Instead of gloves, pick up a pair of pogies. I've paddled for 20 years now, and when i was racing marathons in cold, rainy weather (sub 5'C), these were a lifesaver.
I have these for biking in extreme weather, your hands get a bit sweaty and you will have to wash them pretty frequently to keep them from getting too smelly. but worth it if you are outside for extended periods of time. I was on a film shoot in -11 degrees last month, and these gloves kept me pretty warm throughout the day.
Gloves are key. I used to get those a lot, but not after buying a decent pair of gloves.
I have a pair of these that I use when the weather is warmer.
