Okay, I can talk scissors.

These look great for certain purposes, but to me they look like they'd be a nightmare in the kitchen -- hard and time consuming to dry, non-dishwasher friendly. For the kitchen I prefer come apart shears, which you can take completely apart to wash and dry.

For cutting paper, regular Fiskars will never fail you.

If you want to cut fabric, you need a dedicated pair of fabric shears. If you like to do anything fabric-oriented, it's worth having a separate pair because dull scissors will shred, rather than cutting. You can go with Ginghers if you feel like going actual BIFL, but I've used Fiskars for 10 years without a hint of wear on them.

For opening boxes, a simple or classic utility knife/box-cutter will do the job and keep your scissor blades from getting crap on them.

And for heavier-duty cutting (like zip-ties), get a pair of compound snips so you don't mess up the blades of your regular scissors.

Edit: it's hilarious to me that this comment has gotten so much attention. There's a lot of good info and alternate suggestions below. The compound snips especially seem to be overqualified for my uses, although as a person whose hands get tender and finicky, especially in the colder months, it's definitely nice to have something that takes the effort out of cutting those damn zip ties.

u/Imapseudonorm · 21 pointsr/BuyItForLife

I've never used these, but I did a bit of digging and they seem to have fairly favorable reviews. https://www.amazon.com/Kuhn-Rikon-Classic-Snips-8-Inch/dp/B00D096UK2

u/agoia · 16 pointsr/drunkencookery

That looks awesome as hell. If you use scissors a lot on chicken and raw meat and stuff I HIGHLY recommend getting a pair that can separate like these or these so you can clean them fully. The fixed rivet ones have a higher chance of harboring shit where it cant get well cleaned and potentially cross contaminating stuff.

u/BthreePO · 14 pointsr/GifRecipes

It's literally just that. Cut up through the ribs on both sides of the spine. Double bonus is now you get to use the spine to make stock. I made mine in the pressure cooker and it was amazing.

I used my regular chicken scissors this year, but they really didn't like cutting through the ribs. For a big bird, you'll want poultry shears like these or these

u/SimAlienAntFarm · 11 pointsr/CrappyDesign

Herb snippers. They cut bunches of herbs into tiny pieces all in one go.

Brackets still useless tho.

Kitchen stuff along with the effort put in to learn can pay dividends. You'll probably end up saving money, impressing dates, and just enjoying life more.

Example of things in this category:

  • Cast Iron Pan (~20$)
  • 1-qt Pot (~10$), I've actually found my Ikea one to be extremely well made. General rule is that you should feel comfortable fighting zombies with it.
  • Chef's Knife (~40$)
  • Sheers (~20$)
  • Cookie Sheet (~10$), I find a secret to eating healthy and cheaply is to just roast a bunch of vegetables.
  • Rice Cooker (I'm Chinese and biased on this one)

The above makes up the core of my BIFL kitchen stuff. I have other stuff, like cutting boards, sous vide, grater, blow torch, etc. But those things are not necessary and don't last for life.
u/SunBakedMike · 5 pointsr/GoodValue

If you really want to get a block set then try the Victorinox 7 piece set. But honestly building your own is better.

  • Get a universal block like this or this. Avoid wooden blocks, they may look nice but sooner or later unseen crud is going to build up. The Polymer blocks can be taken apart and the insides cleaned out.

  • Victorinox 8 in Chef's Knife best bang for your buck ~$35

  • Mercer Bread 10 in Bread Knife ~$17

  • Victorinox Paring Knife ~ $9. Wusthof is supposed to be better but I'm not spending $40 for a paring knife.

  • Kitchen shears depends on what you are going to do. Light duty shears get a Victorinox Classic ~$14. You'll be able to do all kitchen tasks and occasionally break down a chicken. If you plan to break down chickens more than occasionally then get a Shun Kitchen Shears ~$70. If you plan to break down chickens often then get dedicated heavy duty chicken shears (can't help you with that) and a Victorinox for the light stuff.

  • Get a sharpener. If you're willing to learn how to sharpen get a Spyderco Sharpmaker and a cut resistant glove, if not get a Chef's Choice 4643. The Chef's Choice is a poor 2nd choice I urge you to get a Spyderco, but DO NOT forget the cut resistant glove. Most people after they get good at sharpening become less paranoid about cutting themselves and that's when they cut themselves.

  • Get a honing steel any will do but I like the Wustof 9 in it's magnetic so it'll pick up any metal dust even though I always wipe my knife on a damp towel. Honing and sharpening do two different things. You should hone often, sharpen rarely.

Here is something from r/ATKgear if you want another opinion.

America's Test Kitchen recommended these:

I'm partial to these, personally.

u/unclearcheese · 4 pointsr/antiMLM

Olfa is pretty good for regular shears. Don't come apart tho.

Or you can get something like this: https://www.amazon.com/All-Clad-C3220908-Stainless-Kitchen-Shears/dp/B00MCJ35LI/ref=sr_1_7?s=home-garden&ie=UTF8&qid=1523698470&sr=1-7&keywords=shears+stainless

The cutco ones are $140. You can try out a bunch of different shears for that money.

u/2scoops · 3 pointsr/AskReddit

I don't know about coolest, but these would prove useful....

u/Cyno01 · 3 pointsr/AskCulinary

Mercer and wusthov are both fine knives, but if you want the most bang for your buck, you really should buy individually. That doesnt mean you cant get a nice matching set though. Copying and pasting this from a thread a few weeks ago.

They wont come all together in a nice box, but no reason you couldnt get a nice block too and just wrap the whole thing...

u/bad-monkey · 3 pointsr/BuyItForLife

I'm using Wusthofs.

https://www.amazon.com/Wusthof-WU5558-1-Come-Apart-Kitchen-Shears/dp/B0000631ZM

They're convenient to pull apart during cleaning, cutting action is meh (perhaps I need to sharpen them), but for the most part these shears are going strong after 7 years of tough daily use.

u/SandraRosner · 3 pointsr/jewelrymaking

I do sterling silver wire wrapping in a few of my pieces & use these scissors to cut the wire: https://www.amazon.com/Joyce-Chen-51-0220-Unlimited-Scissor/dp/B0000CFLH7

These will work well on 22ga & 24ga silver, gold & plated, and though I have 3 pairs (for use in different areas of my studio), they all still work really well after 10 years of use. If you purchased a long chain of pre-made, just use these scissors to cut through a link and add your jump.

(Example of my wire wrapping so you can see how awesome these scissors are at making clean cuts: https://www.etsy.com/listing/578151951/amethyst-sterling-silver-scroll-earrings )

I've had these [OXO Kitchen Shears] (https://www.amazon.com/OXO-Multi-Purpose-Kitchen-Scissors-Shears/dp/B000KILLXM) for years and they do the job well and the price is right. I can't imagine spending $100 on something like this.

u/Rks1157 · 2 pointsr/Cooking

They are for opening bottles and jars. Better sets have metal inserts in them.

http://www.amazon.com/Wusthof-5558-1-Come-Apart-Kitchen-Shears/dp/B0000631ZM

u/ElleAnn42 · 2 pointsr/Cooking

That's why you buy kitchen shears that come apart.

u/TheyreFine · 2 pointsr/AskCulinary

Hard to say exactly how that goes together, but it looks like it may be missing a part. I've had this pair for a couple of years now, and it really does the trick nicely with a minimum number of parts.

u/Grim-Sleeper · 2 pointsr/sewing

Reading the reviews on Amazon, I get the impression that Ginghers are overrated and not actually as good as they are made out to be. Instead, I ended up buying these Kai Scissors. They are amazing. Super smooth. Very easy on the hands. And insanely shard. Don't wiggle your scissors while adjusting your hand position. It'll start cutting the fabric even before you start closing the blades.

They are admittedly super pricey. And it took me a while to think whether I could justify that price. But in the end, they are a very professional tool that makes cutting fabric so much easier. I do baby them a lot though. Nothing other than fabric ever gets cut with these shears.

Thick sauces:

We'll go ahead & get the Absolute Best Guacamole recipe out of the way here:

https://www.reddit.com/r/SalsaSnobs/comments/a3kjdy/the_only_guacamole_recipe_youll_ever_need/

Also, please come join us on /r/SalsaSnobs!

Salsa of all kinds are available. Canned is an easy way to go, although homemade is always awesome. It can be a thin, running sauce, it can be mixed in with the shredded meet or marinated onto strips or chunks of meat, or it can be a chunky salsa with some soft stuff like tomatoes & peppers to bite into. Salsa verde is awesome:

https://cookieandkate.com/homemade-salsa-verde-recipe/

Instant Pot refried beans:

https://www.wellplated.com/instant-pot-refried-beans/

5-minute blender red taco sauce:

https://livingwellmom.com/homemade-taco-sauce-less-5-minutes/

The list of sauces available is pretty huge, so start with that & then go from there!

Veg out:

Fresh or canned veggies are good here. I love onions (white, yellow, purple, etc.) sliced up fresh, as well as avocado. Canned beans are great & add some extra texture (I like black beans). For corn kernels, there's a specific product I like, which is canned extra-sweet corn niblets. They vacuum-pack & steam-cook them right in the can, so you can simply open them up & use them immediately, no cooking & shucking from fresh cobs required & no defrosting required from frozen bags!

https://www.greengiant.com/products/detail/green-giant-extra-sweet-corn-niblets-11-oz-can/

Shredded lettuce is great with shredded chicken. You can actually DIY easily with herb scissors, which are useful for lettuce, other greens, and various herbs like parsley & cilantro:

https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00LRKMK96/

Quick pickled onions are fantastic & only take about 5 minutes to make:

https://www.rachelcooks.com/2017/06/12/how-to-pickle-red-onions-in-five-minutes/

Putting it all together:

So here's the magic 3-step process to making a great homemade taco:

  1. Warm shell
  2. Delicious meat
  3. Great toppings

You can go nuts & nixtamalize your own corn tortillas, sous-vide your steak, quick-pickle your onions, cook your refried beans in an Instant Pot, and blend up your own salsa. Or you can buy some pre-made tortillas off the shelf, grab some canned chicken, shred it up with some bottled lime juice & canned salsa, throw a few fresh ingredients on top, and voila - better than Taco Bell! Tacos are kind of the ultimate choose-your-own-adventure food!

And so that concludes Taco Master Class, Level 1. This is just the tip of the iceberg. I've had tacos that would blow. your. mind. Taco Bell is fine, and there's something to be said for a 99-cent taco when you're hungry (and they're pretty decent!), but learning how to make your own tacos at home is like having a secret superpower, haha!
u/Analysisreport · 2 pointsr/knives

Higonokami, morakniv, opinel no8 carbon, and a cryo II and then you'll have about $100 to spend on something else. Maybe a pair of shun kitchen shears. http://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B001DINYHE/ref=mp_s_a_1_1?qid=1425412801&sr=8-1&keywords=shun+kitchen+shears&pi=AC_SY200_QL40&dpPl=1&dpID=31D%2BpTNjtaL&ref=plSrch
Leaving ~$40 for shipping and something nice for the so.

u/boxsterguy · 2 pointsr/smoking

Get a pair of quality poultry shears. The bigger the shears, the less grip strength you need to make them work. And you want ones that come apart easily for cleaning.

Alternatively, get a big ass cleaver.

I have a couple of devices to suggest that might help you out a little bit. And then some Recipes..

[Salad Cutter bowl]

These could be used I think for chopping some smaller items too not just herbs

[Herb Scissors]

[Onion Chopper]

Some of the items in this dish can be purchased ready to go like the onions and bell peppers. I also buy diced pickled jalapeños to use in dishes cause I can't touch them.

In this recipe they want you to cook the chicken from raw and then shred it. that could pose quite a challenge. I used rotisserie chicken already chopped that worked better for me.

[Homemade Crock Pot Chicken Tortilla Soup]

[Black Bean Garnachas]

For this one I would buy the carrots already sliced.

[Campbell's Creamy Chicken and Wild Rice]

One of those chopper devices would help here unless you buy the frozen chopped onions.

[Cauliflower Breakfast Muffins]

[Cheesey Flounder Florentine]

[Chicken Alfredo Casserole]

Maybe?

[Dreamy Vegan Tomato Soup]

[Easy Sesame Noodles]

Again Maybe?

That's where I'm leaning so far. Unless my parents have extra knives sitting in the basement that they want to get rid of, I'll probably end up getting this, this, this, this, this, and a couple of these.

These are the scissors OP has in the photo. I suggest take apart scissors since they are easier to clean. This pair also has a serrated center that busts nuts.

However all of those appear to be great quality and the reviews seem good.

I used these poultry shears, which I decided upon after reading this article.

The shears have worked great for two turkeys so far this year (a test turkey last week, and the Thanksgiving turkey, which has been dry-brining since Tuesday.)

I can see using these many years into the future. The fact that they come apart for individual cleaning of each side is a bonus (though it was a pain in the ass when I opened them too wide while cutting.)

u/dittochu · 1 pointr/jewelers

meat shears! it sounds weird, but they're good for snipping small gauge wire without getting those sheared ends.

or if you are lazy, get a good pair of kitchen shears and cut the bone out. You lose a little more meat than you do w/ a filet knife but I find it quicker and easier. I like these kitchen shears b/c the two blades separate for easy cleaning. They are one of my "go to" kitchen tools.

I've got a pair of mundial and they don't suck. I use them primarily for spatchcocking chickens, so I cut bone with them all the time and then split them and throw them in the dishwasher. They are great for $20

u/FurnitureCyborg · 1 pointr/Cooking

I've had these for a few years now, they are great. Whatever brand you get, the important part is that the blades separate for cleaning and drying. That way they don't rust, crud doesn't get stuck in the blades and dull them and they are super easy to clean. Love my shears.

u/Affirmcation · 1 pointr/Random_Acts_Of_Amazon

Toaster oven: I always suggest Cuisinart. They make a good small kitchen appliance. Reliable, and while more expensive than others, it's worth it.

Microwave: You may never have time to cook an actual meal.

Cooking utensils: Calphalon Nylon. Good value.

Crockpot: Showing up on a lot of suggestions. A mini will serve you well unless you're feeding large quantities of people.

Dish rack, a sturdy (large) trash can, laundry bags and smart storage, and kitchen shears.

u/Winterixes · 1 pointr/BuyItForLife

Mundial take apart kitchen shears. They split apart at the fulcrum, which makes them super easy to clean in the dishwasher. If you like to cut down on single function kitchen gadgets they also double as a bottle opener and a nutcracker. I’ve had mine for 10 years. Also recommend the mundial brand if you ever need fabric shears.

When I worked in a garden shop, we used Joyce Chen scissors to prune small plants. Made in Japan, lifetime warranty, dishwasher safe, and available in many supermarkets.

They cut very easily and cleanly. I enjoyed using them so much that I bought myself a couple pairs (after my boyfriend stole my first pair). The only thing I don't like is that they lack the spring action that pruners have, which makes them a bit tiring after repeated use; but for fine control, it's better to not have a spring, in my opinion.

u/ripsfo · 0 pointsr/whatisthisthing

on this one, since it has an obvious bottle opener, the area with teeth is called out specifically for nutcracking and screw cap opening. TIL
