Here's a pretty good setup if you're willing to get whole beans and grind them yourself:

French Press ($12), Hario Skerton hand grinder ($40) - if you have a pot to boil water in this is all the setup you'd need for great coffee at only $52.

If you don't have a pot, add on an electric kettle for $20 and you're still only at $72 total.

buy something like this, easier to clean because of cylindrical shape.

I've been coveting this but if it's the form that's bothering you then it's not going to help...

I'll play!

/u/sugarfish7 - I saw this and if it's for your pup, you have my sympathy! We had to buy one last year for our Saint mix, and man, it helped! What kind of pup do you have?

I also saw this...and didn't even know it was a thing. Now I do!

/u/AlligatorPie - you have an [electric kettle](https://smile.amazon.com/Ovente-KG83M-Cordless-Electric-Kettle/dp/B00KY4CTY2?ie=UTF8&colid=21GNU93J702YL&coliid=IZ19PUBYF15OE&psc=1&ref=wl_it_dp_v_nS_ttl) on your wishlist! I love it! Are you a tea person? If so, what's your favorite? (If you're not a tea person, what's the kettle for?)

I use this electric one and it works great

u/MsMargo · 2 pointsr/whatisthisthing

Indeed! Here's a fancy modern one in the same style: http://www.amazon.com/Electric-Maker-Machine-Copper-Samovar/dp/B00R55RPWE

It's not fancy, but I have this model: https://www.amazon.com/Hamilton-Beach-40989e-Stainless-Electric/dp/B00MU51JLW/

If you know someone with a Costco membership, I believe they carry it for cheaper, around $20 or so. We use ours at least twice a day and it's held up well over the years.

I hate stove-top kettles! The horrible whistling combined with the fear of burning myself (I have a gas stove) makes what should be a soothing cup of tea or hot chocolate somewhat stressful.

Here is an electric kettle costing $19.99 that I added to my list today.

Thank you for spreading kettle cheer! :)

I have had this one for 3 years, and it works well.

This one is for use in the US, but it's a good unit, you may be able to find one for use in the UK.

That's just a basic hard cider. But even if you want to brew beer, you could start with one of These or These

I really like the brown rice millet ramen noodles. they cook in boiling water in about 3 minutes. They’re great w homemade peanut sauce and green beans. Or I dump some room temperature tomato sauce + Parmesan cheese on top and let the noodles kinda heat it up.

I also like instant miso soup powder from Trader Joe’s and instant mashed potatoes. Or if you can actually boil something (maybe use a hot pot?) I make a hard boiled egg and cook Chinese broccoli in the water while it’s cooking. I season the cooked food with some soy sauce and maybe a little mustard.

I would like to add my two cents:

  1. Mix milk and flour first. Then add the eggs. This way the dough does not get lumpy/cloggy.
  2. If you have the time, let the dough sit for a few minutes. (The dough gets smoother this way.)
  3. Get yourself a good pan. Maybe if you are really into it a crepes machine

College student here, this is my cheap yet effective setup that I just got for Christmas

Aeropress $22

Hario Slim grinder $23

[Basic electric kettle] (http://www.amazon.com/dp/B00DEQDF7C/ref=twister_B00DEQDEXW?_encoding=UTF8&psc=1) $15

American Weigh scale $9

Basic thermometer $9

Grand total: $78, still less than a Keurig!

Happy Mug sells beans for $14/pound shipped. At 17g of beans a cup, you can make almost 27 cups of coffee with a pound of beans. This comes to about 52 cents for a cup of coffee, which is comparable to cheaper K cups.

Also, as a former dark roast addict I suggest you start a little more towards a medium roast. I got a lighter roast with my first bag of beans after walking into a local roaster and grabbing what was available. The sweetness took a little while to get used to (I didn't know coffee could actually be so sweet!) but it really accentuates the differences between great coffee and "common" coffee.

This kettle has done me no wrong ( Ovente 1.7 Liter BPA Free Cordless Electric Kettle, Green (KP72G) https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00DEQDEUK/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_jxDGzbJSECXBX ) It holds a lot of water, the heating element isn't exposed, and it shuts off automatically when the water is hot.

For air fresheners, one of these Odor Eliminators ( Hamilton Beach True Air Plug-Mount Odor Eliminator https://www.amazon.com/dp/B003PWSQMY/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_wuDGzbPMGNJ33 ) has actually been quite effective when placed behind my desk. It at least makes my work area less smelly! You CAN add a scent cartridge to it but you don't have to.

I have their stainless steel version - I was worried about possibly cracking the glass if adding cold water to it when it was hot. Dunno about the glass version, but I feel like mine takes longer to heat up than it "should." Takes a bit under ten minutes when full.

That said, I've had it for about eight months and it's in perfect working order still, so it has durability going for it.
