Don't buy a kit! They sell you all kinds of shit you won't use when there are better options for similar money.

Get a brewing bucket as if you don't have a bottler then this will make your life so much better.

Get 2 carboys (glass is best but better bottles will work too). Check Craigslist for these...you can get some awesome deals.

Get 1 Refractomoeter instead of a hydrometer because they use WAY less of your must to calculate and they aren't mega fragile like hydrometers are.

You will want an auto siphon

You will want a carboy brush that fits on a cordless drill because cleaning a carboy without one fucking sucks (and for 18 bucks this is a no brainer).

You will need sanitizer. I personally like Iodophor because it's super cheap, it doesn't really foam up and it lasts forever. I bought one of THESE bottles like 2 years ago and it is about half full even though I brew between 50-100 gallons a year.

I always advocate people start with beer bottles rather than wine bottles. The reason for this has less to do with the bottles and more to do with equipment. The Ferrari Bottle Capper is 14 dollars while a good floor corker for wine bottles will set you back 60 bucks. In addition, it's cheaper to bottle in 20 ounce beer bottles with caps rather than in wine bottles with good corks. Use of a double lever corker for wine bottles should be considered a war crime...seriously...unless you're a masochist who loves dumping wine everywhere and having to clean it afterwards...then just avoid them...they are absolutely awful.

If you go the wine bottle route then NEVER use agglomerated or colmated corks (the ones made from tiny pieces of cork glued together) as they fall apart and will leave chunks in your bottles. In addition they don't age well, so you are much more likely to lose your brew to spoilage. I like synthetic Nomacorc but you can also buy very good quality solid natural corks as well.

Good oxygen absorbing bottle caps on the other hand are mega cheap. Again...this isn't about one being better than the other, so you can use either one.

For wine bottles, I REALLY like the ones with screw tops because they make it nice and easy to cap your bottles once opened. But for all of your bottles buy these locally...shipping will double or triple the cost of these vs buying locally. I get them for 15 bucks a case a few miles from my house...they're almost 30 a case on Amazon or close to that from Midwest or from Ohio (shipping is like 11-15 dollars a case.)

For beer bottles...I prefer clear, but they'll be tough to find locally so I often end up with brown ones. Again...buy these locally not online due to shipping costs. Your local brewing supply stores buy these pallets at a time so even Amazon can't compete with the lack of shipping costs.

Hey! It’s good! Thank you for asking! Moving on Saturday went well. Paying for movers was such a good choice. I’m unpacked, including the kitchen, living room, and dining room. Boyfriend is still working on unpacking his stuff.

The biggest downside is lack of internet!! Comcast is here now (guy came yesterday but couldn’t find anything, so this is Tech 2) checking it out. And Comcast is our only option out here.

I bought a different wine rack. In my quilting/craft room, there’s a normal closet and then a 2nd closet that opens into a half height storage room. I decided to get a long wine rack and keep my wine in there. Pic. this way, I can hide the good wine when people who don’t appreciate wine come over :) once it’s all set up, I’ll post a picture.

Update: We have internet!! Wooo!!!! All is right in the world!!

This guy is what we have. It works like a charm and doesn't take much muscle to operate.

Where to buy?

Edit: NVM, answered my own question:

u/RazeSpear · 3 pointsr/GiftIdeas

A little cheesy, but a King Tut Mug.

Also along the lines of beverages, an Anubis Wine Stand.

Those fall quite a bit under your budget though, so if you want to buy something a bit more pricey, you could always buy them a khopesh.

I have the perfect picture and it so happens to be on my wish list!! This is the silliest giraffe themed item I've ever seen! You need to have one of these.

Since the most wonderfull /u/Lauran2323 has summoned me, I'll list what I have in my place that I find super useful.

I have this in the kitchen, it holds the microwave and our champange and wine

I think it's a very cool tissue holder

You want this always readily available to you or a guest

Holds even more wine and double as a buffet in your dining room

Fans are huge if you want to save money by using an A/C less

Just to keep things organized on the fridge

It drives me nuts when people open letters like a christmas present

Also some sort of nice smelling candle - it'll make the place feel more like home.

As far as saving money - the urge to order out is immense. Try and cook as often as possible, it's cheaper and healthier. Except on Fridays. On Fridays you can eat pizza!!!!!!!

Dining room area https://imgur.com/gallery/Y92Zl

So, I've got a rather ugly, non utilised dining space really, the tables shit, chairs have fallen apart and the room feels like a waste of space currently. It joins onto my kitchen which I'm rather proud to have and has a double a doorway entrance. I'm thinking of building a high top counter out of wood, running from the main centre wall (chimney area) running to about halfway through the room. I don't really want any heavy marble or work surfaces as I really don't trust the beams beneath as there's a basement area that has already had to have the joists lifted as they had started to drop.

I'm waiting for the basement to be tanked so it can be habitable and I can build my bar down there. In the mean time this space needs to be like a dining/bar area. I'm planning on having the wall to the right as an optics rack and wine holder wall.

These: https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B01L3C670U/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_YaLBzbSCRRRQR
https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B000BKHL1K/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_ubLBzb4HHVZ94

I'm then aiming to build a counter top to go down the centre of the room and mount a TV on the wall and maybe if money and space permits build a 2 pump beer dispenser into the counter top at the end closest to the wall.

Hopefully based on the description you can get an idea of what I'm on about. The floor is pretty uneven which is a challenge already.

The wall width is about 126cm and it will extend out into the room by about 220cm.

I need the surface to have a ledge so that people can sit under it like a bar and have it be used as a dining table too.

So, question is, how would you approach this and what material would you use. I'm new to the DIY stuff and house works so any help, advice or general do and donts would be amazing at this point. I'm going to draw up a CAD to get things started once I have all dimensions

Oh that is so exciting! Did you move from your city/state, or did you just buy a house in the area you already lived? I'm currently renting, but hope to buy a house once I've moved to another state. Home decorating is so much fun. It's like playing the Sims. I'm totally down for this, so excuse me if I link several things:

Wall Art:

If you're a fan of horror, there is this beautiful frankenstein and his wife wall art

Not sure what room you might hang this in but, beautiful regardless

I saw you said that you like cows, and thought this would be a fun piece to hang

Lighting:

This REALLY cool vintage metal pendant light

This cieling spider lamp fixture (not really a spider) would look amazing in your bedroom or livingroom

But of course, we can't forget some proper lighting for the kitchen, with this hanging glass ball edison pendant

A Few Misc, But Fun Selections:

the paper towel holder you didn't know you needed

a wine holder, because cows

to commemorate your new home

everyone needs coasters

Last but not least, some fun shower curtains:

fear and slothing in las vegas

it's so wrong it's right

bc who wouldn't want a cat riding a narwhal

shark it to me

Have fun filling your new home! May you make many new memories, good luck!
