to chocolatealchemy.com this juicer will make chocolate liquor. Keep in mind it’s unrefined.

To answer your question, I don’t think it would make it easier to remove the seeds, but you could try using a nut milk bag with this method. It could work.

resteraunt-grade juicer (like this https://www.amazon.com/Sunkist-J-1-Commercial-Citrus-Juicer/dp/B003ASMA9I) and elbow grease. I did an entire case of limes (about two liters) in like five minutes today. Precut all the limes and throw them in a pan, put on some music with a fast beat, and get a good rhythm going.

u/yoshi-mitsu · 2 pointsr/battlestations

The drink you see in the picture is from a quarter head of red lettuce, 3 celery sticks, 6 strawberry's, 2 stalks of Kale, a handful of spinach, and 2 large carrots. I've lost about 5 lbs so far from 190 to 185 so far. Its great because juicing lets your body absorb all the nutrients very easily and it detoxifies. Its also quick, I have the Omega J8006 juicer and clean up is less than 2 minutes.

I HIGHLY recommend just juicing yourself. It would have to be cost efficient.

This one is great for the price.

Good luck with your brew man! Just helped my housemate with his pumpkin ale wert today.

I've only had one juicer but I've had it for four years or so now. It's a Breville juice fountain like this: http://www.amazon.com/Breville-JE98XL-Fountain-850-Watt-Extractor/dp/B003R28HWQ but I found a refurbished version for $50 less, at $100.

Its easy to clean. I just have a stiff brush for the grinder/auger whatever. And a sponge for the rest. I use it for about 5 months out if the year.

I bought the Omega J8006 masticating juicer for $300 about six months ago after doing a bunch of research and have been very pleased with it. It's heavy duty and can handle anything I throw in it. My only complaint is the container the juice drips into is small and requires frequent emptying if you're making more than one juice.

When doing research on my options, I found Joe Cross' Reboot website to be helpful, as well as the reviews and comparisons on Amazon.

u/SpiderHippy · 2 pointsr/Juicing

I'll echo /u/fuelvolts: a blender is not what you want. I bought this juicer in 2013 and have zero regrets. It still works great, is easy to clean, and does a terrific job. You'll want to run the plup through a couple of times to extract all the juice though).

EDIT: If the price seems high: You get what you pay for. A juicer is an investment, and powerful motors cost more. It's worth the extra cost for the longevity and durability.

I use a commercial juicer for oranges and grapefruit (yup, we like juice in our home) and for mixology purposes, I use hand-juicers I purchased on amazon.

Like /u/noksagt, I prefer stainless steel options, but the ones that you see in most bars (green for lime, orange for orange and yellow for lemon) work well too, although, even though I'm not a professional bartender, the paint is already chipping off after a few months of light use.

u/ChesswiththeDevil · 1 pointr/food

I made pasta for the 1st time two nights ago. My experience was as follows:

I mixed 2 cups of all purpose unbleached flour and 2 eggs.

I kneaded it and added water for about 8 minutes until I got a ball of dough roughly the consistency of slightly dry play dough.

I covered it in saran wrap and let it sit in a drawer for 1.5 hours.

I processed it through my Omega 8006 to make the noodles.

Put in boiling water for about 2-3 minutes and then they were a perfect al dente.

EDIT: That looks delicious BTW

They tasted good but they were a little chewier than I preferred though that may be related to the type of pasta filter (for lack of a better word) I used. Any tips on making softer or less chewy pasta?

I purchased THIS juicer for $99. That was my budget and I think it's quality for the price. If you can spare more I'd go with the same brand but a model higher that can hold more pulp. For inspiration and more info I recommend the documentary Fat, Sick & Nearly Dead, which is on Netflix Instantly. I saw it due to it being recommended here on Reddit so much. I also recommend you youtube "Dave the Raw Food Trucker" who beat cancer and diabetes and extreme obesity. He recently survived a heart attack. Very inspiring.

u/caffiend2 · 1 pointr/Cooking

Well, if you have a food processor, you almost don't need a blender.
I recently got a masticating juicer and love it to death. I had considered getting a Vita-Mix because it juices and also can make soup (friction from the blades heats the contents and you got soup, son!). I decided to go with the masticating juicer (1.5 million uses) and the food processor I already had. I have a blender, but I barely use it. Some day, I will get that Vita-Mix. If you want the best blender ever with the most functions, the Vita-Mix is the way to go.

u/nutron · 1 pointr/Homebrewing

Yep, the juicer separates the pulp from the juice. I used a Breville Compact Juice Fountain last year for about 25 or so gallons of cider. This year I used Breville JE98XL for about 10 gallons. Both work equally well. I'm sure cheaper juicers work fine too.

I've found that I'm able to juice 5 gallons in one hour. The juicing disk and pulp have to be cleaned often or else efficiency goes down. Also cleaning gives the motor time to rest.

u/win32mfc · 1 pointr/Juicing

My first juicer:

Breville 800JEXLhttps://www.amazon.com/Breville-800JEXL-Fountain-1000-Watt-Extractor/dp/B0002VAFVG

But the high speed really oxidizes the juice and doesn't extract as much. Great if you want to juice 100 apples or 20 heads of celery quickly. But for quality, it leaves a lot to be desired.

My second juicer:

Omega J8006https://www.amazon.com/Omega-J8006-Dual-Stage-Masticating-Revolutions/dp/B001L7OIVI/

Worked well for me for a number of years, but didn't handle some greens very well. After following Lou Corona and making his lemon ginger blast every day, I upgraded one more time.

My *last* juicer:

Tribest GSE-5050 "Green Star Elite"https://www.amazon.com/Green-CHROME-COLORED-Masticating-Juicer-GSE-5050/dp/B075TFHVPH/

I find it makes the best juice, especially for greens (parsley, cilantro, kale, spinach, chard, etc). It's not great if you're only trying to juice, say, apples or oranges. For citrus, I used a $70 citrus press. For apples, I will use the Green Star but the apples should be pretty crisp and I may help move things along with a stalk of celery.

Yeah, it's pricey, but if you're serious about your juice and will make it a life-long habit, then it will be a good investment.

Lou Corona's Lemon Ginger Blast

  • 1 lemon
  • 1-3" ginger
  • 1-3" turmeric
  • 1/2 to 1 habanero (or omit and sprinkle in a quality cayenne powder to the final drink)
  • 1 apple (use green (granny smith) if you're fighting candida)
  • 1 cucumber
  • 1 head celery
  • 1 bunch parsley (helps clean the blood)
  • 1 bunch cilantro (helps remove heavy metals)
  • 1 bunch mint (essential oils, good for digestion)
  • WATER: cut final mixture with 1/3 water; helps the body absorb the rest

The original lemon ginger blast can be made in a blender if that's all you have:

  • 1 lemon
  • 1 to 3" ginger
  • 1 habanero (or omit and add quality cayenne powder to the final drink)
  • about 3 cups quality water

.. then blend all ingredients in a Vitamix, strain and drink.

> So everyone is complaining because this $400 machine is the same as a $20 blender

It's worse than a $20 blender, because the Juicero can only do one thing - squeeze their custom bags. And it was originally $700 - more than twice the price of a top-rated "regular" juicer that doesn't need special $5 bags of pulp to operate. Also, it will refuse to operate if your internet is down, or if the bag is even 1 day past their arbitrary expiration date. It really is the "Keurig of juicers".

Most people here have been advocating a centrifugal juicer, but in my honest opinion, getting a cold press juicer would be better in the long run. Not only do they extract more juice, but they also produce less foamy and higher quality juice as well.

Maybe something like a Omega Masticating Juicer or a Champion Juicer.

u/notpandora · 1 pointr/Juicing

I have an Omega Horizontal Masticating Juicer and as you can see, the chute is stupid narrow, so I have to cut up my apples pretty small. I cut pretty much everything except for the kale.

Since it's a masticating juicer, it's pretty slow no matter what, but I found that cutting stuff into smaller pieces (especially the apples) lets it feed more smoothly, I don't have to jam down the masher and the machine will just "eat" the produce without much assistance from me.

I also find that cutting stuff up in a certain order and then having it ready to feed helps me regulate blockage in the masticating chamber. If I do a bunch of cucumber or apples in a row, there's a build up of pulp which can even manage to build up and leak out of the detachable part and leak down the machine if I just let it stay that way. Having my stuff "layered" in the big bowl I put the chopped produce in helps me alternate, some cucumber, some apple, then some celery and kale. The celery and kale will push the pulp of the cucumber and apple out into the waste hopper. It also helps clean up, if I finish off with kale, then when I clean the main masticating piece off, it's easy to just brush off the remaining pulp and there is less dripping or accidental mess.

You can tell that the part I hate most about juicing is the mess and clean up haha.

EDIT - oh, and I found that when my fiance juices, the machine tends to get really hot on the back near the motor because he doesn't cut as fine as I do and just jams everything in and leans down on the masher. It doesn't get nearly as hot when I'm the one making the juice!

u/AZBeer90 · 1 pointr/cocktails

nah just get a small hand juicer for lemon and limes, like this electric citrus juicer. Then, use your fancy pulverizing juicer for Ginger for the best ginger syrup/moscow mules ever.

u/vi_rus · 1 pointr/Juicing

> What helps greatly in this is the juicer you are using. A masticating juicer will get more yield than a centrifugal juicer especially when it comes to leafy greens - which is what you want in your daily juices - kale, chard, spinach. You can also look them up on WolframAlpha individually to get a good look at what each is estimated to contain. You can use fillers such as celery and cucumber. But most folks base their juices from carrots, apples. I enjoy using peppers (sweet peppers, bell peppers) as they produce a nice yield, second are beets. Try and stick with more greens and less fruits.

Unfortunately the juicer that I bought (Breville BJE510XL), is in fact a centrifugal juicer, not a masticating juicer. After doing some research, I realize that this was a poor decision and will return this one and go for a masticating one. Right now I am looking at the Omega J8005, which is #3 on the TopJuicerMachine.com page recommended in this subreddits sidebar. I am also looking at the juicer that you are currently using Omega VRT330. Besides one being vertical and the other horizontal, I can't seem to find the pros and cons of each one. Reviews wise, the J8005 wins with a 4.5 Star Average (239 reviews) while the VRT330 has 4 Star Average (76 reviews). Price wise, the J8005 also wins @ $252.43 while the VRT330 is $314.99. What are your thoughts on the benefits of each and why the VRT330 is more expensive than the J8005?

I invested in an Omega J8006. I actually get a kick out of cutting everything up and watching it work. For me, it's a great machine, but it doesn't suit everyone. I don't think I'd upgrade to another machine unless I had to.

I used to have a Jack LaLanne juicer, but it kicked the bucket pretty quickly and hated greens. I don't think they're bad juicers, though. Just not for me.

WINNER - Electric

Rated as HIGHLY RECOMMENDED:

Black & Decker Citrus Juicer - $19.99

> With no effort, lemons were completely squeezed of all their juice. As you pressed gently, the reamer rotated in both directions to clean out the fruit half, and an adjustable pulp screen kept out seeds and let you adjust the pulp level of the juice with a simple switch. Great for bigger jobs when you want a lot of juice, but easy enough to use for just one lemon. Simple to assemble and clean.

WINNER - Manual
Rated as RECOMMENDED:

AMCO Houseworks Enameled Lemon Squeezer, model 06-0354 - $11.95

> Surprisingly easy to use—juice gushes out. Of the squeeze-style juice presses we tested, this was the most comfortable and effective, with curved handles and a well-shaped plunger. Squeezing the rounded handles didn’t hurt our hands like others of this style, and seeds were contained. It was also attractive, sporting a bright yellow finish, but hand-washing is best if you want to keep the paint from chipping. (We tested the paint and found it lead-free.)

  • OXO Good Grips Citrus Juicer, model 34781 - $12.99

    > Nice and easy, this juicer removed all trace of juice in each lemon half with its sharp-edged, open-sided reamer. Seeds stayed out of the juice in the collection cup, which was easy to pour. Sturdily constructed. Has many parts, including a larger reamer that’s inverted beneath the lemon reamer and hangs into the collection cup, making it harder to clean than other manual juicers.

Couple of comments on a juicer:

I own a Breville I think it is a good juicer but cleanup creates such a chore I think it discourages my use of it.

I have investigated and believe the Champion Juicer is a better all around fit as it requires very little in the way of constant maintenance and its cost is in line.

Here is the link - http://www.amazon.com/Heavy-Duty-Commercial-Juicer-Color-Black/dp/B000E4C53M/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1373289445&sr=8-1&keywords=champion+juicer

I have met the owner of they company at a ExpoWest and they seem to have a passion for the Champion product.

I also like the pulp - so in general I use my Blendtec constantly and keep the fiber - I know many would say this is not juicing and perhaps they are correct.

I had a centrifugal juicer before and just a few days ago bought a masticating one (like this but a european imitation) and that's probably the best purchase of my life... it extracts the juice of leafy vegetables really well. So I would say that's your best bet yes.

u/Rept4r7 · 1 pointr/Juicing

The L'Equip is supposedly a lot better than anything else in that price range because it uses all metal internal parts and I wish I had bought that when I got into juicing. The one I bought when I first started was the Hamilton Beach Big Mouth. That one is always in the top 2 most popular on Amazon and it is currently $59. I would wait to buy it as the price usually is more like $40 to $50. It sometimes makes chunky or foamy juice that needs to be filtered, but once you filter it (I use paper towels) it is just as good as from a premium juicer. I've had my Big Mouth for over a year and have done at least 15 gallons of juice (mainly apples) and it is still in great shape.

u/smurfsm00 · 1 pointr/adderall

Thanks, /u/lilsavito! Happy to be of service:)

I started Adderall for the first time just a few months ago - I was already eating well and the adderall wiped out my appetite but got super-thirsty so juicing is a great solution. You'll feel physically a lot better when you do it. Make sure to mix superfood-veggies/low-sugar fruit and go easy on high-sugar fruit.

Here's the juicer I have: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B003ZDNKSS/ref=oh_aui_search_detailpage?ie=UTF8&psc=1

It's very easy to use and clean (important!) and my only issue came after I dropped the lid on the floor and there was a minor crack, still works fine. Really juices well for the price.

I'm working on a simpler, at-a-glance version of my on days / off days list - will post it here soon, hope folks continue to find it helpful.

Regarding my routine: in actuality I reliably take the Emergen-C / Fish Oil Pills / Vitamin D / Melatonin pretty well. I do believe they've helped with my energy levels and sleep regulation. I DONT exercise as much as I want to - I am convinced exercise will be super helpful but I also have a bout of depression so am working on it....but I despise exercise in general, so this list helps those who also despise it - the key is to make it as easy to do as possible so you can't talk yourself out of doing it, and to honestly tell yourself "well done!" after trying it, even if you only worked out for a minute the first time, it's a huge help to pat yourself on the back and encourage yourself for any effort you're making.

My productivity has been touch and go - biggest problem for me is making sure I'm not on the computer (reddit, surfing web) when my meds kick in cause they make me hyperfocus and spend HOURS online doing nothing else. The only way it helps me get things done (cleaning, errands, projects, work, etc) is to stand up and tell myself i'm not sitting down again till I start part of my project. I did this last night with deep cleaning my apartment and once I made myself get started, I worked for like 6 hrs no problem.

Other people have mentioned L-theanine - it's supposed to be great with increasing motivation/decreasing depressive symptoms. Here's the kind I got based on a recommendation: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00TXY32FY/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o00_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

last week i found about 10 logitech 700n cameras and the power supplies that go with them. both (the camera and power supply) sell for around 50 each.

Oh, finally a Bodum french press as well. Was a pretty good day :)

Here's the one I bought and use today. You plug it in and turn the dial just until you hear the thermostat "click". TBH... this lowest setting was too low for my taste and I ended up settling for a spot slightly more "in" to the dial range.

I bought this one. Its amazing. I can put like 4 carrots at the same time or 3 small apples one on top of the other. Cleaning isn't too hard.

Jucing is amazing if you don't mind the hunger you sometimes get ohh and having to constantly go to the restroom. When I juice I illiterately lose a pound a day. Even if I have a non american size meal in the evning..

As far as affordable ones that work well, this is what I have: http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B000FHQJ6C/

Pros: Strong motor (1hp!), easy to clean, wide mouth feeding tube, cheap!

Cons: centrifugal design isn't as efficient as masticating juicers

I have this one and I love it: Breville BJE200XL Compact Juice Fountain 700-Watt Juice Extractor. I chose it because at the time it had the most reviews on Amazon.

Yeah, that's why I often make it myself with the Champion juicer...comes out amazing! They're pricey (usually around $300), but they're one of those few /r/BuyItForLife appliances that will literally last for decades (unfortunately, I have no faith that my 6qt KitchenAid Pro stand mixer will last beyond even a decade, it is NOT built like they used to build them!). This is the model I have:

As an odd but welcome bonus, if you run frozen bananas through it, it creates banana soft-serve ice cream! I'm not talking about that fake vegan-style ice cream that you make from frozen bananas in a blender or food processor, I'm talking about legit soft-serve: (it's actually called banana "whip")

Frozen bananas go in, soft-serve comes out, you can't explain that! ;)
